Voice teacher Sam Johnson's reaction to Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Demi Lovato, and Christina Aguilera singing their hardest vocals.
I hope this observation on how they sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

I have no idea what you are talking about.
10/10 would listen to you talk about whatever the hell you were talking about again.
Pyrela 100% same.
me
Title states it all
dude same
Yuuuuup. 💯
Him: ok but a G5 isn't hard dude!
Me, knowing nothing: yes. correct.
Hahaha I love this comment.🤣 That's exactly how I feel watching MOST things (like pretending I understand judges on ANTM, Top Chef, etc.) Music is one of the only things I get.
Him: ok but a G5 isn't hard dude
Me, a baritone: Now, really...?
@@Sam-ej4hluuuuugh I feel that in my bones! I'm an alto 2/tenor. Soprano 2 on a GOOD day (& like 15 years ago 😘).
(But I took it as it's easy for her range.)
Him(im just randomly saying this even though I know none of this correct and has nothing to do with the video ) :the g6 and the falsetto sounded breathy on the second note and the larynx didn't have enough room to change so they had to come back down on the b flat and then slide up from the chest voice and that allowed enough air flow through the a sharp. So in the end it worked out well. Me: Mhm 😂 😂.
I'm not a singer and know nothing about singing but this is fascinating
Same here!! I can sing ok (some people have told me I have a lovely voice) but I have no idea what I'm doing and have no singing training. Watching this is facinating!!!!
Nicole Chauncey I just wrote almost the exactly same thing before seeing your comment.
it's me
Me too! I would love to learn how to sing, but I am openly not a talented human hahahahhahahh
Same 100 😂 here i am analyzing the analysis and but really i know nothing lol
Me, about to sing in the shower: okay, you can do this, remember Sam said a G5 isn’t hard!
Also me: what’s a G5 though
😆🤣
Ok but me as fuck lmao
This! This so much!
Think of a G5 as you kinda shouting a song? That’s the most basic way to describe it i can think of
G5 is "See anybody could be good to youu..you need a BAD GIRL TO BLOW YOUR MIND!!!!!!!!!!"
“I feel like we should just give Christina a break and let her lip sync for once” 😂 someone put this on a t-shirt
😂😂
LilyMaeMua - i agree. Sometimes the scratching in her voice makes me depressed.
LilyMaeMua -
Frr!!
Merch idea. I’d buy it.
I’d buy it tbh
And also some singers start to hate performing a song that they have to sing every single time they perform and give it less than 100%.
To add to this, I'm sure a lot of that "dodging" or not holding a note as long, etc. is just them switching it up to avoid redundance. I'm sure anyone would change how they sang a song 8+ years later.
And maybe they have a lot more songs left to sing in their set and are saving their voice for other difficult songs or parts.
Can you imagine having a hit song that reached # 1 and the thrill and excitement of it all, and now you have to sing that same song, at every gig for the next 30 years?!? The agony and the ecstasy of it all...
Unless ur Steven tyler
Yeah but it's their job and ppl want their money's worth when attending a live show.
You definitely make a good point.
Kelly’s voice is so horse cause she got kids to yell at. Lol
That made me laugh !
holly stirewalt 😂
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣True story
YASSSSS! 😂
Hoarse* 🐎🐎
The thing about women's vocals, sometimes they change after you've gone through a pregnancy and often time you have to work with a vocal coach during and after to adjust.
Very good point!
Great point. Especially during pregnancy you physically don't have the lung capacity due to the pressure of your expanding uterus on your diaphragm.
This happened to one of my friends. Her speaking voice is deep now. Her voice mail is the same from years ago and it's soooooo high. She songs soprano, but not as high as before
Thats transphobic, biggot
@@anitabonghit2758 If you're talking about me I'm definitely not trans phobic. It's the truth. pregnancy hormones can cause your voice to permanently change. And during pregnancy your diaphragm can stretch.
He’s so reasonable, we’re not used to this on UA-cam 😂👏🏽
A bit too critical? He's calling things as he hears them, and giving very reasonable criticisms as well as compliments where they are due. While you can't sing, he is a professional vocal teacher commenting on professional vocalists and is providing a lot of insight that anyone learning vocals can use.
This guy could teach you to sing. And we are not used to this in general society. Often we believe what we have been conditioned to believe. That you either have a gift to sing or not.
What you’re referring to is called “professional”. People who are rude and simply put people down, or TROLL are usually can’t/Don’t types
So is mine yet I can sing decently for the most part. It is a huge misnomer that you can't learn to sing just like every other instrument. Just takes practice
@Porky WithAPistol But you can sing! It may not be a pleasant sound to other people, but if you love belting out a song when you're driving and you enjoy that, then you are singing. I'm rubbish at getting the right notes too, but I love singing along in the car on the way to work in the morning. It makes me happy. And that's what singing is about - making you feel something. Just because it doesn't sound good to others doesn't mean you shouldn't sing. Just maybe keep it to when you're alone!
He should be a permanent judge in idols.
Kinksutin fat facts
Nah he’s too nice and decent for that, they want judges that bring drama unfortunately
Them:
Flat.
Sam:
That wasn't flat.
*double checks*
Nope not flat.
Loved this! Nice that you picked up on it!
Also one of my favourite parts of this video!!
I got so excited because I was also thinking it didn’t sound flat! Watching Sam’s videos is actually teaching me something lol
I feel dumb because even after listening to it twice I still felt like it sounded just a wee bit flat even with the distortion (esp. when comparing it with a following note that also had distortion but definitely wasn't flat), not that I cared though lol. Whoops. Well. I am clearly Jon Snow.
copacetic agree
@@clausmadsen6754 it wasn't flat if you listen to the very beginning you here the G5
Am I the only one who feels that dodging is preferable to attempting a note and breaking? I really do think this should be more acceptable than it is... Thank you for being so reasonable. :)
Stevie Nicks agrees with you lol. She dodges EVERYTHING and has since about 1980. She's still got more range than she uses live, she'll pull it out in a controlled environment (i.e. the studio). But you can see why she dodges if you listen to her ending on Rhiannon from the Rosebud documentary (1976) vs her attempting it in 82 on the Mirage tour. The second time she hits the high notes but they have a strained quality.
@@JC-yy8iv I've always thought that professional singers tend to come in 2 categories. Some, like Christina or Whitney Houston, are vocalists. She sang a bunch of songs that are mediocre but the point isn't the music, it's her talent as a singer. The other category, like Stevie Nicks or Bob Dylan, are musicians. The point of Stevie isn't that she's this phenomenal singer. It's the emotion and style she puts in a song. The difference between the categories is essentially whether or not they'd sound good singing the national anthem.☺️
I dont even see the discussion at all. Try performing infront of > 1000 people trying to deliver consistent high quality performances; you cannot always practize all of your songs to ultimate perfection and might throughout the years change your style of singing so that earlier stuff becomes more difficult. I would do the same
Ofc it is but people are stupidly greedy wanting the singers to hit the notes live to “prove that they can” I hate that. They have nothing to prove when they’ve proved themselves already
Yes. As a professional singer we often find ourselves having to make this choice on the fly. One Christmas Eve I had gotten horribly ill but was under contract to sing some church services, including O Holy Night. In the final service my voice was simply exhausted. As I was approaching the end of the piece I had the choice to attempt the optional high note on "divine" and risk sounding like a dying cat, or doing damage, or go for the safe bet and take the lower option that I had already sung multiple times during that piece. There was only one choice. Better for the listener and better for me.
Every single comment on this is so positive which is such an unusual and pleasant thing to see on UA-cam
Oops
I feel like a lot of the videos where people are compiling clips and shit are just really elitist. They also like to construct some kind of controversial/negative narrative, prob cause it's good clickbait.
It's because he's so damn pleasant seeming. Ive been watching these throughout this mushroom trip while sitting in my yard lol
i don't even care about singing and performance but i'd watch this guy analyze shit all day
Shawn McCormac all day
Like actual shit too?
Omg same
He’s so handsome!
Same!
He looks like what you’d get if Edward Cullen and Jacob black had a love child
LMFAO
I'm dead. Can't unsee it.
He's very handsome
This is so refreshing! It’s like the opposite of salacious “you won’t believe how fat/old/ugly these stars have become!” clickbait articles. I learned something new about singing, I liked, I subscribed, and I went away feeling like I’ve found a UA-camr who’s out here making the world just that little bit better. Really made my day tbh
DITTO!!!! 😊😊😊😊
Bro you analyzed this like a English professor analyzing a poem. I mean that in a good way
THIS!
Yes, very professionally and constructive.
In the poem stated above, why did the poet describe the curtains as a shade of purple?
I dunno man, this is more like a weightlifting coach analysing a heavy lift. Physical actions versus the interpretation of an abstract concept expressed through written texts? I think you're meaning that this guy knows his shit and can then explain it really well.
I want to sit down and talk about life with him. What a pleasant guy
I know right!? I wanna have coffee with him :)
More like tea :D or lunch in Indian restaurant, but back to the point, yes he is amazing! :D
totally :D
Ikr, he would make a good counselor lol
I'd have a cuppa and a piece of cake with him to be honest ...be nice to pick his brains on techniques at the same time :) very likable person
This is exactly how my husband sounds to me when he starts talking about computers, couldn't understand anything:) but I enjoyed watching it!
THE WAY HE YELLED, "G5 ISNT HARD DUDE" AND THEN FELL BACK AND SANG ALONG 😂😂
Am I the only one who kinda, like *REALLY* wants to hear Sam sing?
Seconded

Plot twist: he can’t sing
instantsurgery I thought he sounded good
He is a vocal coach not Adam Levine. Every singer especially the better ones have a vocal coach. You almost always have a degree in music and often have a masters degree to be a legitament coach. That or have some sevant level music theory and most important is ear training. Lots of people like this have perfect pitch hearing. Meaning they can turn there back to a piano and you can hit a key and they can turn around and hit the same key because of hearing the note played not by watching.
I agree with him. Christina has already proven her talent. Singers are not immortal, and if she needs to give her throat a break that's not a shameful thing.
I mean look at Mariah, every watching his clip on her best and worst he States that getting older can change your singing
Same here dude. It's nice that he cut her some slack unlike a lot of people who jump on the train of attacking her like they expect her to sound the same. Singers just can't sustain those high notes forever.
@mad ass Britney's Tour is sold out, so there are a lot of people who buy those tickets.
She was singing live. She only lip sinked for one part of the song so if you wanted to not hear her sing you'd be pretty ripped off I think.
Yeah, if you are buying a ticket to a concert to you are paying for the " show " 95% of the time, not to have them get on stage and belt out their best renditions for 2-3 hours. Some artists have the technique and stamina to do that while on tour night after night, but it's not a common thing. And honestly, I wouldn't want that from most of the artists I follow, I want their best show performance.
Like if you were to go see Pink live in concert, trust me you would want to see her dance and do her wire choreography more than if she sat on a stool and focused solely on her vocals. You'd rather have had Chester from Linkin Park to be animated charismatic while getting the crowd involved instead of just him standing under a spotlight focusing on pure vocals.
When I go to a live event, I want it a little fast and loose like a party so that everyone can be unashamedly passionate and enjoy the atmosphere. I don't want it to feel like they're auditioning for the X-factor.
I like how fair you are to all these singers, instead of bashing their “bad live performances,” you applaud the way they’ve handled their voices.
You’re a great teacher.
I don’t know why I’m here but I watched to whole thing
Yeeeep. Ended up subscribing to him.

Omg totally!!
Kitsy Loveletter I don’t think I’d ever stop talking to him. He’s interesting lol.
I know, cute too
Untill you mention something about G5
owo
What a refreshing critique. He isn’t slamming everyone and explains so clearly what it is they are going for. This guy is AMAZING! Had to subscribe 🙂
Right!
Maybe he just didn’t want to point out that some of them are shitty singers/performers.
ToutCQJM None of them are “shitty” singers. They can all sing. He clearly explains the problem in the video, rather than saying they are shitty. If you actually watched the video, you’d know.
Agreed! I was nervous about watching this videos because I hate it when professional voice coaches/violinists/whatever are cruel and they often seem to get a kick out of tearing other people down. This guy made my day. He was understanding and gave constructive suggestions instead of a barrage of insults. Thank you for restoring a little piece of my faith in humanity.
And he's adorable too.
I used to have a vocal teacher (about 10 years ago) that talked like this about the way I sang and the things she said still sit with me to this day because they’re so intelligent and constructive! Why this is in my recommended now!? Ill never know! But im happy to find this channel
Anyone that hates on Christina is insane. She’s proved herself a long, long time ago. Let the legend be
The hate is not on her voice, but her attitude.
Um shes queen or icon ..But legends are Mariah carey céline Dión , whitney houston barbra streisand aretha franklin patti labele .. Thoose with around /at least 30 years of carrer, comercial success and influenced new artist are legends..christina is getting There But Not quite yet

A lot of singers lower their songs 1 or 2 notes because they are on tour or they have a lot of performances back to back that they need to rest their vocals.
Carla Fis thanks for sharing
but if you’re singing correctly, there’s no need to “rest your voice”. it won’t become damage at all if you’re singing with a proper technique.
It's a muscle like every muscle it wears out. My sister has been training since she was 5, she's 22 now and she has proper technique. It doesn't matter if you're touring you most likely don't rest properly.
@@arianafacts Wrong. Like Carla said, your voice is a muscle. There is a such thing called overuse. It happens to everyone.
changing keys is deadly for muscle memory....taking it down a half can have a big effect. Two keys? No....
Highlighter would look amazing on his cheekbones
Agree! Amrezy 🤗
hahahaha
😂😂
He has very dewy skin, not lying..
Hmmm... What??!? 🤣
"G5 iS NoT haRd"
Yeah right then why do i sound like a dying creature trying to hit a G5..
Erinn 😭😂
G5 is probably not hard for a soprano, the same as C2 or a C3 would be impossible for an alto to reach.
😂😂😂🤣😂🤣
@@101spacegirl G5 is definately not hard for a soprano you're correct there. I know from experience in singing this note as a soprano in my choir. But I have the highest vocal range there so yh. I can actually get to a D6 which is the highest note that anyone can sing in my choir. Yet we haven't sung this note in any pieces. And when there was once a C6 ina piece, I didn't get picked to do it bc my vocal coach doesn't know how high my vocal range actually is lol
This guy really knows what he's talking about.
It's possible that some singers also feel like changing up a song after singing it so many times
They change it up because they can no longer do it the way they use too. Many singer try using the power of their voice, and it really destroys your voice. Jon Bon Jovi did it in 1986 when Slippery When Wet came out. He tried to hit all those high notes he recorded from the studio, and found it hard to do them live everytime.
Afterwards he finally got a vocal coach to teach him how to actually sing. Ever since then Jon doesn't those notes anymore and allows Richie Sambora or David Bryan to sing them instead, because they are the back up singers and can hit the high parts easy.
CavemanJesus4Life they also change them up because it brings new interest in a show. Tom Jackson, who is an icon coach for a lot of the top acts in the world, talks about it in his book Live Music Method. This technique is common in live performances. It can also be used when a singer isn’t feeling up to par and may need to change the notes or even the entire key because they still want to put on a show even when they have a cold. There can be several reasons someone would change up their vocals in a song when they’re live. It’s not only because they can’t hit the note, but it can be.
Sam even discusses this sometimes, he can tell a singer is testing their range by different things they do while singing - and if they don’t feel comfortable in one of those tests then they may change the way they approach their high note.
We’re not perfect every day. Sometimes you can hit a note perfectly and two days later it’s not as comfortable, but then the next day it’s easy again. Singers are humans and humans are fallible.
But anyway, my point is sometimes the change is actually pre-planned for aesthetic.
CavemanJesus4Life Ah wow! I love that album and was trying to think of what parts you're talking about. Here are a few off the top of my head:
I'd Be There For You: "Didn't mean to miss the birthday baby, I wish I'd seen you blow those candles out......OUTTTTT!"
Never Say Goodbye - one of the past Goodbyes. Not super high though.
Raise Your Hands - the high scream at 3:29.
But what are the others? I feel like only the first one I listed is a good example.
The chorus of Livin' on a Prayer and the verses of "Bad Medicine" are a couple of others where he either altered the vocal line for live performances or stopped singing the high parts entirely. He may not have started doing that until the 1990s, though.
CavemanJesus4Life Totally agree. I watched singers Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova from t.A.T.u sing at their recent solo concerts, both of them sang their song from their early years "Nas Ne Dogonyat/ Not Gonna Get Us" and I noticed right away they both had key changes as well as tempo and pitch. I understand for Yulia Volkova as she has damaged her voice from surgery and endless screaming. However I was surprised by Lena Katina changing the tempo and key. I know their voices have changed and they no longer have the 15 year old voices of their youth but now have matured since their in their 30s.
I'm not a singer. I'm not interested in singing. I don't know what exactly triggered UA-cam to recommend this video to me. AND I don't understand half the stuff being explained! But shit....I'm totally subscribing LOL. The way you explain things just pulls me in. This was very pleasant!
You just perfectly explained why I am here.
I kinda only want to ever listen to him talk about singing technique and i never thought i wanted to listen to someone talk about singing technique.
omg like same and i would totally wash his hair i think i love him
So agree. I'm a little lost in his explanation, yet I WANT to know more. His professionalism pulls you in to learn his trade
Ditto
As a 100% ear musician, I love hearing the logistics behind what I do. I would love to sing for you and hear all the information behind it! Also, what a gentle heart. You were so kind about each and every singer. So positive.
G5 isn’t hard? Can someone relay this message to my vocal chords because they didn’t get the memo
MOOD LMAO
@Lewis Woodhall wait what? I don't get it
Yeah
I assume he meant that it's not hard for her, because I know that for some people they wouldn't be able to reach it as easily as Demi does.
He reacted to Dimash's songs brfore this... So anything from then doesn't seems hard once you watch Dimash live singing
I don't know anything about this at a professional level but one thing that's really compelling is your obvious passion and knowledge. This is how I get sucked into a 15 minute video on wood carving. This is really excellent content. So unpretentious and well articulated.
Agreed!
belsekar ..Well said! I'm not really into these particular singers - I've never even heard of 2 of them - his professionalism, obvious passion & personality kept me interested. Plus I enjoy learning new things. Most recently, an amazing video about how armor was made for knights and their horses has become MY woodcarving video. A lot of times, an articulate video maker such as this gentleman gets me interested enough to learn more about some random subject, like antelopes of the world, the aforementioned armory-making and other wierd subjects to do further research on the various subjects.
Yes! I've no familiarity with professional signing at all, but I just really adore the lovely attitude, combined with the expertise!
belsekar couldn’t agree more! Don’t know why this popped up for me but I watched the whole dang thing and loved it
belsekar this made me laugh. I completely relate to the whole getting “sucked into a 15 minute video on wood carving”. I just LOVE watching people talk about things they’ve OBVIOUSLY studied as their life’s passion (when not pretentious about it, if that makes sense)
Wish you could critique my shower voice
Diana Bahena he would say it’s fine, you just need to relax 😂
Same! Probably be the nicest person anyone’s ever said about my singing 😂
I'll listen to it 😊
Sounds soapy and shampooish just add little body wash and maybe dove youll be fine

(If you over 18)
Y'all gotta remember, women's voices naturally deepen as they get older. A lot of these singers don't train for it so to speak. They think they can just keep on screeching like christina does
"A G5 is easy!"
**Cries in contralto**
This shocked a cry/laugh out if me. Lord. I felt that *cries is contralto.*
Having your voice change can be really scary.
That's good news. I'm Asian and I seem to be the stereotypical anime girl when I speak. I'm 28 goddamn years old.

And apparently after childbirth too... 😭😭😭😭

So nice of you to say
Not a voice teacher in any way shape or form, but I’m an amateur singer. What he says makes sense. I sing mostly by ear and even this morning when I was singing along with Christina’s work from Burlesque. It hurt me to sing that high with the vowel choice that I thought resembled hers the most.
Also, any tips on how to keep my from going shrill on the last bit of “Oh Night Divine”?

Sam, I love how polite and kind you are with your comments. Very generous. I cannot sing for the life of me, and like your videos very much! Good energy. Thank you for such great work!
I just love how he delivers his comments. It's straightforward and very fair.
I'll speak as a singer myself. I've noticed a lot of the times they show these singers hitting these high notes is on things like live TV you hit those notes there, because it is impressive. Touring is a different beast, you thrive on consistency on tour. It is better to hit a note that is slightly easier to hit that you can do more consistently, than a note that if you hit that every night for two weeks would just kill your throat, and you'd lose your voice barely into a tour. Two totally different environments
Absolutely true
Trust me as a singer, I learned the hard way mainly as a metal/punk singer, where you're also go from rough to sometimes oddly operatic tones. When I first played live at 16 I wanted to be Mr. Showoff. I'd hit these massive falsetto notes, that took a lot out of me. I played three shows in a row, and I could not sing correctly due to my throat being done, even throat coat didn't help. I hooked up with my music teacher actually to show me how to hit impressive notes in a live setting without taking the wind out of me.
With all the hazers I don't c how u do it
Just like Axl Rose right? Or was it just drugs?
Agree
Yes!! I’m an opera singer and this is one of the first videos I’ve seen like this that is a) accurate and b) really nice and encouraging. I can tell you’re a wonderful voice teacher. Thanks for sharing this with the (sometimes harsh) internet world!
He's a gem.
Love your work Sam...you’re so knowledgeable and very technical, yet passionate and encouraging. So good to watch you.
I miraculously understood the video without knowing a single terminology he said 🤔 I guess that's the sign of a good teacher?
Its midnight, i dont sing nor do i care about it. Still gonna watch every second of this.
Same. 2am here
My life right now

But i beth u are gay ..

My God, there's so much technique on singing. Never realized that.
yeah this actually made me feel better for not being able to sing, i didn't know there was so much to it
It’s much much harder than it seems.
It's very exhausting, too: you use your whole body to sing :] Tough stuff!
On some levels it's probably the most difficult instrument to master.
Daniela Tovar That's because your hearing skill is on par with your singing skill (inexistent) xD
I appreciate you, Sam. I've viewed your channel on occasion over the years, then just recently began viewing more regularly, and Ive noted in *every* critique that you've offered, you have remained very frank about performances/performers we've seen, and uncompromisingly professional, fair, reasonable, realistic and kind, but still always frank in your feedback and instruction. In other words, you're a genuine pleasure to watch. Thank you.
i love how supportive you are of artists! you make music seem so accessible.
I know next to NOTHING about vocal technique- but found myself interested in this. You are good.
Alzy Choze same lol !!
Same :-P
hahaha i love how as the vid went on, he started getting annoyed by the uploader lol
"No it's NOT flat"
"The G5 is the EASY PART" hahahah i love him
Yeah, some of the uploader's were trivial (catty).
I Think a lot of performers like to change it up a little from time to time too.
Best part is whe he says "G5 is not hard" and he is right
Certain times when a song is changed during a live performance, it's either the singer is exhausted from the night prior, and now has strained vocals, or they performed the song so often that they want to change it up a bit, take runs out, add high-notes etc.
It adds to the song imo. For Miley's change, I think she did it cause she knows she can't reliably get to those high notes and would rather maintain a great live performance, than to kill it with 1 note. As we all know, you can perform a song great but 1 hiccup and it can derail the entire rest of the song, and make it rather bad or not memorable. Definitely was a logical change to repeat 1 verse. And tbh sounds better(even though I hate her music, and don't really think she has a great singing voice but others do, and respectably she has hit great success for multiple years.)
Leona appears to have fatigue, or due to her age, might not be able to reach those notes anymore at will, and is more or less a "can I do it?" type deal and when she feels she can, she does which means she has to ad-lib high notes that she used to do flawlessly.
Like muscles, the voice can get strained, damaged and therefore lose the luster it once had. It's not a shock after many years of ripping out the notes she can't reliably do it. She's still fucking amazing. And so is Christina. Somehow Christina just maintains peak performance.(albeit she chooses when and when not to use lip syncing. It saves her voice and allows her to perform the rest of her set with a healthy voice vs a now damaged and exhausted voice. It's like weight lifting, if you start off heavy you burned out, you taxed your body right off the bat and the rest of your workouts suffer.)
I love how most of these videos is just Sam criticizing the video more than the artists singing in them! As someone who has studied music, music theory, and singing for a few years now (I'm by NO means an expert, but I'm still kind of knowledgeable) Sam is ON THE MONEY with what he's saying. People think that high notes in general are very difficult to sing, but in actuality, high notes can be a place of vocal rest for a lot of singers and be extremely comfortable to sing! It's that range between chest and head voice, where the flip happens that's the most challenging because your voice is fighting between the 2 registers and it wants so badly to default to one or the other. This is why practicing and perfecting mix voice is CRUCIAL for any singer. A good mix voice means easier transitions between the registers. Vowel choice is also incredibly important as well.
I feel like these video creators don't understand very basic fundamentals of singing and are just going by sound alone. It's very sad.
Flip is my biggest challenge.

"... I think that we should just give Christina a break and let her lip-sync for once! This is completely fine! It sounds great, it's a better performance! What's wrong with that?"
[EDIT]
"Thank you for watching..."
The change of mood!😂
Leona Lewis is so underrated
The girl can sing
Yes ma'am! I absolutely love her.
Agreed!
She deserves arianas career but she needs better songs.
Genuinely nice person with an unbiased opinion and and knowledge backed points. Love your work
I agree. A lot of times people just hate certain singers and so they are overly / unfairly critical
He's slightly biased towards them, actually, I feel. Which I like. He gives them the benefit of the doubt, just waves off their momentary uncertainty with his hand, saying "you can do it, you just have to believe in yourself the way I believe in you."
He doesn't say "I believe in you", but you know he does. He believes in you the way you want to be believed in. He's like Gatsby.
I never mind an opinion if it’s backed up 👍🏻
I LOVE the amount of knowledge you have and your passion for it!
You’d make a great conversation partner!
Dude! I love how honest and just.... correct you are with how you deliver your comments and critique. You're very classy and upfront about your musical education and it just shows how truly knowledgeable you are in your craft. Well done 🖤
Christina's voice is so beautiful when she scales back and doesn't over sing everything. Her worst habit is doing excessive runs.
those are where she shines! I love them
That habit of excessively over-singing everything, adding runs everywhere they have no business being, is precisely why I can't listen to her. I hate it, too, because she does actually have a beautiful voice.
This is why I so loved her when she sang on the “Say Something” track years back. It was nice to hear her just scale back a bit and appreciate her sound without all the runs distracting things.
@@jfarmer911 go listen to All I need from her bionic album.
artlover5 will do! I’m always looking for good songs to listen to.
so why can't you be a judge on those tv shows...
To be continued...
Yesss 🙏🏻 this guy should deffo be a judge!
Totally agree!
Because most audiences wouldn't want to hear the musical truth about their most beloved competitors on a reality show.
The sad part is that he doesnt bring enough "entertainment" he is too honest, understanding, and direct. Its sad that when people are acurate and respectful its not good enough for TV.
I feel like this is Ryan Reynolds trolling us all.

Xtina can sing
Mariah Carey can sing
If they decide to lip synch for the rest of their careers, who cares?! We know they can sing better than any and everyone 💁🏻
Celine too
Well, I care 😅 if I am paying for a show on their tour, I am expecting them to sing? They are singers, then sing.. if I am paying for a hotdog, I expect a sausage in it... deliver or quit. In the end; If I wanted them to lip synch, I could just put on their cd at home, that would be the same but cheaper...

1.2 mil views, YT algorithm did you good! Not sure why it was recommend to me, I'm not very interested in this topic, but I still watched the entire video and have to say you did a very good job analyzing. Very technical and forgiving.
Greifvogel same here 😆
Greifvogel lmao fr, this just showed up as a recommendation and the video was actually nice 😭
Yes, this comment, all the way. I've never watched anything remotely close to this type of video, but I found this incredibly interesting to watch and I appreciated his review, critique, and insight into something I casually enjoy (singing) but of which I have no in-depth understanding of technique.
Same, saw it come up so many timesI gave it a shot. Still, I can't sing but found it interesting enough.
same here! i came from a jenna marbles video.. not sure how i ended up here but i’m not disappointed
Sam, you are always so positive and give such constructive feedback. You cut people slack. You, who have the competence and knowledge to be able to judge, remind the haters : Singers sing from a human instrument. People can have bad days. You also always find the good. Blessings to you !
This is the first critique of his that I've watched, and I really enjoyed it. I've tried watching a few other vocal coaches but I feel like this one was the most interesting and informative. Very interesting and well done.
One thing I HIGHLYYYYYYYYY respect about you is that you make a fast quick precise intro to your video and start it off right away. Several UA-camrs these days always drag their introductions longer than they have to be and defeat the purpose of the video. Second, I like how honest you are and very specific about what you're describing. That's why I subscribed.
Amen 100%

I just randomly ended up here at this channel with no previous interest in singer vocals/coaching etc but the way you articulated and explained everything completely wrapped me in!! God damn you just found yourself a subscriber !
Same, I just saw the video on the right panel and decided to check it out....nice.
i agree, same here

Same thing with me
I think my favorite thing about this video is how you have so much passion towards everyone's abilities, and as an example specifically, how you addressed Leona. You made it a point to say that she had a mental block even though she totally can do it and indeed did it afterwards. Those encouraging words are so so so important and make me believe I can hit those notes too. If you were my teacher and said this to me I would 1000% cry because its so nice to be praised for being brave after being afraid of possibly messing up for so long. I love your videos, so educational and positive which is a nice change of pace
You are incredibly good at explaining and breaking down what the singers are doing in their performances. To the point that I'm learning in mere seconds more about my own voice and how to improve my own signing capabilities. Thank you so much for the free lessons, I'm really grateful for you and your time. My best to you kind ser. 🤗
Here's him play G5 on the piano: *internally singing black parade*
YES
OMG I was reading this comment as soon as he pressed the key and I was like BOOM lol
I actually flinched when he played that key xD
Oh good It's not just me xD
Sam: *hits G5*
Me: *gets out eyeliner*
The biggest thing the people making those videos don't seem to understand, is that in the studio you get 100 takes to do it right, live you get one chance and you can't go back. None of these sounded bad for live performances at all. Yes they could've done better, but after doing it night after night, you do what you feel comfortable with at that time. No time to redo second guessing yourself. Also, love your vids! Keep it up!
+Existential Toast I totally agree. Speaking from personal experience: I used to be a full-time computer programmer. At first I thought "this is my dream job". But after 6 years, I actually *dreaded* going to work, because it was the *same thing* day after day after day. I managed to get a transfer to the service & support division (same department, but we handle the physical stuff like fixing computers, setting up new computers, etc.) It's something different every day, and I'm much happier.
TL;DR: If I can get tired of doing the same thing day after day, then it's a sure bet that singers (and other musicians) can get tired of it too. So it comes as no surprise when they decide to change it up a bit.
@heather c you think that doing it in one take means it was their FIRST take? Plenty of artists do one take recordings, after trying it many, many times to perfect it and get it right.
@heather c 😉
omg I loved your Christina coment at the end, she has been an amazing singer for so long and everyone gets tired of doing so much for so long, u r really cool!
Sometimes people forget that the voice is a product of several elements inside the body and female singers have soooo much hormonal changes throughout their lives.
This can affect vocal range, especially when they have a child.
Thanks for sharing!! Many people believe that high notes are always the hardest part. They are easier to support and to place. But that pasaagio (bridge) is a biotch hahahah
I love how you get so mad at these videos bashing singers
Same
Because so many dont really know what they're talking about and have an extreme bias to older singers like Mariah and whitney
im so confused why he's getting mad. they aren't bashing them at all and the clips/examples have comments complimenting them.
Same
He is not bashing them, he knows all of these singers are exceptionally good in their own way.
As a speech language pathologist, I want to give you a hug for using the term “vocal folds”. 🙌
I just found your comment today! I'm still in high school and I'm looking into possible career paths. One of the things I enjoy is working with kids, and I have looked into becoming a speech language pathologist a little bit. Could you please give a little insight into your job? That would be so helpful and very much appreciated :))
And she never did :(
It's amazing how clearly you explain everything. ❤️
I like the way you break everything down so that someone like me (who knows nothing about singing) can actually get an idea of the technical stuff you are talking about, But I love the low key shade you throw at the "up-loader".
"G5 isn't hard dude!" me shouting at people who think playing blues riffs are hard
getting out of D5 is way harder. Been stuck there in season 6. Glad I made it to master in Season 7tho.
A G5 for a professional singer with the soprano range, is not hard... or at least it shouldn't be!
@@rayarthey3706 for soprano yes but still for lower voice to mix a g5 is pretty hard. Im an alto and for me is very hard. My voice k

@@feridedogan7653 I understand, is not easy for an Alto as it is out of her normal and comfortable reach! I'm a tenor instead... and as you may know your voice type should be closer to mine than what it is to a soprano!
@@rayarthey3706 yea i guess . i sound pretty good on f 5 in head. But after my voice just crush. Actually my last confortabe note is the e 5 . after the e 5 i got very airy and start whistle at a5 lol
I'm so glad I found you. I personally always thought higher notes were easier to sing and I was always so confused when people would be impressed by performers doing high notes. Honestly lower notes were really hard for me and I always preferred to sing higher, but no one ever seems to get impressed when low notes are done well. You are so informative and technical. I feel like I'm learning more from you in this past week than I ever did from my college vocal teachers.
Yes I feel you. When I used to study music performance, I found higher notes fairly simple but once I started getting better at lower notes, no-one was ever impressed (other than my vocal teacher at the time) and it'd make me sad lol like it's hard
Glad to know there is someone else out there who knows my pain. :)
Mariah's lower register always blew me away as much as her belts and whistles. Unbelievably low.
Would any of you like to mail me your high belt bc mine doesn’t exist

I love how you don’t criticize to be mean and you don’t make fun of an artist lip syncing or going flat on a note. It happens. I’ve seen so many other vocal coaches put the artists down on here. You’re the only one I’ve subbed to!
Agree.
Lmao wot
I can understand going flat on a note, sometimes it happens, but lip syncing? Honestly you set the bar low, huh?
Lip syncing is not acceptable...if you're a singer and getting millions for it you might as well SING.
SpillTheTea exactly its a talent, if a piano player just puts flight of the bumble bees or whatever in the background of his performance, were not happy with that, so whys it any different for these talentless people who don’t wright there own songs, all the have is a look, whats the point, i might as well be watching someone dressed as a bear sing it, at lest there might be some entertainment.
@@diamonique7741 eh if you're doing a full dance routine it's excusable
Sam, so far your critiques are my favorite. I have learned more about how to use - and not use - my voice watching you than I did in four years of undergrad with a Broadway producer mentoring my vocal studio!!! xoxo
Just recently discovered your videos and decided to start showing a few to my choir students. Your content is superb, and it's on point with distinguishing the differences in both vocal technique and vocal health. I.E.: class, this is why we switch to a different vowel with high falsetto. Even the pros sometimes have bad days. Maintaining the mindset of focusing in on what your vocal cords should properly feel like at each point is important.
Excellent education, Sam!
You're EASILY the best vocal coach reactor that I've seen on youtube. You're very unbiased without being harsh and a person can see that you really know your stuff. Thanks for the the awesome info always. It would be so epic to see you review screaming vocals, like parkway drive or trivium.
Oh yeah, would be so nice a reaction to Heafy
I like seeing vocal coaches getting angry at this video, “G5s NOT HARD DUDE”.
I will say I think the uploader is saying the singers either can’t OR don’t do these hard vocals anymore not necessarily JUST can’t.
Becoming a bigger fan of you with each video
I love how intelligently you express your opinion on things and how passionate you are about it, I really enjoyed this video!
You are clearly a true expert!! I love that you just tell it exactly like it is. It is about the voice and what the singer is doing which you know a lot about. Thank you for going so much in depth. I subscribed 5 minutes in! xx
Who is this sweetheart? I’ve never seen someone who teaches this kind of stuff and is legitimately nice and easygoing about it!

I would be tired if I were singing the same song for 11 years too. Lol. First time seeing your videos and I really like and respect it. Very professional and knowledgeable!
Same
I agree especially when songs that were my favorite when they came out and years later I am annoyed or don’t like the song as much or don’t like it anymore so I bet it’s the same way when a singer has to sing a song or songs for years
Worse, because they are always the most requested songs, and they can't just avoid singing them as we can avoid listening them.
I want a teacher like this. Could never afford it.
I’m glad you put these notes you have about singers in technical terms. As a shy shower singer myself, I watch singing shows such as the voice and many other musician-mentor related shows. I notice when singers lose their pitch or try using vowels or other things and such and don’t know how to describe singers’s voices. My grandma usually thinks I’m making fun of them or just being harsh when in reality sometimes the singer just can’t sustain a note and it hurts my feelings because sometimes it can be a songs sweet point!
