"This Hole...ly experience, this hole...ly reality" he drags those out and then he hits "holding" as one word, twice... that is fantastic phrasing. I think that is worth mentioning. It is one of the first things that struck me on first listen of this album when it came out. He is singing about a holy experience and singing about it as a hole..... but when he is talking about being held in his body it is enunciated and concrete. Great juxtaposition of words and concepts... truly adds to the haunting eeriness, perhaps emphasizing the doubt of the Holy, but but he becomes almost staccato when he is talking about the flesh and body. It's brilliant. Think about the part you love this bod..dy, this body holding me. he does the same thing in miniature with body that he drew out a bit with holding and holy.

It's cool to watch someone dissecting one of my all time favorite songs... that said, what I have always loved about Tool, and you reinforced that with the comment about Maynard not necessarily constructing his melodies by thinking of what mode he's in, is that while being constantly changing time signatures and subdivisions, it never feels like it's complicated (to my ear anyway). It's the most natural and "organic" non 4/4 I can think of. It doesn't feel forced, it doesn't feel mechanical, it's not a technical demonstration... it just flows like a jam session, and it seems to be built purely on emotions... all fined-tuned to hit you in exactly the right way. Fuck I love Tool. Nothing they play (except for Carey) is even remotely hard to master, but nobody can build a song like they do. Masters of their own sound.

Rick, you should consider doing DVD's of whole albums done in this format. I'm sure the licensing would be hell to sort out, but I know I would be buying them. There's so much information in them that they all bear multiple watches. Oddly, these are invariably more informative than having the actual producer (and artist together sometimes) going through a recording at the desk. The things you pick out are aspects of a track, like the vocal line at the start, that the people involved could have been unaware of first time round AND second time round.

Maybe the musicians would appreciate this series if they found it, but there are so many things going on in their life that they don't have the time to check every copyright infringement, so they risk taking out the proper uses of their music in order to catch the people misusing their music/ prevent them from earning their well deserved money.

This is the first Tool song I learned on the guitar in high school. Its fucking mint. Those 4 can teach you more than just melody and riffs.

Tool is my favourite band!! I would love it if you could do "The Pot" or "Vicarious", their top charting songs, along with "Schism", which you already covered wonderfully!

Tool has an amazing ability to play in 4/4 and convince you that it's not, and to play in obscure time signatures in ways to which you can still bang your head. It's not just the crazy time signatures they use so well, but their gift for sucking an infectious groove (with a H/T to the band of that name) out of any time signature.

Parabol/Parabola is just an amazing work of art. One of my favorite pieces of music of my time. Born in 1967. Tool is one of the best rock bands of the 2x centuries … so far.

I love this. 19:20 in and he says "Now we're just getting to the good part." What a way to contextualise the musical genius that went before! ;-)

That 3 over 4 thing: TOOL perfected that. They were getting that element into focus on Aenima. At that point, a few of us suspected that was as tricky as TOOL was going to get. By then Soundgarden had all but given up on all conventional rhythms. TOOL wasn't quite done exploring sophisticated rhythmic groove. But on this song, they probably outdid themselves in perpetuity. It's not the most tech thing they ever did, but Jesus -it's effective. Lateralus is the only work they have along these lines that is perhaps more powerful. It's their Stairway to Heaven.

I've been learning the drums to a number of these songs.
I would find such access to individual tracks as seen here _invaluable_ for learning: 75% of the work is just trying to hear it!
