    This is one of my favourite philodendrons to own. I started with a single vine cutting and I now have 5 pots full of it. In Australia, it’s available in supermarkets and really cheap/highly common. I have 2 pots with moss poles in my office and to see the light hit it, it’s absolutely magical. The top of the leaf has a shimmer and the back has a pink blush. For me it grows like a weed, even in winter, so I’m very fortunate, but I have big north and south facing windows so it gets a lot of light. In my experience, water propagations are almost 100% success rate. One trick I found I need to do, is properly allow the plant to dry out between watering (mine are all in my aroid soil mix). That means I only water it when it’s fully dry for 3-4 days. Otherwise, imo it just doesn’t seem to do quite as well. And as a trailing plant if you put 10-15 cuttings in a single pot, it’s a real head-turner when you put it on a wall, or shelf so it can be allowed to grow long. A great plant for beginners, at least here in Oz where it’s very easy to pick up.

      Amazing, yeah I should have mentioned that too, the shimmer is real!!! Also completely agree on letting it go fully dry it does really respond well to that! 😊💚🌿

      I'm in New Zealand and I think it grows like a weed too, I got two leaves, two nodes, this time last year. I now have a many, many vined plant up a moss pole, I've accidentally decapitated a couple of vines so have propagated those, and it's about to reach the top of the pole for the second time. It's not quite as common here, you occasionally see it in bunnings and the like now but it's definitely readily available. And I too think it's one of my very favourite philodendrons! The absolute beauty when you have small plants in a prop box, and they grow perfect leaves never touched by nature nor person - these leaves are some of my favourite ever. If only they stayed as perfect when you take them out!

    I noticed that if I give my Micans high indirect light it grows slowly. When I moved mine into medium light it took off.

      Ohhhhhh I might try one of mine in medium light then and see maybe that will help it speed up, awesome tip ☺️🙌🙌🙌

      I think it may just be growing conditions. Because mine is in high indirect light and its a monster. Haha I have chopped and propped it so much and its is still growing like a weed.

    Very interesting to see that the Micans growth rate varies so much for different peoples conditions. For me, the Micans is an outstanding plant. Mine is by far my fastest growing plant, easily outgrowing all of my epipremnum varieties (including golden and jade). It grows at the same rate for me in bright light, medium light and low light. I had to trim it 3 times during winter!! However I do find that when I prop it, although it has been a 100% success rate, it takes longer to root out than a lot of others. I know a lot of people say that the Brasil grows ridiculously fast for them, but mine doesn't. It grows fine, but not a fraction as quick as my Micans, so I wonder if they like slightly different conditions.
    My Review (my experience after 12 months in my conditions)
    * Massive 5 Stars
    * Incredibly fast growth rate
    * Readily available
    * Cheap as chips
    * Easily propagated
    * 0 pest pressures (touch wood)
    * Incredibly easy care

      Yeah it never ceases to amaze me what a difference in conditions from person to person might make with most plants. Its great to hear you have had such an awesome experience with it. Also it is so encouraging to see these have slowly become easier to find!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

      @@holyarmadillo3424 honestly I wish I could share some sort of tip with you. But in reality mine has grown pretty much the same no matter what it's conditions have been. I've had it in direct light, bright light, low light. I usually let it dry out almost completely. When I've forgotten and it's been dry a little too long, it has just killed off 1 or 2 leaves and not thrown any kind of tantrum afterwards. Interestingly though, my Brasil doesn't have the same growth rate as the Micans and it has the same conditions and care. It still does very well, but my Micans grows 4 times faster!

      I do well with Hoya, Aeschynanthus and Scindapsus types, but not as well with Calathea or Ferns. They don't usually die on me, but they usually don't have that wonderful thriving look and definitely grow slower for me than other people

    My Micans gave me a headache for the first year. It has mellowed out as it established. I’ve grown it 5+ feet a couple of times and gave it several big chops. Currently in terracotta, chunky aroid soil. Sits right in front of a SE window that gets morning and mid day sun. Tolerates drier conditions and my 50-60% beach humidity fine. Does not like high temps. I tried growing it outside a couple of times over the summer and it just wilts even in the shade. Super easy to propagate and you are right- I’ve never seen one in a garden center ever.

    I’m glad you talk about challenges and being enamored with a plant. I’m pretty sure I have a Micans that was given to me by a kind shop owner when I complemented her plants. It’s doing pretty well, but I have other plants that I enjoy more. I like it when collectors talk about enjoyment and whether it’s worth keeping long term. I have a tendency to collect things just because they were given to me, and I appreciate when people ask if it’s worth it for them 💜

      Awww, I glad i am not the only one that enjoyment of a plant is important too, I am the same i do have some plants that never gave me any joy, and others i lose joy for, but they serve a purpose too, for example giving them to other friends so they can bring them joy... also doesnt hurt that it releases space for other plants 😅😅😅😅😅

    Micans is my absolute favorite plant of all the plants I have. It’s one that I searched high and low for all last spring/summer at any place that sold plants and was able to find a 4in pot for $30 about an hour and a half from where I lived. This spring/summer i have seen it at least once at just about every plant shop near me, so definitely way more available now. I had mine in a west window and it did great there, some leaves did start to look a little damaged from the sun so I have it pulled back probably 15 ft from that window in a corner and it’s been doing great there as well. I’d say regular room humidity is fine and it can tolerate just about any lighting condition. I allow mine to dry out completely before watering but try not to let the leaves curl too much. I’ve only ever rooted single node cuttings in water but have had almost 100% success rate and they root pretty quickly. They def take much longer to start new growth but I feel like once they start they kind of take off. Def an easy one that everyone needs!

    last year i grew a pot of single leaf cuttings in aroid mix up a timber board under a strong growlight, i got maybe a metre of growth, sunstress/ blushed leaves which gradualy sized up somewhat, earlier this year i airlayered growth point cuttings from it and put them in lecca replacing there parent up the same board but with a weaker growlight, so far the leaves it puts out are much bigger and darker (which i'm likeing) albiet with longer internodes, not sure the best way but thats what ive experienced. Got tons of cuttings if my new planty nieghbour ain't got it she soon will! great plant thanks for the video👍

Agree with what you say about light, mine is under grow lights for 12-14 hours a day and loves it, I’ll be propagating soon to make some babies too! I got mine in December as a single leaf cutting and just cut it up last week so now I am propagating 8 single leave cuttings and the head cutting. As you mentioned it, not too fast growing but definitely a lot faster than the hederacium which just got three new leaves in the same time and same conditions. Oh and a huuuuuge thank you for your videos which are my go to’s every time I investigate on new plants.

    Living in the Netherlands, I'd also say it is neither common nor uncommon/rare. I'd put it a category I'd like to call 'fluctuating'. There are certain plants that just come in waves. You can tell a grower has unleashed its stock upon the market and the plant pops up in all garden centers, shops and online. And then you don't see it that much for some time.

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 роки тому

      That is such a good description, I hadn't thought about that but yeah fluctuating and coming waves is accurate for here too 😊

    2 years ago i purchased mine from Etsy for $35.00. I love this plant! I find that it likes to dry out before watering. I've had no pests but mine is inside. They can look a little spindly but with the beautiful velvety leaves I appreciate every leaf. Once it finds a spot that it likes it grows steadily although not as fast as other philodendrons. I like the little ones as much as the bigger ones. Its a dainty little plant and i have both of mine in Molly's aroid growing medium.

    I actually almost sold my micans before I just moved a couple of months ago. I sold quite a few plants that I didn’t love. Thankfully I did love the pot it was in and kept the plant haha! I’m glad I did. She is now hanging off to the side of an east facing window very much loving life at the moment. Growing as fast, if not faster than my heart leaf philodendron. She is only a year old and was started from a couple little cuttings. She is a full plant now. Although she did take a bit to get going. I have also taken many cuttings from her.

      I should also add that she hangs very close to a humidifier which is, I am sure the reason of her speed of growth!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah it really does enjoy some humidity, not a deal breaker like some ferns and calathea, but will definately like the extra humidity.

    Micans are one of my easiest plants, i currently have 2 pots and in the 6 months i had them they trippled/quadrupled in size . (i had a third, but i combined it to make the trailling pot look fuller)
    Even the pot that is trailing in darker light is constantly putting out new leaves. The other pot grew in a medium light and it got a lot longer, i had to wrap it up and down a trellis a few times to make it fit.
    I water them when the soil is dry, usually the older leaves curl a bit (i forgot a pot once and it looked very wilted but perked back up after 2 days) . Both are in a chunky aroid soil mix, i water them about 1 per week and fertilize every other week.
    This was one of the first plants i tried to water propagate, but my first attempt wasn't that great . I took props in the winter from damaged leaves and i think because of that i had a disadvantage from the start , resulting in new growth that was looking sickly.
    My second prop attempt is doing a lot better, the new leaves are healthy and adorable . I have to stop myself from taking props again, i don't have the space!
    (in Germany they are easy to find, usually for 10 to 20 euro)

    I have two clones of micans, one is the same as everyone's, the other is greener with larger leaves and thicker stem. I have them fornmore than a decade and both were found and roting cuttings in a botanical garden transhbin.
    They are amazing, the green grow even faster than the red version. And both grow faster than golden pothos. My setup is just an appartement with decent light but nothing exceptional, in Paris.
    For years I struggled to find new home for my cuttings and now after a very short fame they are again not popular anymore in my area.

      I'm not really proud it's extremly easy, i struggle with a lot of plants. Interstingly I think it's completly different from other velver leaf plants: it likes dry air, dry soil before waterings and i never had any pest on it.

    My micans experience has been getting one from the hardware store clearance rack that ended up having thrips- I shoved it in a dark bathroom to quarantine and it's been there ever since. 3 months in, it looks like there's no pests left, and even in less than ideal conditions it's stretched out- although leggy and sparse compared to what it could be. At least it's pest free and ready to chop and prop now?

    • @Houseplantygoodness

      Ohhhh definately a strict quarantine will help to avoid further thrips infection, but yeah if you can no longer see any thrips it should be good to move to its ideal position 😊💚🌿
