I found one of these growing in the woods by my house a few months ago, so I took a cutting and propogated it into 4 cuttings. It's been doing extremely well recently, and sprouting out a ton of new leaves! The reddish color it gets in the shade is such a nice complement to the velvet~
@@kaliphaneuf7249 apparently there’s a plant called “Swedish Ivy” that is basically an invasive weed here that we call “creeping Charlie.” I’m not sure if there’s a different cultivar that’s sold as a houseplant.
They're endemic to Eastern Mexico. It makes sense that it could survive wild in Florida. Someone must have had theirs outdoors and had a piece stolen by an animal. You just got lucky to find it wild. Hope it's going strong. I just got one yesterday.
Woo hoo I just found this in an arrangement at Walmart and I had to get it. I love the velvety feel and shimmery bronze color. I was so excited to find it and am so happy to see this video about them. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
I got a few cuttings from a friend. After now slightly more than 3 weeks they are finally starting to grow roots. I love the leaves so much and can't wait to plant them hopefully soon.
One of my absolute favorite species. I've had mine for two years and this plant goes on my most recovered list. When I moved to Florida I set it outside and it actually began to die from being scorched and not properly acclimated outside. It got as low as one stem and two leaves open. So I split it and it took almost a year, but it is on the mend.
One of my favorites of all time. I found these in my nursery for $8 each, so I picked up like 6 of them. One of them is climbing up a moss pole beautifully!
I would love to find this again. About 10 years ago, I was given a mixed plant basket, and it was in there. Love the velvety texture. Mine had more of a heart shaped leaf, and tended to drip water off the leaf pounts if overwatered. I very stupidly discarded it... and now, I keep an eye out for it again.
I have been searching for this everywhere on Internet, velvety money plants, money plant shaped plant which is dark green, n what not, finally I got it!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Eventually I want this plant, have to make sure I have the right growing conditions. Loving this series, so much information and great tips. Thank you Summer.
I was worried at first about hederacium because it was putting out smaller leaves, but not long after it found its footing and has basically produced a wall of leaves in a few months time beautifully draping down. I bought 3 smaller plants and placed them all in a medium/ large sized pot. Summer is spot on with the heavier soil because they don’t seem to mind being good and wet for periods of time, and give ME time to neglect them for a week at a time at least.
P.S...Can the scientific community STOP updating the names. First Sansevieria are now Dracaenas. And I know this plant as Velvet Leaf Macin Philodendron.
I find it far more leggy than other varieties of Philodendron Hederaceum (Scandens/Brasil), but leggy in a good way, unlike scindapsus which look horrible when they get leggy, this just looks elegant and delicate
One of my favorites for at least 20 years. However, they've disappeared from local garden centers/nurseries here in NH and MA. Most web sites say they're "out of stock" too. Anyone know of sources for them?
I'm horrible at picking off the sun spots. Which leave holes in my leaves 😅😂

I have gold spots on my micans like u do on yours. Looks like a little scratch. I took them Out of soil and put them in water…could that be why? Is that normal For the leaves to have those gold scratches ?
For some time now, I've wondered why plant gurus always say to cut the amount of fertilizer in half of what the manufacturer recommends. I would assume that the manufacturer bases the recommended amount on some research of their own (like the MSU fertilizer). So, I'm confused about whether to follow the manufacturer or experienced plant people. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Much better to cut the amount of fertilizer instead of following the recommended doze. It is much better to prevent root rot from over fertilizer that will kill plants due to i think of some reasons. First not all plants are the same, next the condition of soil or fertilizer in the soil could be changed soil or not repotted soil when purchased and due to these, there could have been fertilizer in it or just been fertilized. In case of plants under our care of year/s, much better to change with rich soil/medium with then again when fertilize should be lesser ones otherwise will burn the roots. Also the salt build up from nutrients from fertilizer in the soil would hurt the plant
Mine has a few white spots on them. Do you think its due to underwatering? I was concerned with the legginess of mine and thought it was due to not getting enough light. I have it hanging from my wall near a window but I think its still a gray area. What are your thoughts?
Hi Summer. I had question about peace lily in few days ago and I though you might can't check on comment by video Ep 118. Houseplant 101: Houseplant Home Makeover! back by now. Sorry for asking in here again :-) Well, I was bought peace lily a week ago and I put it on bookcase where close to east facing glass window but in behind sheer curtain. Now it still dry season which is hot in room. I worry about my peace lily which is getting not well now. It that too much light for peace lily? and it that too hot? What should I do? Thank you for advice :-) And sorry for asking wrong plant in topic here :-(
My hederaceum also has those little holes and i know others who have them too, is this just what happens to the leaves as they get older or or there something that causes this?
Zenobia I would like to know as well. I thought that in my case that maybe it was from when it was transported to the nursery as the leaves are very fragile, but some of my plant’s newer leaves are starting to develop those tiny holes. Can’t find any info on them.
the leaves on my hederaceum are releasing tiny oozy (sticky) droplets all over.. I don't see any pests or anything on the plant, and I can't find any information on this anywhere! If anyone has any pointers/advice let me know.
Hi! I don't know about pests that could cause that. If it's water and it's just droplets at the ends of the leaves it's getting rid of the water excess like other houseplants by "sweating". If they're kind of dense and (for what I've read) at the back of the leaves, it's a sort of nectar that they release in order to attract potential pollinators, you can just wipe them gently, I hope this helps. :) Edit: I just read you typed "sticky" so most probably the second. I'll post here the Instagram post I read this on if I can find it.
As I understand it the velvety form is not a cultivar, but just a different wild form of the hederaceum. But in that case I do find it a bit strange that there isn't a specific name for this form.
i like how you can't petting it aha, thanks for the vid. I have a "heartleaf philodendron", google tells me it's the same plant but it's not, can anyone clarify this? My latin is rusty..
Alex there's the normal green leaf heartleaf philodendron, the lemon lime variety which is bright green, the brasil which is dark with a green stripe and this one from the video
Thank you Summer Rayne for the amazing videos and for spreading your knowledge to all of us. I love your videos, but you repeat the word "actually" a lot, and that sometimes steals my attention from the content. Keep up the good work and greetings from Finland :)

They were so hard to find here in Germany but are slowly popping up in Dutch online shops. Still a rarity though 😅
