Dr. Berg talks about ketosis and answers the question: Is ketosis safe long term.
Running your body on ketones is very safe compared to running your body on glucose. Glucose is a dirty fuel and leaves residue. But the brain responds very well to ketones. Ketones are one of the original fuel sources. Running your body on ketones is running on fat and essential fatty acids. Glucose and carbs are not essential.
You need vegetable carbs for vitamins and minerals and trace minerals. Ketogenic acidosis occurs only in a severe diabetic type 1 situation. You do not lose muscle mass when you consume ketones. In fact, the ketogenic diet preserves your proteins and muscles. This is due to the growth hormone (GH). Diabetics lose muscle mass due to an insulin problem. Insulin also lowers GH growth hormone.
Too much insulin will deplete potassium, magnesium and B-vitamins, and calcium due to insulin resistance.
Your body makes a lot of cholesterol, so adding more fat to a ketogenic diet will just cause it to make less. Insulin is the hormone that makes cholesterol and triglycerides.
Regarding kidney stones, ketosis is safe and running your body on foods high in oxalates (spinach, beans, grains) all increase kidney stones.

Dr. Berg, I want to personally thank you for saving my life. I happened to stumble upon your videos about 1 year and a half ago, I was 378 pounds, and out of control. To say I was addicted to sugar would be the understatement of a lifetime. I had just done a blood test around that time. I was pre-diabetic with my fasted blood sugar around 115 mml, and my cholesterol was terrible. I started a ketogenic eating regime based on your videos. Exactly one year later I was tested again. My weight had dropped to 299, 79 pounds lost. My blood fasting blood sugar dropped to the 70s. My Cholesterol leveled out, and I've never felt better. Until I told my doctor how how I lost the weight. He immediately scolded me telling me how terrible it was and that I should stop it immediately. Scared, I left his office with the fear that if I continued Keto long term I would end up dead. I though that maybe if I started to incorporate "healthy" carbs into my diet that I would still be able to loose weight and be healthy. I gave it 2 months before I was back up to 340 pounds. I was furious. I went back on keto 4 months ago, and a few minutes ago I weighed myself at 269. I was so excited I could have cried. I have never felt better in my entire life. You broke me free from my addiction to sugar. I no longer eat fast food, I know longer drink soda, and I went from being a borderline alcoholic, to being sober. It seems I used to drink to get over the pain of being fat, my life is so much better now that I know longer need the alcohol. At the time I am writing this, your video has 18 thumbs down. I'm sorry, to the people who dislike this video, I'd really like to know why. This man changed my life. I'm keto for life. The benefits are amazing, my mental focus is the best it's ever been, I can exercise for hours with no sugar crashes, and it gives me an edge at work. After lunch everyone falls asleep at their desk from riding the insulin high, and I'm still bright eyed and bushy tailed hitting the sales floor. Thanks again Dr Berg. I love your videos! P.S. your keto pizza is amazing.

Tom Cavins the reason you started gaining weight again when you got off keto was because you where taking in more calories than your body was burning, not because you weren't on keto. Whether you're on keto or not it doesn't matter how you lose weight, as long as you're in a caloric deficit then you're gonna lose weight. You can lose weight eating nothing but McDonald's and cookies just as long as you're in a caloric deficit. You gained weight again cause you where in a caloric surplus

Nice! Everyone who does keto properly (everyone's body is different) always says that they feel younger and more energetic and mental clarity. I've done a keto-carnivor diet lately with little to no sweeteners artificial or natural and very little dairy and little veggies just brocolli and asparagus and lettuce and mainly beef chicken pork and eggs avocados olives olive oil pecans lots of steaks and wings. To each their own because nobody's own keto plan is one size fits all, listen to your body and do what feels right. I feel little to no gas going ketovore keto w veggies I get more gas but more carnivore style reduces all gas nearly

Great information. I am 25 days into a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting daily 18-24 hours and feel great. I don't get hungry, lift and run completely fasted, sleep deeply 7 hours a night, and feel more calm generally speaking. I have lost 12 pounds and 3 inches around my stomach. This is so easy that I wonder why more people are unable to do it.

I have lost 20lbs in the last 6 weeks by practicing your teachings. I have looked for someone that talks about Keto in Spanish, since it’s my primary language, but they always emphasize that there is something wrong with Keto. I come from a Mexican background where all we know is to consume refined carbohydrates and loads of sugar. I talked to my family and friends about what I learned from your videos but they don’t want to listen since the doctors and nutritionist don’t talk about health but give pills to “help” an issue (all of us have something weight problems, high blood pressure, thyroid, cholesterol, etc) Great job Doc! Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing :) Oh, I was thinking on going back to college to get my AA in Psychology but I’m changing it and to Nutrition, I think I’ll be able to help more people this way if I can teach them about health and the benefit of a healthy life style.

Someone asked me in a reply if this is the same Dr. Robert Atkins that died of a 'heart attack'. He did NOT die of a heart attack as his critics love to boast! But rather a severe head injury as a result of slipping on the ice on the way to his clinic at the tender young age of 72. He was a board certified cardiologist BTW. I am happy to say that I now eat eggs several times per week with no issue! I was also supposed to have surgery, for another reason that I was able to cancel and I feel is no longer needed. Sadly not much support from friends as everyone thinks I am being so unhealthy, and that is disappointing as I have never felt better, and now nobody supports or will even ask. I am proud of myself and have never felt better. The funny thing is that it is clear that they think that this lifestyle is unhealthy long term, but coming from where I was, living off junk food, wasn't an issue.
Anywhooo ...Is it common to heal from anaphylactic allergies by following a ketogenic lifestyle?

(Have you even wandered why he never bring up REAL researchers on his simplistic patronising videos? Oh... I don't know... Maybe because all researchers on Ketogenic diet have shown the same side effects that he just told his followers, and said that there is nothing to worry about...

Michele L did someone tell you you can't ever eat fruit or roots on the ketogenic diet? You can in moderation. Most people do between 20-50g of carbs a day from vegetables and I personally include a lot of berries,(avocado, blueberry, strawberry) which are high in nutrition and low in carbs. You can also do targeted ketosis allowing you to eat even more carbohydrates based around your workouts.

If you do veganism right, yes, it can be healthy. It can also be unhealthy. And as was mentioned, your great grandfather lived in a time when hard work was the norm and the food wasn't spliced, mixed, and Frankensteined. Soil was richer and there were no chemicals, sprays and GMO all over the grains and vegetables. Many ketoers don't disparage veganism. They disparage VEGANS because vegans refuse to consider that keto is healthy for you. They are adamant that anybody who eats saturated fat (or lots of fat) and meat are going to get heart disease and die. This is complete BS but they demonize it and anyone who is on keto.

They put pregnant women on low fat high carb diets. It's sick. Few doctors will recommend pregnant women to be on a (obviously high calorie) ketogenic diet but the few that do see good results. This unhealthy system has been drilled into everyones head for 30+ years. It takes time to adapt, especially when stores won't help. Personally I'm on keto for epilepsy because I want to be off meds when I have kids when but I must admit my fat is slipping away.

How about letting her watch some people talking about their keto experience and yes Dr Fung. The medical people want to put you on medication and have you eat the same macros every day. I think they do it based on average patient compliance. They know a lot of people will not change so they cater to the lowest common denominator. You need to decide if she is in that category or if she is ready to make a real change. It has to be her decision though ..... If it were me I would say I believe keto would be the best and give her somethings to watch and read. Ask her what she thinks, hopefully she is the type of person who takes control of her own health even if it means changing medical teams. One of my friends is following western medicine protocol but she is very disciplined so her health is improving anyways so it's not all negative.

My grandmother has alzehimers and dementia and she always ate sugar with everything and rice everyday as well as garlic which if you look in to the vedas they mention how garlic eats at your brain so eatting it when you're sick is ok but everyday is dangerous. Watch Dr. Stephen Phinneys' videos. Also, there's a Canadian Dr., Jay Wortman, I think, who has done a lot of documented work with native peoples. But there is tons of Keto research that is well documented, if you care to look for it.

Lol..Any study doesn't prove that sugar is ever safe...Nor is insulin spiking etc..It's unfortunate most of our foods readily available are insulin spikers-

Heian Shodan If you didn't have an answer, you should have moved. This person is just trying to learn. Chronic (long) sugar consumption is not bad. AS LONG as you don't over consume sugar.

Thanks again Doc, I have been on keto for 7 months and doing very good. My weight loss is steady, I'm 8 pounds away from hitting my goal. Keto is a lifelong goal. 😊
