Keto OATMEAL Battle - The BEST Low Carb Oatmeal Recipe?
Traditional oatmeal is high in carbohydrates, and doesn't fit easily into a low carb lifestyle - if at all. Today we test two keto oatmeal recipes to find out if its possible to replicate the taste and texture of oatmeal without the huge carb hit. One option is a traditional stovetop oatmeal recipe, and the other is a warm baked oatmeal dish that cooks and rises in the oven. Are either of these low carb oatmeal recipes as good as traditional oats and all the carbs and sugars that come along with it? Let's find out!

I used to love Cream of Wheat. Now I make Cream of Flax.
    1/3 cup ricotta
    1 egg, whisked
    1/6 cup heavy cream
Heat over medium until it just starts to thicken.
Add 1 tablespoon flax meal, sweetener, and butter. 😋

Hello, I feel like the two key ingredients of my go to "oatmeal" didn't get a chance to truly shine in the Sweet as Honey recipe. It's hemp hearts (for the chunkiness) and ground flax seed (for the gooeyness).
    My recipe:
I take 15 g of almond flour, 15 g of hemp hearts, 10 g whey protein, 10-15 g sweetener, 8 g flax flour (mine is very finely ground and more absorbent than regular ground flax seeds, but I'm sure a bit more of those would work just as great) and a little salt.
I mix it together, pour 130 g of boiling water over it (I go by weight not volume since 1 ml = 1 g and I can just keep the bowl on the scale) and stir, add more water as needed to get to preferred thickness. Vanilla extract is optional. I let a slice of butter melt on top (sometimes with my microwave's help) and sprinkle with cinnamon.
With the butter it should be around 350 kcal and 4 g net carbs. I haven't had oatmeal in a long time but the consistency is similarly gooey, I think. It's certainly not slimey and everything is customizable.
I haven't tried any of the baked "oatmeal" recipes and it does look great, so maybe it beats mine by a landslide, but I like how easy mine is and that it's one portion.
Thank you for another great video, Wes.
PS: If you ever try my version, let me know, if it worked for you. To anyone, who read this far: 🥰

I miss oatmeal too. Used to eat it almost every day during the winter. KetoFocus has a good recipe for "oatmeal". It has Hemp Hearts, Golden Flaxseed meal, Chia seeds, Collagen and Allulose. Recipe is for one serving but I bumped it up to 6 and keep it in a quart jar in the fridge. Nuke 1/3 cup with a half cup of milk of your chioce and it comes out the texture of Cream of Wheat. Not oatmeal but I really like it and it fills the space left by oatmeal.

As for the stove top oatmeal I didn't have chia seeds so I just omitted them ( added 1/4 t of xanthum gum for thickness) and have made this several times and love it. I've been using the recipe from healthy sweet eats, very similar to the sweet as honey recipe but no almond butter. I actually mix several 8 oz jars of the dry ingredients, went so far as to get heavy cream powder, vanilla powder and 100% monkfruit powder so all I have to add is hot water. It can also be used as overnight oats. Makes it easy to take anywhere and have a low carb meal that sticks with me for hours. Love my "noatmeal", hot in the colder months, cold (overnight oats) in the summer. Topped with a dollop of peanut butter and a few Bake Believe chocolate chips, or topped with fresh berries, it is soooo yummy! My only gripe is that EVERY low carb version has coconut. I intensely dislike the texture of coconut. I guess not really a gripe, I just omit it and add a little more of the hemp hearts 😂. I should add that I always used steel cut oats rather than rolled oats when I ate oatmeal, so the consistency was really different from traditional oatmeal. Probably why I like hemp heart versions 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Thank you, Wes. Big fan of hemp hearts. I’ll try both of these-will tweak the stovetop ratio to have less chia, and would prefer mine a lot wetter (thinking Fairlife milk…). Also, I’d absolutely add chopped toasted pecans. Ok, now I want noatmeal.
(BTW, have you seen the recent hemp hearts wild rice pilaf video from the Keto Twins? Tried it yesterday and was blown away.)

I have tried Carolyn's "oatmeal" and it is good, but I found it VERY rich. I have not made it again, but when I do, I will cut back the butter by at least half. But it was a good substitute when my family is having oats for breakfast. I want to try the hemp seed oatmeal that the Keto Twins recently tested. Looks like a better version of the 2nd recipe you tested today.

In my most humbled opinion… it’s the ground Flax Seeds. My first thought was ohhh that’s a lot of ground flax…. It always slimes up with cooking so I use it in Tsp instead of TB for Cereals.

I love watching your recipe testing videos. I had wondered about Victoria’s recipe for the flour with bamboo fiber and if it was a good purchase. It is kind of expensive. You also did the noodle one from Keto Asian Flavors. I really want to try it now after watching your review and others views. I am wondering if for this recipe if you could use oat fiber to make oatmeal? According to Victoria it has zero or very low carb. I believe it is an alternative in her flour recipe if you can’t get bamboo fiber. If so that would be a game changer to have a type of oatmeal using oat fiber. Just a thought. Thank you for all your hard work!

Howdy Wes. I appreciate your work on he channel. I'm specially appreciative of your approach, highlighting one food using two different recipes. I really like that you direct folks to the creator's website instead of giving the ingredient measurements on yours. These folks do deserve our traffic and a little love for all that they do for us ketoholics. All the best to you and yours.

I’ve been trying to decide whether to make “fauxtmeal” (or as you called it “warm cereal”) since last winter. 😵‍💫 None of the recipes appealed to me - until now. I’m thinking that I may try using ramekins instead. I would probably have to cut the baking time a bit, but it would look prettier at breakfast. Thanks for your light-hearted approach to cooking (and eating). I enjoy watching you in the kitchen - so entertaining as well as enlightening! 🫶🏼

It was so rich, it could absolutely hold up to maybe a 1/4-1/3c added to the recipe. I didn’t try it, but I doubt you’d mess it up! :-)

I'm so pleased I found your channel. It is so helpful to me in discovering keto recipes that I can prepare. I haven't switched to low carb keto for weight control, it is because I was pre-diabetic according to my lab work. Watching these videos helps me to avoid some of these hidden carbs in foods I wouldn't think had them. Thanks so much!

My favorite oatmeal is 1 cup of HWC or almond milk or coconut milk or a 50/50 blend and then 1 T hemp seed, 1 T sunflower seeds, 1 T chia seeds, 1 T golden ground flax. Heat over the stove (will thicken and thicken even more when you take it over the stove and cools. Top with butter and pecans. Freakin’ awesome.
