    Just to add clarification to new ball python owners, your snake will be more active in a new cage for about a week. Even if the husbandry is correct it is trying to figure out it's surrounding. Lastly ball pythons usually hide during the day and come out and are more active at night. I just open my window for sunlight the give my snake the ability to know day from night. He always comes out around 9pm. A hiding ball python is a happy ball python unless they never come out!

      This calmed me down a lot thank you! I recently got a new Mojave BP and she’s been searching around a lot at night but being calm and hiding in the morning/day. I thought this meant she was scared and wanted to leave her enclosure, but now I’m pretty sure she’s just being active at night :)

    You bring up some good points for causes of stress, not all l agree with. I do not myself claim to be an expert, l do not think there is anyone that is, l can only go by my own observations from several years of having snakes and observing them. The short of it is, snakes that are socialised with people will live stress free in captivity. Snakes left in an enclosure, fed and watered are certainly going to be stressed when a human goes near it or handles it. Snakes love being outside which is their more natural environment than their enclosure. Of course we who care for them and they trust is with them. All my snakes have hides and yet not all them use them, but it is definitely wise to have them available for your snakes. I hope you don't mind my opinion of this, l guess we all have varying views about our snakes.

    Pleaseee do a video all about humidity, maintaining it, setting up the terrarium, knowing how to get the exact humidity

    • @patrickobrien5311
      @patrickobrien5311 5 років тому +2

      For humidity control for ball pythons it helps to use a plastic tub, it's easier to keep humidity up versus a mesh lid terrarium. Also substrate can help. Cypress mulch, coconut husk, coconut fiber, and moss are great for maintaining a higher humidity for reptiles that require that.

    • @davidjr3769
      @davidjr3769 3 роки тому +1

      I use coconut substrate mixed with moss. I also have a humidifier right next to the terrarium. I keep it at 65% in the room which leaves the terrarium around 55-60% when the heat lamps are on.

    omg this video was so helpful, I just got a snake like 5 days ago and I was worried because all she did was sit in her hide and I thought her enclosure was a little cold and just all these other things I started to worry about but thank god she isn't stressed

      Hi, I just got a new snake and I'm worried about the same things that you were. Is your snake doing well now?

    • @Sparkatic
      @Sparkatic 2 роки тому

      @@isabellaemma6054 yeah turns out snakes don't do much but sleep all day. I'm guessing it's because they only eat every once in a while so they save their energy.
      -
      Only things that freaked me out sometimes was the first time she she'd and her eyes went white, during this time snakes also don't eat. I was also told she only ate live mice so my trick to feeding frozen was thawing and keeping the mice warm and then moving it around a bit with a long tool until she latched onto it.

    I believe that some ball pythons (especially young) can be way more active. My 5 months old baby loves to move around terrarium, climbing the glass, although he eats perfectly for me and never gets aggressive. I used to be stressed about it so much, but his environment is perfect so I figured out that it might be just his temper🤷🏿‍♀️

    Dont tap on glass
    Dont pick up without permission
    Dont pick up by his tail or head
    And be calm
    Dont leave lid off
    And don't touch the set up

    I am a new snake owner to my baby California king snake named Suko! I got her 4 days ago and I’m not handling her nor trying to harass her. My tank is a 25 gallon. I have the proper set up and correct humidity and heating. The 5th day I noticed she’s being very active and exploring her tank a lot. She’s also been coming up to the tank window and staring out or at me. I’m not sure if she’s stressed or just being active and happy. I know this breed of snakes are more active but I hope it’s not stress :(

    I was wondering if you could make a video or give an in dept answer on this: Can you take your snake outside on a hot day? Could you take them to the park or something because i have seen other You-tubers take their snakes out and they seem really happy and tend to like the outside world. So could you give me pros and cons for this.
    I would like to hear everyone's opinions on this particular subject.

    • @Gottalovecarpetpythons
      @Gottalovecarpetpythons 7 років тому +17

      gabija luki snakes absolutely love being outside and it does not stress them at all. Of course not a baby snake but a snakes of about 2 years, but you can certainly take a young snake out in a tub or hold it in the sun for a little while, the sun is good for them. No l would not take a snake out on a hot day like over 85, around 80 is fine and if it's going to be hotter, in the morning or late afternoon when it has cooled down is when to do it. I take my snakes outside and have been doing this for several years. I have 8 snakes and they are all happy and healthy. None have been sick or suffer from stress.

    I got my girl almost two years ago (she’s turning 2 this December) and I love her so much but I think she’s stressed... she acts hungry all the time even though I’ve done extensive research on feeding and know I’m doing all that right. She’s always been a good eater, and she’s always been exploratory - I call her Danger Noodle because she always seems to gravitate to the most adventurous places... she’s NEVER bitten a person and I’ve never heard her hiss.
    But she spends a lot of time just looking out of her hide, kind of halfway out. She only tracks movement sometimes and her tongue flicks seem normal, but she spends way too much time just looking outside in my opinion.
    I can sit with my face almost at the glass and she’ll just stare back at me and occasionally smell. She isn’t overhandled - I can barely find the time to take her out anymore as is between eating and digesting periods because by the time it’s ok to handle after eating she seems to be hungry again and I don’t want to agitate or confuse her by handling.
    I think my cat might be a problem? She likes looking into the tank and I’ve caught her laying on top of it several times... coconut has always been good with cats and my other cat is super chill to the point she’s alright with letting my snake touch her. My other cat (a year old) doesn’t want to hurt her, she just likes looking. She’s also completely untrainable and I CAN’T teach her not to go by the tank. All efforts seem to make her more interested.
    We had to put a wire rack on top of the tank because the cat lays on it and we didn’t want the mesh to collapse but now there are shadows like prison bars all the time... maybe that’s stressing her out? Or just the presence of our cats? I want her to have a perfect life and I really don’t want to choose her or the cats....

I am having trouble with humidity so might use a humidity box closer to shed time but he doesn't seem stressed.. when picked up again very active and toung flickering but no tension when being held just more curiosity than anything.. I realize this is an older video. I’m watching your channel for the first time so I don’t know how your style of editing may have changed since then. I just wanted to put a suggestion forward. When you are describing something that is central to the viewer understanding your point, consider adding B-roll or even stills into the video to help illustrate what you are talking about. It makes the video more visually interesting and helps with conveying your message. In particular I would have loved to see before and after footage/pics of the terrarium you modified to reduce stress levels. Thanks for the video!

    i just bought my first BP, and i have a couple of questions... :) 1e: the breeder told me, it was feeding him life baby rats and small mice... can i switch to frozen?
    2nd: My BP keeps climbing to the top of the terrarium, and sleeps there, rather in his 2 hidings, i provided him with, and 3rd, the breeder has fed him 7 days ago, and he wont eat my frozen baby rats.. should he not be hungry?? thanks for your advice!

    Could you do a video on feeding inside/outside of the terrarium and so, which one is better.

    I stopped handling my BP for a week cause I did it every day and he began wheezing and I finnally took him out today and hes not wheezing anymore and hes about to go into shed. So he gets another week away from me with the exception of his bath. Its killing me not being able to hold him a lot recently but it has to be done for his health so I'll do it.

    My corn snake is shedding in larger pieces but looks really wrinkly. I've been feeding him one frozen mouse a week but he looks emaciated. His water dish is full and he has multiple places to hide and some fake foliage and a heat lamp. Is he dying?? What's wrong?

    Hi I just bought my very first ball python yesterday and I have been binge watching your channel since I brought it home(haven't had it sexed yet so I'm just calling it BG for boy/girl). I was wondering if there is a way to tell how old my new baby is? I bought it from a pet store. Any other advice you could give about caring for it would be nice. I have a terrarium all set up nicely and plan on buying the hygrometer as soon as possible. I thought the thermometer I have already did both. BG is sharing a home with my Russian tortoise at this time, is that ok? Sorry I'm kind of going on a tangent there are just so many questions popping into my head and I want my BG to be safe and happy. Thank you in advance and I love your channel. The snakes you have are GORGEOUS!

    My corn snake hides all the time, I've only had her for 2 weeks now.. But whenever I go to hold her or pick her up she rattles her tail and quickly darts away as fast as she can. When I am able to pick her up, she is very jumpy and tense, and she breathes very heavily. She eats great but she seems very under socialized with humans. She is only a year old on estimate and she bit me two times the other night during handling. Does she just need more time to adapt to being handled, or what can I do to make this easier for her? I don't want to stress her out. (And yes, I have at least 2 hides in the enclosure at the moment and lots of fake plants in it as well to provide coverage for her.)

    I just brought a snake home from the pet store and he was perfect but now in home and he is kinda blowing. I called the store and they said it's probably because he is stressed from the ride home. He appeared very healthy so I hope it isn't because he is sick.

    I think I over handeled my snake she is a couple months old and was super sweet until I was handling her for a couple of hours and now since I put her back in her tank she striked at me and is now really defensive, what do I do? Will she go back to normal if I leave her alone for a couple weeks and just feed her?

    About a week ago it was feeding time for my snake (he’s a corn snake) but before I even got to take the mice out my snake had a seizure we called a vet and he told us it must’ve been from the past mice he ate and told us to put him off of eating for 2 weeks and handle him a lot because he is stressed. However, I don’t want to stress him out even more when I try to take him out. Also he always just stares outside the enclosure and kinda lays his head against the glass and there’s a little plastic thing he puts it on. Also he doesn’t move much throughout the day and usually half the time I could see him moving although sometimes I take a quick peak at night and he is moving then. Is this the behaviour to expect after a seizure?

    My baby corn (I've had him a month, but I think he's almost 2 months old) has escaped on me a few times (my fault I guess, cuz the enclosure lid wasn't on properly, and I have since learned), and I think he's chill mostly, but it stresses me out when I see him climbing the glass or interacting with walls... I have 6 hides for him in there now, as well as enough substrate to burrow, AND fake plants draped across all of the sides (to see him now I peak in with a flashlight). He has water, humidity is 30-50%, temps are good, and he eats. I feel like he's okay, but TLDR, if he has a history of escaping, and he's interacting with the walls, is he stressed? Or just curious and following his innate escape artist instincts?

    I JUST got 2 new ball pythons and of course, the first day, after being shipped from Miami to Arizona, my friend let my male loose in the car and after HOURS of searching, I found and had to PRY him out. Now he's doing everything you said (I started googling how to calm a stressed snake and found you) I left him alone for 24 hours and he's still striking and tightening up, so I'm taking your suggestions and leaving him alone. Knock on wood he'll be better in a week!

    Hi my snake, has been perfectly fine and eating, pooping and now shedding. But this was his first shedd with me and now the day after he is overactive in his cage. Is this normal or is he now considered stressed? Because he has a heatmat with thermostat so his "hotspot" is the temperature he needs.

    I just got a brand new young ball python. She hasn’t been in her tank for very long, only about a week now. But she is very active and it seems that she is always looking for a way out. I have a heating pad set at 90°F and a hide over that area, then I try my best to keep the rest of the terrarium around 80-85°F and I have a couple more hides in her tank as well. Its a 20 gallon and she is only about a foot maybe a foot and a half long. She isn’t showing me any other signs of stress, she doesn’t strike or hiss, she is really good with handling and she has been eating really well. But she is still so active and is always climbing to the top of her tank. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I can do to make her feel more at home? If anyone has any suggestions please help! Thanks !

    I just bought my new baby ball python last week, and only held her twice . Once to put her in her new enclosure, And once to hold her for a couple minutes. She seems perfect however both times holding her before putting her back she’s “yawned” I didn’t notice and extra saliva in her mouth but read in an article it could be a uri if she’s yawning a lot. It also mentioned it could be many things. Is this normal or should I be concerned? From what I’ve noticed she’s only done it twice.. I’m constantly checking on her but I did put a blanket over her exoterra so she feels more secure. One note to mention she has not eaten yet. I’m only concerned because I’ve never seen my Cali king yawn.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks love your Chanel!!!

    Jossers Jungle you said when Golden Girl went on a feeding strike she had too big of a terrarium. How big was it because I am getting a male ball python in a couple of weeks and I will keep him in a 30 gallon long his whole life. Is that too big? And if so will he go on a feeding strike?

    • @JossersJungle
      @JossersJungle  7 років тому +2

      A 30 gallon tank is a proper and very good size for a ball python to live in it's entire life. I would't worry about a feeding strike if you make sure the set up is correct and that he has at least two hides :-)

    Does anyone know why my bald python sleeps with his head propped on top of the hide at night as if he is looking up but head is resting on the hide, it’s a log hide if that helps, I’ve had him for 3 days.

    I have a beautiful baby killer bee with an attitude! She is young (4 months) and had a rough delivery to my home. She is timid and very afraid of being handled. She also strikes but it is all for show, she's never actually bitten me. How can I make her more social and calm? The vet praised the husbandry and also the steps taken to feed her the proper sized food (the breeder did not feed accordingly). She is still moody. What else can I do to make her love our family?

    I have a question
    I have a hatchling corn snake who has been in my house for 3 months now.
    Today I picked up my corn snake and he was very curious, his tounge was flickering and he seemed really fine.
    After a few minutes because I don’t hold my snake a lot or long, once a week I hold my snake.
    When I placed my snake back into his tank he didn’t want to stop moving and he wasn’t just sitting still like he normally did after being put back. He was going all around his tank. The tank is 10 gallon atm and his placed in my bedroom rn and His heating pad atm is 27 degrees Celsius. (80.6F)
    At night he roams a lot but it’s making me nervous since his BEEN moving during the day(after I put him back)
    I’m scared it’s stress but I really have no clue I’m really new to this and I did all my research but this is my first time experiencing such.
    Any tips of what is wrong and what I should do, or what to improve , or what I’m doing wrong.
