I dont want to really compare but the DNR of a 991a is somewhat magic too. I think that the matter is simply about the new DSP of recent rigs of any mark.

The noise blanker only subdued the noise, it never got rid of the noise.

You simply can not beat good clean analogue audio from older rigs in quieter environments. But for a lot of hams noise blankers and DSP are the only options.
