      Hey, if the worst I have to experience is a dragging plant sound (As opposed to barking or meowing or running around on hardwood floors all night), then I'd say that is still definitely a pro as far as pets are concerned.

    I think another pro for keeping Snakes is that they are hypnotizing in a way that they make you feel calm and relaxed when you handle them. They may even be good therapy pets for people since they’re so mesmerizing lol! And for a con, I would say that feeding rodents is a con if someone was squeamish about it. But even then, it’s not that bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

Knew basically nothing about caring for a BP, but quickly learned & researched a LOT in a very short time. My main concern was feeding..but I quickly got over that because she needed to be fed and her well being was my only concern!!❤ It's been almost 4 months now & I just LOVE her to death. I don't agree with putting "chance of a bite" as a con because that is a risk with pretty much every type of animal, and is even a much higher risk with cats and dogs (plus bites from cats/dogs are usually much more painful and do more damage).
    I guess I just think that it perpetuates this idea that snakes are more likely to bite you than other common pets, which is something I really try to counteract.
    That being said, another great video and I love to see your beautiful snakes! :D

    • @isitoveryet9525
      @isitoveryet9525 5 років тому +18

      It's still a con though, just like the chance of a dog biting might be a con for certain people. Comparing the two animals really isn't fair, because they're completely different in almost every way. Dogs can be trained, and domesticated....snakes can become comfortable with handling, but it's very doubtful that they'll ever be domesticated. I'm sure if this was a video about the cons of owning a dog, she would've said there's a chance of getting bit.

    • @dbros2656
      @dbros2656 5 років тому +3

      True and it is mostly dependent on the species of snake, its size and how much it is handled when it is young. I believe most snakes will rarely bite if handled properly and frequently. If you are afraid of getting bit then don't get certain species of snakes and just purchase a captive bred snake that is still young enough to train and it is very unlikely you will get bitten.

    I can't stand it when people tell me how disgusting snakes are when I tell them I have one. It really pisses me off, because I would never say that about their dog or cat.
    Also... the worst animal bites or scratches I've ever received were from a dog and cat. My snake once did a feint at me when I spooked him by accident, but he didn't actually bite me. Whereas with the dog bite I got once, I needed stitches on my hand. So, there's that. I love all my animals, my dogs and cat, but I also REALLY love my snake :)

    I wouldn't say they show no emotion or affection, I would say they are just simpler, granted I only have one snake (for now) and she's two and a half year old female ball python so still a bit skittish but definitely has her moods and what not...I also have 20 tarantulas and one true spider and they behavior changes on day to day basis and that in my opinion is proof of different emotions :) One con I would add is the cost of some equipment and initial set up and then to ongoing electricity bill :P

      Mac D I also agree, they’re a bit more “simple” than a dog, my snake would NEVER, move around in her enclosure if I was sat near it(since my pc is near it I have to sit there) but I’ve gained her trust and she don’t mind moving around more, she’s still a bit cautious but she does move around more :)

      Well I haven't measured my vivarium usage as such but the more you spend initially the more you can save in a long run, for example I have fake 3D backgrounds made out of polystyrene which act as an insulation,I also use dimming thermostat and 50W arcadia heat projector which haven't gone over 50% of maximum power once the temperature was established and on top of that I have 2% 18W UV for 12hrs so I'm probably averaging 40-50W a day which is about a half of your average LCD TV of a quarter of average PC usage

    A fear of snakes is usually innate in many people, so owning snakes especially large and docile ones often puts you in the position of being the person to help another overcome that innate fear by introducing them to your own snakes. Helping people make that transition from being afraid to even look at a snake to having your snake wrapped around their shoulders and realizing these animals arent scary is a special experience and something I would consider a pro.

      Lanka Divore: Agreed. That should be a PRO for snakes, how infrequent compared to other pets biting is and how much less damaging theirs are! 32 years of being a dog owner and the difference is that dogs may accidentally bite me when playing and will usually notice when they do. Whenever my dogs have bitten me they always display submissive behavior and react in a way to let me know it was not intentional. There is also "play" biting where my dogs gently vary their nips while playing.
      My snake bites are different. They are always 100% full force, accidental or otherwise, and they do not show remorse. I'd rather be bitten by a playful dog than by a hungry snake any day. I still love my snakes though.

    Some Ball Pythons can actually make occasional sounds - huffs and squeaks. (However, If they make noise everytime they breathe, might want to see a vet)
    When I got my first ball Python, He would make occasional huffs at night when active. I was scared actually because I thought he had an RI. He was healthy and okay. I talked to other owners of Ball Pythons, and Its true that every snake is different. My Ball Python will make a noise here and there but not every hour or something lol

    Con #4: just like any other animal that must be fed, I am sure washing hands will solve the issue especially right before feeding. I almost forgot to mention that snakes DO show their love and affection. That feeling like when the snake curls and squeezes your arm (not enough to hurt you) is that sign of love you feel. If you go to a pet store and ask the worker there why is the snake doing this to me and you start freaking out, don’t then. It’s just trying to show love. I’ve been to one and asked the member of the store and he gave me this exact answer.

    • @dingdongism
      @dingdongism Рік тому +2

      It's not likely that snakes are showing love when they curl up on your or squeeze your arm. It's much more likely they found a comfortable spot and are using you much like they would use a branch or basking spot in the wild.

    I find it refreshing that you mention snake farting and pooping as if it is as natural as breathing, because it is! I really enjoy your videos. I hope to have a pet snake some day. I’ll keep watching and learning. I want to be fully prepared!

    I love snakes so much! But I could never own one because of what they eat... I was with my friend when she bought her first snake, and they sent us home with a baby mouse. The little guy scratched at the paper bag the entire car ride so we decided to temporarily re home him in the container the snake was given to us in (as the snake was put into the terrarium my friend set up) so that he could have a comfortable place to rest for the night. The second that I held him in my hand I started bawling. He was so little his eyes and ears weren’t even open, I couldn’t imagine killing him. I knew from that experience that I cannot handle live feeding, and it’s not fair to own a beautiful snake if I couldn’t responsibly take care of them. So my biggest con for snakes as pets is that they eat whole mice/rat/etc. It’s a bummer but I can always go over to my friends and enjoy her little guy!

    Random question but what kind of heat mats do you use?? I have a zoomed one that sticks the the terrarium, but if I ever want to upgrade, i hear you can't take them off because the won't stick again.

    Hey I have a quick question that would be well appreciated if you could help me out. Can you keep a baby Ball Python in a 40 gallon breeder tank? If not, is there a way I could somehow block off some of the tank to make it an efficient home for a baby? I just feel like it'd be a little bit wasteful if I were to buy a container and only use it once for a little while. Thank you so much for your time.

    Hello Josser
    My daughter is very interested in having a pet snake. We were discussing the feeding of them with live animals and she was wondering if there is a way to do it with lead stress on the mouse or rat.
    We notice that some of your mice or rats may have been frozen but some look like they are just unconscious. Please advise.
    Tak

      Hi Andrew!
      How great she is interested in pet snakes!
      I always advice to feed either frozen/thawed or prekill. Feeding live stresses the rodent and can lead to the snake getting a bite or scratch, which later on could lead to a nasty infection.
      Right now I'm mostly using frozen/thawed rats and mice since I've cut down on the breeding my self. Before I used to do the prekill.
      I would advise to do frozen/thawed most definitely :-)

    I just got a male sunglow. Was good to see how large a male will be at or around 3 years. how large is he now? I have Florida kingsnakes and didn't want a huge female someday. I also breed the kingsnakes and don't plan on breeding boas.

    Pro #4 and Con #3 are at the forefront of my mind. When I picked my baby kingsnake up I spent $14 on medium pinkies for her. I've got 23 left and won't need to buy her more food until the Spring, huge contrast to my two cats. Con #3 I'm not used to this, and it's shocking how abusive some can be while expressing their unwanted opinions! I can live without this type very nicely and have many new friends who understand :)

    Cons can also be not getting your temps right in your terrarium hence your snake passing away. Even for a local snake indigenous to your area. Or not knowing when you buy them is something is wrong with them and finding that out after they pass away a week later, month or even a day later...

    Hi. Eric again. Razor is my Juvenile ball python and he stopped eating about 2 weeks ago. He struck at me twice. Never did that before. So I think he's stressed. I gave him a bath and cleaned out his enclosure. I hope that works. He not sick. No bubbles in mouth. Tongue flicking good when I was holding him. But how long should I wait to try to feed him again. I know he probably stressed still from bath and cleaned enclosure.

    • @JossersJungle
      @JossersJungle  3 роки тому

      Hi Eric,
      2 weeks is not a lot, so I wouldn't worry that much, but if it seems stressed then it's definitely good that you do something about it. The first thing would be to stop giving bath, they do not need it and it causes stress :-)
      Try these two videos for how to deal with stress, how to get a stressed snake to eat again and some general snake behaviour:

    I think the poop thing with snakes isn't that much of a con, when you compare it to other animals. Every animal's poop is stinky, and at least snakes don't poop very often and when they do, it's usually in their terrarium. Contrast this with a dog or cat, who poops daily, and dogs need to be let out or taken outside every time they poop, and cats need their litter box cleaned frequently. Then of course, they'll have accidents and poop on your carpet. I think a snake's poop is a lot more manageable.
    I think on the con side, maybe an additional one would be that they have to eat rodents. Feeding a frozen thawed rodent once a week really isn't too bad, but it is a whole animal that you are going to be feeding (versus kibble that doesn't look like any animal in particular anymore). A cornsnake, python, boa, etc. can not be fed a substitute, like crickets or beef: they have to eat rodents, so if you are too grossed out by it, don't get a snake because a lot of the time with rescue snakes you'll hear the previous owner just complained that they thought what they ate was gross or felt too squeamish, so they starved their snake.

    Do they have "the killer instinct"? Because my mom has a problem with mice in the summer (she lives in an old apartment) was thinking about getting a cat but I was afraid that a cat would become too much attached (the ideal would be to rent a 'ninja/barn' cat (that may be a good business idea hehe)), so, well, could I "unleash" one of those snakes in my mom's place and it would kill lots of mice? Does the snakes go into `berserk mode` if they detect mice and would fanatically hunt them?

    • @electroncat
