    Hello!
Just a quick message to clarify a point that keeps coming up! :)
I guess when I recorded this reaction I wasn't really thinking about people that were actually into metal as my audience (bit stupid of me really haha!) so my comment of the growl/scream not being "as loud as you'd think it is" is kind of aimed at people who've never heard metal. To a new listener, it sounds insane, like a lions roar or something, so I was trying to explain it in a way that made more sense to a casual watcher. I'm aware that some metal screams are very loud, and some not loud at all (and that can differ from singer to singer, i've been told tatianna has a pretty loud scream live, which i'm keen to hear!)
I'd also like to say how enjoyable it's been reading (most of) your comments on this video! You're all hugely knowlegable and keen to give me insights here and there, it's made me really want to dive deeper into the genre and broaden my horizons a little bit. I used to listen to some metal in my teens, but fell off the wagon :(
Anyway, thanks again for watching, and look forward to carrying on the conversation!

While the bulk of your audience may not be metalheads, typically when we see reactions to metal bands, especially this one and this song in particular, we come en masse because we all know that NO ONE expects THAT sound to come from THAT body if they're not familiar with Jinjer. We come for the reaction and to answer any questions the Reactor may (will) have about whether it's actually her or not. Mostly we come for the faces made when she breaks it out first time. 😁😁 I don't miss the chance to see anyone react to this, especially vocal coaches.

Tatiana smokes, drinks, doesn’t warm up, never got trained. It’s all a natural talent to achieve the greatest vocal fry on the planet. Her Glottal folds are vibrating beyond belief. She has the voice of a thousand warriors and equally mind blowing live.
There is compression, delay, reverb, dual layer or time shift and a whisper track occasionally too.
    Possibly micro shift as well.
All minor effects.. the majority is all her.

In an interview afterwards, they said they went back in and did some overdubs. I noticed some doubling much later on the word "underworld", and was hoping that they had just split her signal and processed the parts differently with EQ and delays live. So I guess they should have called it "Studio Session" instead. It's pretty good how the lyrics, which concern the dual nature of the Pisces sign, and her wanting love but also being reluctant due to past hurts, is reflected by the 2 voices.

It’s called false chord screaming and it utilizes the vestibular fold rather than the vocal chords. It actually has a pretty good volume to it and doesn’t totally rely on amplification from the mic. She’s a master at it with amazing control. She also sometimes uses fry screams for the higher screams, which does use the vocal chords, but at a healthy lower volume balancing chord compression with a controlled release of less air.

Tee Totally agree! I called it constriction, which is the term I use for what you describe in your comment (which is incredibly well written btw!) I’ve referenced what I mean by that in previous videos, but probably should have reiterated in this video for clarity. I also agree it’ll have a decent volume, just that it won’t be *AS* loud as it may be perceived by some. It's good, that you had the balls to mention the postproduction. In other Reaction videos there was just 'No, that's not her' OR 'Yes, that's absolutely her' (in the comments too). I think, she as a performer and her Voice as her Instrument are extraordinary and for me it's O.K. to underline the greatness oft all this in the postproduction.

Really good ear! I could hear the post production that layered some of the vocals, but not that early in the song. Tatjana is quite extraordinary though - she's literally the first singer that does those screams that didn't turn me off the song. So this song, when I first heard it, blew my mind twice over; first, that such a sound could come out of such a small female body, and second, that I.... actually kinda liked it.
For an example of how she sounds without such post production, I highly recommend reacting to the live version of Jinjer - Teacher, Teacher.

It certainly is not on such a low volume as you say/think it is. That's only the case when people don't actually have their technique right. If you know how to make that sound and then project it, the way you would project when belting, it's pretty loud.
There's certainly some sort done. They should t really have called it 'live', but hey, it's still great, right?
Check out some live stuff. You'll see that it's all her.

Ahh...nothin' like a fresh reaction to Pisces on a Saturday night!
The 3:30...or so, nervous chuckle was the best. As you went farther into it it was obvious you were liking it.
I love some of the newer female screamers especially (I've been a Metalhead since the early eighties). You might want to try the Agonist Panophobia. Alissa White-Gluz does an amazing job, though she's now with Arch Enemy. In Arch Enemy she's doesn't do the clean vocals, almost at all, so it doesn't have that sharp contrast between the two, but yes there are a lot of Amazing vocalists that work in this style.
I appreciate your comments. You have a lot to offer. Thanks.
...oh Mary Z with Voice Hacks does a great job explaining this vocal technique. 🤘

It's no secret that there are vocal tracks layered in some parts, it's all explained in the description of the original video. They did it to make this new version of the song sound as close as possible to the original album version. However, those 2nd voices you heard were not created by any digital effect, they were all sang by Tatiana in the studio.
I hope this helped clearing some of your "doubts". : )
    Anyway, like 42.

Finally someone talked about the overdub or layer (between 9:48 - 9:52 you can hear it pretty clear - one of the growls is slightly higher than the other one)... yes, there is...but it is pretty common in studio, one vocal track is lower making a "natural chorus effect" to the man track...
BUT alive she sings very well and she has a really strong and powerful voice! She's growls is low, imo she has the lowest and strongest growls of frontwoman's, that i know, around.I saw than live and yes, she is amazing alive. She is the Chuck Billy of womans!!!

Found your channel through this video. Love watching reactions to this song hehe.
If you are intending to delve into metal you may wish to explore other vocal styles than just the harsh vocals that are prevalent in the newer subgenres of metal. I am talking oldschool.. more operatic metal vocalists. There are some top notch singers in Metal.
My recommendations include the vocalists Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, and of course Ozzy Osbourne. There are many others.. but these four are pretty much the template for metal singers from the 70's into the 90's for sure.
For Ronnie James Dio, I'd recommend the song "Stargazer" by the band "Rainbow" for a starter. Ronnie James Dio was in several bands over the years.. most notably Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and 'Heaven and Hell' which was basically the old Black Sabbath lineup under a different name.
For Rob Halford, I would recommend the band "Judas Priest" with the song "Victim of Changes" for a more robust sampling of his vocals.. or if you want more extreme.. the song "Painkiller"
For Bruce Dickinson there are so many.. but most people check out "Hallowed Be Thy Name" by the band "Iron Maiden" for starters. It is nearly impossible to find a band song by Iron Maiden.
For Ozzy Osbourne.. there are a few choices.. if you want a duet, he did a song with Lita Ford called "If I close My Eyes Forever" which is like a love ballad. If you are looking for a more rock/metal 80's sound check out his song "Crazy Train".. or a more 70's sound, check out the song "War Pigs" by the band Black Sabbath, which he helped found in like '69 or thereabouts.. prior to Dio replacing him in the mid/late 70's.
I could go on but these are good starting points. :)
    Peace

Spot on man! Good reaction too. It's something I was playing with in my early years... I'm talking about the doubling of the vocals. One growl low and guttural and one higher, more like a shriek, overlayed on the low one. That's what's happening at 9:50, for example. I don't know about the mic, it's probably what you said because on the lives, it seems less powerful. But there's something I saw to some other bands too, over the years, like... for example Dani from Cradle of Filth (or miss Gossow when she played for Arch Enemy, though she realized that issue very quickly... like, from the second album on). If you go full on every time you have to perform, you will hurt you vocal chords at some point, so you need to take care of your voice. But it ain't like a "whisper" either. Nevertheless, she is a very good, talented and charismatic front female for a band, which is good enough for me.
L.E.: You know, on all the reactions I've watched to this song, you're the only one, at this point in time, that said anything about the doubling of the voice.

  • @cdawg7138
    @cdawg7138 4 роки тому +5

Tatiana shared in an interview that the only effects used for her vocals are reverb and a "slight" delay. That might be why they sound dubbed.
Also, in that very same interview, she said that "extreme" vocals (i.e. growling and screaming) requires a lot of training, which she said she has been doing for many, many years. Therefore, she advised others to not do it without the proper training.
Furthermore, she is a Pisces (March 15). As I am also a Pisces, I understand her message. Pisces is very dichotomous sign. "One being brings life. The other runs for death". Therefore, the message should also be conveyed dichotomously.
    Good analysis!

She certainly can do it because I can do it easily too. I found that voice in me by accident, had fun with it, so with time it improved a lot. It's great to scare people and it doesn't hurt to switch. Just different muscles. You can even use both at the same time as we can hear in this song.

You sir are correct about the double up on the voice. Even in her live concerts there is a back track she does herself that goes with the song. I know I will get some haters because they think it is all her but those of us that really know how music is produced hear this. Before someone says anything please go listen to the song closely many bands do this. The volume does not need to be loud to produce that sound either. It is a technic that is learned just like any other like classical or opera. She is a very gifted vocalist which is obvious. I love watching her live videos.

With fry screams your vocal folds remain closed, letting out air without producing a clear singing note. like a vocal fry with more pressure from the diaphragm, making the soft pallate and areas around vibrate, so keep throat and pallate relaxed, push with diaphragm and keep vocal folds closed. you need some pretty strong compression muscles to project it loud and even keep it for a few seconds. False chords are the same thing, but with vocal folds completely open the entire time. When done correctly you don't feel anything in the throat, but you feel a rumble in your soft pallate. Often get phlegm as well. So again, really good fry screamers can get it loud enough to sing along in a car cause they've worked hard on their vocal fold muscles. Newer and weaker vocalists will have to keep the volume low in order to maintain the scream.
