It was a stock 22r, I put a camshaft and a .60 trim t3/t4 turbo running about 12 psi.The power that it added was amazing, I am also blowing threw a 450 holley carb.
Hey Matt, Thanks for the compliment man, its nice to get positive feedback. But as far as build plans or schematics I have none.I wish I had some when I started the project that is for sure. I own a CNC plasma table so I designed and cut all of my flanges and block off plates. The header was not to terribly hard to make, I used iron pre-formed elbows to create the necessary tubes. There is no support from engine to header so I wanted it really thick it also has a 3/8 flange. If you have any other question please ask, I always love help people with sweet projects. Thanks Jarrett
It wasn't bad at all there is a guy that lives in my town that is really good with the blow threw carbs.Make sure you use composite floats and most of the vacuum ports are plugged.
Ahhh.....I am a pretty decent fabricator so I made a lot of stuff myself, I figured that I have about 2500-3000 in it or so and that is everything including the complete engine rebuild. I wasn't really bad at all. If you have any specific question please ask.. Thanks for the views.
Thanks man, Its always nice to get constructive opinions from people.Good luck on your Build, if you do it right and take your time it will be Bitchin' you wont be disappointed.
I dig it. I wanna do a much milder version for my 84 toyota dolphin camper with 22r. Using an old t25 or 14b from eclipse/talon...just to give it a lil more power. I love it...curious as to what you had to do to the holley to prepare it...like getting a solid float? Anything other than jetting
Yeah..... That would be pretty tough man. You would have to be making like 500 at the crank. It's not impossible but it would be very expensive. If you wanna make that I would go with the 1jz or a 2jz.... Or even an Ls platform. I am headed to an Ls6 next.
Hello my name is Matt and I have been wanting to do the same to my 84 22R. Do you have any build schematics or other angles for the exhaust to turbo? Just to let you know, I think your engine is perfect!
I’ve been reading the comments to find an answer. I’ve read you switched pistons and used studs. Did you use stock compression pistons or did you lower it?
I have a 22r, early 80s carbed engine in my sand rail. Im pretty much done with the turbo setup. Its a td04-14t volvo turbo mounted to the stock manifold with a section of piping and v bands. Carb is a holley 2 barrel. Its a completely stock bottom end with the stock rings filed open for more ring gap. I had it running but tore it down because it was lethargic above 4500rpms, likely valve float. So now the heads are getting light bowl porting, hand valve lapping, then an improved cam and valvespring setup. Cost wise, ive got 250$ into a used 2 barrel holley carb, $45 into the td04 turbo, $160 in charge and exhaust piping, 100$ in fittings for the oil and coolant stuff, then id figure 200 dollars in misc metal for bracket material, bolts, gasket blank material, and other misc. So figure 6-700 in hardware just to make it run. Then ive got a sweet timing retarder for pulling timing with boost, electric fuel pump and regulator setup, and a few other odds and ends that add up a bit more. If you can do the labor yourself, own or have access to a welder, and have even a working mans budget, you should be able to make it happen.
I rebuilt the engine only due to oil leaks, but while I had it apart I put new pistons and rings, I also studed the head just to be safe.other than that I didn't do anything crazy to it and I am running about 13lbs of boost or so.
I would advise against doing a draw threw carb set up man, they can be dangerous. If something were to happen you have compressed air/fuel mixture in your charge air cooler... Blow threw is a much safer set up and not hard to do... I built my own header from very thick cast steel elbows and pipe. It only cost me about 100 bucks or so. I hope this helps you, if you have any more questions just let me know.
Nice build I know this video is older but how much room did you have between the block and radiator after putting the intercooler in front? Did you run electronic fans or factory fan prop?
Did you change the conrods or anything to handle the boost? I wanna turbo my hilux but not keen on changing the internals on the engine and I'm not sure how much boost a stock motor can handle
No they are the oe rods, they are the 22ret pistons cause they are a little lower compression. i did stud the head as well. I have been running 10 to 12 psi without an issue.
Is 300-400whp a realistic power goal with a blow through set up like this? I am debating on either doing this or just swapping a 1jz into the truck. which the 1jz is going to add crazy weight but if I can make the power with a 22r I'd rather just do that. Any thoughts on how to achieve this? I'm building it for a weekend warrior/autocross truck. It's a second gen hilux that I have set up to handle pretty well just needs some power now.
All of the ac stuff on the truck is factory, your best bet would be to find a factory ac truck and go from there. I designed the turbo around the factory ac stuff so i could keep it.
No, That isn't actually a pump. It is an oil filter that filters the oil before it goes into the turbo. 22r's are very dirty engines and I had lost two turbo's in a pretty quick time so I put that filter on there and haven't had an issue since and that was 15k ago.
Jarrett Sibley Oh nice. I'm about to start installing my turbo kit, but I wanted to keep the oil separate from the engine oil. Could I use an electric oil pump? I have one on my cart that seems it would have enough power.
That is cool man, that is not entirely impossible but it is going to be expensive to do. You are going to need a pump, lines, fittings and a tank to hold the oil. I know they use oil pumps for butt mount turbos systems to return the oil to the engine but I have never heard of someone using one in the way. Just make sure it has enough pressure but not to much other wise you will push oil past the oil seal into the exhaust. If you are successful with it I would love to see it.
holy hell.. I just picked up an 86 22r 5 speed 2wd pickup for a commuter and future project truck.. hence.. why I've come here. This is beautiful.. well done. Everything else stock? Trans? gears? rear-end? etc. Power worth the time and effort, or if you were to do it again, do a swap? I'm torn between the 2.
That is Awesome, these little trucks are getting harder and harder to find. I replaced the pistons and studed the head to keep it from lifting under boost. Other than that the drive train is totally stock. The power under boost is totally worth the work. I am actually working on an Ls6 T56 swap right now, but if you want to keep the 22r and boost it, it is really fun to drive.
@Jarrett Sibley right on! Good to know it can handle it. That LS swap is going in the pickup? That's the option I was thinking as well. Haha. Or, was going to save that swap for what's now parked in the garage, a 2009 roots boosted 4wd Tacoma running 10lbs. Awesome stuff man! I'll be keeping an eye out for more of your stuff for sure.
They are strong little motors. Yeah the Ls6 twin turbo swap will be in the pick up, should be around 600-700 rwhp or so I am hoping for. Nice heard Tacos respond well to boost. I have another vid that shows the swap that I started if you want to check that one out.

I was planning on doing a draw through turbo set up on a 22r. where did you get the turbo manifold? LC engineering has a $1000 manifold and I live in Canada so it would be more like $1500
Start that bad boy, I'd love to hear that turbo kick in.
Super easy engines to work on....and deceptively fast little trucks...mine was a '90 with the 22r,4sp manual...I miss that little truck...lol
It was a stock 22r, I put a camshaft and a .60 trim t3/t4 turbo running about 12 psi.The power that it added was amazing, I am also blowing threw a 450 holley carb.

I really like your set up
One of the best I've ever seen man.

What rebuild kit did you use for the carburetor to run the turbo or are you using a regular carb?
im looking for ideas for a 22r build. i like this setup a lot!
Thank you, I really appreciate all of the great feedback
Those black hubcaps are sharp looking

nice truck bro !!!

Yeah, it is super fun to drive and it does catch people off guard.I have an Ls6 and t-56 in store for it, should be epic fast after that.
VERY nice!!
nice build.
is the motor built? or not? thinking about doing the 22ret swap to my 93 pickup but dont know if i should build my motor
ok thanks I'll let you know if I have any other questions , nice build by the way

I will do this with my truck some day
What hub did you use for the steering wheel?
Is that the stock intake manifold with a adapter for the 4 barrel?
una belleza exelente

mi toyota hilux motor 22r quisiera instalarle el turbo pero no se consigue el múltiple para adactar el turbo

I want one!!!

i gotta 1983 sunrader and thats exactly why i watched this.
I have a 86 clipper and exactly the same reason
What is your intake manifold? Single or dual plane?
Which modified u get? Or did you weld it yourself?
How hard was it to get the blow through the carb to run right
Any modifications made to the 450 holley ?
Too cool man.
Yeah..... That would be pretty tough man.

i had a truck like that 1988 22r

It is a universal steel braid cable that I wrapped with heat shield.
FIRE IT UP!!!
I'm working on my own project now
I’ve been reading the comments to find an answer. I’ve read you switched pistons and used studs. Did you use stock compression pistons or did you lower it?
I used the stock pistons for the factory turbo 22r engine, so the compression is a little lower.
It is a Grant wheel with there adapter kit.
dude that rebuilds worth more than the truck
hey man, i have a 22r with a carb, How much do you think you've spent altogether? How much time put in? I'd love to do this to mine....
Same!!
