Not sure if you've heard it but Mr KRINKLE is a truly fun one. Primus is most unique ..diff sound than any of seen and love that bassist the musicality is nuts I've actually come to appreciate more of their music. It's fun funky & they rock
For some reason Flea from Red Hot Chile 🌶️ came to mind listening to the bassist
Fish On...any live version. Les has a giant bass solo in the middle that's just sick
Les is the most amazing Bassists/ Lead Singers ever!
You now do fully agree with us Polo, don't you... *_Primus and their fanbase suck!_*
_PFFL... Primus Fan For Life_
Les Claypool brings that carnival barker energy, in the most complimentary way possible. A real showman!
One time I saw them, the opening act was a carnival of freaks sword swallowing, fire dancing, doing magic, ect. Wild show.
The perfect description- carnival barker. That’s so IT!!
Perfect analysis
The Willy Wanka of bass, for sure. An absolute magician.
well said
Fun fact about Les Claypool: He auditioned for Metallica after original Bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus crash. The guys in Metallica told Les he was great, but wasn't what they were looking for. They then suggested he go form his own band. And a short time later Primus was born. Thanks James, Kurt and Lars, y'all did a good thing for music.
Lars isn’t good enough to play with Les Claypool
I believe they said: you're too good for this band
So he found musicians good enough for him. Honestly, Herb and Larry are a whole other level above Lars and James.
They definitely told him he was too good for them. Got it on dvd.
Les & Kirk went to High School together. Les auditioned as a favour.
The thing that gets me about Les Claypool isn't his skill on bass, but the fact that he does it all making it look effortless.
Primus is one of my favorite bands of all time, but they do have a few duds, but they are few and far between. They were inspired by Pink Floyd (and you can see a lot in some of their songs, where they take a PF riff, change one note and turn it dissonant), Rush, The Police, The Allman Brothers, Larry Graham (and you can see some of that in his slap style), Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath
Also that it’s so unique
It never fails to impress me that, the guy plays, what he plays on bass, while he sings simultaneously.. live.
Here's a fun fact that nobody talks about... Primus makes an appearance in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey playing this song live during the battle of bands ✌
In the early 2000s my band was at SIR Studios in LA for a label showcase. At one point our other guitar player passed Les Claypool in the hall. He said, "Hey, Les." Les said, "Potato" and just kept walking.
That's awesome!
@@russellhoyt588 Also on that trip we snuck into Stone Temple Pilots' private rehearsal studio and watched them rock out. Even chatted with a couple of the guys outside later, although Scott just kinda disappeared into an alley...lol.
Anyone else remember how crazy their gigs used to be back in the early 90s, I went to one where we were allowed to skateboard! Been to around 8 Primus gigs since the 2000s and it is like going to an Art gallery, people/youth just stood watching, not even a 'mosh pit'. Oh, Primus always takes me back to how 'Extreme' life was for us teens and young adults in the late 80s and early 90s.
I saw them in 2004 in GP Texas, there was a pit then. That was the Sailing the Seas of Cheese retour. But it was nothing like the shows in the early 90s before Tales From the Punchbowl.
Saw them at the Vatican in Houston, circa 1991. Still a top five club show for me to this day.
I saw them at Lollapalooza '93. Main stage. One of the biggest mosh pits I had ever been in and one of the best memories of my life.
yeah saw them a few times in the 90s, fav was at Berkeley bowl (greek theater), they were filming the video to DMV, we had pits at that show! lol they are so amazing
@@Tateorsomething Must be in the UK, no pits. Glad they are still moshing in the US of A
You still haven't done anything from their first full LP album, "Frizzle Fry"! The entire album is great, but I think some of the stand-outs are "To Defy the Laws of Tradition", "Too Many Puppies", and "John the Fisherman".
to defy the laws of tradition is a must listen
Toys go winding down is gold
@@LordLongShaft...that bass line is sick!!!
Honestly I think the actual song Frizzle Fry is also one of the best from that album. To me, FF and STSOC should be viewed as iconic for a band’s first two albums (not counting Suck On This)
Fisherman & Puppies ftw ❤️🔥
When it comes to band members being exceptional at their craft there's only one word that comes to mind. And that word is RUSH!
They’re touring summer, fall 2024. A momentous occasion indeed.
one thing about Primus, the more the crowd gives, the more they give back
I was at this show.
It was at 2 am after a whole day of shows.
totally surreal - sound was amazing and
the crowd was bananas.
Another fav- Primus playing YYZ while opening for Rush. Classic.
The way he moves, talks, plays. The stories they write. The unbelievable human metronome that is the drummer. And the skill of the guitarist to grind out some of the nastiest sounds. All of it combines into this strange otherworldly sound that you cannot physically prevent yourself from rocking out to. Primus is primal. And we love it.
I saw them opening for Jane's Addiction back when Primus was touring for Seas of Cheese. I knew NOTHING about them. My first reaction was that these guys are BIZARRE... but it didn't take long to realize that they could all REALLY play, and ESPECIALLY the bass player. Gave me chills. I bought their record the next day.
They used to open for U2 back in the early 90's. One of the best 3 member bands along with Rush.
Their live version of “American Life” is really good.
My fav. Primus tune. Especially when they jam it out extended. Insane.
The live version from the Hallucino-genetics DVD is my favorite recorded video version of that song.
@@neilcheeseburger Same
Nature Boy live at Woodstock 94. Deeper cut, and very fun to watch live. Come on Polo. Trust me, you will enjoy it!
Not to mention Claypool’s Jimmy-inspired Star Spangled Banner on bass. Great set.
I'm so glad you had the live experience and yes they are phenomenal live!!! Now you need to experience some older live videos because as good as Les is now in his hay day he commanded the stage with his stomp and you'll love it!!!!
Shocked to hear you have never been to a concert! You also feel the music when your there in person. So you need to pop over the Edinburgh, Scotland and my friends and myself will take you out to a couple of concerts with us! All the best, Stephen.
That slap line is crazy. It also starts off with strumming instead of a slap, which is really unique. He just does it so ridiculously fast it's hard to catch.
Never been to a show? Please go! When the crowd knows every song its like going to church. Its a surreal time. Some of the best live acts ive seen have been: Primus, Tool, Dave Matthews, Elton John, Avatar, Alice Cooper, Streetlight Manifesto, and Devin Townsend.
GO!
Primus is the ultimate show band! Mainly inspired by Rush, by the way. But many others 70s to early 80s bands. I would like to add Mr. Knowitall to your list of songs to check.
You probably would have enjoyed the Tool US tour of 2016 - which they did with Primus as opening act 😀 Pretty descent musicianship there.
I saw them open for Rush in the early 90s. I didn't have a clue who they were. They blew me away. Bought Sailing the Seas of Cheese the next day.
Seen them open for Rush on the “Seas of Cheese” tour. When Rush was touring for “Roll The Bones” I’ve been a concert junkie since 1982 and that was one of the very best ever! Followed a yr later by LaLapaLooza with Dinosaur Jr, Fishbone, Rage Against the Machine, Alice In Chains and Primus, Insane!!!!!
Primus is primus. And no one else is. Love this band.
My first Dead show was in 1984 at Canada's Wonderland north of Toronto. And I was 12yrs old!!! After that I was on my way.I went to America at 15yrs old and followed the Dead. I was taken in by many mothers so to speak. TAKEN CARE OF!!! Not that I needed it but love them all! So many memories... Jethro Tull, Allman Bros. PHISH at 1000 people crowds.HAHAHA still loving it all!!!
To Defy The Laws of Tradition, is a classic 👌 and from their newer stuff, Conspiranoia, is something else 👍
The first time I saw Primus was at the Henry J. Kaiser on 10-20-91 along with Public Enemy. I left at the break between P.E. and headliner Anthrax because the Oakland Hills were on fire, and I couldn't enjoy myself. Got to say 'Hi' to Bill Graham that night one last time as I went in. His helicopter crashed five days later. The last time I saw Primus was at Arco arena in Sacramento opening for Rush in 1992. Probably time to see them again.
the Drummer in that clip is Jay Lane who also did drums for the remaining Grateful Dead band Dead & Company
Real treat to see them live. Every time I’m amazed at their set. As godlike as Les is on bass, their guitarist and drummer hold their own with him.
these guys in 88 89 was great
Now you’re seeing the magic that is bonnaroo. You need to see Tool at Louder than Life.
Primus is touring in 2024. Get in to see them. Saw them a couple of weeks ago performing with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. In real life Les's fingers really do move so fast sometimes that they actually blur. He is either a bass demon or a bass god, can't decide.
I saw Primus love once and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Les Claypool is a force to be reckoned with. Blows rap music out of the water with how talented they are and their stage performance
It was a 10 primus is just one of those bands that come around not very often. You NEED to see them b4 you can't!!! Period
Seen Primus and tool in the same weekend I was fortunate enough to see Primus three times
Worth mentioning: Primus was inspired by Rush, and if you haven't checked out Rush, they're another phenomenal 3-piece band.
Primus and Rush actually played together for the South Park 25th Anniversary Live Concert. Here's a handy link: ua-cam.com/video/eQ3VjAMD5gA/v-deo.htmlsi=u0m6q_o89GkZvwIa
Les looks like he just came off a stream powered aero dirigible after a tour of the ether realms amazing as always
First time I saw Primus was Woodstock 94 and ended up being one of the best performances of the weekend. I must have seen them at least 8 times since then and am extremely excited for the return of Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade next month as they are playing Pink Floyd's Animals album as part of their set.
Diggin on Primus shows you’ve got great musical taste! You understand they’re awkward, unique, and though humorous, are extremely talented. Their heavy, technical, tight, stanky funk grooves are unstoppable. They’re funk-humor, eclectic sound, and Les Claypool’s showmanship are like a punk-rock-infused next generation of George Clinton and Funkadelic.
I saw Primus live many times in their early days in the early 90s at places like Gilman St, Berkeley. glad to see them holding up so freaking well. glad you enjoyed... thanks for doing! I think one Gilman St show also featured Acid Rain, which went on to become Idiot Flesh, then became Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. great but extreme... another acquired taste.
Idiotflesh are god
Gilman and The Omni! Fun times!
One of my best friends is Les Claypool’s brother and I’ve been blessed with seeing him many times. They are absolutely amazing in concert. If you can I would love to see a video of you reacting to “precipitation/50 cal” primus w/ mirv at outsidelands. You will love it! I hope to see you do it!
Don’t forget that Les Claypool was in Green Jello (Jelly).
I saw them at Lollapalooza '93. Main stage. One of the biggest mosh pits I had ever been in and one of the best memories of my life.
I only became aware of Primus a couple of months ago. Holy shit, they are great. If it wasn't for UA-cam suggestions, I would never have known about them.
1. Next Primus suggestion, 'Too Many Puppies' 2. Les Claypool was massively inspired by Rush's, Geddy Lee, another prolific bassist. 3. I just found out, in that little "Fire" clip from Cast Away, Tom Hanks had been coached on how to start a fire without tools and they forced him to actually light that fire himself with the friction technique and his reaction wasn't scripted, Tom Hanks ad-libbed the, "I have made fire" scene.
Primus - Over the Falls,, Southbound Pachyderm, Too Many Puppies,
You should react to the live version of this song from the 1991 Battle of the Bands in San Dimas, CA. Amazing show. Primus came in second actually, but only cuz, incredibly, the show’s lineup also included the first live performance from the legendary Wyld Stallyns.
Lol
Primus is in a whole other world when it comes to talent
I first heard/saw Primus in 1992 when they opened for U2 at Yankee Stadium. They were amazing, and I've followed them ever since.
There was a great article in Bass Player magazine 30 years ago, where Claypool talks about his influences (Beatles, Rush, Pink Floyd, and some more obscure ones like Fred Frith) and his one-of-a-kind rainbow bass. I'm not going to say all of their songs are 10/10, but probably 75% of them are. His side projects have about an equivalent success rate. I've been to a Primus concert, the Hallucinogenetics Tour, as well as I saw Les Claypool Frog Brigade. The Frog Brigade album Live Frogs vol. 2 is a note for note cover of Pink Floyd's Animals.
I agree young man. "Who cares what he is saying. It sounds good. " 👍👍👍
Everyone: "some bands record songs they can't reproduce live"
Primus:"and we took that personally"
i 100% agree with you. this is one of very few songs in my opinion that sounds better than the original recording.
I saw them live once. They were the opening band for Rush on their "Presto" tour back in 1988-89.
Same. In Nürnberg Germany. Best show I’ve ever seen. This would have been ‘91 or ‘92
Primus supported Rush on the Roll The Bones Tour, around 91 - 92
You guys are correct, it was Roll the bones tour. The "Presto" tour opening band was "The Fabulous Thunderbirds".
@@jimrupe9991 I still have the T-shirt.
@@jimrupe9991Mr. Big was the opener when I saw them on the Presto tour. And they were horrible! (Mr. Big, that is)
I am completely floored by the fact that you've never been to a concert before!! I can't imagine NOT regularly going to live shows, but to NEVER have attended even a single show ever is unthinkable!!
Huge Primus fan here. There are songs I don't care for as much, but there is no song I would consider bad. They are a strange band but they are all friggin talented. The best thing about them is they don't appeal to everyone.
Going to see Les on Halloween in Nashville. I highly recommend Those Blu Collar Tweekers from Woodstock 94' YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.....
If Les Claypool and Primus can't put a smile on your face, then your weren't born with a sense of humor and your taste is all in your mouth. Les Claypool is today's Frank Zappa - a musical genius with a wild sense of humor.
Another band that sounds great in the studio but is even better live onstage is Band-Maid. Every musician in this band is amazing: bass player, drummer, vocalists, and guitarists all put on an entertaining show. They also have a goofy sense of humor and are lots of fun to watch. They just played Lollapalooza 2023 and their performance of "Dice - Hate?" is incredibly fun to watch.
Les Claypool has been involved with many projects. Praxis, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bearnie Brains, Oysterhead, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Sausage, Colonel Claypool's Fearless, Flying Frog Brigade, I may have missed something. All of it is as wonderful as Primus
I’m a new sub, just discovered your channel along with primus. Love your articulate reaction, Ora very unique band!!!
Soooooooo glad you appreciate that bass, funk and slap, not too many people get it!
Not sure what was going on in your studio when you shot this, but it (YOU) look AMAZING! Exposure, color, wardrobe, and focal distance are perfect - Try to recreate this for your other vids!
Through the electric grapevine...off tales from the punchbowl...is infectious...wild song...also on the bonnaroo set as i recall.
Best right thumb in the world. Ler, Herb and Les are all genius level musicians.
First time i saw this live was 1992. Not getting any younger over here but this is timeless.
The obscured lyrics are purposeful. You can listen over and over for years enjoying as you start to get it, with constant awesome bursts of understanding over time, like mental pop-rocks.
Primus has been off the charts great live all 10 times I've seen them.
He's just telling a folk tale about cat sex. An amazing song from an amazing band. Definitely my favorite from them.
I love showing people music they haven’t heard before and your reaction videos give me that joy I haven’t really had since the pandemic started
I caught primus live in Pittsburgh few years ago. Mr krinkle is one to check out
I’d suggest Tanita Tikurum Twist in my Sobriety if you like different twists on music that touched mainstream from our demographic as far as age goes but is lost in the cacophony of so much of the soundscape of our peripheral experience. It’s amazing.
Another good listen is Susanne Sundfor The Brothel. Different. Amazing.
It's funny how his lyrics are such a thing but he makes them take the back seat to his delivery. He is an amazing showman.
Les IS the standard of Excellence when it comes to playing Bass! Next level talent. Polo, You have to checkout "Shake Hands with Beef" and Southbound Pachyderm, "Mr. Krinkle", "Wynonas Big Brown Beaver" and "My Name is Mud" too! Les has also hooked up with John Lennon`s (from the Beatles) son and their group is known as The Claypool Lennon Delerium.... absolute FIRE!
The Claypool Lennon Delirium is fire for sure.
You may not know it.. but Primus went on tour with Rush opening for them. Talk about two incredible three man bands !!!
I saw them in concert years ago and they were awesome
Primus’s best of album is called:
“They can’t all be zingers.”
If you go down the Nightwish rabbit hole you won’t be able to climb back out lol. To get started you could pick anything from their Wacken open air concert. They have been one of my favourite bands since the early 2000s. This tour is interesting because the band started the tour with their second lead vocalist, but she left the band mid tour. Floor Jansen (their 3rd lead singer) was asked if she would complete the tour with them, she accepted and learned the whole set list in a few days. She completed the tour and wasn’t technically an official member of the band yet during this performance. The band went from its lowest point and a near breakup to its best lineup of talent and one of the best concert albums I have ever heard.
Came for the Primus, but loved the reaction! Love to see you react to more Primus. How about a slightly different Primus vibe with Southbound Pachyderm.
She came sliding on down the alleyway like butter dripping off a hot biscuit.
Saw them back in 93' at a club in Houston. They rocked then and still rock 30 years later!
Primus has always been known for being a tight and cohesive unit.
I have seen them 7 times. Never disappointed.
POLO does love his bass!
"Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" should be next
Most bands struggle to sound as good as their studio albums live. You can tell how much better musicians they are.
So abstract...just draws you in...its the whole picture not just one thing...i luv that hey
Primus shows are a good time. It's fun trying to find the songs you heard at a concert, the songs will definitely remind you of that show for years
I was blessed. In 91 I got to see not only primus, but they did a colab with butt hole surfers and Jane's Addiction for the final set at Lollapalooza in Jersey. One of the best memories in my life (and I've done/experienced a LOT!)
Mr Claypool is the goat on bass
Thanks for this one! Do yourself a favor and catch one of their shows. Preferably in a quaint setting. They are so tight.
I caught this live!
The first Bonnaroo was my favorite concert experience of all time. Every year after that it slowly declined
Over the electric grapevine, primus . Was performed the same set as this Tommy the cat performance.. fantastic song.
Primus is an acquired taste admittedly. They are my 2nd favorite band behind Tool. There are sooo many good songs especially early Primus that I think you'd enjoy.
Best table top beat of all time........."Year of the Parrot"
I remember seeing them when I was maybe 12 years old during tales from punch bowl tour and they blew my mind. Still mind blowing to this day and I’m 40 now lol
Les Claypool side projects are also awesome : C2B3, Oysterhead, Flying frog brigade, Duo de twang...
Les Claypool looks like a high school science teacher who secretly rocks SUPER hard on the weekend
A great performance. The instruments are played by highly capable musicians.
So stoked to see them with a perfect circle and puscifer next year 🎉
Wow! Amazing!
"Jillies on smack" from bonnaroo, Les on the stand up electric bass
While there are indeed a great many Primus songs to enjoy, "Too Many Puppies" remains my all-time favorite, I play it on my drums most days that I get to play, it's a blast. For more Tool, try watching the video of Danny Carey playing Lateralus.
And, speaking of "not a bad song on the album", anything from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is worthy.
