Is Slipknot just "scary boy music"? The answer surprised me. Join me- a professional opera singer as I listen to Slipknot for the first time performing "Snuff".

  • @JimMulvaney
    @JimMulvaney Місяць тому +5

The song is about an unrequited love, it is full of regret because he believes he drove her away by confessing his love to her. The video is about his obsession with her and inability to let her go after they split. If he becomes her, he never has to let her go. The story goes that Paul heard Corey working on the song by himself and he was really self-conscious about it but Paul convinced him to keep working on it. Then one day when Corey was particularly down Paul (bass), Jim (lead guitar) and Joey(drums) surprised him with some preliminary instrumentals to go along with it and it became a collaborative effort that the band had not experienced before. I will save the rest of the story for when you react to the Live acoustic version that the comments will no doubt beg you to react to. By the way... there are NINE members in Slipknot at this time and Snuff is their most popular of the slower, emotional songs but you are right. It is not their typical sound. This video was directed by Shawn (lead percussion) featuring cameos from Malcolm McDowell and Ashley Laurence.

There definitely is scary boy imagery in Slipknots usual presentation and most of their music is much harder but, for the most part, their music deals with real issues (mental health, social injustices, feelings of isolation, protesting against mediocrity etc…). They’re a really genuinely great band. If you want a gradual bridge into their heavier stuff Yen, Vermilion parts 1 & 2 and Dead Memories are all tracks that ease ya into the heavy lol.

It looks like no one has taken a stab at unpacking the video without cheating and searching the internet to see if Corey or the band did a behind the scenes or explicitly answered it.
It follows a man tortured by the promise he once made to never forget or let go of someone who has died. We can presume he went through the 'normal' stages of grief at home, and in the opening shots, he's smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves before he escalates his coping attempts to dressing up as his lost lover in an attempt to recreate...something. Perhaps a night from years past.
The video tells a bit of a different story than the song and lyrics in my opinion, as those non-musical elements aren't present on either the album (album version is over 1 minute shorter) or when Corey does it live acoustic.
There are two more angles to approach the video from - one is from a kink angle from the shoe sniffing to self harm to cross dressing. A second would be the concept of a 'snuff' film and how this would fit into that genre... perhaps the video tape he keeps replaying may be so torturing to the main character that an otherwise innocent 'home video' has become as horrifying and painful as a snuff film following his loss. That's all too much to unpack for a YT comment section though.
Hope you do more reactions, I love how much musical knowledge and attention to detail you brought to this song!

    • @TealCamel
      @TealCamel 22 дні тому

Great synopsis. Another possible interpretation is that she is living but has left him; but either way, he can't cope with the loss and has taken to becoming her in order to try to fill the void. A third possible interpretation is that she never existed; she was a figment of his imagination that became so real his mind splintered and he started having multiple personalities, and he keeps reliving the loss over and over as in the "real" personality he keeps finding the clues his alter-ego left, such as the lipstick on the glass or the shoe.
One of the reasons I love the video is that it invites such speculation and discussion. There's no real "clear" answer.

The amazing thing about slipknot is they are diverse, they can pull off a song like this very well although typically this isn't their core sound. Corey wrote this song about a girl who helped him through a real hard time. He fell in love with her but she didn't feel the same way back and it broke him. The bassist at the time Paul Gray who unfortunately passed away young due to an overdose pushed Corey to release it. Originally he wasn't going to but Paul pushed him to, Now this song is more of a tribute to him so Corey finds it very hard to perform this live. Once you go down the slipknot rabbit hole you will be hooked. It's a deep rabbit hole, so get comfortable and enjoy your stay 😊

I would love a reaction to Dax Riggs, who is one of the most underrated vocalists! There is a great Night is the Notion live performance on here that he does, but there is a lot of good stuff he does as Dax Riggs, Deadboy and the Elephantmen, or Acid Bath.

A lot of Slipknot's compositions are very percussion driven, probably because they have 3 percussionists, and also because Shawn is one of the lead writers. Having 9 members in a band really expands that instrumental palette they can call on.
The song itself is about obsession and unrequited love. When Corey was going through a really rough stage he had a close friend who stood by him and helped him through it. Corey began to fall for her, but when he opened up about it he found she didnt see him that way. It took him a long time to get over it.
To add to that, when Corey brought this song to the band most of them weren't enthusiastic about it except for bassist Paul. Paul encouraged Corey to push it through and helped the rest of the band see it's merit, and it eventually became one of their signature hits. In 2010 Paul died from an incorrectly prescribed overdose. Now when ever they perform this song it reminds Corey of Paul. The live acoustic version of Snuff that people recommend is from Corey's solo performance, and is an incredible emotion fueled performance

    Some context for Slipknot's Discography:
    1. Their self titled album that came first has what a lot of fans to consider some of best songs they've written. Probably their 2nd best album.
    2. Their Iowa album is considered their heaviest, darkest, and "scariest" album. This is what many consider to be core, pure, and unadulterated SLIPKNOT. Widely regarded as their best album by longtime fans.
    3. Volume 3 subliminal verses album is when corey changes up his vocals a bit (many think for the worse) and gets clean from alcohol. The band at this point has gained much more widespread popularity.
    4. All hope is gone album is when corey really starts to work on improving his lyrics and again changes his vocals a bit. This is also the last album with all original members.
    5. The gray chapter. Their bassist Paul Gray passed away a few years before this album and the band almost separated because of it. This album is dedicated to him. The band also dropped their drummer Joey Jordison due to medical reasons. With this they gained a new bassist and drummer Alessandro Venturella and Jay Weinberg.
    6. We are not your kind saw another member leave. He was a percussionist (Chris Fehn). He was replaced by Michael Pfaff.
    7. The End so far... this album saw craig jones their media/samples member record and play a few shows before leaving the group. Additionally, their drummer Jay Weinberg also played on this album and a few shows, before he found out he was suddenly no longer in the band.
    Recommended listening
    1. Purity
    2. Disasterpiece
    3. (SIC)
    4. Surfacing
    5. Dead Memories
    6. Nero Forte
    7. Wait and Bleed
    8. Duality
    9. Eyeless
    10. Vermillion part 1 and Vermillion part 2 (they both should count as one song).

you absolutely must listen to The drug in me is Reimagined by Falling in Reverse, I won't spoil anything but it's so magnificent that you can't help but love it, the singer's voice is spine-chilling, few singers can sing like that. thumb your nose to make him read it.

If you're still looking for scary-boy-heavy-af Slipknot, I'd suggest Scissors from their self-titled album, Disasterpiece from Iowa (it's absolutely brutal and probably what you were thinking of, in terms of overall sound), The Blister Exists from The Subliminal Verses, Gematria (The Killing Fields) from All Hope Is Gone, Lech from .5: The Gray Chapter, Solway Firth from We Are Not Your Kind and Warranty from The End, So Far.
Each song has it's own unique feel obviously and you'd probably enjoy just about any of them, if you're at all into the heavier side of music.

imo the ending just explains that he has completely lost himself and his grip on reality from the pain, and has to resort to self-deception to stop the pain. True love is forever, even if you don't want it to be

Just discovered your channel today, 26 Apr 24. Can't say I listened to much Slipknot or Nu Metal in general. But I love the band Soen and their live in studio cover of this song.
Suggestions for reactions to great rock/metal singers that 99% of reactors haven't done:
Daniel Gildenlöw - Pain Of Salvation
Matt Smith - Theocracy (not Dr. Who 😊)
Daniel Heiman - Lost Horizon (early 2000's, more recently the bands Sacred Outcry, and Warrior Path)
    Andy Kuntz - Vanden Plas

Just wanted to make an artist suggestion of someone who you will probably love reacting to and may bring lots of eyeballs and potential new subscribers to your channel. He is setting the world on fire right now. And that person is Ren, a Welsh singer/songwriter/and rapper. From musical and storytelling perspective, his most operatic songs are probably " Hi Ren," "The tale of Jenny and screech ( Full version)" & "Money Game part 3". He has an awesome singing voice which is most predominantly displayed on the track "Back on 74/Message in a bottle retake," "Fred Again Mashup," and his live duets with Chinchilla ("Chalk outlines" and "How to be me"). Most reactors start their musical exploration with the song "Hi Ren". Keep up the great work and hope you check him out

Please have a look at and review Coming Home by The Tea Party. Brilliant band and Jeff Martin has an amazing voice. The band also uses a really cool eclectic collection of instruments in there music - especially on the Edges of Twilight album.
