I love it when people make changes to the most dependable engines ever built my man. Thinking what? They're going to improve on the best auto /truck manufacturers on the planet? Good luck, geniuses.
I haven’t. I got it running again and it appeared to show signs of a blown head gasket. A little extra smoke in the exhaust and moisture under the radiator cap. It’s a great engine with low miles so it’s a shame if that was the issue. I’m probably just going to seek it as is vs tearing it apart
I actually like the 4 speed manual a lot. supposedly the engine is at 1026 RPM at 60 mph in 4th gear, which almost makes it an overdrive. and something about it just feels so indestructible. maybe not better for fuel economy, acceleration, or performance but it sure is fun. though, I cannot recommend slamming gears like a 60s drag racer because it can and will destroy your transmission
I went from a 4 speed to a 5 speed because I drove at freeway speeds often. I could be wrong but it felt like 1st gear in the 4 speed was shorter than the 5 speeds 1st gear. It felt like the 4 speed got going much easier in comparison. 🤷♂️
@@azorianification Yes, I’m in the middle of putting a early double roller 22r in place of my later 87”22r. I’ve noticed the exhaust ports and a few other thing are different from the early to later 22r’s.
The 22r is very similar to the 20r. As you mentioned it does make a little more power and some of that power is lower in the rpm range. I’d said parts are probably easier to get for the 22r. They do share a lot of parts but you can buy just about anything for the 22.
I am trying to buy a complete engine , because i am going to do a swap, so i need everything possible parts.Motor mounts, alt.and brackets intake manifold carb etc. Please let me know your last price and what parts are coming with the motor. Is there a 5 speed trans available?.(what model?( w50-w55, or.....).Thank you.
I'm looking at buying a 1977 Chinook and would love to convert it to 4x4. You mentioned in a comment somewhere else (how I found your channel) that you're going to convert yours to 4x4. Do you, or do you know who, does this work for customers? Wondering where I could get this done. I'm in the SF Bay Area, but would happily travel to get it done. Thanks.
Yes I’m in the process of building a 4x4 chinook. I’m going to document the process and upload videos along the way. The first one will be out soon. Did you want to convert a chinook to 4x4 or swap the camper shell onto a 4x4 body?
@@azorianification Looking forward to the videos. I'm an old lady and not in a hurry anymore, LOL, so I am thinking I'd just keep the stock engine and body, but add 4x4 - if that's possible. And, assuming it would be cheaper, too. Not into heavy duty offroading. But, would like to get onto some dirt forest service roads and not worry about getting stuck in the boonies by myself. I'd also love to convert the manual to an automatic transmission, even though I can drive a stick. I think I'm dreaming on that one, though, if I want to keep the stock body. What are your thoughts on that? Thank you.
Are you on Instagram? There is someone on the west coast that makes a kit that will convert the old chinooks to 4x4. I’m not sure if he converts them himself, but it’s possible. Just having the option to use 4x4 would be nice if you’re planning to venture in the wilderness. I also don’t have any plans to take this rock crawling but I just want the confidence to take this off the beaten path. 🍻
@@azorianification Hi, no, I'm not on Instagram. But, I might be able to search instagram, even without an account. I'll check. Do you know his name or the name of his shop? I'm with you -- I just want the confidence to take it up a dirt/wet road without worrying about getting stuck -- and to be able to get a bit farther than the rest of the crowd who don't have 4x4 🙂
What kind of $$ did it run you for the transmission and motor swap, if I may ask? Looking to do precisely the same job on a 75', most likely. Thanks for the video!
I purchased a parts truck that had a 22r and w50 in it. I only paid $800-1000 for it and sold everything I didn’t need. Interior, seats, doors, etc. So realistically I didn’t pay much for it. I’ve seen them for sale for a few hundred bucks. What area of the country are you in?
@@azorianification Thanks much for replying here, we appreciate your input! We are in Northern CA in the SF Bay Area and are real interested in this one: reno.craigslist.org/cto/d/stateline-1975-toyota-chinook-camper/7342184869.html In Ca, all vehicles that are 76' and newer must pass a "smog test" which can be a massive pain with older vehicles especially. We thought this one would be cool, since it doesn't require smog. There's another near "cherry" one 9 hours south that's a 78' at $16.5k but is too clean to leave on the street where we live, as it's kind of a rough area here. What do you think about the one in the ad there? Thanks!
That one looks super cool. I’d make sure it’s actually a 1975. It’s awesome that it comes with a 20r and not the usual 18rc for that era. Most older ones seem to come with the 18rc. I don’t know much about that engine but it’s much easier to find parts for the 20r 🍻
I just picked up a '78 Chinook and plan on doing a 4x4 and 5-speed swap, why did you or what are the advantages of swapping to the 22r? Or 20/22r hybrid?
The 22r has more displacement which gives it a little more HP and TQ. It’s also more common to find 22r parts even though they do share a lot of parts. I haven’t done the hybrid but it seems like a great idea if you can do it. Are you going to swap it onto a 4x4 chassis or convert the 78 to 4x4?
@@azorianification the vintage camper is too cool to separated it from the Hilux, I'm just going to cut off the front suspension and put a solid axle and leaf springs. The 22 hybrid set up seems like it's more for higher RPMs, I just want to do a simple build that is tough and reliable and can run regular pump gas
@@azorianification I might step my block up to the 22R I like how simple and clean your engine bay is, I'm definitely going to be pulling as many vacuum lines and wires off as I can
The previous owner spray painted EVERYTHING black. It was a nightmare to work on. The goal was to clean it up the best I can do I’m able to easily get to everything.
I love it when people make changes to the most dependable engines ever built my man. Thinking what? They're going to improve on the best auto /truck manufacturers on the planet? Good luck, geniuses.
So an engine made in 1977 can’t be improved on? Just be thankful there are a lot of people making parts for these engines to keep them on the road.
The heights between the heads are different so the timing chain is smaller
Between the 20R and 22R?
I need a W50 and a 20R head
Where are you located? I’ll be selling my 22R, 20R and W50 soon.
I had a 20-hour I used to get out in light cigarettes off the manifolds
Perfect!
Yeah I did that is compression
🍻
Put dat 20R head on dat 22R block, YO! You know the deal... or should know!
It’s possible. This is an early 22R so I could build a hybrid setup. 🍻
20r head on short 22r block or 22r long block?
The 20r head flows much better than the 22r. I believe you’ll need an early 22r block though.
I really appreciated thank you
@RubenLopez-pj5ov good luck
Did you tear down the 20R to see if it was indeed a blown head gasket causing your rough running condition?
I haven’t. I got it running again and it appeared to show signs of a blown head gasket. A little extra smoke in the exhaust and moisture under the radiator cap. It’s a great engine with low miles so it’s a shame if that was the issue. I’m probably just going to seek it as is vs tearing it apart

How did the swap go?
Not too bad. Should be uploading the next video soon. Are you thinking about the same swap?
@@azorianification Yes, I’m in the middle of putting a early double roller 22r in place of my later 87”22r. I’ve noticed the exhaust ports and a few other thing are different from the early to later 22r’s.
Yeah there are a few differences. Are you upgrading anything on the engine for the swap?
Genuine question, what are the major differences between 20r and 22r is it just displacement? Or?
