The worse thing that happened to me with Keto, was I needed to take around 40 items of clothing to the tailor to make smaller. I lost 13kg in 4 months and felt fantastic.

Yes and no. One industry gains when another looses. People will still spend their money on something. Yes, business will decline for clinics, pharma, and processed food. But people would probably spend that saved money on something else like cars, furniture, nicer homes, etc. That will also create jobs to counterbalance those lost in unhealthy industries.

Frankly, I'd rather live a shorter life on keto feeling the way I do now than a long life the way I was before. On a standard diet I was chronically ill. On half a dozen preacriptions. Keto restored my health. Drug free. Pain free.

Add Himalayan salt to your shakes, coffee, lemon water etc. I noticed it at first during things like Jiu Jitsu, but as you get more fat adapted, you'll be surprised what you can do. @Billy B could it be the so called keto-flu? i never experienced it so i dont know. i did a transition period where i slowly reduced my carb intake, instead of rushing it. been low carb since 2019, never had keto-flu, and still feeling great. some peopIe might advice about fixing electrolytes and getting enough sodium. i never bothered with that so i dont know if it will fix the issue. maybe eating more food will solve the issue. i notice better strength and endurance when i eat alot of fat and meat in the previous day. carb loading also helps. even just a small amount of carbs, like a banana, potato or a some rice can help alot. i get cramps when i dont eat enough meat, or when i overdo the salt.

I got eating saturated fats back into my diet from Keto and moved onto a carnivore diet. My health and mental state of wellbeing has improved tenfold since eating saturated fats.
Your right though its quality of foods and how it’s farmed and hacked. Take dairy totally compromised, by sterilisation through boiling for hours. I had a debate with a vegan who was comparing fresh vegetables with dairy and I suggested they boil their vegetables for 6 hours and see what their vegetables nutritional values are after that, as an honest comparison. All our foods are compromised, even certified organic. It’s grown for yield and profit, never for nutritional worth. Until We hold our agricultural industry accountable for systematic poisoning us through lack of nutritional worth we are always going to be health compromised irrespective of the diet we choose

I’ve been doing the Keto diet for quite a few years but didn’t know it was called Keto . I designed a diet for me and my wife when she was getting sick then getting cancer. So I designed us a diet to remain healthy. I called it the Diet For Life. When have doing it for years now . We don’t get sick from colds , flus and pneumonia anyone. Pneumonia is a problem she had. She has had polio as a child and has a compromised immune system. So we worked to build the gut healthy. She has had breast cancer twice . So we wanted to rid our diet of sugars and processed foods . All and all the diet morphed into a natural way of eating that is low carb , lots of veggies, nuts and certain seeds good meats that are naturally raised and lots of good fats . This ends up being similar to the Keto diet. Whatever it is we lost body fat and gained health. We have doing this style of eating for approximately 15 years. It’s odd nowits the latest fad. Well I’m glad people are changing to a natural way of eating to reduce inflammation in their bodies and get a healthy gut . This is the key to health And the side effects are fat loss .

I was pre-diabetic before Keto and was diagnosed as having a "metabolic disorder"....My labs are amazing now...went from having triglycerides in the 600's to 147!.. which is in the normal range. As the dr. said ..the only lab value that didn't improve was my cholesterol, which i'm ok with because in my family history having a high value is normal, it's what our livers produce naturally. My mom is 83 and has had a high cholesterol level throughout her lifetime. I've been a social worker fro 22 years in health care and have seen the effects of hypertension and diabetes combined...and it scared me...that's why I did this diet...I didn't want the vascular problems related to having a metabolic disorder like I have seen...the amputations and neuropathy.

I have found that the things that help me be the healthiest physically are:
    1.) Regular, sufficient sleep
2.) Large amounts of cooked AND raw (colorful) vegetables
3.) Medium amounts of raw, colorful fruits
4.) Moderate-Moderately Low consumption of Beans, Nuts, Avocado, Olives and Seeds
5.) If Fruit is consumed in greater quantities, and exercise levels are lower, Grains and Starches should not be consumed in moderate-larger amounts. If exercise levels are higher, more rice and potatoes, etc. can be consumed, along with bananas, pineapple, mangos, etc., also fruit juice to a small extent.
6.) Exercise is good. Stretching, etc.
7.) High quality animal foods are fine in moderately low-lower amounts, and the fats in these foods should be paired with foods rich in vitamin A, D, E, K, etc. Vegetables, beans, nuts, potato, avocado, etc. should be consumed more regularly and in greater percentages of the plate/volume of meals, compared to animal foods. (Fruit is the dessert)
8.) Lunch, or Brunch, should be the biggest meal of the day, with plenty of protein and fats, carbs as well. Dinner should be lighter animal protein/fats, like fish, also avocado, nuts, seeds, beans, etc., and vegetables, with not much starch/carbs...
9.) Veggies, water, sleep, exercise, and some high quality animal foods as well, in moderately low amounts/frequencies. Beans help keep carb cravings under control.

This is my 5th week into keto. I am taking an ACE Inhibitor even though it doesn't help to lower very high bp, doctor continues to recommend it. Could the numbness/tingling in the face be caused by an "excess" of potassium?

I had one in 2021 and one in 2022 so I read up on the clinicals for epileptic kids and it turned out that was a common effects. fix was potassium citrate delayed release (by prescription). I couldn't get it via my doctor so what I did was around 2.5g of potassium citrate in my coffee that I sip during the day. I also increased water intake to an extra 20-36 oz a day. 2 years now, no more kidney stones.

Hi Dr Westman and everyone. I have been on low carb since two months now so I guess body is still adapting but have noticed increased trouble with the feces due to hardening and less moisture in them which is painful. My guess is restricting carbs also places a limit in fiber intake which might be almost certainly the issue here. Previously I ate a lot of fruits and had no poop difficulties. Also have some concerns with gut flora and microbiom in the long run . Common sense tells me maybe I should add probiotics to my diet, like kefir, chucrute, caspian, viili, fermented foods, to tackle this issue.
May I ask your views on this matter? Thank you

How would you recommend a person with hypoglycemia, transition to keto diet when they crash when lowering carbs?

    • @AdaptYourLife
      @AdaptYourLife  5 років тому +2

Hi Connie Schmoll, you should increase salt intake and perhaps try eating smaller and more frequent meals (signal for your brain on hunger, as it’s not getting the glucose it’s used to). This transition may result in Keto Flu. I hope this helps.

    • @terjeoseberg990
      @terjeoseberg990 5 років тому +1

Connie Schmoll, He's right. Low insulin levels cause your kidneys to excrete more sodium which lowers your blood sodium levels. If your sodium levels are too low, your pancreas will produce more insulin to retain sodium. Low sodium is very dangerous and will kill you, so it's very important for your body to maintain your sodium levels.
Go to the doctors and get your sodium levels checked. If it's low, then try consuming more salt. Also, LoSalt is very good because it's half sodium chloride (salt) and half potassium chloride. Potassium is just as important as salt.
Effects of insulin on kidney function and sodium excretion in healthy subjects.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2676669
"Sodium clearance declined with increasing plasma insulin concentrations, while glomerular filtration rate and lithium clearance remained unchanged."
The effect of insulin on renal sodium metabolism. A review with clinical implications.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7028550
"Increases in plasma insulin concentration within the physiological range stimulate sodium reabsorption by the distal nephron segments and this effect is independent of changes in circulating metabolites or other hormones."
Therefor it's very likely that you're sodium deficient and this causes your body to produce excess insulin which then leads to decreased blood sugar. If you have a glucose monitor you can experiment with drinking a little bit of salt water to see if your blood sugar levels increase. If the salt is able to lower your insulin levels then your pancreas might produce some glucagon which will stimulate gluconeogenesis which should bring your blood sugar back up.
But I would have the doctors check your blood sodium levels to verify that you are sodium deficient. Or at least that you're not high in sodium. We wouldn't want to make a sodium problem worse.

I’ve been on the intermittent fasting diet for around 5weeks and lost 6kg, with very little exercise. Mostly it’s 18/6, no food after 8pm and nothing apart from sparkling mineral water, before 2pm. I don’t eat more than 1200 calories per day, I don’t eat too much refined sugar, no white rice, or potatoes or stuff with white flower. No dairy, I drink almond milk, a couple of eggs per day (hard boiled). Where I struggle is with variety in my diet. I’m lactose & fructose intolerant, so my selection of fruits & veges is limited. When I see a dietitian, she ridicules my fasting habits, tells me my food intolerances are all in my head and that I should be in the gym 4 times a week for 1hr of resistance training. Never mind the arthritis in my knees & back😠

I have also eaten keto for twenty years. At first I lost weight, but then plateaued. I was happy to lose weight, but I went on the keto diet because it improved my health. In the last couple of years though, my fasting glucose has been around 108, which I was told not to worry about. I was more strict about the carbs but never seemed to be in ketosis even if I cut out carbs altogether. As far as weight loss, it only happened if I went on a water fast, and only then did I go into ketosis. I finally bought a glucose monitor and a ketone monitor to try and find out what was going on. I have now switched to the carnivore diet, with fasting on alternate days. I am finally in ketosis, but even working out will drive up my glucose to as high as 114. And I am not losing weight. This is crazy.

Regarding the question of BECOMING insulin resistant after going on keto:I think Dr. Westman is right. I think there is a dawn effect for blood glucose that is higher for keto dieters than for others. My morning "fasting" BG runs about 99 to 107, not great by normal standards. However, my average fasting (not MORNING fasting) is between 69 and 80. The body, when in fat burning mode, isn't predisposed toward burning up the morning shot of glucose the liver provides. Dr. Sarah Hallberg has commented on this phenomenon. I documented it for myself with extensive BG readings taken at various times of the day.

Keto is still good, even if it happens to raise your Morning fasting blood glucose to about 100 or 105. The slightly elevated BG (probably) doesn't mean the same thing for keto dieters as it does for others. But to be absolutely sure, you could get a cheap home blood glucose tester, and check your BG at other fasting times (times other than the early morning hours).

Isn't because your body can produce the glucose he needs from fats and protein? Maybe he's just producing the glucose he needs for your day/routine through a process called "gluconeogenesis". That's why eating carbs is kind of bad because you end up playing with your insulin and feel sleepy everytime because you're basically overworking your body. The main source of fuel should be fat and protein (moderate) with some vegetables and then the body will produce what you need. That's why you get that BG higher when you wake up.

I also think that my body may be developing food intolerances that I never had before, as though my body no longer likes to process grains or dairy as well as it once did. The easy fix is to stay keto, but these are my suspicions.

I damaged myself by doing low carb long term. Now I do high carb and it’s been very healing. I’m still at my high school weight in my mid-40s.

We should all become keto adapted.. Meaning that we can carb up now and then.. but mostly keep it low if we don't exercise or do much physical activity. Other important dietary things to do regularly is intermittent fasting (for autophagy and gut reset) and no eating at least 3 hours before bed time.

Sounds like the long-term effect of the keto diet is that it's more likely you will be around in the long-term to experience effects.

Must we eat Carbs at all? I have been on the Carnivore diet as a trial because keto diet did not maintain ketosis for me and I want to fight diabetes. Besides eating only meat and fat, I also drink mineral water. Thanks for your answer in advance.

Lynda Rose do you watch your ketone levels? Not all sugar alcohols have low carb values. You also can't completely discount fiber in all cases, despite popular belief. If you were using xylitol or maltilol, you were getting quite a few carbs from them. Be careful with your BG and insulin levels if you try this again.

I am 2 days on Keto...Accidentally drank 3 drinks of a diet soda that kiddo bought me...but it had Vanilla syrup! Caught myself and she traded me drinks and hers was 100 % diet...Habits...habits are gonna be hard! Next weekend I have a buffet meeting to go to...and I am gonna take veggies and meat rolls with cream cheese...Will that be ok to take ya think? It will be hard to pass up the Native frybread...but that is my plan!

Sugar-free drinks trigger almost as big an insulin spike as sugary ones. The body responds to the sweet taste. Best leave them all alone.

120 bg would be a vast improvement over my current readings. I think my last a1c was 9.

Is it okay for someone whose Gallbladder removed to start a keto diet? What type of food helps digest fats without a gallbladder?

Hi Fatima, it’s 100% ok. As a FYI, Dr. Westman has an online course called Keto Made Simple? This course teaches you exactly how to implement a Keto diet, safely and without all the confusion. Over and over the video lessons, there is also 3 weeks of support within a private Facebook group. The results have been incredible. If you would like to join the waitlist, click the link below.

How about the alaline/acid balance? They say healthy body should be alkaline but keto introduces lots of acidic foods

In my opinion consuming high fat diet together with carbohydrates intersects with body metabolism? It is like pouring both diesel and gasoline together into your car.
