The story in the lyrics is an important part of the songs vocal choices.

Yeah - I wish people would find a better example though. Don't get me wrong - that is a great performance, but it is the last song of their set and she is gassed. IMO Who is Gonna be the One - Napalm Records is a better video because it is the first song of their set and she is hyped! But there are a ton of live video of Jinger now. Perennial at Wacken is good, but in my opinion, she has actually gotten much better at her vocal control since then.

As a voice coach and songwriter you should definitely react to the singer Floor Jansen with the band Nightwish at the 2013 metal festival at Wacken. The song Ghost Love Score gives a great sampling of her range , styles, and power of her singing. And, 95% of their music is written and composed by the keyboardist. Prepare for a wild rabbit hole ride. They are a very skillful group who play for the music not to stand out. They were playing live before a crowd of 82 thousand. They are best live.

Also check out Brittney from Unleash the Archers, Jessie from Ankor, Maria from Future Palace (try Malphas) and my new favorite: IKINÄ from Finland, with two amazing badass female singer/screamers, Katariina and Tuuli, who do it all in perfect harmony. In interviews Tati talked about how she spent a long time perfecting her growls because she wanted to sound like the male singers who growled. Usually women who do harsh vocals have a distinct quality from having a naturally higher voice, but she decided she didn't like that sound and spent ages working out how to sound more like a male vocalist doing growls. It's wildly impressive.

They've become my favorite band since Rush retired. Their catalog is that consistently good. Their musicianship and passion are that strong. Their live ethic has that integrity. Their chemistry is that perfect. BTW, I saw Rush 36x. I hope to see Jinjer as many times. I'm at 2 so far as well. Their live performances are purely epic.
I'm jealous if you have tickets for April, that must mean Milwaukee, Vegas or Arizona. The only three American dates they've announced. I'm strongly considering the long trip from Alabama to Wisconsin or Arizona. My drummer went to Sick New World last year and that's a hard pass for me. But both those others are exactly the right kind of gig for Jinjer. Headlining, not supporting. Smallish but classy venue. General admission. So, it's been a long wait. The original show was scheduled on my birthday, so it was kind of a gut punch when it got cancelled. They're not scheduling any more shows in the spring because they're in the studio working on a new album. Hopefully, they'll add some dates in September/October, because they'll be back in the States for Aftershock and Louder Than Life. The time signature flips between 7/8 and 6/8. That's nothing, though. Their song I Speak Astronomy goes through four time signatures in the first minute!
If you're interested in more, but different, female pyrotechnic vocals, may I suggest Way Too Long by contemporary prog band Bent Knee, fronted by Courtney Swain.

You guys a great, it makes real fun to look your vids! Regarding Jinjer: after this total distraction by the first encounter with Tati and this fantastic musicians - take also a look at the lyrics, they have the same quality as anything else regarding the band!

A little disclaimer: the vocals in the video's final audio mix were not from this live session, they were from the album recording, with a few edits and adds: they cut the harsh vocals part in the belting segment at the end and add a few layers of harsh vocals to the chorus part. This is mentioned in the video description, they weren't trying to deceive anyone.
Mind you, all the vocals were done by Tatiana for the album, they were just arranged differently for this version because the video was filmed to showcase the, new at the time, drummer and not the vocals. What you saw Vlad, Roman and Eugene play in the video are what you heard but obviously they added a different clean and distorted guitar track, also from the album recording.
Can't wait to watch you guys react to Perennial (live at Wacken 2019) for some amazing breath control and switch-ups from harsh to clean on a dime and to Who's Gonna Be The One (live) or Pit of Consciousness (live in Kiev) for some deep, deep growls, Banshee-high screams and a little surprise at the end of WGBTO. 😉

Excellent reaction guys! I'm new to your channel, but not to Jinjer, or to Jinjer reaction videos. Instant sub and like. I like your discernment. Good combo of vocal understanding/appreciation and compositional knowledge. And that's all put to good use with Jinjer!
More Jinjer please! You can't go wrong anywhere you turn. They're just all good. I'm a pro musician and singer for 45+ years, and these guys excite me like few bands have. Their sound is amazing. Their musicianship is off the charts. Their tightness and cohesion is almost superhuman, like a flock of birds all changing direction at once. Their live passion and precision are legendary and thrilling. Their professionalism is impeccable. They blend multiple genres. And they're unpredictable; there's a surprise in almost every song, like old school breakfast cereals lol. The songwriting is captivating. Great reaction fodder.
Jinjer is both a fine wine and a gateway drug. I never enjoyed harsh vocals until Tatiana. She's stoked an appetite for more, and I've discovered a whole world of amazing bands. Maybe none quite as great as Jinjer, but nonetheless excellent. I've found a special affinity with women who can both sing and scream beautifully. Spiritbox, Arch Enemy, Ankor, Future Palace, Vintersea, Infected Rain, Hanabie, Lutharo, Rage of Light, and many others. And my new favorite: IKINÄ from Finland, featuring not one but TWO killer badass female singer/screamers in Katariina and Tuuli. They can do it all in perfect harmony, and they front an amazing band. Check out their video for Rituaali--but it's just the tip of the iceberg. The latest album is heavy, dark and djenty ala Spiritbox's latest (though it came out earlier) but all three albums are packed with banger after banger.

None of it is live, it's the same vocals as the album version. If they added anything it was also prerecorded. This is lip synced.

      @j.f.fisher5318 Місяць тому

The video description sounds like they were recoding vocals to layer into the original recording. Stacking the album version over this they sync up perfectly so the original recording is definitely in there. That said, their actual live stuff is phenomenal so (shrug)

    • @iantellam9970
      @iantellam9970 Місяць тому

@@j.f.fisher5318 The main difference is the new drum track and a few production tweaks here and there. The tracks are even an identical length so little has changed. This is the best version of this song though.
Tbh I think there are more impressive vocal performances by Tati anyway. The Judgment and Punishment one take for instance, or Pit of Consciousness in Kiev.
But this is essentially a music video.

    Few points worth noting:
    - The mic type. It shows that the growl is actually not very loud, just very much amplified
    - This *is* partially prerecorded, you can hear layering there, added to the scream and to the regular voice (e.g. she's whispering in some moment)
    - Belting up to F5 is a tell-tell sign that she's using her voice correctly
Great explanation of how the growl is produced!

🔥Welcome to Jinjer, Richard and Johnny! I just found your channel, great reaction (I loved seeing Richard on a happy roller-coaster and Johnny's shock to the depths of hell 😅), subbed! Thank you for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics!
The first time I heard Pisces in 2019 I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wake up alarm for a few years and I still love it more every time I hear it).
TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂
Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs!
My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣
All four current members of Jinjer have essentially no formal musical training except Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit hfor her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the latest album Wallflowers. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs.
Jinjer has been a tour-heavy band, touring almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020 and much of the time since then (with interruptions by covid and the US backed coup/proxy war), hard work that has made them fantastic live performers. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine in 2009 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members and you can see their former guitarist turned actor, Dmitry Oksen, in older videos on guitar and a more recent video (Disclosure) playing an interrogator.
One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, Dip A Sail, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that could do well together in one reaction if you're so inclined).
I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video).
Thank you, Richard and Johnny! I hope you'll keep trying out more Jinjer songs and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

    Men,
My first time visiting your two channel. Jinjer is the band. The lady singing is Tatiana. A couple of key points they are from the Ukraine and English is not their/her primary language. A hint when the drummer switches over to rim shots, business is about to pick up!!! This ladies vocal skills are special. She figured out how to do this by herself!!! I have seen people become frightened by her growl. It took a while for me to realize the band members are good also. I guess I was focused on that good looking singer!!!
I shall submit to you two that this group is the best thing EVER to come out of the former U.S.S.R. By far the best!!!!!! Her stage presence is unmatched! Men you may want to locate and review their sit at Wacken Music festival. There are videos of her speaking and showing her stage makeup. And she is interviewed by Elizabeth of the Charismatic Voice. ALSO
Miss Christina Russo an opera singer formally trained singer is trying to learn how to do this. it is a funny video...
Men I agree with you this is WOW!!!! Thank you gentlemen!!!! This was FUN......... Wacken.

May I make a suggestion for something totally different? Check out The Warning - the 3 Villarreal sisters from Mexico. I’ve been following their musical development for about 7 years. They now have 3 albums under their belt and a 5 album deal with Lava Records. Nothing complex about their song structures but full of great riffs and hooks. Straight forward rock. I’ve seen them 2x and they are fantastic live. They’ve opened for FooFighters, Muse, GnR, Halestorm and others. I think they’re the future of rock. Want to see you agree.

You're right about the way they recorded it. It's a standard live session where the band plays the base parts together and then it's added to. A must listen for them in terms of vocals would be Judgement and Punishment One Take Vocal. It's just her with a microphone with the band recording so it's a great way to see what she does. Also Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 is a great live on stage video. You pretty much can't go wrong with any of the official videos live or studio but there are highlights. Another good one for vocal gymnastics is Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv, On the Top Live in Kyiv, Vortex, Wallflower, I Speak Astronomy. Tatiana's lyrics are all very good BTW.
