Been a Primus fan since my middle school days in the early 90s. I’m now in my 40s and whenever I listen to any Primus I’m instantly transported back to 13 years old.
The original band had probably one of the best group of individual musicians of all time. So tight, in sync, and a sight to see and listen to. Truly amazing!!
This is pretty close to the original lineup of Les, Jay Lane on drums, and Todd Huth on guitar. The “classic” lineup is Les, Larry LaLonde on guitar, and Herb Alexander on drums, which is also the current lineup. Jay was in the band the time of this show and that’s him on drums in this video.
Love Primus!!! If you love bass guitar then you’ll love Primus :) Les Claypool is easily in the top 3 bassist of all time! He was the only bassist who auditioned for Metallica that instead of being told he wasn’t quite up to par, he was told he had his own thing going on and was essentially ‘too good’ to be in the band! I’d say that it’s very rare to be told that you’re too good to be in a particular band I think they felt a little threatened (possibly) of being out shined instrumentally on a nightly basis Having said that, his genre is clearly wildly different than that of Metallica’s.
I would say that it wasn't because he was too good, it was because his style of music was too different to what they were hoping to achieve. Either way, we got 2 goo bands out of the whole situation.
@@AnomaTaylor It also might have had something to do with band members being dicks to their bass players after Burton and they kinda realized this guy was too good to be pushed around.
This can help explain the "PRIMUS SUCKS" comments in here. It's actually an endearing term between fans. Their first album was recorded live, and Les Claypool (bass/vocals) had something to say before they left the stage. Got it queued up to the perfect spot (I think) ua-cam.com/video/tomqmHcRxTU/v-deo.html
Les is one the best bass players of all time. His mix of Grove funk rock all wrapped up in his unique style. You really need to do a deep dive into their music
PRIMUS SUCKS! One of my favorite bands from the era. I saw them live 3 or 4 times in the early 90s. Epic performances each time. Original drummer, Tim Alexander (aka Herb), is a force on the drums. As is Les Claypool on bass.
There was a small venue in Tijuana called Iguanas (not sure if it still exists). We went down from San Diego twice to see Primus play there (and once to see Frank Black -also an amazing show). These were some wild shows with (slightly crazed) fans jumping off the 2nd level of seats into the mosh pit). I had a great view of Herb and made eye contact with him several times during both shows. He made funny faces at me. Such an incredible experience.
Believe it or not, they had a drummer before Tim called Curveball. I saw them then in a bar in Berkeley. 4 of us in the bar, including the bartender, and they played like they owned the world. And they did.
Yes they do. Saw them 5 times from 1993 to 1999. Last time I saw them was at the H.O.B. in Vegas with System Of A Down opening, who really did suck compared to Primus. Buckethead actually opened that show. It was pretty insane. They were at their best though with Tim "Herb" Alexander.
They don't expect to be taken seriously, but most of their songs actually have extremely deep meanings buried under the humor, Too Many Puppies is a good example.

I love Primus. The bass player, Les Claypool, lives near me in Sonoma, California. If you are ever in the area wine tasting, you have to check out his Purple Pachyderm wine at Claypool Cellars. Watching Primus live is always an amazing treat.
I threw Primus in my top 5 favorite bands many years ago. I was lucky enough to see them live in my town o Tonawanda NY, for free This band is beyond it's time and definitely rules over most.
When Les was asked about freestyle jamming with Geddy he replied "There were times I just couldn't keep up". I discovered Primus shortly after getting my first Bass in 1991 at the age of 16.
Seattle here. Huge Primus fan. Or "Primus Sucks" if you're in the know. Seen them live several times in and around the Seattle area in the '90s. They always put on a hell of a show and make a lot of very coordinated noise for a 3-piece band. Thanks for the fun!
My first year of high school when South Park first came on the air in Australia was my introduction to Primus, went and bought CD the next day. Been a fan ever since
All time big fan, 1993 you could call the radio station request a song I called & asked for Jerry was a race car driver off the Album Sailing the Seas of cheese it was awesome !
One of the greatest bands of ALL TIME… The musicianship is amazing. I’ve seen them numerous times, since the 80’s and my jaw still hangs open. I love me some Primus!
Such a great, super funky song. The guitarist reminds my of Zappa...just crazy licks. The drummer is killing it and Les Claypool's slap chords are outstanding. His vocals are a hoot. What a classic and their fans eat it up. Primus is truly a unique band. Thanks Colby!
First heard them in 90'....Didnt know them the first show at the Back Room, then went to the Rush, specifically because Primus opened for them. Shortly after, I airbrushed Skeeter playing airbass on the trunk of my 73' Camero.
Big Primus fan from Montreal here! You should react to more, because they have two different drummers, one very busy (that one obviously) and one super minimalist.
I graduated HS in '86, and I'd already seen Primus 3 times. The first two times because they were one of the opening acts. The third time, I bought tickets to see them. Been a fan ever since. Their first 3 albums are my favorites.
