Ain’t that the dang truth! Music like this always brings a smile! Even in college in the early 90’s, we would go listen to old 80’s night every Sunday. Was it me or was it actually fun hanging out overnight to get a new album or concert tickets? Simpler times.
Born Feb 18, 1980. I was a teen in the 90s, the height of grunge, I still listened to the 80s. It will be remembered as a pinnacle of artistry in music. It was the culmination of the late 60s, feeding the early 70s, the labels got so over the top, they went disco, which was a very short lived genre. Going into the 80d they realized dance music was a hit, but synthesizers were the answer . Usher in the greatest decade of music. Then grunge killed the record industry.

I've been looking for this song for over 25 years. Alast, my search has ended and finally this 25 year old earworm can go to rest. I just heard it on the radio one day back in the early 90's as a teenager while travelling in a car way before internet and cell phones were a thing and never heard it again. I could remember it perfectly, exactly where I was, the time of day, the street I was on as if it were yesterday. Sadly all I remembered about the song was a 5 second bagpipe rift which I'm now understanding wasn't bagpipes at all. Just that 5 second rift haunted me every day since. For years I searched and searched for 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's songs with bagpipes to no avail until eventually I forget about it. Recently I started getting back to some classic 80's tracks and just happened to come across it just now. Like a long lost dog that came home or that last piece of puzzle you never found. Now I feel complete. I'll never forget this feeling.
Im Irish and i think this song should be the national anthem of Scotland. There is something profoundly Scottish about it, even the lyrics. RIP Stewart Adamson and may God Bless you and bless you.

I've been debating with myself for years whether I could actually pick my most favorite song, particularly from the 80s era. If I had to, I'm pretty sure this one might be it.
I was going thru serious alcoholism while living in Thailand when I read the article about his final days and death. At that moment many lines of this song suddenly had a new meaning for me. Something happened and even though it was a nightmare I gave up drinking 100% soon after. "Stay alive."
Hope it's going good for you, everyone has a breakthrough moment, I hope it has worked out for you, remember in the hardest of times the best times follow 🙏
Great track,my favourite of theirs ahead of 400 Miles (Fields of Fire). I always have to turn the volume up as loud as possible when playing it,shake the neighbours' foundations and be damned.
Agreed! We didn't have the choices that the newer generations have nowadays for ways to spend their downtime. Music was everything to us! It was our main outlet for expressing our individual personalities.
I was 13 years old the first time that this song, caused a chill that ran all the way up me. I am 51 years old, and I still feel the hair on my neck rise. Makes me want to get up, run thru a wall, a bottle of courage in a song. Music that fires the soul does that. RIP Adamson.
Nicki Reynolds A real shame he was one in a million. Hawaii is such a great place , but with Stuart checking out there it's changed now . Absent Friends.
Nicki Reynolds .......actually, Stuart *hated* folks saying that but it’s hard not to hear it, he was a fabulous guitarist nonetheless. RIP Stuart Adamson.
This was back in the 80s when Scotland took over the world with Big Country, Simple Minds, Cocteau Twins, Proclaimers just to name a few. Good ol days lads
Toast and Marmalade I didn’t know he hanged himself; I know Stuart was found dead in that hotel room after going missing for a month; not even contacting his wife and family but had no idea about c.o.d... RIP Stuart Adamson 🖤
It is now 42 years ago , I met my English husband while travelling Tunisia . Moved to UK and being married since . This song will always remind of those early time together .
If they had shot the video at Mountain Warfare Training Center, Staff Sgt. Frankenberger would have been standing at the bottom putting a stunned Adamson in his place--Frankenberger would have went upside his head for that sorry display of stealth and speed like he did mine @ Bridgeport.
“I’m not expecting to grow flowers in the dessert, but I can live and breathe and see the sun in winter time.” - kinda sums up how I feel about America. If you don’t feel this way, turn off the news and reconnect with nature and those around you then see how you feel.
I saw Big Country at Dingwalls in the early 1980s. After they had finished playing Stuart came up to the bar and bought me and my friend a drink. Such a nice bloke. Never forget that
Big Country, U2, The Call, Tears For Fears, & The Alarm were all toying around with the bagpipe drone guitar sound back in the day -- Big Country really perfected it on this track though
Bullshit...only big country wanted a bagpipe guitar sound as it suited their Scottish culture and the ethos of a sound of the big open Scottish landscape...u2 only used a real bagpipe in the song "Tomorrow" and they weren't even the ultraload mouth blown marching band pipes...but native Irish elbow bag powered uilean pipes used for traditional Irish cielle sessions and standard pub and stage venue performances
Just to clarify that all those other bands weren't Scottish bands or Irish Gaelic inspired bands...U2 are more an international everyman's band than an Irish nationalistic band...bono is against nationalism anyway....the alarm were Welsh..they don't do bagpipes in Wales and the other bands you mention are all English....
@@Maguirearch thank you for the clarification -- but i was referring more to the experimentation with the sound than to these band's heritages, & wasn't trying to delve that deeply into the origins as much as simply into the use of the sound. Obviously, Scottish or Irish bands would be more prone to use a bagpipe sounding guitar or keyboard drone, but non-Scottish & non-Gaelic bands & groups have used actual bagpipes or bagpipe-like sounds in their music
I'm 35 and just discovered this through a XTC playlist - absolutely incredible. I love the "bagpipey" guitar work. The melody of this could've been written yesterday, that's how fresh it is.
there are no bagpipes..its guitar effects...not too difficult to do with the right effects pedals!...sounds like the pipes...sounds good to a scotsman!!!!!!!!

"What have I done to deserve this" by Pet Shop Boys. Talking Heads, Ice House, Billy Idol, Simple Minds"alive and kicking"
@@suzi-c I just love Scottish bands, one of my favourites Big Country and the Skids, best wishes from Wales.
Voices of Babylon the outfield, Der kommisar after the fire, shooting shark Blue oyster cult. Many more I can name?
Missing the 80s sitting here in quarantine and uncertainty.
i'm here too
We survived the 80's baby.... Coronavirus ain't Shit... 🤘🇺🇸🤘
@@mikebressler8951 The 80s were the best times! Cold War over, great music, no pandemics...
@@techboysf I agree... ✌
We’ll make it through this together with this great music!
Keep fighting dude. 4 years sober myself. Not looking back just forward!
8 yrs 1/20/24 sober....life is Good.
Then this song did what he intended it to do. Glad you're still here. :)
I’m an American with Scottish roots
One of the BEST songs of the 80s......EASILY.
Great track,my favourite of theirs ahead of 400 Miles (Fields of Fire). I always have to turn the volume up as loud as possible when playing it,shake the neighbours' foundations and be damned.
Quite underated too
There had to be someone out there disappointed to see that snorkeling wouldn't be part of the show.
Close , bro . Real close .
songs today are much different from the 80s songs
Coming from someone who was born in 1999. We really do wish we got to experience the 70s and 80s!
My teenage years were late 70s early 80s so glad I grew up in those times would go back in a instant if I had the chance.
@wessexblue me too
big country should have been MUCH bigger than they were.
teenagers today missed out on the greatest era of music. New Wave or Heavy Metal, they missed it. Wish we could go back when things were simple
I wish I could tell Stuart how much him and the rest of Big Country helped me. They saved my life and got me through one of my toughest times.
What times???
One to say you're welcome by hanging himself...

We had the best music in the 80’s! What a wonderful time to have grown up in!!

This scottish band are singing about a small country scotland but in scottish minds its a big country
'70s and '80"s!
Take me back

This reminds of my late brother who died a in hiking accident. Life always ends, mourning never does.

One of the greatest songs ever created in humanity’s existence.
big call there.....but I like it ;)
Yeap
Don't forget the video is awesome too

Thought that was Porrohman 👍
Just seeing a 3 wheeler makes my neck hurt lol
Dear reader: You can’t stay here with every single hope you had shattered.
Stay alive! ❤️
Still trying to come to terms with that line myself.
This song is like a bottle of wine. It gets better with age!!
Nah... It was jammin' then and kept its rhythmic tempo, but I get it if some folks believe there is something above 100%
I’ll take “80s videos that make no sense, but are still awesome” for $1000 Alex. 😆. This was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day.
Well said!!!❤😊
How does this not make sense? Perhaps a Tool video would change your mind.
@@ellzedd4113 well Tool isn’t 80s, but yeah. Their videos make no sense either.
Have no idea how this song got me through my😊
I just sympathize with anyone who didn’t grow up hearing the music of the 80’s and 90’s. There’s an energy throughout that is unparalleled.
80's correct----90's not so much--imo
@@chriswirth9484 The early 90’s maybe.
I was very confused in the 80's. I didn't know what Pronounds to use/S
Agreed! We didn't have the choices that the newer generations have nowadays for ways to spend their downtime. Music was everything to us! It was our main outlet for expressing our individual personalities.
I grew up with 60s, 70's, 80's & 90's & early 2,000's too, How lucky am I! I feel sorry for kids these days...
I was 13 years old the first time that this song, caused a chill that ran all the way up me. I am 51 years old, and I still feel the hair on my neck rise. Makes me want to get up, run thru a wall, a bottle of courage in a song. Music that fires the soul does that. RIP Adamson.

Bro spot on! Same here!
Love how the guitars sound like a cooler version of bagpipes...one of my all time favourite songs and so sad about Stuart Adamson....RIP mate :(
Nicki Reynolds
A real shame he was one in a million. Hawaii is such a great place , but with Stuart checking out there it's changed now . Absent Friends.
he was a depressive.. shame help wasnt at hand.. or if it was it didnt help.. preferred him in the skids though.
Great comment.thanks for the insights on the bagpipe sound.
Nicki Reynolds .......actually, Stuart *hated* folks saying that but it’s hard not to hear it, he was a fabulous guitarist nonetheless. RIP Stuart Adamson.
There's nothing cooler than the pipes!
So glad I grew up in the 80s! Best decade of music...EVER
One of the best lyrics in rock history, 'You can't stay here with every single hope you have shattered.'
Agree! Although this whole song is a lyrical gem.
Heard this song a gazillion times and only know the lyric "in a big country"
"You can't expect to grow flowers in the desert."
R.I.P - William Stuart Adamson
11 April 1958 - 16 December 2001
Alucard Hellsing, he's 1 of my heroes.
He died on my birthday. Such a great performer!
So young
Alucard Hellsing only 43 years, not a Canada standard.
Anthony Ivan Aglugub Jr. ......not sure I understand a Canadian connection but if you simply meant Stuart’s age, he was far too young.
I'm watching this on St Andrew's Day. 🏴
This was back in the 80s when Scotland took over the world with Big Country, Simple Minds, Cocteau Twins, Proclaimers just to name a few. Good ol days lads
This man was an absolute genius and should be respected as such, he is truly missed
I agree
He died?
@@TobeyStarburst
Hanged himself in Honolulu on December 16, 2001.
Toast and Marmalade
I didn’t know he hanged himself; I know Stuart was found dead in that hotel room after going missing for a month; not even contacting his wife and family but had no idea about c.o.d... RIP Stuart Adamson 🖤
Praying for him still.RIP Stuart
This has been such a good song for years so let's keep listening to it today, tomorrow and forever😀
Amen X 2 😬
Big Country grew flowers in the desert.
It is now 42 years ago , I met my English husband while travelling Tunisia .
Moved to UK and being married since .
This song will always remind of those early time together .

Still love this song in 2023!
"I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert, but I can look and breathe and see the sun in winter time."
Peregrine C funny, just as i was getting to this comment the part came on love it
@@imissthawwf94 Cool, Baby. Very cool.
I always thought they were singing "I'm not expecting to grow pharaohs in the desert."
If they had shot the video at Mountain Warfare Training Center, Staff Sgt. Frankenberger would have been standing at the bottom putting a stunned Adamson in his place--Frankenberger would have went upside his head for that sorry display of stealth and speed like he did mine @ Bridgeport.
I live in Phoenix Arizona and we are seeing the sun in winter.
My favorite song please stay alive im almost getting this immortality

“I’m not expecting to grow flowers in the dessert, but I can live and breathe and see the sun in winter time.” - kinda sums up how I feel about America. If you don’t feel this way, turn off the news and reconnect with nature and those around you then see how you feel.
Cool
Thankyou

I've loved this song ever since it came out 40+ years ago. Thank you, Stuart Adamson- RIP bro.

gotta brand new '84 f150&a new cassette tape
Big Country
Big Country, U2, The Call, Tears For Fears, & The Alarm were all toying around with the bagpipe drone guitar sound back in the day -- Big Country really perfected it on this track though
I love The Call .. Michael Been was a musical genius
Dude
Your Soo kool!!!
me and my sister's had a strict child hood. Church bullshit and verbally abuse sob dad. Music made us happy !!!!
I never knew actor Chiwetel Ejiofor at 1:27 was in Big Country.
Lol
Maybe his dad. ;^D
Stop🤭
I'm 35 and just discovered this through a XTC playlist - absolutely incredible. I love the "bagpipey" guitar work. The melody of this could've been written yesterday, that's how fresh it is.

This song is great, but this band had so many other great songs. WHAT A MAGNIFICENT!!!!! BAND. RIP Stuart
That's a brilliant guitarist , love , not bagpipes
It’s actually a guitar - echoing the sound of a set of bagpipes was his signature tone.
@@kimberlitelewisham6414 I always thought it was pipes! Lol

there are no bagpipes..its guitar effects...not too difficult to do with the right effects pedals!...sounds like the pipes...sounds good to a scotsman!!!!!!!!
