Icom IC7300 A to Z #13 IP+, Noise Blanker and Noise Reduction functions

  • Опубліковано 25 сер 2024
  • NOTICE: In July 2021 the channel name changed from HamCuredSmoke
To Ham Radio A2Z. All of the earlier videos (like this one) are still available.
We will look at the IP+ or Intercept Point optimization function, the Noise Blanker and it's settings and finally the Noise Reduction function and how adjusting it affects the sound. Oh, and there's a gas powered leaf blower in there somewhere too.

I love your videos and recently purchased a 7300. I have been using your videos as my manual because I have low vision now and changed out my HF radio to this for that reason. I really love this radio and the features. Perfect for me now and I am doing a video on why I like it with my vision, should be out in a few days but I am planning on mentioning your channel in my video. I like the features on this radio over my FTDX 3000 for my eyesight and am having fun again on HF! Keep up the good work.

You gave the best description of what the IP+ function does and what it is “intended” for that I could find on the webs. This is by far one of the best video series on the IC 7300 there is! Thank you! 73

Hi Tom; I got my 7300 about 2 1/2 years ago and just stumbled upon this series a few days ago. After viewing only about a dozen or so of your videos I have greatly expanded my (limited) knowledge of the 7300, especially in operating the various filters available. I intend to view every one of them and really appreciate all the time and effort you;'ve expended to produce these. Thanks and 72, FA W1ZAH

Just got my IC-7300 and just now working my way through these VERY HELPFUL videos. One tip I've heard and it works for me: activating the NR function makes the audio sound a little muffled (at least to my old ears). One can mitigate that effect by boosting the audio treble a couple notches: Menu/Set/Tone Control-TBW/RX/SSB/RX Treble.

In rural areas the prime use of the Noise Blanker is to remove the pulse noise caused by electric stock fencing. At my location it fixes this completely and the energiser is in the same shed and the antenna is attached to fence posts!

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  5 років тому +1

Nice! I’ll have to remember that next time I want to demonstrate this. Especially if I do any live demos or trainings. My wife has horses and we used to have our own place with some pasture. A small battery/solar fence charger would be perfect to show the type of noise that the NB helps. And it would be a lot quieter than the leaf blower. 😉

    • @garypieratt2961

My neighbors electric fence would drown my audio out if it wasn't for the NB. Works beautifully!

I have heard that IP+ ADDS a dithering effect or concept to excite the lowest level signals it exaggerates the high spots compensating and differs the low spots creating contrast in the signal itself. I think I can source ham radio concepts for this. He didnt explain it quite the same but that is the idea i got

The newer cars with coil packs right on each plug are definitely less noisy on HF. Although, funny enough, I use the noise blanker in my 2018 diesel truck. Obviously, there’s no ignition noise, but the electronically controlled fuel injectors put out a pretty good pulse noise when they are firing.

    IP+:
based on what I knew, it is more about data point interpolation. IC-7300 has 14 bits RF ADC (Analog to Digital Converter). which theoricaly has 14 x 6 = 84 dB of dynamic range.
The IP+ enhance the sampling data and 'guess' the signal strength up to 16 bits, and enhanced the dynamic range up to 16 x 6 = 96 dB.
That's why in Sherwood test report, IC-7300 has 94 dB of dynamic range when using IP+.
In short, it is a data manipulation to increase RF dynamic range, which may increase RX performance.
Again, correct me if I am wrong.
    Thank you.
    Yours,
    Bahatir 9W2GNU, 73...

I looked at the Sherwood report. I also found a review by AB4OJ here: www.ab4oj.com/icom/ic7300/main.html. I don't believe they are exactly "interpolating" the additional 2 bits of resolution. The article from AB4OJ says that when IP+ is on it activates ADC dithering and a randomizer. If I understand correctly, I believe what they are "dithering" is the gain of the preamp coming into the ADC. I also suspect they're changing the gain by an amount that changes the value for the same voltage by less than 1 bit or at least by an amount that isn't an integral bit value. This would have the effect of producing readings in between the last sample and effectively give you more bits. Since you now have to process data across several samples, it would also effectively reduce you maximum bandwidth. Although the A/D can do 124 megasamples/sec, they have plenty of oversampling for every band except 6 meters.
Unfortunately, unless Icom decides to make the firmware open source, we'll never know exactly what they're doing.
Thanks for your comments. Good discussion.
      73,
      Tom

Unless, like you say for very weak stations, why would one NOT use NR? I mean, who WANTS the noise? I would think the default would be always "On". I always have mine on. Thx, another excellent vid.

Well, not so much double talk, but incoreect or at least different uses of "Verbs" by the interpreter. The next sentence gives even more clues. "Optomizes the A to D converter (another words, using the info gleaned from the digital A to D converter to work with the noise AND using it in a optimum manner) … " Which to me means the are analyzing the audio with the digital circuitry of the circuits and then applying that to the distortion and hopefully removing distortion. Cool.

Hi. You need to turn the Monitor function off. Press the Function button in the bottom center of the front panel. On the menu that pops up on the screen, touch MONI on the lower right to toggle the monitor on and off. You can also push the multi-function knob on the upper right corner of the display and touch Monitor at the bottom of the window that pops up. Then you can adjust the level or touch repeatedly touch Monitor on the screen to toggle it on and off. Look on page 4-11 in the manual. Hope this helps.
