In the LN when Rudy has to be saved by Paul it is explained that he wasn't able to understand what was happening because the Hydra started to go crazy lashing out at random and his demonic eye was showing him what was going on, but the Hydra was way too big to make sense out of what it was doing, that's when Paul goes and takes the hit instead of him. I feel like here they made it look like he was way too distracted lol
Ok so this episode is a perfect adaptation expect for one thing : the moment when rudy seem to be distracted. In the novel it is clearly stated that his demon demon eye couldn't process the informations because the hydra was to close and was going bersek using his cut heads as a last resort. It's unfortunate because without the context, I see why people would blame rudy and think he messed up.
I think it's somewhat the right thing to do, because Rudy would blame himself too. He would blame himself so much. I think it's one of his pivotal moment, so absolving his mistake kinda weaken the story.
Additionally, Rudy can’t use battle aura, there is only so much a human body can do and a limit to how fast he can move without it. Paul would be happy to know, and it’s shown in the episode that he was happy, his sacrifice resulted in saving his beloved son and wife. I knew this was coming as a LN reader, and it was phenomenally adapted.
He messed up, not because he was distracted but because he was TOO focused, so he got tunnel vision and didn't take into consideration the severed heads. Ofc he is inexperience and it was a high stress situation, it is not his fault he messed up
one point ppl missed about Poul getting angry at rudy was that, rudy was calm, yes, but he paniced when he heard about roxy missing, Paul saw that and was thinking that rudy simply doesn't care about Zenith that much and he was right, rudy was calm becouse zenith is not that important to him and Paul simply noticed that and was angry, same think happened when thay met after the teleportation, rudy's first thought was about Silfy not anybody else
The last moments of the Hydra actually recognized Rudeus as a greater threat than Paul, so it strategically swung around its headless necks to disorganize their party formation, which threw off Rudeus and made him check others' situation. The thing that's lacking so far though is how they haven't shown or explained much about the importance of "Battle Aura" to the viewers despite it being explained/talked about to Rudeus many times in novel (even the manga), especially during Rudeus's daily morning training with Badigadi before finding Sylphie's identity. Simply put, it's mana manipulation that enhances physical capabilities of the wielder. I'll omit details as to why this piece of information is important for now in case the next episode finally introduces this, as the novel brought this up again just after Zenith's awakening.
Rudy was using his demon eye at the moment Paul saved him, but couldn’t process wtf was happening because the hydra was freaking the fuck out since it was almost dead. So Rudy was actually locked in, but it’s the same thing like with Orsted, he saw what was gonna happen but couldn’t react/ couldn’t process it in time since he’s a mage and usually fights from far away, but had to stay close up this fight so that the fire magic actually worked against the hydra. Also probably all happened in like 5 seconds, so rudy really couldn’t do anything since he’s not fast like Paul.
This was Rudy’s first labyrinth, he was thrown into the deep end on his first run. There was so much on the line, but he started to believe, for just a second, that they could win. And in the LN it lets you know he wasn’t unlocked, he was using his Demon Eye to try and predict the Hydras movements, but was overwhelmed like he was against Orsted, he saw what was happening but couldn’t react in time/make sense of what he saw. And since he’s just a mage he couldn’t react fast enough to save himself, but he had to stay close enough so that the hydras force field didn’t negate his spells. So fucking unfortunate dude but man, rest in peace Paul he chopped off all but one hydra head and carried the team. W dad happy Father’s Day.
So the way dungeons work in this show is that they are living breathing things that get created. So when zenith got teleported by the mana disaster the dungeon was literally made then and there and she became the source of mana and power for that dungeon with a guardian that protects her. Mana can affect things crazily that’s why they had to burn Paul and crush his bones because the surrounding mana can be absorbed into Paul’s corpse and turn him into a zombie basically and he could go around killing. Nanahoshi did say in a previous episode that mana explains all the weird things that happen in this world
by chance do you know who is the black haired girl we see with Paul few episodes back, that tears up in this episode when they bring the news at the guild? She seems more than a casual companion to him
@@SuperDaDaD vierra and shierra are two people who used to live in beuna village. You see Rudy waving to them at the start of episode 3 before he meets Sylphiette. They both got teleported by the mana disaster to a bandit camp where they were made sex slaves pretty much. Paul ended up saving them and vierra the brown hair girl was traumatized by the events of being a sex slave that she is now terrified of men. Shierra ended up not taking it as hard and that’s why she wore skimpy clothing to attract the eyes of men so it could help her sister vierra not get looked at by men and trigger her trauma. She saw how Rudy acted when wearing that skimpy clothing so she dresses more properly now to avoid people getting the wrong idea about her relationship with Paul. Also there are no black hair girls in mushoku tensei besides nanahoshi, because she’s Japanese lol
Man this episode is just... Bruh Like... - Rudeus lost a limb. - Paul died believing he was a bad father - Paul also did all this, pooled so many resources and effort, just to rescue a vegtable - Healing magic heals the body BUT NOT the mind. So they're literally gonna be forced to take care of a constant reminder of their failure - Technically, Rudeus lost both his parents. - Rudeus caused his father's death, both by disobeying the mangod and by slipping mid-battle - Rudeus is already very mentally weak and breaks easily. So imagine this situation man... - Also, when you think about it, he lost 4 parents now. Goddamn.
A little more background on why Rudeus was just standing there needing to be saved by Paul. The Hydra ended up squirming around so much that it bugged out his magic eye and he couldn't tell what the Hydra was doing so he froze up.
🫡 Paul: "You are twice the man I used to be, Rudy." .... "Here, let me demonstrate..." 😱 Fire. Acid. And occasionally ice. This is what you need against a regenerating opponent.... Oh, crap, its a Pyrohydra.
Episode Title: Parents Premiere date: Fathers day Rudy lost his left hand Paul lost his life Zenith is in a vegetative state Father's day is not great for Rudeus
1) i DO NOT envy Rudy here, the probable infinite “what if”s he will have in the future regarding Paul or “how he could have acted differently” will leave some lasting trauma forrrrsure 2) How will his sisters take it?! 3) This has to be the regret Mangod said Rudy’ll experience, anything else might be overkill imo
Who is the black haired girl we see with Paul few episodes back, that tears up in this episode when they bring the news at the guild? She seems more than a casual companion to him
She’s one of the girls Paul saved from slavery. They never did anything together (Rudy accused him of sleeping with her back when they had their parent child fight in S1)
This episode was really one huge punch into Rudeus's face Rudy: "I guess it's good I only lost one body part while fighting this hydra" Then he sees Paul losing half of his body Rudy: "Does losing my temper help anything?" staying calm for the whole time But being too calm actually caused him not noticing the attack on him, causing Paul's life Rudy: "She's less a mother but more a someone I happened to live with" Zenith looking at him as a stranger in the very end of this episode.
It wasn't because he was too calm that he slipped up during the battle. The problem was that he was too focused during the battle and his demon eye went haywire when the Hydra started flinging it's heads around when he was so close. ~Novel
I don't think this is spoiler but the anime didn't do a great job or maybe just didn't have time to fit it in cuz this episode was jam-packed up to the last second, of showing Rudy's perspective based on the light novel before Paul saved him, maybe they'll show it next episode

Thanks for explaining this
I was a little confused by that when I was watching the anime.
And he got crushed by hydra not bitten, I think
Paul did the most fatherly thing ever so it's appropriate for it to be on father's day

If you think the show already peak after season 2 then get ready for season 3, things will get messed up real quick
