180hp NA isn't terribly difficult. These engines had a place in circle track, so much that Holley made a spreadbore intake for these. No fabricated intakes allowed. Granted, below 9K RPM is the realm we're talking. My 6.0 LS was 402 HP and crapped out before 180,000 miles. But my R Toyotas went 400,000+ before anything serious needed looking into. It's the torque, in a small package that goes decades which gives these engines value for me.
You were not lying, that is a beautiful engine! There's nothing quite like assembling an R series engine on a stand. I did my 22re a few years ago and it was so much more enjoyable than wrenching in the engine bay. Super satisfying to slap it all together like Lego bricks.
I wish you'd consider building another 22r like this one, putting it in a crate and shipping it to me. Not bluffing. Not in a rush. Very patient and willing to make a very fair deal for you sir.
Oh my gosh..what an incredible build! Beautiful! The rocker arms segment took me back to about a year ago. Had a new cylinder head put on my '88 22R. A short time later a light tapping occured. The head had been replaced after a valve snapped right at the keeper and dropped just enough to gouge the piston. Nearly 200,000 on the engine..mechanic puts on a new head..with the original r. arms! Down the road, the new cam dislodges one of the wear pads on the old rocker. Thus the tap! Back to the shop!
Austin I love your attention to details. With work and family I never seem to get everything as perfect as your builds. I just finished a year and half build on my 1979 K30 and I'm never quite satisfied.
Nice work, on a fresh rebuild with that style of oil pump, I like to pack vaseline in and around the oil pump gears to help create instant oil pick up upon engine crank to prime, Just a trick I learned years ago.
I Just found & bought a 1985 Toyota Hilux a few weeks ago with 223,000 miles on it, to use as my daily driver. Not realizing how famous this engine is. I can only dream of being able to do something like that to this engine one day. Awesome built. Cool video.
Man i just don't get why you don't have a million or more subscriber, you are a true artist in what you do. I really hope one day you get there you deserve it.
Yogi from Australia here, Love the vids mate... own a 2011 79 series land cruiser single cab, but also own a 1995 rn110r extra cab hilux which had the 22R in it, blew that motor up 3 times... (LOL)..... It now has a Holden L36 ecotec V6 in it, but recently picked up a Holden L67 Supercharged V6 that I will be putting in it soon, I'm not sure how things work in the US but here in Aus we need to do Engineering checks on engine conversions if your upgrading to bigger engines to drive on the road ( Oh the fun lol )... Loved the big red build from 2 years ago, I find myself re-watching that from time to time for inspiration....
OMG Austin's toy chest makes me jealous 🤣 so many cool trucks, I wanna get another 'yota to play around with. That engine is stunning and I can't wait to see it running and see how it drifts...
Awesome engine men !! So clean, I just put my hands on a 86 Toyota Tercel (3A Engine) and I look forward to follow your steps and give some love to my engine
Dude. Pure 22R Pr0n !! I love it. My first 22R was also carbuerated, but I'm in Kalifornia, so it was handicapped by smog regs as is my current 22RE (1994 pickup) ... but it's something I know I can keep running for so much less than the cost of new. Now getting ready to move out of The People's Republic, and really looking forward to re-doing it as a Smog Free motor.
You may not have lived during it, but the smog in California cities was atrocious. Smog and acid rain were problems that governments needed to address. I'm fairly certain that the Chinese cities you are comparing to have not fixed this problem and the citizens are just breathing it.
GDaymate just watched your build of the 22R, could you tell me what the type of paint or coating was used for all valve cover, water pump etc.. ? Thanks
Only a true Toyota enthusiast would spend this much time on a engine that makes mid 100 H.P. love it
Well said.
100hp in the right car is a blast. My 22r is in a 800lb sandrail

This channel is easily on the top of UA-cam in this category. Top quality builds and top quality videos.
Thank you!!!
@@austinniemela how much do you think the whole built was?
You can always get a roll of gasket paper and make your own gaskets. The rolls come in cork and paper

Austin never disappoints with his work!
The color of that valve cover is amazing
That engine is a work of art. The black, silver, and gold with red accents works so well.
Aaaaah, my Toyota fix for the week - you're a legend!
Great job bro, don’t forget to seal the upper oil pump bolt too!!!
Ah yeah I forgot about that bolt too!! Thanks!

Gorgeous 22R bro
One of my favorite engines of all time 22r/e, 4age, 3tc, and 2jz. I am a 16 year Master Ferrari technician.
Color combo is out of this world bro
Lc engineering has the Teflon gaskets like I'm running on my 22R
That engine is sick, love the valve cover color and the rest..you really amaze me how meticulously you work..
Thank you very much!
At 12:07-12:10, why not grind off all that casting flash inside the runners?
My guess is that it’s only air going through, I noticed the same thing tho🤔
So clean! You always seem to out do yourself. The level you apply, to what I see is hands down some of the best. Keep it going

Almost there! That motor does look good
The Toyota oil filter pushed me over the edge. You are the GOAT.
Killer work! That distributor though it's almost bigger than the entire motor.
awesome build, i really wanna do a 20/22r hybrid build with dual webers in an old celica GT
I pride myself on solid internals, no shortcuts and a killer looking engine dress. I tip my cap sir, great job!
Man i just don't get why you don't have a million or more subscriber, you are a true artist in what you do. I really hope one day you get there you deserve it.
Thank you! I hope so too!!
That header looks sweet
Great work Austin
Use a 3/4 copper pipe seal the ends install below intake so can not be seen and you will have a vaccum chamber

Engine turned out stunning!
Thanks!
This engine is a work of art awesome mate
I would like to know exactly how to put shims on the crank shaft to keep it from moving forward and back wards.
Whats that cone called at 7:08 ?
This has to be one of the nicest colour combinations for an engine. Love it! (Gonna do my old school mitsu😉)
Thanks! I am digging the colors as well!

GDaymate just watched your build of the 22R, could you tell me what the type of paint or coating was used for all valve cover, water pump etc.. ? Thanks
Easily the cleanest 22R I've seen 👍
What paint did you use for the gold/bronze color? That almost matches the wheels on my truck
