Tool - Rosetta Stoned // Johnkew Drum Cover

- Опубліковано 16 бер 2017
- What can you say about Rosetta Stoned? A contender for Tool's best song, for sure. And it's definitely one of their most technically complex and difficult songs.
People have been asking me to record this one for years now. But it has taken until now to do it because (1) it's 11-minutes of polyrhythms and I'm lazy, and (2), I wanted to do it justice.
I can safely say that this was the most difficult and most rewarding song I've attempted. I didn't get it perfect, but I did it to the best of my abilities currently, and I tried damned hard to get it right. And since I don't drum for a living, and I have other obligations, this might be the best I'll ever be. Who knows? So of all the drum covers I've put up here, this one takes on a special significance to me.
Hopefully that shows in the video.
I had a lot of help on the production side of this video. Many thanks to Ben Slack for mixing and mastering the audio, to Gene Kucinkas for filming, and to Will Cameron for graphic design.

8:35 "I killed that section, please allow me to celebrate in joy with a couple gleeful stick flips."
Stick flips, tosses and spins are usually used as a method to keep track of timing or a counter so to speak. As well as to add a little flair.
That section of the song in my book is one of the most amazing musical pieces period.
@John LeBlanc Tool and Dortmund! Great combination
@@inthedream9127 Heja BVB! :D much love, friend!
@@johnleblanc7022 much love! A fantastic game today. Great way to end the season 💛🖤
6 years later and I keep coming back to this video. Seriously John, you should be so proud of yourself - this is an amazing performance. Hope you're doing well man.
I come back to it 3-5 times a WEEK.
I come back to it CONSTANTLY for this 6 years! 😁
Welcome to the club))
Yeah same here i listen to this x10 times more than the original. This performance is ridiculous and i'm kind of addicted to it
I'm not a drummer, but that 8:37 release must be pure drumming orgasm. Holding that slowly growing groove starting at 7:03 for over a minute a half then finally letting it go into a building crescendo of cymbal crashes, tom rolls, and more, just seems like ecstasy.
My favorite part of the entire song is that solo.
This is the best drum cover video I'll ever see in my life... I'm going home now to shit the bed.
Lol
Underrated comment lol
Don’t forget your pen!
This comment wins
Forgot to bring a pen to take notes....... been there done that.
Watching this just makes it unfathomable how Danny Carey writes this stuff out of thin air.
JackTheRipperSquid well said!
And how does he remember to play it the same every time (especially when the song is recently written)
Copious and equal amounts of jazz fusion, DMT and time spent locked in a dark room with naught but a kit.
These are probably the songs Danny spends alot of time on before recording.
Actually according to Danney, he uses sacred geometry in order to develop his patterns. Not completely sure how he does that, but that’s his technique
how do you continue playing after this? what else is there to do? you've won!
tomahawkslap Make something even better
Jaffacus facts!!
Mastodon and Cattle Decapitation have INSANE drummers
Gary Collins their drummers are definitely insane, but still don’t hold anything towards the complexity of Carey’s playing =P
@@Proppur_You honestly can't really compare them, three completely different styles of music.
I honestly think this song has the best drumming I've ever heard in any type of rock music
By far yes
You could say that about all their songs, how you were able to choose a single song is really impressive. I cant even pick my favourite album.
Agreed 💯%!!!!!!
Then came Pneuma
It's those polyrhythms
8:38 when playing this cover unlocks super powers and you start to transcend
Exactly!! Absolutely incredible moment.
"And it's definitely one of their most technically complex and difficult songs." Yup. And he throws his sticks around while he plays. Uhum.
He didn't say it was hard song to play though haha
@@lucasc2270 I know this comment is 6 months old but thought I'd mention he does say that in the description
There's a difference being hard to learn and hard to play. Nothing Carey does requires Mangini's hands, but does require plenty of groove.
Clearly someone who doesn't understand musical time signatures, how much they change in this song, and how difficult that is for the drummer.
He's had at least 13 years to practice
Can' t believe what I saw, goddamn, shit the bed!
Il Commodoro typical
I'd write down that this woodruffba guy is a douche,
*But I forgot my pen.*
Maynard: So Danny, what time signature will you play on?
Danny: 342145^321/21x4.5
Adam: Coooooooooool.
Maynard: So Danny, what tempo will you play on?
Danny: Yes
The tempo doesnt change in this song, your thinking of the time signature

5 years later, still the best Rosetta Stoned drum cover on youtube!
6. 6 years
He doesn’t play drums for a living, though. Imagine being this good at anything as a hobby. This is like having not only an ace up your sleeve but the rest of the royal flush besides.
when you're not pressured or paid to do it and you love it.... you get THIS.
The thing with what youre saying is he didnt write this music. Imitation is amazing but its no where near as impressive as sitting there and thinking about how brilliant danny carey is for actually writing this..... dont get me wrong this guy is a million times better drummer than i may ever be but my point is valid i think
@@mattystewart8 yeah. Let's not forget about writing, forgetting nobody in this town is interested in starting a band, forgetting how to play what you wrote, cry about it, relearn it again, then never play it again.
@@mattystewart8 valid maybe, but unnecessary... I think it's nothing short of mind blowing to witness anyone achieve this level of proficiency... I try not to think about Danny coming up with it... It hurts my brain... Where John wins my admiration the most is allowing us to be a fly on the wall and see every drum hit... Something that until recently, Danny has not allowed. Also... These mixdowns are better than the album release... Who ever masters these videos should mix down all of Tools future work and remaster all their previous work also 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
I play drums every single day for 30mins a day, I've played with all kinds of musicians, I drum for fun not for profit, there are a ton of great unheard of drummers, I would argue there is probably someone out there better than Carey, who does nothing but breathe and play drums all day.
I am saying this as a HUGR tool fan, and danny Carey is easily top 3 favorite drummers for me.
For me 8:37 is probably the best part of the best Tool song, like a grand finale. Seeing this guy killing it while also throwing his sticks in the air brings smile to my face, mad respect 🙌

@@ejl1000 So badass!!!!!!
one of the best for sure
the 15/4 rhythm pleases me like no other. and those accents by justin on the bass just hit soooo good
idk if I’d called that 15/4 necessarily.
More like 5 bars of 3/4. I know sort of synonymous but not how it would be notated (though I’m just a hobbyist)
What’s extra crazy is that the bass drum is in 5/8. Justin’s low G notes are in this 5/8 pattern while his accents as you’ve said are highlight each third beat of the 3/4 patter.
Also, I believe Danny is doing Swiss triplets with his hands that are in 4. Triple polyrhythm absolutely insane and still sounds sexy and musical
Must be awesome when the left side of your brain sends the right side of your brain a Christmas card - just unbelievable timing and consistency.
When you started flipping sticks I was like “I don’t like show offs but you know what, you earned it, mate.” This track is insane.
7:43 the switch off hihats. Fucking perfect. That was always my favorite part of the song.
It's funny how that little thing has so much impact. I spent a lot of time making the sample for that foot pedal, trying to get it to sound just like the album.
Amazing attention to detail man, I woulda been a lil bummed if it wasnt in it. It always gave me a menacing or impending doom kinda feel, like some evil ass spirit beckoning danny to play some sinister shit lol
pootzko he introduces a percussion sound. Kinda sorta like castanets...but not. And it's a really important element in the song to help it build up to the crescendo.
pootzko yeah not so much connected to a head on the eKit. The foot switch plugs into the brain, so it's just there purely to trigger a sound :-)
Yeah the original comment confused me too - it should have said "switch of" not "switch off"
THE MYTH, THE LEGEND, JOHN KEW DOES IT AGAIN!
You know you've ascended when you cover Danny Carey to perfection and still have time to flip your sticks.
I keep coming back to this video. I've seen it like 20 times, and I'm not even a drummer. The percussion in this song is just so good I have to see someone play it. You do an amazing job!
Also the guitar, and the lyrics (quite funny) I’m not a musician but this song it’s like floating away
This puts the drums at the forefront….then when the focus shifts to Justin and that fucking chunk….and then Adam comes in screaming…..BEAUTIFUL!!!
@@derrickjivery6933 Tool generally DOES put the drums at the front. Because Danny.
8:43 Seriously dude ahah, as if this cover wasn't already awesome
killed it!
He did it, the absolute madman.
It's all in the reflexes
Man the buildup from 7:04 to the release at 8:38 is my favorite part of any tool song. Always puts a smile on my face. And when you started flipping sticks I flipped my shit. So. Good.
Rephrase,if danny needed a lunch break,Jon could take over, great drumming!! This is very complex stuff wow! Danny's the greatest but your great
Absolutely amazing man. Sounds like it came straight from the album. I've always listened to this song thinking that it has to be extremely complex to play, and now after seeing you play this, my mind is blown. Thank you for this, you're an amazing drummer!
Thanks man, glad you liked it!
@@johnkew we need descending performed with your godly drum skills

I needed my parents permission to watch this for my own personal safety
Who agrees that he should do Schism???
And third eye!
Why just narrow it down to one song? Let's just get the whole Tool catalog! lol
Sometimes, I think Danny Carey is up there doing John Kew covers.
😅
Not a drummer, but 7:05 and onwards looks hard as shit. Just holding that many rhythms at once, it's like each limb has its own brain. And he holds it for a long time too, lot of time for error,
totes. the parts on their own are tough, but what's amazing is the length and consistency these dudes are able to deliver during such a complex beat.
That 15/4 part is just magnificent... I’m a bassist myself and how tight Tool are (and to his his credit John) is insane. Watched a video where Justin talks about going on walks and ends up walking in a strange time signature. He would keep it in his head to play and record when he got home, that shit is fantastic.
That bit is by far the most mathematically abstract and complicated music piece I've ever heard.
@@hemanthkotagiri8865 try meshuggah - I
@@c95060"I" know meshuggah. I feel they are indeed a really great band. But the drummer in there, plays progressive repetitive notes.(my opinion). But Danny, nope! Danny's got lot of polyrhythmic going on and the math behind it is absolutely crazy and he doesn't even prepare before composing, he just does it on the go and that to me, is beyond God-like.
Immediately subbed when he started flipping sticks.
He was just showing off at that point... and I was completely fine with it.
Tbh that's not what should have made you sub. It's the part before him flipping with polyrhythms that is the epitome
Thank you for reminding me to sub
From 8:37 on, flipping the sticks like a boss. I can see Danny Carey applauding
7:04 is when the goosebumps start. You're welcome.
impressive job at 6:27 (and 6:46). one of the rare examples of three different rhythms played simultaneously in metal drumming. very well executed.
Alright then, picture this if you will:
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51.
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!
Then the X-Files being, looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips and breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa,
Did a slow-mo Matrix descent out of the butt end of the banana vessel and hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was: "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin' pants."
So light in his way,
Like an apparition,
He had me crying out,
"Fuck me,
It's gotta be,
Deadhead Chemistry,
The blotter got right on top of me,
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"
And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One, the One who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.

With somniferous almond eyes.

Like the time Dave floated away.
See my heart is pounding,
'Cause this shit never happens to me.

All sort of terrifying.
And I don't wanna be all alone when I tell this story.

Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real.
Finally it's my lucky day.
See my heart is racing,
'Cause this shit never happens to me.
Can't breathe, right now!
You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said, see the Dead ain't touring.
And this wasn't all in my head.

You did Danny Carey justice. Actually mic'd the drums properly, 10/10 good job buddy!
Jayson Brady It really is a feminist related thing, to be completely honest, don’t ask me why it is, everytime a girl uploads anything musical related, and at first thought, far outside the usual females comprehension, people for some reason lose their shit in excitement and click like mad dogs. Really shows men are factually and realistically capable of doing much more masculine, complicatedesque things, a man uploads something like this, the interest isn’t really sprung up, it’s almost expected for a male to be capable of pulling this off (generally speaking) so of course women are also going to click on it, it in some ways represents women, and their capabilities.
What chick? What song? Tell us.

I have a question you can hopefully answer: Do you remember recording this? I mean, do you remember literally sitting there and playing this? Because you were IN THE ZONE, man. It's fascinating to watch.
to be honest, I probably wouldn't.
Somewhere between the beginning and the stick flips, John just fucking ascended. It was amazing watching his conscious brain turn off.
@@cf453 Its the place we all aspire to get to, when playing a song.
we drummers are never in the zone, to play something like this you need to be so absolute and be aware of every minute detail, if you slip into comfort on the drums you will quite literally kill a song like this
John, this is amazing! In the description you come across as very humble and down to earth. You are emulating one of the greatest drummers out there, Danny Carey, whom I sure would be blown away by how good you are. (1) You're definitely not lazy, the lengths you went to to get all the details correct is insane! And (2) you definitely did the song justice.

If you would timetravel to the year 500 and perform these coördinated motoric movements the public will probably burn you for witchcraft. It's amazing what people nowadays can do musically.
Scythes People back then could do amazing polyrhythmic percussion as well, it's not exclusive to modern times silly goose
People underestimate what past humans could do. They had the same mental and physical capabilities as modern humans. Although it is true that these particular rhythms would be pretty goddamn alien to them.
Anachronistic Laser Beams Yes exactly! Sure no “caveman” came up with quantum mechanics or a computer, I’m certain that there were Steven Hawkin level IQ cavemen who did incredible things relative to the technology available to them.
George Kam Actually, the earliest evidence of modern humans (ie. Homo sapiens) dates back over 300,000 years. Over the next 250,000 years or so, they developed into what we now consider to be Homo sapien sapiens (humans displaying full behavioral modernity, ie. language, music, culture, abstract thinking). There has also been significant fossil evidence that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens coexisted, and likely even interbred until about 40,000 years ago. So to say that modern humans have only existed for 5000-7000 years, and that they lived totally and completely separate to cavemen is just plain false.
Anachronistic Laser Beams we’ve been evolving way more than you think dude even our anatomy is slightly different, and even average heights are different. Intelligence wise I can only guess but with a supercomputer in my pocket i think I can outsmart their so called Steven Hawkins. We daily meet problems they can’t even fathom we are essentially aliens to them.

Not many can keep time with left foot and consistently play 3 separate signatures at the same time. You can. Nice! Definitely one of Tool's most intrusive parametric pieces.

Like many others, I have been waiting years for you to serve this one up John. When the notification popped up on my phone earlier today, it was so hard for me to not drop everything I was doing and watch it. But, I patiently waited till the end of the day, kids and Wife in bed, time to rock. Vincent Vega might say this is a bold statement, but I think RS is my favorite Tool drum track. There is just so much going on. It's like a 7 course meal at a 4-star restaurant...one tasty dish after another.
I've come to expect greatness from you sir and yet again, that is exactly what you delivered. Was every single note carbon copied from Danny's track? Maybe not...might be closer to 99.5%. But as for energy and spirit --> that was 110%. It was literally dripping off your sticks. I am usually not a fan of stick tricks, but your flips took me completely by surprise and felt like more of a celebration of how awesome you had nailed it thus far. I'd swear I could hear you screaming "shit yeah" in your head. Know what? I was too. 😊 Dude, I could go on and on. I'll end by saying, I seriously appreciate your craft and effort and I get pure joy out of watching you "at work". You keep uploading 'em, I'll keep watching 'em! Thanks John!!!
Thanks for writing this my friend, it is so gratifying to know that these videos are fun to watch. If just a fraction of the feeling I get when playing it can be felt while watching it, then that makes me very happy.
I'm not big into stick flips either, but I have to tell you, they felt really good on that part. Kind of letting the energy take over.
