    Day 1 of the Crappie Expo Tournament. My brother and I realied heavily on side imaging to scan for crappie underneath docks. Unfortunately, the bite wasn't great, but we managed to pull out a couple nice slabs.

    I’ve only fished Hamilton one time over a few days and couldn’t get a crappie bite. I moved down to DeGray I think is what it was and did much better.

    Watched your sonar videos, thought you might point out a couple things. On side-scan the distance left or right is range minus depth. And you might explain what makes fish arches. Simple physics…. depth, speed, and where the fish enters the cone. The height of the arch on 2D sonar, is determined by where the fish enters the cone and the depth of the cone. Example: draw a cone, then draw a vertical line down the center. The line down the side of the cone os longer than the center line. The difference is greater the deeper the cone. Let’s say 30 feet deep…..that is the center of the cone. The edge of the cone may be 30 feet 3 inches. Fish goes through the center of the cone, the sonar will show the fish going from 30’3” to 30’ back to 30’3”…..thus drawing the cone. The deeper the fish the greater the arch. If the fish doesn’t go through the center the flatter the arch. In shallow water it will be a line. If the fish goes through the edge it may be just a dot. The size of the fish is determined by the thickness of the arch with larger fish absorbing more of the signal. Larger fish often have a different color center in the arch. The length of the arch is determined by how quick the fish leaves the cone. It could be boat speed, chart speed, width of cone where the fish is located, and where in the cone did the fish pass. Also a fish can’t make an arch if he is 6 feet deep in a 30 ft. cone. The distance the fish is from the transducer determines the arch.

    When you see those trees and fish on the side imaging . . .
    how can you tell how deep or shallow they are??
    how can you tell how far away you are from the fish??

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  3 роки тому +1

      It is hard to tell exactly how deep the fish ate in the water column with side imaging. A rule of thumb is the longer the shadow an image creates, the higher in the water colum it is. As for distance from the boat, you can use the toggle keypad to scroll over to the school of fish. On the top of the screen it will show how many ft(m) you are away from that school.

      I have an echomap 93sv and was planning on filming a series, like the humminbird series i filmed. Hopefully I can get it done before the lake freeze over. The humminbird videos I have should help atleast show what you're looking for on 2d, downvu, and sidevu for the Garmin. These units are pretty much the same when it comes to these views, the only thing that is different is the setup screens.

      When shooting docks a lot of anlgers use high vis line so they can see soft bites. We were using 10lb braid, which may have been part of the reason we didn't get has many bites. I have found that crappie don't mind braid line in most areas. I have fished with a number of guides that will use 20 or 30lb braid for crappie almost all the time.
