I bought my 1983 Toyota pickup in 2001. I will never sell her. She's got a camper shell, and even has nice AC too. She made a trip from KS to Arizona, then AZ to ND & back (in 2014). Now she mostly helps with chores around the yard and in town. Beautiful truck.
Yeah, I sold my didn't know it was that good truck. I regret selling it for $9000. Well, at least I sold it for 9k. My dad bought it for 700, but I needed the money, and the truck needed some fix that I couldn't fix at the time 😢😢.
way to go! glad to see you guys got it going and put so much work into it to keep it going. I have a 1980 4X4 with the 20r 4sp manual. these trucks are so much fun to keep and drive, they go anywhere a jeep can. having that weber carb really keeps things simple and more reliable than stock carb. good luck on the rest of the project. keep that yota alive!
I remember that door locking/open hold handle on various vehicles when I was a kid in the early 80’s. A buddy had a late 80’s one but it was with IFS in the front. I still remember the extreme rear axle wrap on these trucks with the tiny leaf springs 🤣. Not a Toyota truck guy but I can appreciate it. Personally, I would fix it up completely. It that’s what I like doing.
My papa told me that he put a celica 2.4 in his "83 hilux, the only differece was the oil pan and motor mounts, he just swapped them from the bad engine.
I read some years ago that the 1982 to 1985 model years were redesigned by the Toyota Landcruiser engineering and design team. Being essentially a lighter weight version of the venerable Toyota Landcruiser it is no wonder those years were such good 4x4s.
Has me motivated to finish mine. Last year I sandblasted and por-15'd the rear half of the frame, stripped and reseam-sealed the rain gutters, rewired the tail lights. I'm currently hung up on the headlights. There are so many crappy rewire jobs and taps in its wiring harness that I'm thinking about deleting it all and doing switches. I even bought an FSM but none of the wiring is original anymore so it makes diagnosing it very difficult.
Your rig is awesome at Orange County Toyota nights there's quite a few of these I don't know if they're 81or82or83 but there's a lot of them and they are bad ass about 6years ago in Huntington Beach I seen1like your 17000 I'm sure they want about 20 now like you said you're going to sell it for a lot you're going to get it over here in California keep up the good work
Your "manual transmission Teeyota" 😂 needs motor mounts and new valve cover grommets. When those are over tightened or just old, they transmit valve noise to the valve cover. Also that tailgate is supposed to have limiting cables/chains to keep it dropping below horizontal. I believe the 22r had 96 hp. Looks pretty solid overall!
Still rocking in my 82 4x4, that I got in 1995, with just over 500,000 km on it.. I put a Holley Sniper on it 3 yrs ago and it runs great and I modded the distributor to have ECU controlled timing. Turbo is next
Hey guys im in Australia and i have the dual cab version 4wd but mine has been converted to take a small block australian v8 . Do you know if there i any powersteering kits for this model cheers
Hope you know about LCE in Arizona...they have a 160HP 22R and its impressive....I had to get a rare R151F Trans from a turbo(they only made them for 2 years 87, 88) because the stage 2 LCE motor kept blowing up G and W transmissions I have 1/2million miles on my 87, bought new, has carb( last year for carb)and it has never broken down on the road, only had 1 flat tire, still have some original light bulbs....Wouldnt trade it for a top of the line new toyota 4x4...I saw a 85 at mecom auction that sold for $50,000
NO that is not trash , when he opened the driver door it was tight. No play on the hinges, that there said to me it's restorable easy. that truck has so much potential.
Yes a big trip would be cool especially if you into some 4x4 adventures with a group of knowledgeable 4wheeler addicts. And restore that bad ass paint job of its time.
Which engine did their 1981 Toyota Hilux have? I guess it's Gasoline engine, but still I hear it sounds like Diesel too. So, there is great doubt here LOL. Anyways, please let me know exactly which engine was used before.
I've own a couple of those and then I had a 1988 ranger. I liked the Ranger better, more traction to all the wheels. Now I have a 2wheel drive 1988 Ranger with a 2.3l 4cylinder. Which is a tried and true engine. Over 30years old and the engine has never been taken out. And i still see thise old rangers out there still running. The Toyota frames rust away from the inside out. And if you can find parts for them, they are expensive. Those old Toyotas are cool, but Toyotas are really overrated.

Can you show us a photo that's awesome
Wow I would like to see it, you should upload a video of it
Those trucks did win a war against soviet main battle tanks.
I had one of those like 10 years ago and it was in perfect shape. After seeing this makes me regret that I sold it. Nice looking truck!
thanks!

This car, as a restaurated leisure car is my top dream in life. It has it all. The sound of the door especially.
My papa told me that he put a celica 2.4 in his "83 hilux, the only differece was the oil pan and motor mounts, he just swapped them from the bad engine.
I’ve never heard of the 22R. I have a 22RE 1993 Toyota Pickup. I love it too!! I’m having a hard time finding parts, but I LOVE MY TRUCK 🥰
22r was carburetor and 22re was fuel injection
I am Toyota fan to i have my 2009 Tacoma since 2010 runs perfect 👍
I just finish picking up a 1985 2wd with 350k & she runs like new. Incredible. I love that thing.
Best truck I had ever.. 81 shortbox with sunroof, 22R, and power steering. I'm so ashamed I let it go.
Bought my 94 new. Never selling it. Most reliable truck I’ve ever owned!
Here in New Zealand they are a massive seller. 89% of all Hilux sold are diesel.
Looks good bro! I’m digging it! Now just needs new interior and you’ll be all set to go.
That’s the next step😎

HELL YEAH BROTHER! LOVE FIXING UP MINE!
That patina is so beautiful
Wow, that is a real gem with history. A Japanese Hilux pickup truck and it's a left-hand drive
The 22R is a Legendary/Bulletproof engine!!

Real quick, I am so sad they didn’t sell quad cabs in the us, you should do a full performance build on that 22r!
What I'd love a quad cab
@@BassSniper209 it is a massive shame. But now we can import them!
funny here in nz they’re most common in quad cab diesel, I’d love to have a petrol 2 door hahah
Can't wait to see your plans for this beauty 🤘🤘
Thanks bro!!
That's just a diamond 💎

Hey guys im in Australia and i have the dual cab version 4wd but mine has been converted to take a small block australian v8 . Do you know if there i any powersteering kits for this model cheers
Still in Balochistan iran the Baloch community uses this pick up for petrol import in hard mountains... From iran to pakistan you can

NO that is not trash , when he opened the driver door it was tight. No play on the hinges, that there said to me it's restorable easy. that truck has so much potential.
What tires are those wheels?? I need em
Seems a little relative at this point, you see all kinds of videos about how good and reliable Toyota trucks are. Good frame and reliable strong parts

What part of Mcallen is this? Looks kinda close to my parents house lol
Probably not gonna give deets 😅

22R gas engine
McAllen?
Because it has 20r duel timing chain with aluminum guides not like the 22r junk with single chain n plastic guides that's why 😊
