Whoever did the arrangements for the Petula Clark version of "This is My Song" is an absolute genius! The arrangements sound so much like something Chaplin would have supervised; like he did on his own scores.

Paul Merton's guest interview excited me. He looks excited and genuinely gleeful to talk with you. Did you see his "Silent Clowns" episode on Charlie? My family would all enthusiastically watch Paul's "Silent Clowns" episodes.
Trivia: "Monsieur Verdoux" I saw for the first time at the BFI National Film Theatre at Southbank in April 1989.

His knowledge is amazing. Loved talking to him! Thanks for tuning in. What a great experience to see Monsieur Verdoux at the BFI! 🙌

    Just finished this interview.
    Merton certainly knows his Chaplin.
I love that he brought up the “numbers sanctify” speech from MV.
    Thanks again for this, Spencer.

here we are two years after you Spencer had this great conversation with Paul Merton, obviously a huge fan of your grandfather. I am a HUGE FAN as well, so far bought his autobiography and the book about Oona, your grandmother as I was hoping to find out more about their relationship. Anyways both books are really great reads and listening to Paul Merton was super enjoyable. Thanks for having him on your show which I really enjoy by the way. I think both your grandparents were such graceful people in many ways. I`m looking forward to go to the Greatest Museum in september this year. If my knee heals completely. Long long travel from Victoria, Canada. Love you all. and thanks again.

This is a wonderful podcast, and I’ve learned a lot from it. Mr. Merton certainly knows his Chaplin history and has always presented comedy so well, such kindred spirits.

I recently visited Essanay studios in Niles/Fremont, CA. You can find the spot(more or less) along Niles Canyon Road(Highway 84) where Charlie famously walks away from camera in “The Tramp”!

Great. Looking forward to visiting the museum. Speaking of Limelight, this made me think of Claire Bloom, who is still an active actress in the UK to this day incredibly. I guess that was also the final film that Charlie made at his own Chaplin studios. Pleased that his studio lives on as Henson productions. True Hollywood history.

The comments about Birth of a Nation are spot on! At the same time, also hilarious when discussing the use of Wagner's music during the Ku Klux Klan rescue sequence.

Spencer, great to hear you mention The Criterion Collection. I wasn’t aware they were available outside the USA. I have all the major movies of your grandfather releases on CC. CC on CC. Aptly titled.
    The extras are brilliant too.
Merton is bang on about the Beatles comparison. But better. Way better.
    I’m still watching this interview…

Thanks Derek. I love the Beatles comparison! I don’t think the Criterion collection is available here yet but luckily I got my hands on them a while ago. Great quality!

Great interview. I first discovered Charlie as a 12 year old when they ran his features for 8 straight weeks back in 1972. The family sat around every Saturday night to watch , I was hooked. My favorite has always been The Gold Rush .... I am thankful that I can still see periodically the films with live music whether it is a piano player or full orchestra.
