Hi!..What an enjoyable and relaxed interview with my forever friend Rodney Mills. ..I've never heard all of the details and information contained in this well done interview session. ..I was in The Bushmen band with Rodney from 1964-1968 and it was pure joy. ..Sound was always Rodney's "ear candy" and we were fortunate to have him build us the best sound system in the Southeast during the sixties. ..Not only did our group play for teen functions and dances across the Southeast in every imaginable type of venue but we also did concerts with the following: The Rolling Stones,Otis Redding,Roy Orbison,Del Shannon,Paul Revere & The Raiders,Fats Domino,Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels,The Outsiders,B.J. Thomas,The Kingsmen,Billy Joe Royal,Ronny & The Daytonas,Bobby Vinton,Johnny & The Hurricanes,Brian Hyland,The Shangri -Las,Ace Cannon,The Diamonds,Roger Miller,The Newbeats,The Tams,The Box Tops,Bobby Boris Pickett,The Hombres,The American Breed,Tommy Roe, etc. ..It was a fantastic time to be involved with the sixties music scene. ..Happy to say that Rodney and his incredible wife Mary are still our best friends and there's no doubt that they totally enjoy every day here on planet earth to the max. .."Thanks For The Memories"!!..
This Interview and the Jeff Carlisi Interview, were amazing. I have had the Pleasure and Luck to Record with Rodney. He is a super nice guy, so down to earth. Maybe you could Interview Donnie Van Zant, Johnny Van Zant, Don Barnes, Rickey Medlocke. Just suggestions. Love the Show.
Thank you so much for letting your guests talk. I don’t know why other interviewers constantly interrupt their guest. We get so much more information when they have a chance to elaborate. You have great questions and you let them answer. Thank you.
What a great interview. As a huge skynyrd fan I've heard this guys name for years. Good to put a face to the name and hear Mr. Mills story/ history. Man, skynyrd, .38 special, outlaws, ars. This guy was right in the middle of it all.
What a great interview. I recently had the privilege of meeting Rodney and his lovely wife Mary, through a mutual friend. After I sat in at my friend's gig, he introduced and I sat with them for an hour or so listening to some of those stories. Rodney told me to let them know if I ever booked a gig in Jacksonville (my hometown though I don't live there these days). So I immediately went home and booked a gig in Jax for November 8th, and he and his wife have reservations. I am absolutely honored, and thrilled. He is absolutely a legend.
Thank you very much for this interview. A big fan of mr. Miills' work from Greece. A long way from Atlanta but the way he helped all these great artists put down their statements transcended borders. A big thank you!
Thank you for listening MasterBluesRockGuitar! 🎉🔥😇 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe Check out my interviews with Gus G and Stelios Provis, from Planet of Zeus - both of those guys are in Greece :-) Take care man !
Rodney Mills, Wow! Great interview. So many wonderful stories. Thank-you for mixing "Movin Groovin" all those years ago. When you get down to St. Augustine come by my studio, dinner is on me. Marty Fab. Marty's Music
Again thanks for these great interviews, with all the legends we have lost it is so cool to hear from people who were actually there when these great songs were first recorded
Great to finally put a face to the man who's name I read on my favorite albums as a teenage. I wore out .38 Special and Johnny Van Zant as a teenage with a guitar in my hand. Once again this music shaped me as a musician and lead to me having a career as a musician. Amazing music and this man was an Integral part of it all.
Rodney, studio one, ARS, Skynyrd, MARSHALL TUCKER .38 ALL MY FAVORITE BANDS OUTLAWS TOO. WHAT HISTORY. LOVED THIS INTERVIEW. WISH THERE WERE MORRE ARS HISTORY.
Hey Craig I watch the first video with Jeff Carlisi and that was phenomenal blew me away now I am into 56 minutes of your interview with Rodney Mills who is the baddest and I mean that in a good way producers engineers of all time and I am blown away can’t wait to finish watching keep up the good work brother you were interviewing skills and the people you interview are amazing keep them coming bro thank you so much for these interviews
Love your channel, most of what you say technically goes over my head constantly but I love your passion. I’m 67 so no hope for me, but brought up in Liverpool and still have a cavern membership card ( underage when I got it) always loved music of most genres, I’ve not been so excited about a new artist for many years as I have about Ren, independent, no auto tune, most of his videos are one take live, can’t define him by genre, listen to ‘ Hi Ren’ 91/2 minutes in one take, Jenny and Screech 13 minute trilogy, like watching a movie where the story only comes total together in the last line and his rap is like Eminem on steroids, so there is stuff out there, you just have to find it
I have to tell you I’ve only recently discovered you, but your interviews are fantastic! You have such a calm conversational demeanor that makes listening to them easy and a pure joy. I grew up mainly in the 70s and can relate to all of these artist. It is so special to get to hear how the hamburger is made L O L! The behind-the-scenes stuff it’s so special thank you so much. You have a big fan 🙏
Thank you Rodney and Craig for the interview. I very much enjoyed it. I’ve been into music all my life. I was living in Doraville in the mid seventies and was very much familiar with music scene. Especially in the south during that era. I lived not far from studio one and hung out at a local club named CW Shaw’s. The owner Chuck Rinaldo was friends with the ARS gang. The music scene was wide open. So much good music around Atlanta. And what a adventure for Rodney Mills getting to meet and work with all those musical giants
When i heard him say THE METERS, that got my attention instantly-love anything they did-especially with Joseph "zigaboo" Modeliste behind the drum kit-not that dozens of other artists listed are nothing to scoff at, it reads like a top 10/40 hit list from anytime near the last quarter of the 20th century...and keeps going, what a career this man has enjoyed, and think of the happiness of the countless people that listened to all those songs through the years! it is impossible not to like this man.
I met Rodney and the guys in .38 Special when they were recording at Studio One. All were super nice guys. Rodney allowed me into the studio where so many great hits were recorded. I remember playing pinball there with Jeff and Don from 38. I walked in the studio one night and Jeff was in the control room playing the lead to Fantasy Girl. Great memories never to be forgotten. Rodney is just like you see here. He is the most down to earth, nicest guy you will ever meet. Rodneys work is extraordinary! He is a musical genius. Thank you for this interview! *Edit to add, Street Survivors is a Masterpiece!
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar You do great interviews. Not many people can interview someone for 3 hours plus and it never be boring. Every minute was worth listening to. Great questions and stories. Rodney is a very nice, talented guy, you captured him perfectly. Back in the early 80's I detailed cars for Rodney Mills, Buddy and Gloria Buie and a few others in the business. I remember detailing the Cadillac Rodney mentioned. Thanks again and great interview!
What a treasure Rodney Mills is. If you want too see a true musical giant you need to look no further. I cant imagine what the worlds music would have been like without his contributions. His magical ears & hands are on everything. Dang I would love to shake his hand one day.
wow this is just fantastic....ARS sound was fantastic ...and 38 special had a sound like no other .... I'm no angel and Just before the bullets fly are absolutely mixed and produced beautifully... two of my favorite albums of all time .... What a special man ..... and what a great interview ...
I pull out my LesPaul and play along with I'm No Angel. Many times! And when Ridney talked about Dangerous Dan Toler...That man had an ability in the guitar that I wish I had. Greg and others had big time smarts to put him on their recordings! God bless him always.
Hey brother man I just finished watching the Rodney Mills interview you did just blew me away the ending gave me goosebumps an excellent interview my man with a truly talented man I loved it five stars I would love to see you too an interview with Donnie Van Zandt
Rodney was my earliest influences when he was still playing in a local band. It's always I'd great when you meet your hero and they are great people. Rodney is the real deal.
I started playing bass in 1978 and my father and mother at the urging of a knowledgeable cousin bought me my first proper base which was a fender music master. I remember my father saying to me if I see that thing collecting dust I’m gonna kick your butt! after a year he said, can you put that damn thing down L O L! It’s been a constant in my life.
You are lucky to have survived that plane ride because you were in trouble when you passed out because of your heart condition. I did the same thing but I had drove to the hospital and when I walked up to the er window my heart stopped. They said it stopped three times that morning. So they went back in and reopened two stints I had had previously and the next Monday I had 4xbypass surgery that’s been two years ago. Praise the Lord every morning.
Thank you so much for this compelling interview. For me it was one of those things where it was like you are just into it or you're not. Really enjoyed this it just kind of came on my radar after rewatching a Skynyrd doc. For a me there are those handful of songs that thankfully never get old it doesn't matter how many times you listen and "Brandy" is one of those for me. Interesting that I just saw Ozark or finish watching it rather and that song is in it. It made me think of "Dancing in the Moonlight"by King Harvest.
Rodney and I were on the phone one time when they had a studio a few blocks from Colony Square. Can't remember its name At the time, I did not know he was in the Bushmen. As to ARS, I'm the agent that booked them into the Great SE Music Hall. I was a partner with A. Diggs. Sonny Limbo wanted to do an album on one of my groups. Rodney Mills definitely knows how to capture great guitar tone but you've got to give Tom Dowd credit for The Allman Brothers Band " Live At Fillmore East". As with Skynyrd's "One More From The Road", Dowd's ability to capture a bands live sound was unparalleled.

Rodney made the guitars speak, especially with ARS and Skynyrd. Tom Dowd for some reason maybe subconsciously, did not want to do a great job for Skynyrd, the live album aside. Gimme Back My Bullets was flat sounding. Maybe Dowd thought they were not as good as his pride and joy the Allman Brothers? Do not know. Still if you listen ARS’ A Rock’n’Roll Alternative, Skynyrd’s Second Helping and Street Survivors, sonically those guitar tones surpass anything Tom Dowd did with anyone! I LOVE the ABB, Derek and the Dominos Layla, the Cream stuff Dowd did etc. But if you compared these classics with headphones, Rodney’s stuff is better. For proof listen to ARS’ take on the Cream cover “ Outside Woman Blues” on A Rock and Roll Alternative. Barry Bailee’s tone and playing are superb.
