My wife has a Sunbeam Mixmaster Model MMA 200 watt that was her grandmothers and had used it for years with reliable service until today. It started to start and stop and had a burning smell. I told her I would look at it and see if I could possibly fix it because I knew it had sentimental value to her. She said it was probably to old and just throw it away and she would just use her portable mixer to finish making the pound cakes. To make a long story short I found your video and said to myself I would give it a shot. She went to the store and I got to work. I did not go into the gear case or take the motor out but I did clean it up and take some sandpaper to the contacts. Thanks to your video she is in the kitchen using her grandmothers mixer with a smile on he face. Happy wife, happy life. Thank you for the very thorough video.
Helpful Video. The Parents' 200 watt MMA had a stuck brush which caused it to run for 2 Seconds then Stop with a strong Smell. Recently. They figured it was Dead after 44 years. But with this and a few other videos mentioning they need Oil every few months (Not this model since it's "Permanently" Oiled). I decided to investigate. (Disassembled, Unstuck the Brush, which stuck again, picked up a couple replacement brushes, swapped the "bad" one. Spring was binding up and the new brushes are slightly shorter so the Spring is now more "relaxed". Going to be pulling the Coil, etc. out Tommorow to reoil and regrease. Not sure if the Gearbox can be over Greased but based on the original grease in there it did rather well as far as I can see although as seen in this Video a light "mist" seems to have been fanned onto various items that I assume weren't originally oiled, but collected anyway (in liquid, solid, and grease forms). Even the brushes seem well "greased" inside the holders. Hope it goes well. It'd be great to keep this Mixer going another 40 years (But I'll assume the Grease, Oil,Brushes will need a checkup every 5-10 years or so to be safe.)
Sounds like you are getting it taken care of! The only thing I would not do is allow any grease on the brushes, any flour or dust being pulled through the machine may stick to it, and cause it to eventually stick again. I agree, periodic maintenance, or at least a checkup should keep it running smooth for years to come!

It runs smooth as butter, sounds great too, but it gets very warm very quickly during operation. My mom had this mixer when I was a kid, so I cannot recall if it's normal for these to be quite warm when operating. Should it be?
Hi Zachary! They do get warm, it is normal as long as they don't get too warm. There are contacts and brushes that arc, coils that will generate some heat as well. Also the resistor at the back gets incredibly hot, especially at the lower speeds. Getting hot could be another issue. A bad winding can cause the motor to get extremely hot, but since yours runs smooth, it would rule that out.
Hello! Can you please tell us what the acceptable range is for testing the resistor? I have this same model mixer and would like to use my volt/ohmmeter to check it but don’t know what measurements I should be looking for. I would be most grateful. Thank you.
This was my question I was about to ask. Just picked one of these up at second hand store and got it home and nothing. Going to take apart and see if I can figure out what happened with it. Had five mixing bowls. All stainless steel. So the bowls alone are worth what I paid. Need to find the beaters and bottom plate. I know these old mixers are better than anything they make nowadays.
What about the newer models sunbeam mixmaster legacy edition. It makes a horrible squeching noise when its turned on. I wish we had someone here that fixed small appliances.
Unfortunately that is a dieing career :( It probably needs oil on the bushings, although I am not sure how they are assembled I wouldnt be surprised to see an oil wick that has dried up inside for the bushings and needs to be reoiled
How does this model compare to the old style models? It seems to me that square motor and the non externally oiled bushings are quite the downgrade from model 12s and previous ones, not counting the boring square style so prevalent everywhere in the 70s (Ok, that one is debatable ;-) ...)
Its not bad, quite a bit of power, I think this one was 225 watts. They started to include dough hooks in the 235 watt models. I think permanently lubricated bushings was probably a selling point as well, since regular oiling was probably not done as often as it should, probably not at all sometimes. The switch to plastics was probably inevitable, but the bottom half with all the motor components was still a pretty beefy hunk of metal. I am really not a big fan of the 70's designs of most things, even cars started becoming boxier and lost a lot of the style they previously had, with a few exceptions.
The resistor in my MMA mixmaster lost its insulation wrap and now the wire wrap is exposed. An ohm check tested out to 182 ohms so it is okay. Can I use electrical tape to wrap it up? Or maybe heat shrink tubing?
No, they get extremely hot, especially at lower speeds and anything you put on it will melt and possibly ignite. You can use them without the coating, but if you want it covered I imagine you would have to look at some sort of ceramic coating.

It sounds like the speed control adjustment may be off, does speed 6 sound like speed 1 should , and speed 12 sound about half speed? If so, there is an adjustment screw under the rear cap, it may have gotten moved somehow. If 6 and 12 sound normal, and you just have no lower range, then Im not sure what it could be off the top of my head.

There is a hole in the back of the dial were an Allen wrench can fit...I just did this to adjust the govern contact through the opening...it worked! My Mixmaster has all 12 speeds! It sounds like the speed control adjustment may be off, does speed 6 sound like speed 1 should , and speed 12 sound about half speed?
