Jeez, this was the most fun I've had in a while... Painfully funny at times... King Crimson! Really enjoyed a few of the videos over the last few days and learnt a lot too, heard some new music. Great stuff and great mix of guests across the shows... Thanks to you all.
I have a new favorite SOT video! :-) Gentlemen, I loved this. I loved it *so much* that I'm on my second full viewing of the complete video, lol! As much as I cherish most of the albums he chose, George had no mercy and took no prisoners, and I respect that! :-) Luis' relaxed, laid-back, cheery attitude about the *in-detail hating* (which was the point of the video, of course, hehe) of albums that he loves was great!
Almost like Roger Waters was an artist in a band and Ken isn't. Funny, that... I like when Pink Floyd lyrics are actually about something and not, you know, relatable and profound things such as getting your pilots license.
"This guy just should have been in therapy, and he shouldn't have made an album." "Well that was his f**king therapy." "Yeah, but why do I have to suffer." I feel that way about everything Roger Waters ever did. He created his own genre of music... "whine rock".
I would say his awful vocals don’t help, ND. I’ve never got on with Roger’s vocals and much prefer it when Gilmour sang, or even Richard Wright/Syd Barrett.
I have always been a Floyd/David Gilmour fan. I found Roger whiny and self-indulgent and quickly tired of his perpetual bad mood. However, I saw Roger live just before COVID and the show was totally awesome. I am really sorry I never got to see the original lineup, but glad I did get to see Roger. It was a bombastic, over-the-top arena show, but musically satisfying as well.
Also: "My father was in WW2, you don't see ME making an album!" "But your father LIVED!" "Yeah, and he wouldn't be caught dead listening to this shit."
Easily the best UA-cam video I have seen. Ever! Love the contributions from all, especially messrs Golden, Pardo, Nasser and of course Lamie. Outstanding stuff all.
Every Bloody Emperor is incredible. I was 16 in 1980 when I was handed an old heavy vinyl copy of The Least We Can Do ...my first listen to them . Awesome music . 👍
Pardon the pun but it’s “The Crime of the Century “ that this album by Supertramp was selected for the above category. How can anyone not love “ Rudy” as well the rest of this amazing album that has no filler on it . Most people will remember this album best for “ Dreamer “ and “ Bloody Well Right “.
@@christopherdavies3079 Tough to label categorize, which actually makes it great. Title track certainly very proggy to me. Bloody Well Right and School not so much. I seem to be in the minority on this, but its by far my favorite album from these guys.
Gentlemen - Epic episode! Some might not enjoy a review of what you don't like rather than what you do like but, at least to me, it provides additional insight to the views and opinions of people whose opinions you do generally trust and follow. Special kudos to Luis for participating from the hospital and more special kudos to George for adding a level of the unexpected to this great episode. Luis was right when he said "This is perfect" after George made his first pick. Most importantly, it emphasizes the SoT mantra "We all hear things differently." Perhaps the best - or maybe the worst - result of the episode for me is it created a new commitment to track down and re-listen to some of the albums that could not be tolerated when bought upon release to see if I still have the same reaction. First on the list is the 1969 eponymous album by the group named The Flock. We'll see what happens from there. But again - special thanks to Luis, George, Ken, Eric, Steven, and Pete for such a highly entertaining and, in its own way, educational show. Great fun!
Thanks John, loved reading your feedback. That's the exact spirit and approach I hoped the viewers would take. We all here things differently, and it gives viewers a chance to hear where we are coming from a little bit more. And honestly, having a few real belly laughs throughout the episode made it for me, an absolute blast. I really respect the opinions, whether I agree is not relevant, it was very interesting.
The 2019 remix of "Momentary Lapse of Reason" actually sounds like a proper Pink Floyd album. The 80s sound is stripped back, Nick Mason adds his own drum parts to most of the songs, and Rick Wright's keyboard parts from live shows are mixed into the studio tracks. The song "Dogs of War" is actually listenable. A much better sound than the original release.
I love Lapse Of Reason. Such beautiful songs. The guitar work is amazing and so heartfelt. If you ever have a break up listen to this album and the Division Bell. They'll catch and you'll never hear them the same way again. Both amazing gems in their own right.
This worked so well as each of you have earned the credibility from previous videos. Then we get to see how preferences work while still having respect. That works for me. Then the humor and ribbing was hilarious. My list 1) Yes - Heaven and Earth 2) Rush - Test for Echo 3) Pink Floyd - The Final Cut 4) Kansas - Freaks of Nature 5). ELP - In the Hot Seat Peace and thanks for the laughs.
Very heartfelt and entertaining! Great to see some warm-hearted ribbing and just how respectful you guys are towards each other's opinions. Standing ovation for you all!
Thanks Alan, I love being on with these guys, they really know there stuff. Respect them all, and fun to hear their opinions. We all have albums that we just don't like, that others feel are classics
I've seen this episode dozens of times by now. I love metal, not so much prog, but I really enjoy watching In the Prog Seat. I really enjoy the cast, especially the guys in this episode. Thank you for the good moments/laughs and your music knowledge. Really good show!!!
You guys are great. I appreciate your knowledge and your candid views. I'm a huge prog rock fan and listening to your views on the worst prog rock albums, I couldn't agree more. 100% disagree with the choice of Crime of the Century but 100% understand. It’s one of my all time favorite albums but I’m only allowed to listen to it when I’m alone. My wife and daughter both can’t stand it. It just goes to show that everyone has different tastes and we all need to respect that. Great conversation and show!
Ryan Hopefully you share a few albums that you all love. It's always a bummer when your loved ones literally forbid you from listening to some records but when you have a few you all love it more than makes up for it.
Thank you from Australia for the best fun I've had sitting down for a long while! The split screen made it look like the hospital had a wall of CDs...funny stuff and I love he way you all gave each other space ... Nurse! Nurse! (how about a female voice?)
We were at the Yes / Deep Purple show opening night at Hard Rock in Hollywood Fla! Both bands were outstanding! There was no video for Yes on stage behind the band. The venue had two video boards at each side of the theater. The large screen on stage only displayed Deep Purple, that’s all. Must have been a technical glitch part of opening night issues. The sound was great for both bands. The South Florida audience was very enthusiastic, like the Detroit and Toronto shows. As you all know, = 1 was recorded in Toronto near where the Toronto show took place. Deep Purple was firing on all cylinders! The set list was perfect!! All the new songs fit right in and blended with all the classics! We especially liked Black Night part of the encore schtick with Simon having the audience participate singing along, it worked! So much FUN ! We loved it ! Great time had by all!😊
Back in the '70's, when I was in my teens, I was heavily into prog (and still am). In the '80's, I was sorely disappointed that most of my favorite prog bands had greatly altered and watered down their music--especially Genesis. (And yes, Asia really pissed me off.) Still, I managed to see a few of the bands live--Rennaissance, Yes, Genesis, Rush and Wishbone Ash--and they were all FANTASTIC! Probably because--in the concert hall or club--they had a "captive" audience and had the freedom to do what they loved.
Best SOT show so far.Congratulations to all the guys ...it was a pure delight.Please.make a part 2 show...You ll find plenty of albums that suck...for sure .Keep up the good work.dudes.Respect.
For me, Luis 'nails it' when he says, "You can't hide song-writing." Along with Pete's own albums he hates, he did some ime ago .. it's interesting that the 'real' stuff comes out .. George is going for it .. Court of the Crimson King and Crime of the Century ... lol .. excellent. I love both albums .. but it's subjective and great fun.
Ngl when he picked "In A Silent Way" I had to stop watching for a minute. Imo that's a strong contender for the greatest fusion record ever. It was also clearly the sonic blueprint for a whole bunch of awesome 70s ECM records. And regarding Mclaughlin, the Miles records he was on, are for me his most enjoyable work, I'm not an expert of his discography but from what I've seen he became a bit of a shredder later in his career and that's not my cup of tea at all.
@@ursula3438 I was primarily amused by this guy's picks but it felt weird hearing that one. I mean, you can say whatever you want about Supertramp but Miles was like the Pied Piper of modern jazz. He led and everyone else followed.
It’s all subjective opinion, we hear things differently.. George said that he didn’t like one Miles Davis album. I’m not really into jazz at all full stop.
Although I disagree with a few picks (The Final Cut being a big one) this is surely one of the most entertaining vids the team has done. Odd because I don't like "snarkyness" but really this isn't that. Much more about individual taste and I find that fascinating. That and George's total fearlessness in the face of an impending avalance of "WTF dude?" responses. Go team...
I'm only up to George's first three picks and I think they are more true to what I assumed the show would be about - i.e. instead of picking obvious stinkers that most everyone considers stinkers, he picked albums that are rated highly.
Yeah but those are not rated highly without a reason :D In the Court is like the essence of Prog. I will never understand a Prog fan arguing with that album being one of the best of its genre. :D
This is my favorite episode yet. It's interesting to me that sharing your hatred for these beloved albums has a funny way of exposing your love for one another. In the end, that's what it's all about. You guys rock!
Great episode guys! I've never gotten Van Der Graaf so I found that one spot on. In The Hot Seat was dropped from Love Beach's ass for sure (and ELP is my favorite band) but to quote the classic line from the movie Christine: You Can't Polish A Turd! Another "classic" that has never clicked for me is Brave... there's a couple good songs in it (The Hollow Man kills) but I can't get into the whole concept - and I've tried several times. Cheers All!
The final cut would have to be one of the most divisive albums in history. I love it, I also love ummagumma. ITCOCK is ok but not brilliant, Red is better.
The Court Of The Crimson King is not my favorite KC album but it is amazing and was groundbreaking at the time. I remember seeing that cover as a little boy. I just wondered what could be inside. Later I found out. An incredible musical book of stories. Surreal and wonderful.
The anticipation, thinking a wonderful feast of prog was about to hit the eardrums......and we were served mickey d's. Bland and pompous, hard to pull off.
Luis made some really good points about the album "Under Wraps" and Ian Anderson. Is it classic Tull ? No. Is it a great Tull album ? No. But it is interesting music. Set these songs to different Instrumentation - guitar and flute - and the album doesn`t get dumped on. He`s right about Ian Anderson having a certain level of quality. It`s not my favorite Jethro Tull album and I get why people hate it, but the songs are a lot more interesting than most of what was being released around the same time period.
Thanks for watching Jeffrey, and I agree with Luis' take, that there are some good songs at the core. But the arrangements, production, lack of much Martin Barre and synth/drum sounds buried those songs in a pile of shit. Too much good Tull to spend time on Under Wraps for me. Appreciate and respect your thoughts, and thanks for watching!
Brilliant brilliant episode lads. Laughed a lot there. It's been mentioned already, but want to say SOT and esp these longer episodes have kept me relatively sane since the start of the pandemic and more recently definitely helped me cope with an unrelated health issue. Best wishes to Luis too, get better soon man. 😎
As for Spock's Beard, I'm all over the map with them. They can sound transcendent, or like 3 different songs having a traffic accident. I love the first Asia album... the second one is total trash.
Yeah I actually prefer Alpha over the first album. It's more melodic and has more symphonic feel. Astra is badly missing Steve Howe. Doesn't add anything new or creative. They sound almost bored.
Love Asia's debut and GTR's sole release. Admittedly, far from progressive milestones, but taken as AOR albums, both are fantastic collections that I enjoy to this day (and "Sketches In The Sun" remains arguably my favorite Howe solo piece). Great episode, guys. Love these discussions and the passion they stir for the music we love! BTW: What's the back story on the head bandage, Luis? Recent surgery? Just curious, as your hospital room and situation seems to be the elephant in the room.
I definitely need to check out more from Max Bacon. When ever I think of who my favorite vocalists are,for some reason or other I always forget about Max.
I remember ELP "Works" tour was the first concert (in the Detroit area anyway) to charge DOUBLE DIGITS!!!! ($11!!!) Never Mind that unlike most groups who bring in local orchestras each stop, ELP brought their own Orchestra/infrastructure.
Fantastic episode! Love your chemestry on screen. Episode 2 was also super entertaining. And I agree on some of the choices. Especially on the Soft Machine issue. I enjoy "Bundles" a lot and it's my to-go-to album with the band, but I also have problems with the legendary "Third" album. Really can't understand why that album is ranked so high. Still give it spins from time to time to find out, what I am missing. Some day I might find the answer.
This one is SO FUNNY you can see Pete DYING when George busted out in the Court of the Crimson King! Luis is hilarious he is like the Butch of the Prog Seat....I like Ken’s picks, completely agree on We can’t dance, worst Genesis record by a country mile and I think the Final Cut is way over rated.
ELP coming off Black Moon in 92, I was expecting Hot Seat to be as good. That didn't happen. It finally came on vinyl last year, and I held my nose and got it, just for the completist in me
Luis, you are spot on about Jon Anderson’s live demeanor, it’s really challenging to sit through, but I would put it to you that Olias, isn’t even really Prog, it’s more the beginnings of New Age music, so maybe that’s why you hate it so much, you don’t seem like much of a New Age Hippy! Get well soon!
In a Silent Way really surprised me. The album is all about Tony Williams. Miles even stands a bit to the side to feature Tony. The drum patterns are rhythmic fractals. They are absolutely amazing.
Your comment about tony will make me listen again but i thought they could have used al foster or someone else. Tony's work around that time with sam rivers and herbie's solo records were brilliant. In a silent way seemed to be a train stop heading for the monumental bitches brew.
@@norbiudeako518i actually prefer in a silent way to bitches brew has an extreme subtlety and by proxy peacefulness lacking in any of miles' other albums usually he either just goes full throttle with energy or leaves you suspending until he does again for brief periods he doesn't just usually leave you suspending for a full album though and i greatly appreciate he does do that on in a silent way even kind of blue has more drive and explicit progression to it than in a silent way does
What a fun and enjoyable episode. Ranks among my favorite episodes from SoT. I knew going in to this that The Astonishing was going to get beat up…it’s not for everyone but I love that record. Really surprised by Ken’s take on Nine by Circus Maximus. I think that’s their best. It’s Havoc that I would absolutely mentioned in a top 5. It’s really not great, especially from a band as capable as CM. Thanks guys! Would love a part 2 someday!
Thanks for the reminder. Havoc was probably even worse than Nine. I forgot how bad it was. Taking 5 years after the brilliant Isolate, Nine was a failure for me.
A very fun episode indeed. We like what we like, and even great bands make stinkers. Funny thing is, your stinkers aren't nescessarily mine. ;-) Concerning Circus Maximus, I completely agree, Havoc did nothing for me, but I love Nine. Less proggy than the two first albums for sure, a great album nonetheless. The Circus guys do love their 80's metal and their AOR as well as their prog, as seen in their other projects. Perfect blend for me really. :-)
Great show! Subscribing right now. That said, I would rather listen to every album listed here before I ever suffer through Yes - Open Your Eyes ever again.
I just can't get into anything by Dream Theatre or Tool....I find them both a bit grating. And yes it's their vocal styles. I clearly hear nice music....but as soon as they sing my hackles rise, I start growling and I scratch at the door viciously.... 🐕And I do not get why either. I love any music that hits normally....
I feel exactly the same way about Tool. Not a fan of Maynard's vocals. I do like the song Schism mainly for the bassline though. Dream Theatre I've never gotten into either. As a general rule if I don't like the singer I'm probably not gonna like the band.

Haha, you can tell it was late when I sent my list to Peter. It meant .COM, not Radiation!
Catching up on my Sea of Tranquilities-Skimmed through this one again while binging. All I can say is...hilarious episode. Thanks Pete.
Thanks for watching!
This is why SOT is best on the net being able to criticise bands we love.
How can George not like “Epitaph” on In The Court? That’s such a great song.
@Chris Kozak yeah, Moonchild meanders too much, it is the weakest song on the album.
I lump Epitaph and the title track in the same mould mainly because of the haunting mellotron.
Epitaph is one of my all-time favorite tunes!!! A song so good someone used the name for a record company.
Moonchild is the worst song on it but the other tracks are so good it doesn't matter. Epitaph is one of the best songs ever!
Nothing beats the first KC Album. How can anyone involved in Prog don't like that? Very very strange
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers on you, George! Seriously, that was great fun and has lifted my spirits immeasurably. I wish I had seen it live.
Pawn Hearts is one of the great prog albums.
@@finylvinyl66 Pawn Hearts is amongst the definitive progressive rock albums. Amongst the definitive contemporary music albums, actually.
"My father was in World War II. You don't see me making an album." Quote of the year.
Almost like Roger Waters was an artist in a band and Ken isn't. Funny, that... I like when Pink Floyd lyrics are actually about something and not, you know, relatable and profound things such as getting your pilots license.
Ken was on fire in this episode. Nice to see so many people comment that they've rewatched this show numerous times. It's a classic.
I have been watching this channel for long and I have never laughed so much. Great show! Thanks for cheering me up. I needed it!
Thanks for watching Gianni, and for the kind words!
"This guy just should have been in therapy, and he shouldn't have made an album."
"Well that was his f**king therapy."
"Yeah, but why do I have to suffer."
I feel that way about everything Roger Waters ever did. He created his own genre of music... "whine rock".
Yeah, because criticising pro-war sentiments, consumerism and facism is whining. Get real.
Also:
"My father was in WW2, you don't see ME making an album!"
"But your father LIVED!"
"Yeah, and he wouldn't be caught dead listening to this shit."
Easily the best UA-cam video I have seen. Ever! Love the contributions from all, especially messrs Golden, Pardo, Nasser and of course Lamie. Outstanding stuff all.
THIS SHOW IS/WAS EPIC. PART 2 MUST HAPPEN !
The best part of this so far is watching Pete laugh.
love the fact that when Pete is dissing Dream Theater, George's cat is cleaning it's arse!
Asher has no sense of decorum! :D

Every Bloody Emperor is incredible. I was 16 in 1980 when I was handed an old heavy vinyl copy of The Least We Can Do ...my first listen to them . Awesome music . 👍
Saw him two weeks ago in concert. He looks ancient but sings brilliantly still.
By the way Pete, when is the "hated prog albums that you love" show coming?
That's a great idea.
Fuck me, that's meta.
YES! GREAT idea! How about you make this happen, Pete?
Pardon the pun but it’s “The Crime of the Century “ that this album by Supertramp was selected for the above category.
How can anyone not love “ Rudy” as well the rest of this amazing album that has no filler on it .
Most people will remember this album best for “ Dreamer “ and “ Bloody Well Right “.
THat's why it was a Crime for Dreamer and Bloody to have been on the album
Agreed. Discovered CotC and weed together in 1974 and have loved both since.
Love COTC. Other than Dreamer...which is annoying as hell, I love the album. Not a prog album in my eyes though
@@Olliemets If it’s not Prog , then what label would you put on it as it’s most certainly not Pop ?
Thanks, as ever, for your support John. Always enjoy reading your thoughts and you 'got' this episode perfectly.
What a fantastic group of knowledgeable individuals on such a great topic. Thank you gents and SOT🤘😎🤘
Now that is one I have to seek out and get.
Agreed - the remix is so much better than the original. It's still not Dark Side or anything but it's a much better listen.
My list
1) Yes - Heaven and Earth
2) Rush - Test for Echo
3) Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
4) Kansas - Freaks of Nature
5). ELP - In the Hot Seat
Peace and thanks for the laughs.
Thanks for watching, appreciate your observations.

Like Ken, my favourite prog rock band is ELP. To see this band go from what they were to what they became, was not just disappointing, it was tragic, for me anyway.

Thanks for watching Ryan, and that's the truth!
You've completely caught the essence of what we were trying to do with this show there Ryan. Thanks for watching!
Ryan
Hopefully you share a few albums that you all love.
It's always a bummer when your loved ones literally forbid you from listening to some records but when you have a few you all love it more than makes up for it.
For me, "Crisis: What Crisis?" was their dud album.
Thanks Ovidiu, much appreciated, and glad you enjoyed, definitely a fun episode
Thanks Ovidiu! I could def. come up with 5 more.
This has really cheered me up this morning, wonderful stuff.
Great to hear a fellow Scot
Thanks David, so pleased you enjoyed it!
Pete's face as the stinker albums are revealed is amazing 👏
Pete looks scared to ask George what's next. The reactions of the rest of the panel when George picked Crime of the Century are pure gold
I keep rewatching this episode !! its a stone cold classic - needs to have a part 2 !
George was definitely the star of this show. His picks were spot on
Ngl when he picked "In A Silent Way" I had to stop watching for a minute.
He went for the jugular on almost every one, but it's all opinions. Lol
Go team...
George Lamie is a legend.
I'm only up to George's first three picks and I think they are more true to what I assumed the show would be about - i.e. instead of picking obvious stinkers that most everyone considers stinkers, he picked albums that are rated highly.
George killed it last night, no softies
@@ericporter344 No Soft Machine!😀
@@andyshelton4889 George and I both agreed on that!
@@ericporter344 An obscure band you might like is the first album by Gilgamesh.
Cheers All!
Thanks for watching Brian, nice to have some support on the VDGG pick!
The final cut would have to be one of the most divisive albums in history. I love it, I also love ummagumma.
ITCOCK is ok but not brilliant, Red is better.
I love Ummagumma lol, one of my fondly remembered Floyd albums and own it twice on vinyl
The Court Of The Crimson King is not my favorite KC album but it is amazing and was groundbreaking at the time. I remember seeing that cover as a little boy. I just wondered what could be inside. Later I found out. An incredible musical book of stories. Surreal and wonderful.
Thank you guys for this wonderful break from reality. I needed this today.

@@ericporter344 Yeah, I do get that, but Ian Anderson at his worst is still decent.

As for Spock's Beard, I'm all over the map with them. They can sound transcendent, or like 3 different songs having a traffic accident.
I love the first Asia album... the second one is total trash.
I liked their first two. Astra was complete shiite.

Pete himself lists GTR as a 'one album wonder' in one of his videos, so to see him nodding in assent was a bit surprising.
I definitely need to check out more from Max Bacon. When ever I think of who my favorite vocalists are,for some reason or other I always forget about Max.
This is a fantastic video and discussion. It provided much needed laughs! Wow George was really dropping some bombs.
I remember ELP "Works" tour was the first concert (in the Detroit area anyway) to charge DOUBLE DIGITS!!!! ($11!!!)
Never Mind that unlike most groups who bring in local orchestras each stop, ELP brought their own Orchestra/infrastructure.
"it's the Stranglers being covered by the Beach Boys"... awesome show, boys! loved this one.

You say that as it's a bad thing.
Excellent show. Let’s be honest, there is a whole host of shit prog albums out there.

Playing catch-up just watching this episode. Wow it’s so funny and great!
One of the best and funniest videos you've done - thanks! Is the George voodoo doll going to be available in the merch section?
ELP coming off Black Moon in 92, I was expecting Hot Seat to be as good. That didn't happen. It finally came on vinyl last year, and I held my nose and got it, just for the completist in me
They should've called that album In The Hot Shit.

Great to see some NEARfest peeps! Get well soon, Luis!
@@norbiudeako518i actually prefer in a silent way to bitches brew
has an extreme subtlety and by proxy peacefulness lacking in any of miles' other albums
usually he either just goes full throttle with energy or leaves you suspending until he does again for brief periods
he doesn't just usually leave you suspending for a full album though and i greatly appreciate he does do that on in a silent way
even kind of blue has more drive and explicit progression to it than in a silent way does
What a fun and enjoyable episode.
Thanks!

I just can't get into anything by Dream Theatre or Tool....I find them both a bit grating. And yes it's their vocal styles.
