What a delightful surprise to find this interview as I am a huge Chaplin and Yes fan. I also enjoyed the interview with your Dad. I imagine he has many more interesting stories from his recording studio days (Queen?) that he might be willing to share. Other interesting interview subjects might be Kevin Brownlow and David Robinson.

As a fan of both Yes and Charlie, this is fascinating! Never knew Rick was a friend of the family!!!! I knew of Yes' sessions in Vevey, but never would've dreamed that the most visually appealing member in a prog rock band trying to make musical sense in the era of Punk Rock (in tax exile, no less!) would meet your granddad. Thank you, Spencer for this very insightful interview. Cheers.

Great interview, on humour and piano/comedy stand ups I just would have loved to ask Rick: What was his impression on Victor Borge? and if they ever met? Cheers.

I'm only finding out now that Wakeman played on THE KINKS Percy soundtrack piano on one song ( during the John Gosling period)

Great interview, Rick’s recollections are remarkably revealing. Few music people from that era are blessed with such a strong and detailed memory. It is important that this type of material is documented otherwise it disappears down the sands of time.
Rick’s comments on working on instantly forgettable sessions brings to mind a session I engineered in 1970 where he played piano on “Half Of Every Dream” by Richard Harris (produced by Maurice Gibb). That recording may well be included in the instantly forgettable sessions he refers to!
The producers of a UK top 20 hit I engineered - “Don’t You Know” by Butterscotch - reckon Rick was on their session too. However, he wasn’t. I only ever recorded him on that Richard Harris number.

Great interview! I think Rick was probably confusing Charlie with Harry Langdon, another great silent clown. Hal Roach replaced Stan Laurel with Langdon after a contract dispute, for 1939 film, 'Zenobia'.

I’m glad you enjoyed the interview!
I did some research after this interview and it turns out that Oliver Hardy did do some work with an actor called Billy West who was a famous Chaplin impersonator at the time. I assume that was what Rick was referring to but you could also be right!
Thanks a lot for tuning in
