  • The IC-7300 ham transceiver from Icom comes with an impressive noise reduction feature. This video explores the capabilities of NR live.
    Listen in stereo! Use your balance control!
    One side has the narration, the other the straight audio as recorded by the radio. You will hear the various levels of noise reduction as I make adjustments.

    Your RF gain seems high. Lowering it to no noise floor really clears up a signal too. Works great with DSP.

    The 7300 has alot of neat features for the money. I used to own one but got a Tentec Eagle and an Argonaut VI. Getting these rigs with their low noise floor and great NR is why I sold the 7300 night and day difference from the Icom. BTW I still have my original Icom 751A and it has a better sounding reciever than the 7300.

    The Yaesu FTDX-3000 is supposed to be quieter with no noise reduction than the 7300 with noise reduction , certainly the 7300 does have a very harsh sound.

    I have found that the dual passband filters can be used as well to filter out the higher pitched noise. your thoughts?

    I must say the NR in this radio is better than my old radio, an Icom 756 Pro3. It wasn't bad in the Pro3, but beyond 10 or 11 o'clock and it went all watery. And I hate that watery sound.
    This is an improvement and Icom has done an admirable job on this whole radio.

    NR is one of those things where less is more. Some believe it can make a weak signal copyable, that MAY be true for CW, but not for SSB. Its better for cleaning up mediocre signals and making them less fatiguing. Nice demo, I like the 7300 - first radio ICOM has put out in at least 5-6 years I'd buy, no idea why they let themselves get behind. That panadapter looks fantastic.

      This is not true . From my own experience, I have been able to rescue illegible signals and stations with the kenwood ts2000 nr1 and spac nr2 and that is a system already with a certain age. The nr Dsp systems are learning and comparing while they are active. Do a test with some longer time.

      @@cesarea4is60 Well, from my own experience using Elecraft equipment, NR has never made a uncopyable signal copyable at the elementary level. NR has helped make them easier to listen to, and for more enjoyable operating, but its just common sense that when noise>signal its hard for the best NR software to do much with it.
      My own take is that you want a better s/n ratio than NR, which is why all things being equal your antenna system is the determining factor for working weak signals and eliminating noise.

      @@cesarea4is60 You're both talking about analog radios when mentioning the TS2000 and the Elecraft. On the 7300 being full SDR it does not help in the majority of the cases.

    • @kd8opi
      @kd8opi 2 роки тому

      @@624radicalham Actually my radios include an Elecraft K3, KX2 and a Flex 1500. The Elecraft K3 is not an analog radio. Its a hybrid SDR. I own a Kx2 that is a full SDR, and my Flex 1500 is also a full SDR - obviously. None of these radios has made an un-copyable signal copyable with NR. NR can make copyable but fatiguing signals easier to listen to for long periods of time.
      I will say that noise blanking on these radios can cut out interference from power-lines and electrical equipment and unmask signals. PowerSDR is the best at this. But nose blanking is for very specific QRM. If you really want to capture weak DX, is all about your antenna. As you suggest Miami, no magic button boosts signal and reduces noise.

      @624radicalham 2 роки тому +1

      @@kd8opi Thank you for that. I was not aware the K3 was a hybrid and that the Kx2 was a full SDR as I've never been an Elecraft owner. I find with my 7300 and 7610 that in the end what improves a noise problem that I'm plagued with is an MFJ-1026 Noise Canceling Signal Enhancer. Just nulls the noise right out and I'm left with an enviably quiet noise floor. Of course, they're not made for QRO without modifications. As you say, NB can be effective indeed for pulsing noises being mindful (especially on the Icoms) of not using too much as it will quite severely degrade the copiable signal introducing digital artifacts. But the MFJ-1026 improves my signal to noise ratio in a way that I've not yet seen a NR or NB do (specifically with the noise that I have). I see many videos of people employing the NR in Icoms and Kenwoods with 20 over 9 signals, which defeats the purpose when you're looking to copy a signal in the noise such as I enjoy.

    That would be great if it didn't reduced just the noise and not all sound. The noise goes away but so do the voices. What good is that?

    Now I’ve been using the FT-891 a good while I can honestly say the noise reduction blows the 7300 out of the water.
    I’m getting the pan adapter for the 7300 which will allow me to hear the audio directly from the airspy HF+ which is vastly superior to the 7300.
    I should have got the FTDX-3000 which already has if out for panadapter and should sound as good or better than the FT-891. The Audio on the 7300 can be quite fatiguing to listen to after a while.

    Hard to tell how good noise reduction is when your noise levels are already S1.

      Radio Hobbyist ,, ancient Chinese secret,. But I will tell you one thing it is an Icom, when the filtering are done properly in it you can't beat the receive and transmit audio on it. Kills a radio like this. My friend has 756Pro3, he came over to see my radio and he couldn't believe it, it destroy His Radio just destroyed it.

    OK, Rick..... which SDR rig has the most background noise? How would you rate them from lowest to loudest? I see that you can make the 7300 "quiet" with NR ~ 10. But how would you rate them without using any NR and properly set AGC on 80M SSB for example? It looks like you have at least 4 to rate: Flex, Elad, mcHF, Icom. 73 Bob

    • @Radio-Hobbyist
      @Radio-Hobbyist  6 років тому

      I no longer have the Elad, and I don't have professional test equipment, so my gut feeling about this would put the mcHF as worst, and the Icom & Flex both being excellent. Flex is probably the best.

      Thanx, Rick. Interesting outcome. I found the 7300 background noise to be excessive no matter what I did. It was always worse than my superhet rigs. Yes, I tried everything. If I ran NR at 10 then it became competitive. My Flex is the quietest at this QTH. AGCT works very well for this. Lastly, I am an Icom fanboy, so that is not the issue.

      It was either too weak or to strong signal during the demo, so all you could hear was the background noise changing a bit.
      So the demo was far from perfect. He should have changed the value quite rapidly while listening to a proper weak station. If I have a noisy SSB signal on my FTDX101d, I find the DNR to be effective and some narrowing of the bandwidth to reduce overall noise.
