TERESA PARKER hey Teresa! Hoping I can learn from your wisdom/experience. I just received a Hoya obovata in the mail bare root. The plant came packaged beautifully, was potted in an airy soil and bottom watered once since it was received 1 week ago...but today I woke up and the plant had completely defoliated other than one top leaf (lost around 5). It is in a south facing window pulled back 2 feet with a semi-sheer curtain blocking the direct light (our light is also not that great in the winter so it is closer now than I would place it in the summer). Is this normal behavior? The roots looked amazing upon initial inspection. Did I do something wrong (other than ordering plants online during the winter)? And yes, it was shipped with a heatpack. Feeling like a Hoya killer...thanks for your help!

My hoyas are very trailing/climbing with heavy waxy leaves. They are all from one original plant, so they are all the same species, whatever that is! Most have an east exposure and these started to bloom when I was misting my Monstera and crotons and got some mist on the Hoya leaves. Once it bloomed those pretty two-toned pink flowers, I figured out the magic sauce was the misting! I mist the leaves daily and it blooms year-round! I am glad to hear that letting the pots dry out between watering is best. I never realized the epiphytic nature of these plants until I watched your video. Good info! Thank you!
I'm absolutely in love with hoya plants. Can't wait to start adding more into my collection. I only have the hoya australis right now. So many neat varieties thank you for sharing such a great video! This is extremely helpful❤
Thank you for your very informative video. I have a Hoya that I grew from a cutting a friend gave me over 30 years ago. For most of these years it was in a room with east facing windows . It grew nicely but never bloomed. Then 7 years ago I moved and the plant was in an even darker room for a year until I moved into the apartment that I am now. The Hoya is now at an south facing window , very bright , but direct sun only early morning and late afternoon. Wow, from 2 yrs ago and I just found it.......lol Perfect timing as we just got back into our hometown. We bought one of these (carnosa I believe) when we moved into our last home in 1996. We found it at a yard sale and it was quite large compared to the ones you showed here. It was in a ceramic pot and the man had started it the previous summer when his wife passed away and it was something she had been doing at the time. Anyway, he told us all about when they had found it 50 years before and that he still enjoyed it. He said if I could get it to bloom I'd be 'joyfully surprised'.....it finally bloomed after about 7 years or so. The blooms didn't even look real. I took pictures and nobody would believe it was a real plant. It sat outside our greenhouse on the plant tables. I don't have any pictures to share as, sadly, we lost our home and everything inside and out, (we did get our cat) in the Camp fire of 11/08/2018. Actually, it was our home, street, neighborhood, town and surrounding communities. A bit challenging times right now but I so enjoyed this. Thank you so much for all the knowledge you share. It's nice to be my age (70) and be able to learn so much about plants. We have a lot of plants to replenish in our home!..seriously, thank you again. remember to breathe........
I love these videos because I'm learning so much. I had a hoya in the 90's, it won first place in our local fair. I moved and had to give her away. Hoya will be one of the next plants I get.
Hello Summer, thank U for the clear repotting instruction. Over the years I found I have that many plants and don't know what to do with them. Most are grown in hanging baskets with a water holding base. They grow so well and are huge. The pots get so heavy with all the tendrils cascading over the sides. The ones with the huge leaves seem to have very small flowers and the common canessa have fairly good size clumps of pink flower. They all in my back patio where they the filtered pm sun. I am now overwhelmed by quantity of plants just from 2-3 cuttings. Not many seem to like growing them because they are not showy like petunias. Thank U. Mary from Queensland, Australia.
I have a Hoya that is close to 50 years old as far as I'm aware, it was my great grandmothers Hoya. And I repotted it last year and it have never looked better! This was a lovely video! I've been growing hoya for 20 years. It's pretty much all I grow. Though, I only have about 30 varieties, I like the leaves more than the flowers. I'm also fortunate enough to live in Los Angeles, so most of my hoya are kept on my apartment balcony. I do a lot of the same care routines, from the orchid fertilizer to the soil mixture! That's cool!
Very good to hear you treat them similarily! And lucky you in LA. I'm here now for the LA Plant Swap and I love seeing some of our "indoor plants" growing outdoors here :)
Just got my first Hoya krimson queen and am so glad you mentioned the stems appearance and what not to cut due to eventual blooming. Thank you for sharing your expertise. 💕🌿
Just watched this video so glad u mentioned the stem appearance looked after watching video and I have blooms ! This is my 1st and only hoya its 2yrs old. I cant wait till ahe blooms THNXS❣️
Your video was a major blessing. I was given a rooted hoya by a friend about 10 years ago. I knew nothing about them so I planted mine in a really large container. BIG MISTAKE! It has grown until it looks like a jungle unto itself and just began to bloom (sparsely) about 3 years ago. I now understand that I can prune my plant to a manageable size and root cuttings to share with friends. Had I known earlier I could have donated some to a local animal shelter for their annual fund raising event. Oh well, next year.
I went to my local butcher shop to purchase dog food and they have so many large, old plants. Today they gave me some hoya cuttings. I'm so excited because it's my first hoya and I'm so glad I watched this video. I'm a huge fan of your channel. You're video's are so informative!
I now have two Hoya! A carnosa compacta (not variegated), and a carnosa Krimson princess. Plus my coworker gave me permission to take a cutting from her 15yo Hoya (not sure of the variety yet), so the tips in this video are incredibly helpful!
I had no idea what a Hoya plant was when I got it. I bought home the Hoya Carnosa Princess and was in love with the variegation of the leaves. Not only was it beautiful to look at but it was so easy to take care of. I feel in love with hoyas after that one plant. Now I have Hindu rope, Krinkle, variegated Hindu rope, obavato, variegated wayetti, jade and sheperdii. Of course I want more! Thank you for making this video! Such great information!
I have become a Hoya obsessor! I LOVE them, and YOU have the best videos. I have subscribed and given a Thumbs up. I bought two 4” pot carnosa compactas, put them in one 6” pot and over the past year have watched them grow a bit, and ALL OF A SUDDEN, this plant has tripled in size. It’s magnificent, along with my Krimsons and Carnosas. I live in Florida and have loads of plants in my sunroom and my open floorplan house. It looks like a nursery! I have been giving away so many cuttings from my Pothos plants to make room for my Hoyas which, again, I am obsessed with. They are quite magnificent! Thank you for your marvelous video.
I’m so very glad I found a lovely young woman as yourself that has interests outside of phone internet etc. I tell a lot of people about you and your knowledge of plants. My next purchase will be your new book, love from Texas!
Finally after watching this video, I could identify the hoya which was collected from a roadside tree two years back. It's hoya ovalifolia!! May be the only hoya with a wavy leaves.
Wow. Seriously the best, most thoughtful, well organized and clear video I’ve seen on Hoya care. Can’t wait to get my first one now and practice all I’ve learned! 😍🌱
You’re the best. I have a H Kerrii that is several years old and the length of the vine is too long. After watching your video I feel READY and Excited! Thanks.
Hi thanks so much for the tips about hoyas. 5 years ago had a cutting of Hoya & became a jungle & throw away cuz moved to new house. Had 1 cutting left in 1 corner & totally neglected it, endured fire (So Cal), snail & deer,& now got 10 sets of flowers. I’m confident to start rooting & repotting. Thanks. You’re the best.
I am growing Hoya Carnosa variegata, Macrophylla and Kerii for now. Will look for other types and cultivars. I fall in love with them coz of your video 😊
i recently started my Hoya collection after having a carnosa which was a rescue pllant for many months doing nothing, not one leave until i transpanted to smaller container that started to shoot new leaves. Now i have a crimson queen, H. Elliptica, H. Rosita, H.Mathilda splash, H. Bilobata. so far am enjoying them. My Carnosa seem to keep getting milly bugs but controlled for now. thanks for your videos.
I love my Hoya Carnosa. She is so beautiful. I had her in our old house and she never bloomed there 10 yrs. I repotted her and moved her in a South window and she loves it here in my bedroom ,flowering currently. Such a gorgeous plant...and the fragrance is just lovely.🌿🌸💚
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been searching for this info all over the web and your video gave me all the info, education and visual I was looking for. I will try to make this short. My father gave me cuttings from his hoyas that I had for over 25 years. Beautiful plants, but never bloomed until my father passed away. That year I got one bloom and then the plants died. Spooky right? Anyway, a relative had also received cuttings from my father's plants. When she heard my story she immediately started propagating her hoyas for me. I now have 6 plants to start and wanted to do it right. Your video has given me the hope that this part of my father will continue to grow!❤
Happy to discover Your Channel. I love hoyas so much that I started my collection this year with some old given by friends and 4 brand new one. I've also made my own soil mixture similar to Yours. Thank You for all Your knowledge and so many advises 🌸🌱
Just got my first Hoya (krimson) and immediately came to see if you had a Hoya video. Thanks for always putting out such informative and thorough videos!
You sure are well spoken ,I really appreciate your knowledge and your honesty when you don't know something, thank you very much again I'm the 75 year old , been involved with orchid societies and proceeded as an officer in them and that's where I kind of started getting off into my various Epiphytes and I also have many air plants, enjoy them much especially as I get into my senior years, thanks again appreciate your wonderful videos ,hope you grow and that the UA-cam channel can be a little bit of a benefit financially, you are at least to pay for your ,Thank you bye bye
I looked at your blog and realised for the first time that your name, your green credentials, are very deeply rooted. I've been growing collecting and raising plants from seed since I was about ten years old and so have some of the same obsessions. If only we could post some of our questions as guest authors on your blog.
Hoyas are my absolut favorit plants, after I probegated a broken stem. Normally I didn't buy plants with flowers because of my husband and I have allergies. But found out that many of my flowering plants don't give us allergies like begognia, that I also like alot.
I love your personal jungle,I'm a plant lover and is good to know something new about plants!!..I started recently likes Hoyas plants...you explain really good....;)
I love your video. So detailed! I have what my granddaughter calls a 'Hindu Rope Plant'. I was graced with it from a popular, local restaurant which thought I was deserving of a 'snippet'. That was over 2 years ago. I think I planted it upside-down initially, then turned it around and replanted it. Still no growth beyond a 3rd leaf. From your video, I have learned I've likely been overwatering it and have it in direct sun and need to move it! Thank you so much!!
I'm only just beginning my Hoya journey. They have been selling like crazy here in the area of Phoenix, Arizona. I currently have 10 types and look forward to their blooms. I'm hoping to one day get a cutting of my grandmother in law's Hoya. Thank you so much for your instruction and passion for plants!
I just got my first hoya carnosa. I got it from a big box store, so I had to change the soil because it was holding too much water. Thank you for this video! So helpful!
I received a large hoya carnosa clipping with large roots on it today! I bought it come and immediately cute another propagation off of it. I can not wait to see it root!!! My first hoya and only my 8th plant!
I have had a Hoya Wayettii for about 2 years. It’s a fantastic plant that blooms regularly in the summer and fall inside my house. I haven’t propagated it yet because I just hate to cut it ! Lol thanks for all the great info in all of your videos.
I've been rooting hoya cuttings from my neighbors hoya to build up mine. Its working well. I recently obtained a curly hoya and can hardly wait until its large enough to propagate. Very cool plant. I had one that bloomed once years ago. The flowers smell like nothing else and are so pretty.
My passion for that type of plant just grew few weeks ago, I recently bought 2 hoya krimson princess (the first one was indicated as a queen but I found out it was a princess after), found that queen last week so bought 1 krimson actual queen as well, 1 carnosa, 1 carnosa compacta (hindu rope), 1 bella variegata, 1 curtisii and 1 pubicalyx. Just enjoy Hoya's leaves so much and can't wait to smell and see their bloom !! 🥰🌿🌸 I'm still searching for a variegated hindu rope... These informations are very helpful ! Thanks for the video, LOVE KIPPEE 🐔🤎
Thank you for such a great explanatory video! I just de-tangled my Hoya (or "Porslinsblomma"/Porcelain flower as we call it), and oh my god it is 4,3 meters long. Got it from my grandmother! I have no idea how old it is. But I'm not going to wrap it up in a loop again, I think I'm going to put it my bookshelf and let the vines hang, and hopefully it will manage. Thank you so much for the inspiration 😍 Lots of love, Louise from Sweden

If it grows that long just hanging, it could weigh so much that it pulls itself off the shelf. The pot, soil roots and trunk of my huge Hoya Carnosa weighs less than the mass of 10 to 15-feet long vines.
i got mine from home depot, a giant piece of hindu rope that got knocked to the ground. it was healing & getting settled in all last year & just put out a giant tendril :) the new growth is mottled deep purple, its very pretty!
How come the end of the tendrils sometimes dry back? Is that a sign I need to water a bit more? Knowing the like to dry between waterings I’m afraid to water too much.
Once again, your video was packed with valuable information. I've learned so much to help me take better care of my hoyas and all of my epiphytic plants. Thank you, Summer Rayne! 🌱💚🏵️
Thanks so much. I have found the Hoya plants are really easy to propagate but I have always used potting mix not water. After seeing your roots in the water I'm using that method from now on. Also the potting mix you suggested is what I will use from now on. Thanks!
I love hoyas. I have a few of the ones shown.. and I just bought a variegated hindu rope hoya. You have such great information and explain everything very well. You showed a Hoya Bella... I think I'll have to get that one, too! Great videos.. thank you!
I have just started my Hoya adventure. Inner gardens in Malibu gifted me a cutting of a Hoya Kerii which I water-propagated. I’m OBSESSED. Thank you so much for this video. You literally just answered all the questions I had. ❤️
Just received a Hoya Crimson Queen as a gift for my birthday! Thank you for all of the tips and tricks! Perhaps I can thank my sister with her own hoya made from cuttings from the plant she just gave me.
I've just started on Hoyas. I bought some of the most common. H. cumingiana (my very first), H. pubicalyx (which the seller is not sure if a red dragon or a black dragon), H. carnosa, H. buotii, H. mindorensis and another one I forgot. So I'm still studying about the proper care and best potting mix to use. Among them, H. cumingiana I bought in a very tightly packed soil from a seller, which was commented upon by another seller who said that I can put charcoal underneath the pot when I transplant it so it wouldn't be too heavy and compacted. Thank you for the basic info!!! And I hope other planters can reply to my comment on the better potting media they use for each species I mentioned. I also just bought some media: pumice stones, vermicasts and coco peat. I will try to make my own mix and see what works. :D
Tried to avoid Hoyas before, and just kept one Hoya mindorensis. But your videos (and others) inspired me to embrace what my friends have gone all “Pokemon” for (gotta catch them all). After a few months, now I have nearly 80 plants comprised of over 3 dozen species and varieties. A dozen more soon to arrive.
Hello, Thank you so much for this video. I have subscribed and hit the bell. I have been wanting a hoya for years.... decades actually, since I saw my neighbors about 30 years ago. The flowers were amazing and they're sent was glorious. Your video will help me find one that is good for me and the plant.
Of course, I was gifted a crimson princess cutting - and I love it. I started looking more, and absolutely fell in love with the fish tail hoya - I don't think I'll ever find one, but it's a wish list plant. My love for aquatic life and plant compels me to obtain one some day!
This is the first time I have watched a video of yours. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us all. Very well done! I am becoming a collector of Hoya!
I’m having trouble propagating Hoya in water. I’m now trying propagation in regular potting soil because I did not see your video in time. Hopefully I will eventually see some roots. Thank you!
i love this video it was so helpful to hear more information about hoyas!! i got a hoya carnosa about 2 weeks ago and it put out new buds and I'm so excited for all the new leaves!
Awesome video; I love hoyas! I just potted 15 well-rooted cuttings of "Hindu Rope" in a terra cotta azalea pot. They look fabulous, and they're putting out new growth 2 weeks later! Peace. :)
Quite new to keeping house plants and only got my first Hoya a couple of weeks ago. I’ve certainly been hooked on them and now have three and looking for more. It’s now the first thing I look for when I go to a garden centre and am disappointed if they don’t have any! Thanks for the video. I found it very helpful for my ongoing Hoya journey💚
I have never owned a Hoya. I'd never even seen one in person until today! I saw a Hoya Carnosa Crimson Princess in a hanging pot at WalMart for $15 it was beautiful😍😍. I have heard that hoyas are prone to mealy bugs. I have about 30 plants to keep track of, none have had any pests except fungus gnats. I was always terrified of hanging plants because of what could be under them🤣. So I start all my hangers with a 2-4 inch pot so I can carefully check them. I know, prob sounds crazy but I am not afraid of the ones I've grown myself. (Pothos, philodendrons and tradescantias are my faves). But that Hoya oh boya I may have to start small. I think I'm in love 💘
This video is very well done. You clearly are very passionate about Hoya's and demonstrate and excellent knowledge of their systematics and their cultivation. Well done this is excellent content. Please keep it up!
Awesome video, I have one Hoya Carnosa that is growing rapid and in a lovely way, a friend gave some leaves last year but it was not a successed but I didn't give up, I repot it in a small pot and different soil and now they have some new leaves. Those one didn't like the terracotta pot so I repotted them on plastic and it has a success. I am so happy, I hope one day in the close future they can bloom. Now I am propragating some in water and soon I will repot them. ;) Thanks for all the great information.
Great plants! They are like the "peperomia" of my collection. No fuz and can take some time with no pampering. Have had an awful lot of problem with my poor peperomias so this is one of my best choices for "low maintenance" plants!
The first time I saw a Hoya was around 7 years ago, what caught my eye was the flower 🥰😍 I called it an alien plant before I found out what it actually was. I of course tried to propagate it asap & was successful & today I have maybe 5 & have only seen 2 of them flower. They’re definitely a very slow growing plant.
iddybiddyladybug Leeza The reason they don’t bloom is because they need to be put through at least six weeks of very cool temperatures like 45 and darkness it’s like a Christmas cactus you have to force them to bloom I had one for 26 years never bloomed but then I found out it Hass to be put through dormancy

I have had my hoya for two decades. It hasn't bloomed in quite some time. I will be using some of these tips for sure!
I now have two Hoya! A carnosa compacta (not variegated), and a carnosa Krimson princess. Plus my coworker gave me permission to take a cutting from her 15yo Hoya (not sure of the variety yet), so the tips in this video are incredibly helpful!
This is the best hoya care video out there. Thanks for filming and sharing this very informative hoya care guide.
This video came at the perfect time, as I received two hoyas in the mail yesterday. Thanks and many blessings.
Very glad it came at a good time for you.
Very glad you liked the video. Thanks for tuning in Cecilia!
You’re the best. I have a H Kerrii that is several years old and the length of the vine is too long. After watching your video I feel READY and Excited! Thanks.
Starting hoya just now and you are very helpful! I have been staying up late watching your videos thank you for sharing your passion.
I was just gifted a 25 year old Hoya and I’ve never had one before. Thanks for all the info! I am looking forward to giving this plant a fresh start.
I just got my first hoya, a carnosa Hindu rope in a 4 inch pot. I hope it grows as beautiful as yours. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial.
I have 12 Hoya's. I love them so much. Thank you for this! You're such a joy to watch 😊
Thrilled that you found use in the video.
Very professionally done! I love how you have everything planned out and ready to go. Thanks for the tips!
The Australis Hoya Lisa is fabulous ♡
I just got my first hoya carnosa. I got it from a big box store, so I had to change the soil because it was holding too much water. Thank you for this video! So helpful!
Glad you enjoyed! You can withhold water for your carnosa for about 4-5 weeks in springtime. That will help it to flower.
Hi Paul are your wayetti flowers fragrant?
Erika Brown Not that I’m able to detect.
Just started my Hoya collection. Because of your videos. They go beautifully with my orchid collection 🤗
Thank you so much for the inspiration 😍
Lots of love,
Louise from Sweden
So thrilled that you appreciate the content. Thank you for letting me know!
One of the most helpful video about Hoya plants thank you so much 😊
Thanks so much. I have found the Hoya plants are really easy to propagate but I have always used potting mix not water. After seeing your roots in the water I'm using that method from now on. Also the potting mix you suggested is what I will use from now on. Thanks!
I've talked to a lot of collectors and rooting in water is usually their go-to. You're very welcome on everything else. Thanks for tuning in!
I love hoyas. I have a few of the ones shown.. and I just bought a variegated hindu rope hoya. You have such great information and explain everything very well. You showed a Hoya Bella... I think I'll have to get that one, too! Great videos.. thank you!
So glad you found value in the video. Thanks for watching!
I luv the fan in the ceiling, helps me focus
I'm so thankful for this video as I can't get enough of Hoyas! Also, I'm obsessed with your home, just gorgeous & tons of character!
I just bought mr first hoya. Thanks for this video-you covered everything I need to know to grow successfully.
I get my hoya cuttings from my grandma and your video helped me a lot, cant wait to grow them🥰 ily
hahah same! I also get my hoya kerrii cuttings from my grandma 👵🏻 🥰
Just started growing Hoya. I have 3 plants and I love them!
Why is she THAT perfect? 😍😍😍
You are the best tutor so far i find👍😄. Hoya is my favorite plant! Thank you for sharing.
Great Video❤️Love Hoyas, just started with them. I have 7 under the tree. So far so good. Love the soil mixture u use.
Thank you for sharing these information. Learning a lot from you. Just started to collect Hoyas this year and I soooo love them.
Hello,
Thank you so much for this video.
Love these new long and educational videos. Thanks for sharing 💚
So glad you can appreciate them Kathy.
Fantastic! Have fun blooming it. And thanks for tuning in.
Hoyas and Peperomias are my absolute favorites!!!
glad I was able to cover both genera!
After such an extensive tutorial I’m now going to get my own Hoya. Thanks for being so instructive.
Awesome video; I love hoyas! I just potted 15 well-rooted cuttings of "Hindu Rope" in a terra cotta azalea pot. They look fabulous, and they're putting out new growth 2 weeks later! Peace. :)
Fantastic!
Those shears are GORGEOUS!
I've yet to see one in person BUT it looks like The Hoya Bella Is Bellissima !!! If so I'M Going To NEED One Or Two!!!
Summer, Great informative video on growing Hoyas! Thank you. I learned so much with your video.
I love that pot you used, reminds me of a tree fern "trunk"
This video is very well done. You clearly are very passionate about Hoya's and demonstrate and excellent knowledge of their systematics and their cultivation. Well done this is excellent content. Please keep it up!
Just got my first Hoya baby yesturday! it's a lil Hoya Carnosa Compacta! so excited
Hi im from philippines i love to see your vlogs about hoya i love it thank for your vlogs of hoya!
I always go back and forth in your channel, you really give us great plant tips and advises 💚💚💚 thank you summer!!
Now I am propragating some in water and soon I will repot them. ;)
Thanks for all the great information.
Great plants! They are like the "peperomia" of my collection. No fuz and can take some time with no pampering. Have had an awful lot of problem with my poor peperomias so this is one of my best choices for "low maintenance" plants!
Mathilda Klinger Danielsson glad you find joy in Hoya
Got a cutting of a Hoya last year from a friend and it is doing well. I placed it outside and it shot out some new growth 🌱
Great video! Thanks.
I use the same potting mix and add worm castings.
Enjoy your day!
Gerry
😎
HPE Teacher glad some synergies
