  • How to find fish with down imaging and side imaging sonar can be difficult, but with this tip you should be able to understand when crappie or other fish, trees, rocks, or anything is below your boat as you pass over it. In this video Flopping Crappie shows you how to adjust your fish finder to tell when cover shows up on the sonar and how this will help catch more crappie and other fish.

    Davis that was good when you teach you learn. that answered a lot of questions I can see running a slow chart screen to look for fish and structure then make another pass at the chart speed that is calibrated to the boat then stop and slay. thanks.

    When you pass an object, if you hit your cursor, move it over to the object, a reading should appear on the top line of your HB unit giving distance back and distance to the side.

    • @FloppingCrappie

      I would recommend it, if you have the budget for it. Make sure your sonar unit is compatible with side imaging, even if you upgrade the transducer, it may not work with your sonar unit.

    It's all scanned in 'real time.' The chart speed should be equal or 1 above the boat speed. I like it 1 or 2 above boat speed.
    If you scan at too high a speed, the image elongates - stretches out on screen. My opinion is keep the scan 1 MPH higher then actual boat speed. You will see more accurate images on screen, whether it's 2D, Side Scan, Down Imaging.

      This a good question. From what I have experienced (specifically with my helix 5 ice fishing unit), if the transducer is not connected to the display, it will not give a GPS coordinate. My best guess is the waypoint is off the transducer, but i'm going to have to look into this more. Thanks for watching!

    Now that a few years have gone by, do you still use fast chart speeds for DI and SI?

  • @Mralaskageek
    @Mralaskageek 4 роки тому +1

    Another great video man!!! So..... it's been a year.... did you change how you set your chart speed for SI and DI? Seemed to me to be a bigger difference when using SI than when using DI. Also seemed the clarity wasn't effected too much on SI, but seemed like staying with the lower chart speed gave quite a bit more clarity on DI. So my take away from this awesome vid would be in SI, if you want almost real time response, jack up chart speed.... but with DI, I'd go for the clearer image, as even at a chart speed of 4 or 5, it looked pretty close to real time. Would you concur based on your testing of the theory of the last year?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  4 роки тому

      I still set my chart speed to 1 setting above my boat speed. (ex. chart speed set to 4 when boat speed is 3mph). I have found that when vertically jigging and using 2D sonar, increasing the chart speed as high as it can go will give a much more real time (quick response) image.

      @FloppingCrappie  5 років тому

      Flopping Crappie yes. I believe the newer side imaging mega transducers stick out about 8 inches including the bracket. My motor is about 8” from the transom so it will be close. I’ve seen where some people have to trim their motor up to get the clearance. I don’t have trim so I’d like to make sure it will clear. I use a helix 5 DI. I Try to find fish and and I run over the pond several times. I hardly ever see fish on the screen. But when I get tired of looking I just start fishing. Then I start catching fish and run over the area to see if I can spot them on the screen...still nothing. How do I set my unit where I can see fish on my screen.

      You might have to turn up the gain/ sensitivity on your sonar. Also check to make sure the transducer is level to the water. Let me know of this works for you, otherwise I may need more details about your setup to understand why you're not seeing fish.

    So it's safe to assume that @ 4 or above ...we can assume that the cover on the screen should be within a boats length or less?

      @FloppingCrappie  3 роки тому +1

      Ya, I think its safe to assume that.

    I have a question. Images on my down imaging look fine when I’m in motion but elongate and stretch when I’m sitting still. Any idea what setting will fix that issue?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  4 роки тому +1

      You're down imaging screen is working correctly, images will be stretched out as you down or are sitting still.

      Flopping Crappie When I watch you fish over brush piles the fish still look like fish and the brush pile still looks like a brush pile. On my screen they turn into lines stretching across the entire screen. I can’t make out anything. Stuff looks great when I travel over them at 2 or 3 miles an hour so I mark them. When I go back to anchor lock over the spot it looks like a jumbled mess. Gotta be my settings but can’t seem to figure it out.

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  4 роки тому +1

      My boat is still moving/passing over the brushpiles which is why they look like that. If my boat is sitting still over the brush pile, it would show straight line across the screen. The tranducer is receiving the same signal over and over again which is why it shows as a line. It is definitley not your settings. Fish will appear a straight line if the are directly below you tranducer for an extended period of time. Once the fish moves/swims away then the line will change on your screen.

    If you’re in a kayak, I assume you run your chart speed at 1?

      Thanks, I wish we had 65 water temp. I fished this weekend and saw 39 degree temps in some bays.

    Did u fish that school of crappie? Btw, that matching business is a myth. Since these are different metrics, there is nothing to match. If you ask me what is the temperature outside and i tell you 50% you will say ‘ tempersture is not measured in %’. Same thing. Boat speed is measured in mph. Screen refresh rate is measured in herz. Nothing to match.

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  5 років тому

      The matching idea came from the Humminbird website. I guess I never thought of trying to match metrics, just assumed since the Humminbird website had it, it must be somewhat true.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish 5 років тому +1

      Flopping Crappie well if u drive fast u want ur chart to update faster. Thats fair. But matching boat speed of 3 mph with setting of 3 on chart speed is not what they mean. These are totally different metrics. As a matter of fact, u get better longer arch if refresh rate is 6 when ur boat speed is 3.

    It is annoying taking people fishing and hearing about someone else's better boat or better sonar or high tech this or that. So I quit taking anyone. Beggars wishing for better in my boat can stay on the bank.
