Les Claypool really is a genius which means hes crazy. Thats where you balance out. Just depends where your crazy is. His is everything but we love him for it so it works!!!
Watching Les Claypool play live makes me realize that I’m not a good bassist...Primus is a wonderful example of what happens when you have an amazing jazz drummer, great death metal guitar player and...whatever kind of alien Claypool is and, put them in a band. With the exception of Victor Wooten (maybe), Les Claypool is the best bass player I’ve ever seen play.
Seen them both live too. Unreal, both of ‘em. As my bass mentor once told me, Les is the bassist that makes you do one of two things. Either you just up and quit or you push and practice more and more. Vic also falls into this category.
Agreed, but you might want to give James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius and Jeff Berlin a listen. Cuz once get into that style of bass in it's natural habitat there ain't any coming back.
Seeing them live is quite an event to witness. It's funny their all so incredibly good musicians that they can literally cover whatever material and it immediately becomes something of value and possible meaning just because of the level of musicianship. People have a very hard time explaining Primus and definitely have difficulty when introducing them to others. I mean what can you say, especially if someone's not a musician to try and convey what is happening and the value. It's something you either get or you don't. Kudos to those non musicians that love them. Such a structuring of a band, it would be such a loss if they weren't structured the way they are where the infallible bass and the drums that are forever interwoven with perfection. Crazy to have a band with the guitarist being the weakest link, but somehow his style is the only kind that could ever work with it. Well, besides when Buckethead accompanies then brains explode.
Tom Waits sings the gritty sounding vocals on the recording but Les sings this live. Its nuts watching him play that bass line and sing at the same time. The drummer Tim Alexander was a huge early influence on my playing. I believe part of his sound was that he used slightly smaller kick drums (20") than the norm so he got a punchier sound. As others have suggested for more Primus, "Too Many Puppies", "Mr. Krinkle", "My Name is Mud" and a favorite of mine, "Southbound Pachyderm". A song with a pretty cool opening groove is "Year of the Parrot". A song with some cool textures is "Over the Electric Grapevine". Les Claypool was one of the first bass players I had seen playing a 6 string fretless and "Over the Electric Grapevine" has some cool sliding using the fretless. (he also has a 4 string with a whammy bar!) Oh......and one more thing.... PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!
Did a deep dive on Google. LOL there are SO MANY different drumkits Tim's used throughout his career. I know (via Modern Drummer) that at least for 'Tales from the Punchbowl', he was using a 22x20 (right) & a 20x18 (left), as well as two other kicks (can't remember exactly, but I know one of the auxiliaries was a 24"). But there is at least one photo on Google Images that shows him playing a kit with what looks like twin 20s, and that's being generous on the diameter...
@@BPhillips2000 I think around the Sailing the Seas of Cheese time, he was using the Pork Pie kit with the 20" kicks. By the time they recorded Tales from the Punchbowl, I think he had his Tama endorsement and had the different sized kicks. When I was 13 my sister's boyfriend showed me and my dad Primus. My dad fell in love with primus. He was blown away. He still loves them at the age of 68.
I hope you two can catch them live someday, it really is an experience, SHe wasnt much of a fan before, but by the end of the set she was jumping around! it was a blast.
my son tried to get me to listen to them in the 90's. I guess my brain wasnt ready at the time. 3 years ago, At the age of 60, I had one of my son's friend send me the Video, Tommy The Cat, and I was mesmerized!! I was thinking "what the hell is this" while loving it and bobbing my head at the same time...Now I know why my son played it WIDE open on his car stereo and had his head bouncing. The last time I listened to Primus a couple of months ago, In my house, on youtube, my friends and I were up and dancing! FELT GOOD.
Awesome point. If you played the intro to "Fish On" to 100 people that never heard it before, and asked them what the song was about, I'm sure the majority would say something about sea captains or lobster boats or Moby Dick. So when the song is, indeed, about a fishing trip and landing a huge sturgeon, it's like a reward. And you can just read the lyrics to Mrs. Blaileen, My Name Is Mud, Sgt. Baker and so many more and realize Les is a great storyteller by any definition.
That is probably the single greatest thing that created my live for Iron Maiden back in '84. How often I would listen to a song, pull out the lyrics & wonder what he was writing about only to find out it's a historical poem, a piece of history, or from some book called Dune. So much of my self-driven education as a young kid was looking into the source of Iron Maiden lyrics whether it was mythology, history, poetry or science fiction. Their music truly shaped the man I am today.

Bogus Journey, actually. That was my introduction to Primus. I listened to that soundtrack so much the summer it came out while mowing lawns that I wore the tape out.
I definitely do. My friend and I were in the audience. They filmed the Battle of the Bands sequence in the little theater at Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA (about an hour from where we lived at the time) and we'd heard a radio ad calling for people to come down to be extras. So, being fans of both Primus and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, we of course jumped in the car and went. Turned out to be two straight days of filming and several of the bands - including Primus - played short sets (30-ish minutes, iirc) for the audience on both days. PLUS we got to see lots of George Carlin. And William Sadler (Death) did some comedy and impressions to keep everybody hyped while lighting and cameras were being moved for various setups. It was a good time. We were paid in KFC. At the part where the Princesses are hanging from the ceiling, they had the crowd do a bunch of "horrified" reaction shots. My friend and I decided to jump to our feet and point so we could pick ourselves out of the crowd when we eventually saw the film. Sadly, we didn't see ourselves when we watched it in the movie theater but, when the movie came out on DVD, he paused and found that you can see us jump up in literally one frame before the cut. Anyway, super fun experience. And a small portion of the crowd (including us, obvs) confused the majority of the audience by sporadically yelling, "Primus sucks!" in between their songs. People thought we were being very, very rude, lol.
Saw Primus open for Public Enemy and Anthrax in 1991ish in an old abandoned grocery store in Houston. Was an incredible mix of music loving humanity. Jerry was a Race Car Driver. Les is a beast.

Most reactions are from people that don't even understand basic music and makes me worry for the future. Thanks Key of Geebz.

I’ll recommend another Primus track got you to do on the channel: “Jerry Was A Racecar Driver” It was the song that made me really get into the band. Massively fun to listen to, and really showcases each of their talents!
Yes Primus! Les Claypool is an insane bassist! Saw them here in Honolulu back in '96 I think, crazy pit on the floor. Some others I'd recommend to listen to "Jerry was a race car driver" off this same album, "Professor Nutbutter's house of treats", "Too many puppies". Seriously, they have so many good songs.
I love Primus! You're the only "reacting to x music" channel that I like to watch, because not only are you very educational to watch but you also seem to be really into what you're listening to. I'm learning quite a lot :)
Best breakdown of 'Tommy the Cat' I've ever heard (Subbed). Though I don't have your music knowledge or vocabulary ( just an old 60's & 70's rock/funk drummer. Flam paradiddle guy myself ;-) ) I had the same reaction to this song ... blown away. It's in regular rotation in my iTunes library song list called, "The Ride". It's nothing but 'hi-energy' songs for when I'm getting wind-therapy on my trike. Rock on ... 🤘 ^v^
Primus songs to check out , Lacquer Head Jerry was a Race Car Driver Winona's Big Brown Beaver Shake Hands with Beef Mr. Krinkle Mr. Knowitall My Name is Mud
So happy to see you having fun with this song! Another fun song by Primus is "Over the Electric Grapevine". A slower, journey-ful song worthy of your trusty analysis is "Southbound Pachyderm". The Beatles had "The White Album", Metallica had "The Black Album", and Primus had "The Brown Album". I'm constantly amazed that only three guys are pulling off these songs. Classic!
If it wasn’t mentioned in the 1.8K comments below...Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver is a must reaction. Loved this! Saw Primus for the first time when they opened for Rush in 1992. My favorite two bass players in one concert...Les and Geddy set the bar high. Thanks for the reaction!!
Primus Sucks!! (that's actually their official slogan, believe it or not) I fell in love with them and Claypool's bass playing when I was in highschool and picked up the bass guitar myself. The first song (and next Primus song I would highly suggest you listen to) I ever heard was Jerry Was a Race Care Driver, off the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game. His slap, pop, and tapping style is just so unique. It's hard find such bass driven music like this, outside of maybe Rush (who are one of Les Claypool's biggest influences). And of course, I have to give my obligatory recommendation to listen to Symphony X - The Odyssey. You'll love it!!
Yeah, I remember when that really got started. Since the internet wasn't a thing yet, it was only the hardcore fans that knew what the chant was about, and why it was so amusing. You could always tell who didn't really know them by how they reacted in shock when people started yelling "PRIMUS SUCKS" at the top of their lungs at the band. One of the funniest things I saw from them was at a concert a the Berkeley Bowl. Some previous shows they'd had people throwing a bunch of crap up on stage, so at the start of the show, Les gets up to the mic and announces "OK, and please, no one throw anything up here on stage unless it looks like a bag of marijuana." *LOL*.
This is awesome. This song is a part of my soundtrack of life. Primus appeared in the movie Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey playing this song, and it was part of the official soundtrack. I wore out that tape when I was a kid. Totally obsessed with it. It also had Megadeth, Faith No More, Kiss, it was amazing for 10 year old me. Good times. So thank you for this.
I love how you can recognize when a musician hears something that catches their ear. Every time there's a cool lick your face lights up and it brings me joy cuz I do the same thing.
My intro to Primus was my mate played me John the Fisherman back in 91. First track off of their first album. Needless to say I was hooked immediately, and wouldn't let him stop the cd until I'd heard the rest of the album. Lifelong fan ever since.
Love Primus, they're all basically musical geniuses just fucking around and jamming and come up with amazing music. Plus they are their own genre too according to the ID3 tags. 😆
that is victor wooten's double thump technique you were trying to remember. when you thumb a note down, hit it again on the upstroke, and right back down - see the flecktone's classical thump for a direct tutorial. as for primus - step into John the Fisherman next. then too many puppies. then southbound pachyderm. then jerry was a race car drive.
It's really wonderful to hear a professional talk about what makes a great track and great performance in detail. I recommend watching the Bonnaroo 2011 Festival videos of Primus, they are absolutely amazing.
Yo that face right after the guitar solo and claypool plays his little ditty ! I came from the raidohead bus on your channel and jumped right into another fave right here !!!
I feel like from how you were talking about this, that it might be news to you that Les Claypool is the vocalist on this song. The most interesting thing about this is that when they play live, Les seamlessly does the vocals and bass playing live. It is amazing!
My favorite Primus song is Frizzle Fry. Then probably Jerry Was a Race Car Driver. But Frizzle Fry is so darn tasty. Would love to see a reaction to it!
Primus is like if Frank Zappa got a time traveling airstream trailer up to 88mph, arrived in the past, then made sweet love to Arnold Schoenberg just to conceive an immortal claymation alien that subsists on slap bass and pork soda
Brown Album, also by primus, very interesting engineering. All analog, very retro. Btw I'm at 7:00 and I don't think he knows that Les is the bass player AND the singer. Watching him play live is a thing.
Les claypool is "double thumping" on a fretless Bass masterfully on this track. What makes it even more impressive is he's doing the vocals while playing that complicated baseline! Les Claypool's father was a travelling storyteller as a profession. You can tell the apple.doesnt fall far from the tree by the way Les writes songs, they always tell a story.
I love your videos man! Buddies always talking about Primus, but never gave them a shot. Your videos are so out of the box on what you get me thinking about other than lyrics. Very cool! Keep it up!
I've heard this song, and many others from Primus, untold times over 30 years and I still hear 'new' things that I hadn't noticed in the previous hundreds of listens.
The fact that Les can spout these lyrics live while playing that bass the way he does and never miss a beat is supernatural.

I’ll recommend another Primus track got you to do on the channel: “Jerry Was A Racecar Driver”
It was the song that made me really get into the band. Massively fun to listen to, and really showcases each of their talents!
First Primus song I ever heard because it was on the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game
Southbound Pachyderm, John the Fisherman both great tracks
second southbound pachyderm.
@@fergarising1972 third Southbound Pachyderm. I'll always advocate for the elephant.
John the fisherman is my all time fav. Primes song.
John!
Southbound Pachyderm!!
Professor Nutbutter’s House of Treats was my son’s favorite when he was like 1 through 4 years old. I have videos of him dancing to it 😂
The toys go winding down
My friend Fats
The ol diamondback sturgeon pt3
The entire frizzle album
The list goes on and on
One of the most fun bands to see live EVER!
Really enjoying vicariously watching you experience this for the first time.
yes! please dive deeper into primus! they are AMAZING.
Primus - “is it Luck” - the drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander shows his true potential. You’ll know when you hear it.
"I'm so definetely going to dive more into Primus" 😂😂 that's amazing sir
I like the story when he tried out for Metallica , they said dude you have your own thing going on they said he was too good lol
He apparently cried about that, but could you imagine what Metallica would have sounded like? James's fingers would be twisted
@@deifyingpariahs lol I know right 🤣
Imagine the task for LARS, trying to play off Les 😱🥺
@@ShawnH529 can Lars play off of Lars yet?
I remember discovering this in junior high! I still introduce people to it!
the whole group are amazing musicians...we focus on the frontman, but Tim and Larry are breathtaking too!
"Jilly's On Smack" is a humorous masterpiece. Les on the electric upright bass/cello is genius.
yea i think he would dig jillys on smack. its got some unique production qualities he might nerd out on.
There's a live version from Bonnaroo that is 🔥
Don’t forget Mr. Krinkle!!!!
So glad you did Primus. They are so much fun and Les is f%$@ing incredible!
Awesome! Primus is a treasure trove of weird gems
I love watchin other people listen to Primus.
"what the hell is this?"
"oh...wait." *smile*
*V I B E*
Having been a massive Primus fan since the mid 90s I LOVE hearing you speak about them and their sound.
I love Primus! You're the only "reacting to x music" channel that I like to watch, because not only are you very educational to watch but you also seem to be really into what you're listening to. I'm learning quite a lot :)
"I've never heard any of their music."
Dude, once you hear Primus, you can never unhear them. And that's a GOOD thing!
Primus is beyond Peppers. Les and Larry rule while Tim just always brings it!
Rock on ... 🤘 ^v^
We just reacted to this on our channel. Happy to see you discover Primus! Keep up the amazing insight! 👏
Fellow old man here. I too am learning all these new bands from your journey !
Great video! By the way, that was Tom Waits voice as Tommy the cat.
Where to start with shoegaze: My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow, Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station, Swervedriver - Duel
This is a great start for introducing yourself to Shoegaze. Listen to this man.
I'd throw in Dreams Burn Down and Leave them all Behind by Ride.
I'd say the whole Loveless album from MBV
Every single time I'm off a shit ton of caffeine, this song plays through my head over and over again. Take that how you will
Pretty much the same reaction I had the first time I heard them. An amazing trio of musicians. Got to see them live on the Punchbowl tour. Good times!
Primus songs to check out ,
Lacquer Head
Jerry was a Race Car Driver
Winona's Big Brown Beaver
Shake Hands with Beef
Mr. Krinkle
Mr. Knowitall
My Name is Mud
If he's got drummer roots, can't forget about John the Fisherman. I used to listen to that whole song just for that one fill.
Nice list but add DMV and Sgt Baker to it
I would recommend Bob as well
Professor Nutbutter is epic, one of their best songs
Hamburger Train
So happy to see you having fun with this song! Another fun song by Primus is "Over the Electric Grapevine". A slower, journey-ful song worthy of your trusty analysis is "Southbound Pachyderm".
The Beatles had "The White Album", Metallica had "The Black Album", and Primus had "The Brown Album". I'm constantly amazed that only three guys are pulling off these songs. Classic!
Gotta listen to Primus Jerry was a race car driver or actually the entire Sailing the Seas of Cheese album
Funfact: the deeper voice in this Song is Tom Waits
Weird coincidence because I just started getting into Primus and Tom Waits
@@CoolDude-of7cd les claypool also played bass on some of waits' albums 🙂
Ugh. Everyone knows that already.
@@moo3992 cool dude420 didnt 🙂
@@waisinet oh well.
Primus Sucks!! (that's actually their official slogan, believe it or not)
I fell in love with them and Claypool's bass playing when I was in highschool and picked up the bass guitar myself.
Les has their mosquito logo tattooed on his head. 😆
@@kevsim70 Their first website in the late 90s was www. primussucks .com. I'm sad they changed it.
Primus was robbed!! Still can’t believe they lost the battle of the bands to a makeup-less Kiss song😡
So happy you've discovered Primus. They and Radiohead are two of my favorite bands, you're in for a treat diving into both of them.
Good god how have you lived this long without hearing Primus.
I love how you can recognize when a musician hears something that catches their ear. Every time there's a cool lick your face lights up and it brings me joy cuz I do the same thing.
Just wanted to make sure everyone is A-OK, stay hydrated, eat your veggies and keep your body happy.
I think if you want more of Tim "Herb" Alexander, you gotta hear My Friend Fats or Eleven. Both great songs for Herb.
“My Name Is Mud” and “Jerry Was A Racecar Driver” are two awesome displays of Les Claypool’s ability. Check one of those out next.
My intro to Primus was my mate played me John the Fisherman back in 91. First track off of their first album. Needless to say I was hooked immediately, and wouldn't let him stop the cd until I'd heard the rest of the album. Lifelong fan ever since.
Great stuff!! I wouldn't have ever listened to Primus if not for enjoying your channel! I'll definitely buy you a coffee!
"Oh I'm definitely going to dive into some more Primus." Famous last words. Welcome to the swamp.
Saw Wooten live and was going to mention it. Also, solid line of suggestions.
Tosin Abasi is also a master of double thumping. Never was able to get my thumb to bend back quite right to make it work myself
PRIMUS have influenced me I so many ways on my journey. So many great little details and great production. Oh yessss!
Love sailing the seas of cheese. I asked for this album for my 10th birthday. My mom was the shit for not denying me my wish.
Primus is one of the weirdest bands out there and they're f-ing awesome😀
Primus or Mr Bungle....both equally impressive musicians too
Primus sucks!
"To defy the laws of tradition" is another amazing song to check out from them. The guitar work on this band is disgustingly underrated too...
fun listening.
they also did the theme to South Park!
I had a random dude here in Portland, Maine yell “LES CLAYPOOL” 6 times in my face in a sub shop.
Primus sucks!!!!!😎😎
They did a great cover of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" with a cool animated video too.
GAH! How did I forget about that?!?!
Oh dude that video. When the demons came out of the ground... had me messed up. Love it
OMFG IT FINALLY HAPPENED. After Mr. Bungle someone said he was ready for this. They weren't wrong lol.
Primus. Your reactions are PRICELESS!
One of my favorite bands, looking forward to more reactions on their music.
I feel like from how you were talking about this, that it might be news to you that Les Claypool is the vocalist on this song. The most interesting thing about this is that when they play live, Les seamlessly does the vocals and bass playing live. It is amazing!
Primus travels. They have tunes all over the spectrum of strange funk, alternative, avant-garde, comedy. Love that band.
Primus is so fricking fun! "Jerry was a racecar driver" and "my name is mud" are my fav's besides this one.
Something so organic about this production. Lots of texture even in the bass drum!
Watching you react to this song just made me full on grin ear-to-ear.
My favorite Primus song is Frizzle Fry. Then probably Jerry Was a Race Car Driver. But Frizzle Fry is so darn tasty. Would love to see a reaction to it!
Fish On.... Blue Collar Tweaker anthem😎
yes
Primus is like if Frank Zappa got a time traveling airstream trailer up to 88mph, arrived in the past, then made sweet love to Arnold Schoenberg just to conceive an immortal claymation alien that subsists on slap bass and pork soda
Hate Schoenberg but really good analogy
Now and then a good fishing trip trip
Hard to fathom that they're only a 3 piece, and he does things with a bass that only he can do while skibbity bopping the lyrics.
never heard anyone describe it better
Well done sir.
You win.
Southbound Pachyderm is one of my favorites from Primus.
Its my favorite, because its a rare song that actually takes me somewhere away from my world.
@@hoosierbbq Have you seen the live video for the song from the Hallucino-genetics tour? If not, you should.
@@kevsim70 I saw the Claypool Lennon Delirium which was awesome.
Those damn blue collar tweakers at Woodstock 94(long version). Awesome bass solo. What made me take up the bass.
My favorite track, To defy the Laws of Traditions, pretty much sums up Primus and the way they utilize their instruments.
Some Primus suggestions: "American Life", "My Name is Mud", "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver", "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver"
Yesssssss!!!!! All my fave Primus tunes!!!!!! ❤
Over the Falls and Shake Hands With Beef!!!
Southbound Pachyderm!
You are totally right. It's unbelievable that he can play and sing that stuff together.
Gg
I love your videos man! Buddies always talking about Primus, but never gave them a shot. Your videos are so out of the box on what you get me thinking about other than lyrics. Very cool! Keep it up!
I've heard this song, and many others from Primus, untold times over 30 years and I still hear 'new' things that I hadn't noticed in the previous hundreds of listens.
