This song is 30 years old. A lot of growing has happened since then. Love the sarcasm. Btw. Puscifer was a made up band name used in a comedy show that Maynard and Adam guest starred in. Maynard later decided to make comedic music under that band name. Yes, funny how Tool fans take the music too serious, when Maynard and the band are very sarcastic.
So good to see you brothers and great choice!!!!!
When the lotus experience comes on 🤣😅
So happy to see you guys again, much love brothers!
Glad to see you two gents back.
I’m non religious but I love to see your breakdowns of lyrics that may not align with your views. You educate us on your beliefs while understanding the opinion of others. Two big thumbs up.
To put this song into a bit more perspective this was written in 1992 before Judith probably when he was the most outspoken regarding the church but if you look at his discography spanning all three of his bands you can see how his view has softened quite a bit and his lyrics shift towards people and not theology.
That definitely makes sense. I didn't consider the timeline in my review. I just reviewed it as I heard it.
@@roberthoughton7127 I figured I just thought I would point it out. I think it would be cool for your channel if you did a recap video with the information people tell you and maybe a little personal digging to accompany the initial reaction videos because a lot of the songs at face value sound extreme and often lyrically can be dark themed but a little digging can change the whole meaning behind a song when you understand the situation around it.
Yeah… you can see his progression towards religion from this which is the oldest to wings.
@@roberthoughton7127 you also need to know his mom was basically booted from the church but I think that happened after this song or was at least written about after.
@@roberthoughton7127take a closer listen to descending at 1:55" Jesus end your slumber" . To me the music is an alchemy or evolution. It's their return to christ in my opinion. In wings for Marie he says " burden of proof tossed upon non believers" I wonder what they saw in some of their magical escapades
I love the fact that they can hear lyrics they don’t like but they keep listening to the song. These dudes listened to this and “Judith” and were open minded enough to keep going because the music is so exceptional even though the lyrics weren’t their thing. Kudos sirs
Hearing the lyrics and UNDERSTANDING the messaging of the lyrics are 2 VERY different things tho. Which is plainly demonstrated here.
@@Dildo_Baggins. they understood that the song was about his anger about his mom’s years of suffering. They only seemed bothered by the language. How often are Christians that open minded to darker music? A girl I knew stopped talking to me because I played that song when it came out and she thought I worshipped the devil.
I’m not a believer but I really enjoy your perspective and respectful reactions to this kind of lyrics.
Thanks for being respectful man! Believer or not, that’s what “coexist” actually ought mean more than a divisive argument.
And as a believer, I’m thankful you got to experience this w/ myself as such and we’re in the same boat enjoying the same experience in different perspectives
One thing to keep in mind is that Houghton's religious beliefs dictate that you will "burn in a lake of fire" after your death because you do not believe as he does. For some reason, we give religious people with extreme views a pass because they're not yelling and screaming that you're going to burn. They sound nice, but they say heinous things in a friendly way. He does believe you're going to burn. We non-believers can laugh about that, but Houghton is very serious about you going to hell. That's how "respectful" he is.
@@Micas099 believers are only letting you know what God, the Creator of Life, h!s said in His Holy Word.
Think about the deep breath you draw.
YHhhhhhhh (in)
WHhhhhhh (exhale).
See it?
YHWH. God allows deniers of Him, to say His very name, with the same breath they deny Him with.
HALLE LU YAH!
P.s. forgive name error. I might seem directed towards wrong person here, but. I speak generally and to all who read and DO believe. For reaffirmation.
The blind can't see, the deaf cant hear.
@@zulumagoo1 That was an incoherent, pointless, mess.
One thing to help reframe… keep in mind this is the evolution of Maynard… to hear him resolve his issues with Christianity in 10,000 Days and his spirituality since… it really frames his growth.
Welcome back Pastor Rob! It warms my soul to see you guys back again ❤️
Idiocracy of religion represented very well in this song.
Think for yourself question authority.
Think for yourself question authority.
Source your beliefs. Source your holy book. Practice epistemology. Free yourself from yourself. One life. Cherish it. Seek truth. Study logical fallacies. Seek truth. Be not afraid of the unknown.
The song is not anti Christian it is purely a tool to help share the the perspective of doctrinal beliefs.
Point is no matter if your a tool fan or a Christian, following any narrative fanatically or blindly is only a path chosen by the followers.
So glad you're back. love your analysis! hope to see more content soon!
Glad to see you guys are back Keep up the good work
Welcome back!!! Hope all is well!
....been missed and in my prayers!
I am so happy y’all are back! May God bless you and your family.
Glad to see you two back on YT. Praying for everyone, God bless.
It’s good to see you two back, I pray all is going well with your family ✝️🙏🏻😇
So happy to see you guys back! Excellent reaction and analysis.
It’s really cool seeing you guys again. Hopefully everything is turning out good. May God bless you guys and your family. Keeping you guys in my prayers. Now can you guys do a reaction to No return by As Lions and Lambs
glad to see you guys back, great song to return with and I really found your take very interesting, great video, keep up the good work
Welcome back! So glad to see you doing reactions and analysis again.
So glad you guys are back! I was just looking at your channel a few days ago wondering if you had posted anything!
So glad to see you back, I was actually thinking about you guys last night, haven't seen anything posted for a while.
Glad to see y’all uploading again keep up the good work fellas.
So glad you guys are back! Was just thinking about you the other day
Welcome back, guys. I always appreciate your discussion about songs I like. Hey, when I saw the title I thought you were going to do the newly released, reimagined version of Opiate. It's a good listen.
I was just thinking about you all last night glad to see another video. Keeping you in my prayers.
So glad y’all are back!!!
So happy to see you guys back, another great reaction as always!
Glad to see you guys are back, hope your wife is doing better!
I am pumped to have you back!!
YES! Welcome back guys!
Good to be back! We love you guys!
Glad to see you back!! Enjoyed this reaction very much
To God be the glory!! Glad to see you guys back again🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Glad to see you 2 back. Enjoyed your outlook on the song as well as the sarcasm. Keep it up.
Good to see you back . I had just checked your vids yesterday to see if I'd missed any .
Good to see you guys back. I hope all is well guys.
Very happy to see you both back! I hope the Mrs. is doing well!
So good, you both are back.
Wishing you a lovely holiday, it's great to see you back. As always, while we may have different views and beliefs, it's a huge benefit knowing how other people feel and think about music within the guise of their belief system. It opens the door for a more constructive dialog and a deeper understanding of someone. 💚🙏
Great video fellas! I like that you listen all the way through instead of pausing a million times 🤘🏼
Glad to see you both back! I checked the other day and noticed you hadn’t posted in awhile. Hope all is well for you all. That second part you heard was the hidden track on that album. They had one on the Undertow album that is supper trippy and weird (and cool) as well. Props on knowing the Marx quote as well, they loved Bill Hicks and always used his references as well “Religion is the opiate of the masses” etc. anyhow, glad you’re back. Much love to you both.
Hey guys, listening to you from France ! Thanks a lot for your reviews and your good humour ! I did not have the chance to have a religious education, but I am a believer. Keep up the good work :)
What you need to realise is this is early Tool. Filled with rage and anger.
I’m learning that the more of their songs I review.
@@roberthoughton7127 that's just modern evolution. Evolving the mind . Interpretation is so so difficult through out all cultures and religions.
They just went to the effort of releasing an updated and remade version of this song ... something tells me this particular view of theirs (or Maynard's, as the case may be) hasn't evolved that much over the years.
Perhaps you’re right, but their newest song echoes a very similar sentiment as this song
@@mikefraser3667 listen to Fear Inoculum.
so happy to see you guys are back again
Good to see you guys again. I hope all is well.
Welcome back! Blessings
Glad to see you guys back, hope your wife is doing better. I really love your outlook on religion, so many questions I would love to ask you. Really having a hard time dealing with a death in the family this week and fail to see why.
Just came across your channel and I’m a huge rock fan I appreciate the way you guys break down music. ♥️✌🏽
Man I don’t feel the need to provide my views, but you guys are awesome. Been watching for about a year now and I love watching/listening to a different perspective. You guys are awesome.
its good to see you guys back, hope everyone is doing ok
Good to see you guys back!
Coincidentally, my wife and I just went down the Wings (part 1) and 10,000 days (part 2) rabbit role yesterday! We watched your reaction video and a couple others, and read the lyrics. We had a long conversation about how MJK was hurt by the church at an early age, and that pain impacted him in such a profound way. All that he went through in seeing his mom (who he viewed as an angel) suffering, and maintaining her faith through it all, both inspired him and angered him. He didn't understand. He used that pain and anger to fuel some of the greatest art of our generation. It's sad that it had to come from such a dark place. But, he has been able to express himself, and through that, as his career has matured, and he has been able to heal, you can see that he seems to be in a healthy place now, both emotionally and spiritually. I pray for him. His artist talent and genius is undeniable. I pray that some day he will understand why his mother had such a deep faith in Her savior, and perhaps even he will accept God's grace and truth for himself.
Praying for him as well. 🙏
I pray for the entire band. As they age, praying God reaches them before it's to late.
I’ve prayed for him ever since seeing them at lalapalooza ( oh wow 98? Getting old here lol) He came out dressed as a televangelist holding a Bible cursing God. Influenced The Whole crowd to do so as well. Sad to see. Changed me forever.
@@dirtyswar *too
This is what all Christians should be praying for!! Unfortunately in my experience there is too much judgement and throwing people away that are in bands like this? 😢 it’s too bad we should be running after these guys with open arms.
So glad to see you back!
Glad you guys are back! I would love to hear your thoughts on Invent Animate - The Sun Sleeps, As If It Never Was
Good to see you guys back!! Please do one for Veil of Maya’s Outsider!
Glad you are back brothers in Christ!!!
Happy to see you guys back. Growing up in a household that was of Catholic faith, it’s sometimes conflicting for me to listen to the music (like tool) that I’ve grown to love. You guys give amazing perspective that give me some comfort in being able to see the lyrics in more than just one way. Much appreciate you guys for this!
Good that you´re back!
“Not the lyrics” lol great reaction! Thanks!!
I was wondering where yall were. Just saw and got caught up on what has been going on. I am glad all is well with you and your family. This will be a great testimony of faith. Many will see how you respond and this will be a beautiful testimony of your faith and how good the Lord is. Our mess is our message and our test our testimony. 😇
Welcome Back!! As a middle ground believer, meaning I'll find out when I die, I thoroughly enjoy your content! Great breakdown musically and lyrically. Don't feel bad for non believers, they don't feel bad you believe. Let all live and love in their way as long as it isn't harmful to themselves and others.
Please consider the Grude, the Patient, Jimmy, 46 & 2, Eulogy, Invincible and Descending.... to name a few.
Welcome back Pastor Rob and Gauge!
I stumbled upon you about 2 years ago haha and seen ya did a Tool song...NGL, was wanting and waiting for you to address this song by them since it seems you like them quite a bit :)...Gonna watch now!
Just remember your reaction to Wings for Marie where Maynard more or less found peace (for lack of a better word) with God in the wake of his mother’s death. Also a lot of his anger with religion stemmed specifically from the church his mother attended.
I love your breakdowns on Tool..
This video is not even two days old and there’s already almost 400 comments.. This forum is open and welcoming to all in any opinion perspective and or take on the subject. I think this has more reach than a church service as the subject and topic of matter intrigues both believers and nonbelievers to converse eight and give respective perspectives. I think each time you guys do a video it’s more effective than a Sunday service as far as allowing more opinions to be shared and heard which in turn I believe generates more depth And honesty from within the people. Great take guys
Welcome back! Honestly this song is 30 years old, I'm inclined to believe based on his later work that his ideas have matured and evolved.
They did just release a new version of this song…
You are very wrong
Kennith Copeland is currently justifying his private jets to his gullible magic believers.
Roe vs Wade was just overturned by the Christian theocracy.
This song is more relevant than ever.
@@TheScorpionCarpenter so true! I’m sure Maynard thinks this too.
@@TheScorpionCarpenter there's plenty of valid criticisms about how the church is run and many of its followers and that's coming from me as a believer. But you should know since the other side always preaches it, the actions of some don't represent the entire group
Welcome back guys always good to see you reaction videos and really loved the discussion on this song, I grew up in a Christian family and my parents would argue about church when I was 10 and my mom wouldn’t come to church, found out later it was because she got burnt by a pastor at a church, she had since now moved on and they are still going to church today and their faith is strong in Jesus.
Thought this was relevant 👇🏻
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”
Romans 15:4 NIV
Good to have u back Gents 👌
Hi Awesome review! I'm a Christian and love Tool. I haven't heard in full the latest album. My theory (just mine) from learning about Mayard and how his mom (a Christian) suffered I think really effected him. Possibly that's where his anger, sadness, disappointment and rage stems from. She wasn't physically healed and he had to watch her go through that. Blessings to you for your music ministry.
Terri
Thanks for watching! We actually reviewed his song about his Mom on the channel. It’s called “Judith” by a perfect circle if you haven’t heard it before. He basically mocks her faith. We have a pretty good discussion about it if I recall. It was actually one of our first videos on the channel.
@@roberthoughton7127 Fear Inoculum is the "final chapter" in MJK's journey through faith.
Faith as a concept is for idiots. Love and forgiveness and empathy is what your jesus was trying to teach, not blind faith
Welcome back!
Welcome back! 🤟
If you want to do another anti Christian tool review. The song "Eulogy" is also another interesting one.
I like hearing your takes on them.
I'm personally atheist yet have respect for Christians that actually have faith and follow the words they claim to believe in.
It actually bothers me a lot when I see church's or religious organizations pander to the way society has become. Although I might be an atheist it bothers me to the core to see churches go against the bible.
I think part of Maynard's disdain was his experience with those specific churches or groups. Ones that exploit peoples fear for personal gain.
Yes, Eulogy is imo the point where Tool rekindle this idea, but more specifically through one man.
On a side note (it sometimes appears) Pastor Rob wants to pick Maynard apart, but in reality, as the band name suggests, their music and vocals is working as a “tool” for his own discernment and overall success of this account. Albeit, also for our own listening pleasure! Pastor Rob hasn’t had 20-30 years to digest the big picture in these songs as some of us have. He’s feeling the rhythm though! 🥁 🎸 🎤 🎶
Eulogy isn't really christian I would say more about scientology and false prophets
@@Superdog-gr5yh from a interview...
"The song's about tendencies, NOT about a specific individual. It's about tendencies of people wanting to stand on a soap box and sacrifice themselves in some way. We don't need that process anymore. You're on your own now."
While it's not specifically about Jesus... Jesus definitely counts in the meaning.
Eulogy is about Ron L Hubbard and scientology
@@jerredwayne8401 I just used a direct quote from Maynard in the comment just above yours.
Nice to have you back Pastor. How's your wife doing? I praying for a full recovery soon.
Pastor Rob, u rock!! Love you brother!!
Let's go Pastor Rob! This is a great lesson on false teachers and manipulation. Something that is not talked about often enough.
"Let God be true and every man a liar". Never confuse the evils of man for the goodness of God.
God bless you pastor! Keep up the great work
Welcome back brothers ...Tool time. again...God bless
Wooooooo they are back thank you
That early comparison to FNM/RHCP is very astute & fair. If people hate you for that, they must listen more :)
Glad y’all are back. If you want some obscure Christian rock/metal Project 86 song Oculus. It’s one of my favorites and just hits different.
You really need to do this video again with the new version of Opiate called opiate2(squared). Soooo worth it. Feel you'd appreciate it.
I’m an atheist and massive tool fan. I came across your channel a few months ago and I really like the way you guys discuss music, especially tool. This is a band that is ferocious about thinking for yourself along with a healthy dose of humour. Very dark humour at times but still, humour. This song is a remake of one of their earliest songs and I suspect Maynard’s mothers betrayal by her church after her stroke had a lot to do with his thinking. Young and angry. I believe this song was written in the time of mega manipulative and obviously fake televangelists (plenty around today as well). The flock that these clearly manipulative preachers (you know the ones) attract seem to be extremely gullible and trusting, handing over life savings for another private jet. I think this song is aimed at these scam preachers and the unthinking masses that line their pews every Sunday.
agree, but they're ALL scam preachers
Maynard and Tool make several digs at L. Ron Hubbard for example...
Yeah, it's closer to Metallica's "Holier Than Thou" or Iron Maiden's "Holy Smoke" than even say Judith, despite being an earlier song.
This was the original. Not the remake.
@@nothertreeinbox you’re right, my mistake.
I think the is song ties heavily into how the church he went to as a child shunned his mom because of her sickness.
I love how he sang this at the sociology center in the 90s. Fuck what they wanted, do what he wanted and didn't care. Maynard is an amazing human being.
Super awesome to see that you guys are back! Can you guys listen to the newer Demon Hunter songs, perchance?
Opiate is the song that started my live of Tool. As an 11 year old dealing with some S.A. from my grandfather who would then make me attend church the next day, I was confused and struggling so very much. Maynard really helped me through some very dark years between Tool and A perfect circle. I can't thank them enough as I'm still here.
Great to see you back, I think you guys should react to War of Ages, Collapse.
Welcome back!
I would love for you guys to check out Memphis May Fire! Blood & Water, Your Turn, or The American Dream are some great tracks they recently released!
I've been waiting for them to do this song
Good to see you boys back, even if we don't agree on everything! The bass sounded different because of a entirely different person than the majority of their career. I thought this would be a rough song to approach theologically. But, I'm glad you discussed the practice of using religion for manipulation. The anger and sarcasm you see toward religion stems in part from this.
So great see y’all back! Really recommend phinehas new album (the fire itself) y’all should check it out and review it!
Missed you guys. Hope God is blessing your family with your wife's health.
When will you guys have Navy or Grey colored Black Cross Distressed Vintage Cotton Twill Cap back on your website? They have been out of stock ages :( I want both so badly!
Welcome back guys I've missed you. Adelaide bear here AKA Ben Murray AKA guitar bear
Welcome back guys! Finally some good content to watch. You should do episode 666 by in flames next
I really enjoy your breakdowns. Tool has been a sort of conundrum to me as well. I think Tool does a good job of articulating common views and counter points to things such as religion.
Discernment is important and I appreciate your channel!
Pastor your break down is awesome. God is merciful, and has a plan. Trust his timing.
Yessss finally they have returned!!!!!!
Welcome back
Yea the lyrics give me the chills. They put it around such awesome music. It’s like when you realize what he’s saying your like this guy has a real issue with christianity but considering what i heard I don’t blame him.
I guess I don’t blame him if he’s basing his opinion on headlines. Glade teachers and hypocrites have done a good job making a mockery of us.
@@roberthoughton7127 unfortunately it was more on a personal level/ private one i think. Specifically more fundamentalist/evangelical or cultish figures. Do not think he has issues with your average Christian.
I think alot of it goes back to his mother, her extreme faith, illness, death and that you hit the nail on the head in that hes honing in on those who seek control, power, personal gain and abuse, manipulate etc which you may find in religion but sadly in anything where control, trust or authority is implied and open to misuse by not so good people.
Always love your discussions after the music as much or more than the songs, thanks!
@@FreeRangeHuman1 yup 100%
That's the problem... It's not Christianity itself but the bad people running certain groups. The movie the "The Book of Eli" puts it really well. The man running the city wants it for the power the words will give him.
While the character Denzel plays actually believes and wants it to be used for good.
@@roberthoughton7127 the headlines are a reality for alot of people.
@@roberthoughton7127 If you change the context of the lyrics as God saying them to the listener, it has a completely different meaning. yes MJK is anti God and those lyrics were meant to diss religion but what the enemy meant for evil God meant for good. Pastors and all of Gods people need to RESPOND (take time to meditate and digest with discernment) instead of immediately reacting.
This is the best episode video seen so far.
Pastor Rob and Gauge, sup y’all. Been a minute.
Pastor, your beard is beautiful. I haven’t even watched the video yet. Had to comment. I’m jealous.
😂 Thanks.
Just wanted to let you know that he's not mocking or challenging God at any point in this song. The entire song is directed at those who use it to take advantage of people. There's alot more to it but I'll allow you to come to that knowledge on your own.
