I've been learning to play Rosetta Stoned on the drums, and this is a discussion of my progress so far. Look for the drum cover some time in the next couple of weeks on the main channel.
How does this video only have 41K views. This is a phenomenal breakdown of this song. Just shows what a Juggernaught Danny is. How he can play three different rhythms along with Maynard singing in a different time and Adam playing in another. Mind blowing.
How could John have possibly learned to play all of this? "Don't know! Won't know!"
God Damn shit the bed!

That is why you should never take a sleeping pill and a laxative at the same time .
Typical
I admire Tool so much more than other bands, given that Danny was 45 at the time of recording and still was not only able to keep time within two or three clicks, record takes with such power (and I've seen Volto and watched him play ten feet in front of me) side stage, and precision, after the show he invited us backstage into a small room where he had a bucket of ice water and dunked both of his arms right into it. While he invited me to sit down with him and talk Lamborghinis. Can anyone say that of any other drummer where they LITERALLY LEAVE IT ALL ON STAGE??? And that was just for a crowd of maybe 200 people. The most humble fellow drummer I have ever met.
I watched this with awe. When I listen to Tool, I can only hear the whole. By dissecting it, you get to see what it is made of, and you hear new things even after 10+ years. Videos like this one help me understand, on a fundamental level, why Tool's music is so beautiful. Thank you for doing that.
Very true. Please make more vids on Dannys drums.
Goed gezegd, KZ.
6+ years of dissecting their music. And everytime I get stoned I hear something I never noticed before. One small ride hit. Some voices you cant hear unless its incredibly loud. Lyrical meanings. Always something new. Long live Tool
Hello. This is the future. Danny is filmed doing Pneuma. He has now developed more brains and completely rewired his nervous system so he can now stay in at least 4 different and changing rhythm-regimes at any time while throwing Indian tabala-structures in on top. His extremities have simply developed absolute rhythmic independence while his super-id seems to just chill and count the independent and changing polyrhythms making sure they come back to their common "1" at some crazy number of bars later.
As a geoscientist, the Fermi theorem is well known - answering that yes, every integer (whole number) can be described as the sum of 3 other integers squared. It took 500 years to figure out.
Now Danny is playing drums as if he is working on the "sum of three cubes" mathematical problem (which is way harder since integers can be negative when being cubed in addition to integers growing large fast when cubed).
What he does is hard to count independently (I totally lose track even counting independent movements). To move 4 bodyparts as he does is....
And to think, I forgot my pen. Typical.
Finally seeing Danny live in 2013 was like a religious experience for me as a drummer. He plays all this insane shit accurately live. I just stared in awe for 2 hours.
I stared at him the whole concert a few months ago. Literally Jesus in a fuckin Lakers Jersey
Seen them about 12 times and as a drummer this exact thing happens every single time I see them. Not only the accuracy but the precision, stamina, raw power is just fucking incredible to see live.
Not a drummer, just a Tool fan who likes to play guitar. This was interesting af. Cheers :)
Could you upload the transcription again? Thanks! Wonderful job!
Hi all - due to some requests, I made the drum transcription available for download. The link is in the description.
same question. Could you please provide a drum part in a sound file like mp3?
The link is down at the moment. Do you need a free place to upload it?
Hi John, for my year 12 solo performance in music I am looking to play Rosetta Stoned and would love a copy of the transcription... I followed your link and was unable to get it is there another way I could source it from you? Thank you
No the link is definitely down.
Please reupload it!
I was one of those people.
Thank you!! I really love this song.
I honestly do believe this is the hardest TOOL song, just in complexity and the " shift the phrasing so that nothing ever gets stale". That is literally why Rosetta Stoned is the best because it hardly repeats. The beats repeat of course, but when all the instruments are taken into consideration, it just keeps shifting and morphing.
Proof that Danny carrey is the GOAT
@hudson I could not agree with you more Sir 👍
How about John is one of the GOATs too!!
Fuck yeah!!! 🙌🏼
lololol
Danny Carey is John Bonham+Keith Moon+Neil Peart all rolled into one. He’s absolutely insane!
4:00 -4:11
I am only an avid drum enthusiast .
John , you have hit the nail on the head with this statement .
I have played drums with local musicians that I am friends with.
I find myself severely concerned with not trying to out shine or outplay anyone of these musicians .
During play I feel the the desire to try anything new but I always know that if it is not well received I will not be invited to jam again .
I love the way that Danny Carey finds and fills his corner of the universe with just the right and awesome sound .
Just goes to prove that the love for your craft will always propel a musician further than the love of money .
John....I’m a self taught drummer like yourself, from the age of 5. I won’t even pretend to be at your level of proficiency, but this inspires me to play better. I thought I had a good handle on this (my all-time favorite Tool song) but you have shown me the proper techniques to kick this up to 11. THANK YOU for your hours and hours of dedication to this song and the craft of drumming.
Thanks for spending the time to do this. Super excited for a Drum Only version of this.
I always knew he was a beast in this song but hearing you put verbiage to it is great. ;)
my first time listening to Rosetta Stoned, I got this distinct feeling of going crazy LOL. it was the chaotic nature created by the contrasting cadence of Maynard's vocals (in the first verse) over Danny's drumming. SOMEHOW, it all worked, though. I no longer play drums, I play guitar now, and I don't think in time signatures, or use click tracks. so, this kind of break down is extremely enlightening. for me, the rhythm is all done by feel, so I am aware of the changes and such and the interplay amongst the four instruments. but, in a very different way, from your approach. hats off to you sir, for doing this, and the resulting take you produced.
one last thing, isn't it wonderful that that feeling of chaos, this whole thing is going to come unhinged at any second created by the rhythms is...... precisely the emotion behind the story the lyrics is telling? just an incredible piece of music...
John this is pure gold, thanks for putting this together and sharing! I can't wait to watch you play this.
Dude thank you so much for taking the time to notate and discuss this song. That's a mammoth task and you nailed it! Massively appreciated.
Great deconstruction, thanks! Danny's drumming blows my mind.
First time viewer and I absolutely loved this. Been a drummer my whole life and a life long Tool fan. Very good work, very, very, good work man. Thank you!
John that was such an amazing video! Got me so hyped to hear the cover. Good luck!
Well done, My friend is a drummer and I suggested him to watch this video, since we were trying to play this song and after 6 months we are cleanig some mistakes but if you didn't deconstruct Rosetta, we couldn't even try it, thank you!
Could you please upload the file again? The link is down :(
You've probably seen it by now but someone in another comment shared it at drive.google.com/file/d/120fY-LSu3KfiwuJLLQC1mHU-sodhMKbD/
Wow John, just wow! What an awesome breakdown and then what a fantastic performance 👏👏👏
What an amazing breakdown of Rosetta Stoned. I would love to watch more of these John. 👍
John, you're a bloody genius to comprehend Carey's wizardry on this level!
that was incredible! I've loved Rosetta Stoned since 2006 and I had no idea what Danny was doing during the Guitar Solo breakdown until now. I really liked your breakdown, and I watched your cover video, and it was just so badass. Thanks.
You sir. Are a hero.
Meager thanks for putting all this work in and sharing it with the world.
Awesome video. I watched the whole thing and was blown away with how crazy this song gets. Never really knew it was this intense. More vids like this would be cool and Good luck!
I don't even play the drums, but I am drawn to understanding how things work. This was an excellent deconstruction, thanks for sharing your process. New subscriber here.
Just found this tonight.
Thank you John .
This breakdown video should be used as a UA-cam guide for proper enthusiast video platform .
Seriously , I hope against all darkness that all content creators see this and get a clue that will never be forgotten.
I know that your time is valuable and we are all grateful that you will share it with us in this form .
I've been following your videos for a long time and they certainly aren't new to me. I often recommend them to other TOOL or drum enthusiasts, but I want to let you know that I think you really did a phenomenal job. Always keep going without giving up.
If there's any other drummer aside from Danny that can pull it off, it is definitely you John. You have the skills and determination to do it. I'm excited to see/hear it.
I could watch a whole series of just you breaking down Tool songs like this. That was very impressive. Well done
I'm not sure what blows my mind more - the song or your explanation of of it 😮
Your amazing dude...thank you for sharing this...absolutely awesome!
This is awesome, on all fronts. so much work.
Blew my mind... incredible!
Dude I really like this breakdown of the song! Thanks for putting the time in. Now I really want to go try playing this...
This was truly eye-opening. I've always been dumbfounded as to why I couldn't follow some of these drum patterns (especially 17:40) but now I understand just how complex it all truly is. I don't know if I'll ever be able to play this well but I surely won't be able to write this brilliantly! Thanks for the breakdown!
Good luck my friend, GOOD LUCK!! Soo looking forward to it.
Amazing job, John. We absolutely appreciate your hard work and effort in this...plus, keeping this in front of you "may" help remind you where you are in this epic song! Then, as a video challenge, don't hesitate to overlay your score for us to see it WHILE you cover the tune in the future, just go have some idea of the absolute complexity of the Rosetta Stoned cover you are re-creating! Absolute props to you...but don't forget, you DO have a family! :-)
Amazing man, so excited for The new album and to see what Danny will show us next
Talking about the Swiss army triplets all over the song, at 5:45 into Rosetta stoned and 11:49 in your video, the Guitar and Bass+vocals make a Swiss army triplet together. Pretty cool lol.
Man that is amazing. That must have been hard work. Congratulations!!!
So wicked. Awesome deconstruction!
phew! that was awesome. what a work out for the mind and the limbs! great job.
I hope you keep posting your covers, deconstruction stuff, and your original work. I haven't played drums in years... I switched to playing guitar after college. I'm 33 now, and your channel has inspired me to try to wiggle my way back into drumming. I think my drums are boxed up in my parent's attic. Time to go visit mom and dad!
Danny is an octopus man, he's been my favorite since i discovered him drumming parabola in like 09 i think but its crazy because i knew nothing about him or his abilitys....or drumming for that matter and i was hooked on watching him play and the sound that comes from that gold kit is the best ive ever heard.
Danny is from another planet able to bring all kinds of chaos to order. great video John!
Very Cool thanks. Danny's a genius and you are too for being able to play this and decode it. It's like a foreign language of drumming.
Thanks so much for sharing your work John!
Excellent work!!! Thanks for this video
Amazing analysis, so much work must have gone into this video! Would love to see more of these deconstructions. I hope one day someone does these for a smaller band like Oceansize. Danny Carey is on a level of his own but Mark Heron had that similar knack of meshing musicality with natural feel to create those beautifully complex but tasteful drum parts
John, that was an amazing breakdown of Rosetta Stoned! I've been "playing" this song on my electric drums for around the last 7 years and I always knew I wasn't playing it correctly, but I had no idea how off I was until I saw this. I knew the song was complex and the things Danny was doing was super technical, but until seeing your note-by-note breakdown, I had no idea how deep and complex the rabbit hole was. My ears just can't seem to comprehend what he's doing at that level.
Thanks for sharing your analysis. Hope to see more in the future.
If there wasn't that video of him performing it at the KC clinic, I'm sure I would have missed a ton!
Thanks for this @Johnkewdrums! Great video
Love the breakdown have studied on this song it's amazing Danny don't get the credit he deserves his is the best
Much needed insights. Thanks John.
John you are a monster dude. Not only playing this entire thing, but charting it must've been a freaking nightmare haha
This is awesome. Well done!
Wow. I appreciate this. Thanks and good luck!
amazing video this make me respect tool more then I already do
What an unbelievable video. Thank you 🤙🏼
WOW, I'm a huge tool /Danny Carey fan. And memento has long been my favorite movie ever, such a cool way of explaining what happens! I got goosebumps.
Absolute madness!
Incredible work man!
THANKS TOOOO MUCH. SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA
Hey, love the content. Comment for the algo.
Heads up that (at 1:00) “penultimate” means “next to last” or “last except for one more.” As in, “the penultimate track on Aenima is (-)Ions.”
Love your drum covers. You’re amazing.
Good luck with Rosetta Stoned, I'm looking forward to you playing it on video.
Incredible. Love it and am amazed by him and by you. Side note: penultimate doesn't mean "the best", it means second from last in a series. The more you know... ;)
would love to see something by gavin harrison
This is amazing. Thanks man.
Incredible break down John! I can't imagine how many hours it took to get that granular. Also, Austin Burcham has a great vid breaking down that snare fill.
Fantastic video John, it adds a lot to the understanding of the song to me, a drum layman. You know crazy things are happening, you just don't know how or why or what. Good luck man, this is Vicarious x 2, isn't it?
I'm glad the video is interesting for non-drummers too. Yeah, this is Vicarious on steroids. Something I noticed while getting into this song is the similarity with Right in Two. Stuff like the use of 11/4 time signature, and some of the drum phrasing.
Rosetta Stoned never really clicked with me either until recently. I can't fucking wait to see the cover, man.
Thanks for the video!!!
Really good. Keep it up.
Ok John agreed, Danny’s a Percussion Zeus....which makes you???? Apollo?! You are so phenomenal yourself!!!!
Thank you so much for this video! is it possible to reupload the music sheet? the link seems to be down
Please tell me you'll release the score for this. Hell, I will PAY for the score. This was a huge help John! I've almost fully learned this one myself!!!
Good luck, you'll probably need it :D
John do you have a transcription of just the swiss army triplet part i can copy paste into logic? The PDF is gone it seems
Any chance of you releasing the transcripts for this, and other tool songs you may have, for download? Many of the tabs iv seen are sub-par and your videos are the most accurate covers i'v seen to date.
Connor Trenery Sure, I could put the transcript up for download. I don't have transcripts for any of the other songs though.
That would be fantastic! Thank you for the video. Great job!
I just put a link to the drum transcription in the description.
Respect!! 🙌🏻
Hey man, thank you so much for breaking this down, I'm trying to learn the song and this is so much help. I just can't download the transcription, says Error (4xx). Please help :(
+Johnkewdrums
Few questions.
1. Is the "breakdown" all swiss triplets or does he play a variation in that part? Hard to answer I guess but its difficult to determine.
2. Does the poly rhythm change time in all bars its played or is it the same. I might have missed that part. Sorry for the absurd questions.
This is awesome and has helped significantly learn something that I was guessing at due to nobody brave enough to tackle this confusing but great tune!
Thanks John!
I'm begging for a pdf of this transcription!
Much appreciated
Hey, your channel is great, I love this video, will you deconstruct any other tool song in the future? (Or maybe meshuggah?)
Thanks for this!
Danny Carey is from another fucken planet lol Cool and knowledgable video man, greatly appreciated! 🙏🏼🎵
This is amazing....Thank you for your efforts man!
DC is insane!!
Good luck!:D
Hi John, I keep coming back to this, your cover and the drums-only over and over. I've been trying to learn the song on and off since early 2017. I think it's time to get some discipline in and actually shed the stuff rather than trying to jam along to it.
Are you (or any helpful commenters) able to host/share/post your transcription somewhere? It seems the link in the description is dead.
Thanks, and I hope you've been doing well while not posting much on UA-cam.
Cheers from Cape Town 🤟
Look up the guy 'Rob Frawley 2nd' on UA-cam or Soundslice. He is currently creating drum transcriptions of the entire Tool discography and more is on the way! There is one for Rosetta Stoned :)
Awesome
It also took me awhile to appreciate the greatness of this song but now it is easily one of my favorites. I wonder though about the background music you use in the beginning and the song playing over Memento, it seems so familiar but I cannot place it.
Should have recognized my fellow swede, Anna Ternheim, beautiful song.
Thank you very much for this! I know you have already done enough, but I was wondering if you could provide the Logic file as well? It would be greatly appreciated, but I understand if you would rather not. Thanks!
Please do more of these
