To put this song into a bit more perspective this was written in 1992 before Judith probably when he was the most outspoken regarding the church but if you look at his discography spanning all three of his bands you can see how his view has softened quite a bit and his lyrics shift towards people and not theology.

I think it would be cool for your channel if you did a recap video with the information people tell you and maybe a little personal digging to accompany the initial reaction videos because a lot of the songs at face value sound extreme and often lyrically can be dark themed but a little digging can change the whole meaning behind a song when you understand the situation around it.

One thing to keep in mind is that Houghton's religious beliefs dictate that you will "burn in a lake of fire" after your death because you do not believe as he does. For some reason, we give religious people with extreme views a pass because they're not yelling and screaming that you're going to burn. They sound nice, but they say heinous things in a friendly way. He does believe you're going to burn. We non-believers can laugh about that, but Houghton is very serious about you going to hell. That's how "respectful" he is.

How often are Christians that open minded to darker music? A girl I knew stopped talking to me because I played that song when it came out and she thought I worshipped the devil.
One thing to help reframe… keep in mind this is the evolution of Maynard… to hear him resolve his issues with Christianity in 10,000 Days and his spirituality since… it really frames his growth.

Logic and reason is what helped me realize that WE DON'T KNOW the ORIGIN or PURPOSE of our EXISTENCE, and that it is up to us individually to determine our own self worth and purpose in life. That there NO PROOF OF THE EXISTENCE OF ANYTHING SUPERNATURAL WITHIN OUR NATURAL WORLD. That our ancient ancestors created and propagated the gods to the masses(Opiate for the Masses) of mostly uneducated and illiterate people who could not read or write, and who were too ignorant to have the ability to "discern" between what was real or imagined. Like many Christians growing up in church, I was told what to think and believe about "God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit," and I was strongly discouraged from questioning religious authority, because that would mean my faith was weak. It took quite a few years of researching verifiable history to DEPROGRAM away from religion, and to finally understand that man created the gods and religion(s) in order to attempt to explain the unexplainable, such as natural disasters(hurricanes, tornados, flooding, exploding volcanoes, etc.), and so they could exert control over the masses of people. There are 15 different typological versions of Jesus Christos, the Savior Messiah. RELIGION is a TOOL designed to control people, and unfortunately some who claim religious authority over others have been know to use, abuse and exploit their followers, whether it be ideological, monetary, sexually, etc. Of course non-religious people also use other methods of mind control and some have been known to manipulate people to do their bidding. So needless to say, I'm now Agnostic Atheist, and very happy to be free from the grips of religion. I realized that I don't need a religion or its god to be a good and decent human being, and to live a good life. I don't fear a heaven or a hell because I am no longer convinced that they even exist. There are over 3000 different gods throughout the world, and over 100 splintered sects of Christianity, of which many went to war and murdered each other over there differences in interpretations, for example the Nicene Creed, derived from the Council of Nicea, and then the Great Schism, (the war of religious ideology between the Holy Roman Empire and the Eastern Orthodox Church because they could not agree on the dynamic peranterters of the Holy Trinity(God, Jesus, Holy Spirit). Also the war between the Catholics and Protestants of Great Britain. These well documented, verifiable events proved to me that man created their gods, and that man has fallen well short of defining our true existence. The search for the truth continues. My philosophy for life is to understand that we are imperfect beings who are capable of good and evil, and it is in our best interest to try our best to be a good and decent human being to ourselves and to others, because humans' lives are very short and insignificant compared to the unknown vastness of our universe. Yea any religion is unbelievable and has no proof, but especially evangelicalism as its only been around for a couple hundred years the fact that they have any faith in that to me is preposterous I used to be catholic before turning atheist and at least that religion is over 1000 years old I mean come on people wake up
Coincidentally, my wife and I just went down the Wings (part 1) and 10,000 days (part 2) rabbit role yesterday! We watched your reaction video and a couple others, and read the lyrics. We had a long conversation about how MJK was hurt by the church at an early age, and that pain impacted him in such a profound way. All that he went through in seeing his mom (who he viewed as an angel) suffering, and maintaining her faith through it all, both inspired him and angered him. He didn't understand. He used that pain and anger to fuel some of the greatest art of our generation. It's sad that it had to come from such a dark place. But, he has been able to express himself, and through that, as his career has matured, and he has been able to heal, you can see that he seems to be in a healthy place now, both emotionally and spiritually. I pray for him. His artist talent and genius is undeniable. I pray that some day he will understand why his mother had such a deep faith in Her savior, and perhaps even he will accept God's grace and truth for himself.
I’ve prayed for him ever since seeing them at lalapalooza ( oh wow 98? Getting old here lol) He came out dressed as a televangelist holding a Bible cursing God. Influenced The Whole crowd to do so as well. Sad to see. Changed me forever.

This was Tools very first EP. They were young. Maynard had a much more jaded view of religion back then, but as time has gone by you will find it has loosened up a bit. I believe him to be very spiritual, but weary of following an “organized” religion.
I love how he sang this at the sociology center in the 90s. Fuck what they wanted, do what he wanted and didn't care. Maynard is an amazing human being.
They just went to the effort of releasing an updated and remade version of this song ... something tells me this particular view of theirs (or Maynard's, as the case may be) hasn't evolved that much over the years.

My theory (just mine) from learning about Mayard and how his mom (a Christian) suffered I think really effected him. Possibly that's where his anger, sadness, disappointment and rage stems from. Thanks for watching! We actually reviewed his song about his Mom on the channel. It’s called “Judith” by a perfect circle if you haven’t heard it before. He basically mocks her faith. We have a pretty good discussion about it if I recall. It was actually one of our first videos on the channel.
Just remember your reaction to Wings for Marie where Maynard more or less found peace (for lack of a better word) with God in the wake of his mother’s death. Also a lot of his anger with religion stemmed specifically from the church his mother attended.
I’m an atheist and massive tool fan. I came across your channel a few months ago and I really like the way you guys discuss music, especially tool. This is a band that is ferocious about thinking for yourself along with a healthy dose of humour. Very dark humour at times but still, humour. This song is a remake of one of their earliest songs and I suspect Maynard’s mothers betrayal by her church after her stroke had a lot to do with his thinking. Young and angry. I believe this song was written in the time of mega manipulative and obviously fake televangelists (plenty around today as well). The flock that these clearly manipulative preachers (you know the ones) attract seem to be extremely gullible and trusting, handing over life savings for another private jet. I think this song is aimed at these scam preachers and the unthinking masses that line their pews every Sunday.

If you want to do another anti Christian tool review. The song "Eulogy" is also another interesting one. I like hearing your takes on them. I'm personally atheist yet have respect for Christians that actually have faith and follow the words they claim to believe in. It actually bothers me a lot when I see church's or religious organizations pander to the way society has become. Although I might be an atheist it bothers me to the core to see churches go against the bible. I think part of Maynard's disdain was his experience with those specific churches or groups. Ones that exploit peoples fear for personal gain.
Yes, Eulogy is imo the point where Tool rekindle this idea, but more specifically through one man. On a side note (it sometimes appears) Pastor Rob wants to pick Maynard apart, but in reality, as the band name suggests, their music and vocals is working as a “tool” for his own discernment and overall success of this account. Albeit, also for our own listening pleasure! Pastor Rob hasn’t had 20-30 years to digest the big picture in these songs as some of us have. He’s feeling the rhythm though! 🥁 🎸 🎤 🎶

This forum is open and welcoming to all in any opinion perspective and or take on the subject. I think this has more reach than a church service as the subject and topic of matter intrigues both believers and nonbelievers to converse eight and give respective perspectives. Opiate is the song that started my live of Tool. As an 11 year old dealing with some S.A. from my grandfather who would then make me attend church the next day, I was confused and struggling so very much. Maynard really helped me through some very dark years between Tool and A perfect circle. I can't thank them enough as I'm still here.

I don't know if this 100% true but I've heard that the reason Maynard uses the lyrics he does (sarcasm, vileness, etc.) is to weed out those who would choose to be offended instead of pushing past them to hear the message he's actually talking about. Kinda like "if you're gonna get offended and be turned away by something as silly as "bad language" or "adult subjects", you're not ready for what I'm actually saying. What I'm talking about requires one to be able to question themselves. If you can't get past *how* someone delivers their message, you've already judged the messenger and probably also view their ideas as not worthy of true consideration." Like a bouncer for a place where ideas are discussed; if you can't prove that you're an adult who values message over delivery, you ain't getting in.
I love how he speaks out on hypocrisy, more specifically the power of one abusing The Word for their personal gain, not to spread the actual holiness of it.

The man running the city wants it for the power the words will give him. While the character Denzel plays actually believes and wants it to be used for good.

I really appreciate your take on this and many other songs. I am a fan of tool and I am also a Christian. Like you mentioned I agree with a lot of the message in this song. Everything Maynard criticizes the church for I completely agree with it. There are far too many manipulative toxic vipers that bury themselves in churches especially certain denominations (I’m looking at you Catholics) and there are many people who don’t do any free thinking at all. “ I show up to church on Sunday I do what the preacher tells me all is good”. Never mind the fact that your son is addicted to drugs your daughter is a single mom and your spouse is unsatisfied in the marriage because talking about any important issues makes you uncomfortable. I have seen far too many of these situations play out in a church and supposed Christian families that were full of toxicity and abuse. Yet I am still Christian and my faith is strong. The end many will cry out to him Lord Lord and he will turn them all away saying “I know thee not”. Most of the arguments these atheist make dogging on religion and the church, many faithful Christians agree with. We see it too. But the hypocrisy and the perversion does not take away from the truth of his word and the sacrifice that was made. That perfect sacrifice so that we might all have a hope eternal life in heaven.

Also by this situation the words "Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now" get another meaning as these are words from the person abused and manipulated, he was promised by this other person that his god will save him and now this person realized he was abused and manipulated and his god never save him. I believe is more of a critic to the church and how it has manipulated people for the last hundreds of years not so much the Christianity itself. It is a real situation and by the time the song was released people don't even bother to think this was a massive problem on the whole world, fathers and pastors abusing children and people using religion as a way to achieve their darkest desires, they usually talk like what MJK wrote, this is their way to manipulate people. I've always interpreted this song as about the abuse of power by some people in religious (specifically Christian here) positions. Actors claiming that they know God's true will, that they are God's vessel of speech and message, and that they (the person, not God) will save them, If they only just give themselves over, not to God but to the man. As youre a pastor, I hope you can agree that prosperity gospel preachers are disgusting thieves, and they do not have the direct line to your God that they claim.
Let's go Pastor Rob! This is a great lesson on false teachers and manipulation. Something that is not talked about often enough. "Let God be true and every man a liar". Never confuse the evils of man for the goodness of God. God bless you pastor! Keep up the great work
The Lyrics are absolutely great in this song. Faithful believer in Christ or not. There ARE some religious leaders in this world that abuse and use their position. It isn't so much anti christian as anti abuser. And yes this happens in all walks of life...l'd say more often in secular circles in 2022. However the lyrics calling out Jesus are also great...many people feel this way. Jesus does not manifest in their lives at all. So why not ask him to save them and reveal himself in some way.

Both are pioneers of so called death / doom and gothic metal. From My Dying Bride would recommend newer song Tired of Tears - song you might find very dear. It's about vocalists very personal experience with cancer (spoiler: there was a happy end to this story) and from Paradise Lost their 90's classic Forever Failure. How often are Christians that open minded to darker music? A girl I knew stopped talking to me because I played that song when it came out and she thought I worshipped the devil.

Logic and reason is what helped me realize that WE DON'T KNOW the ORIGIN or PURPOSE of our EXISTENCE, and that it is up to us individually to determine our own self worth and purpose in life. That there NO PROOF OF THE EXISTENCE OF ANYTHING SUPERNATURAL WITHIN OUR NATURAL WORLD. That our ancient ancestors created and propagated the gods to the masses(Opiate for the Masses) of mostly uneducated and illiterate people who could not read or write, and who were too ignorant to have the ability to "discern" between what was real or imagined. Like many Christians growing up in church, I was told what to think and believe about "God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit," and I was strongly discouraged from questioning religious authority, because that would mean my faith was weak. It took quite a few years of researching verifiable history to DEPROGRAM away from religion, and to finally understand that man created the gods and religion(s) in order to attempt to explain the unexplainable, such as natural disasters(hurricanes, tornados, flooding, exploding volcanoes, etc.), and so they could exert control over the masses of people. There are 15 different typological versions of Jesus Christos, the Savior Messiah. RELIGION is a TOOL designed to control people, and unfortunately some who claim religious authority over others have been know to use, abuse and exploit their followers, whether it be ideological, monetary, sexually, etc. Of course non-religious people also use other methods of mind control and some have been known to manipulate people to do their bidding. So needless to say, I'm now Agnostic Atheist, and very happy to be free from the grips of religion. I realized that I don't need a religion or its god to be a good and decent human being, and to live a good life. I don't fear a heaven or a hell because I am no longer convinced that they even exist. There are over 3000 different gods throughout the world, and over 100 splintered sects of Christianity, of which many went to war and murdered each other over there differences in interpretations, for example the Nicene Creed, derived from the Council of Nicea, and then the Great Schism, (the war of religious ideology between the Holy Roman Empire and the Eastern Orthodox Church because they could not agree on the dynamic peranterters of the Holy Trinity(God, Jesus, Holy Spirit). Also the war between the Catholics and Protestants of Great Britain. These well documented, verifiable events proved to me that man created their gods, and that man has fallen well short of defining our true existence. The search for the truth continues. My philosophy for life is to understand that we are imperfect beings who are capable of good and evil, and it is in our best interest to try our best to be a good and decent human being to ourselves and to others, because humans' lives are very short and insignificant compared to the unknown vastness of our universe. The journey continues.
Yea any religion is unbelievable and has no proof, but especially evangelicalism as its only been around for a couple hundred years the fact that they have any faith in that to me is preposterous I used to be catholic before turning atheist and at least that religion is over 1000 years old I mean come on people wake up
Coincidentally, my wife and I just went down the Wings (part 1) and 10,000 days (part 2) rabbit role yesterday! We watched your reaction video and a couple others, and read the lyrics. We had a long conversation about how MJK was hurt by the church at an early age, and that pain impacted him in such a profound way. All that he went through in seeing his mom (who he viewed as an angel) suffering, and maintaining her faith through it all, both inspired him and angered him. He didn't understand. He used that pain and anger to fuel some of the greatest art of our generation. It's sad that it had to come from such a dark place. But, he has been able to express himself, and through that, as his career has matured, and he has been able to heal, you can see that he seems to be in a healthy place now, both emotionally and spiritually. I pray for him. His artist talent and genius is undeniable. I pray that some day he will understand why his mother had such a deep faith in Her savior, and perhaps even he will accept God's grace and truth for himself.

This was Tools very first EP. They were young. Maynard had a much more jaded view of religion back then, but as time has gone by you will find it has loosened up a bit. I believe him to be very spiritual, but weary of following an “organized” religion.
I love how he sang this at the sociology center in the 90s. Fuck what they wanted, do what he wanted and didn't care. Maynard is an amazing human being.
What you need to realise is this is early Tool. Filled with rage and anger.

Hi Awesome review! I'm a Christian and love Tool. I haven't heard in full the latest album. My theory (just mine) from learning about Mayard and how his mom (a Christian) suffered I think really effected him. Possibly that's where his anger, sadness, disappointment and rage stems from. She wasn't physically healed and he had to watch her go through that. Blessings to you for your music ministry.

I’m an atheist and massive tool fan. I came across your channel a few months ago and I really like the way you guys discuss music, especially tool. This is a band that is ferocious about thinking for yourself along with a healthy dose of humour. Very dark humour at times but still, humour. This song is a remake of one of their earliest songs and I suspect Maynard’s mothers betrayal by her church after her stroke had a lot to do with his thinking. Young and angry. I believe this song was written in the time of mega manipulative and obviously fake televangelists (plenty around today as well). The flock that these clearly manipulative preachers (you know the ones) attract seem to be extremely gullible and trusting, handing over life savings for another private jet. I think this song is aimed at these scam preachers and the unthinking masses that line their pews every Sunday.

It actually bothers me a lot when I see church's or religious organizations pander to the way society has become. Although I might be an atheist it bothers me to the core to see churches go against the bible.
I think part of Maynard's disdain was his experience with those specific churches or groups. Ones that exploit peoples fear for personal gain.
Yes, Eulogy is imo the point where Tool rekindle this idea, but more specifically through one man.
On a side note (it sometimes appears) Pastor Rob wants to pick Maynard apart, but in reality, as the band name suggests, their music and vocals is working as a “tool” for his own discernment and overall success of this account. This video is not even two days old and there’s already almost 400 comments.. This forum is open and welcoming to all in any opinion perspective and or take on the subject. I think this has more reach than a church service as the subject and topic of matter intrigues both believers and nonbelievers to converse eight and give respective perspectives. I think each time you guys do a video it’s more effective than a Sunday service as far as allowing more opinions to be shared and heard which in turn I believe generates more depth And honesty from within the people. Opiate is the song that started my live of Tool. As an 11 year old dealing with some S.A. from my grandfather who would then make me attend church the next day, I was confused and struggling so very much. Maynard really helped me through some very dark years between Tool and A perfect circle. I can't thank them enough as I'm still here.

I don't know if this 100% true but I've heard that the reason Maynard uses the lyrics he does (sarcasm, vileness, etc.) is to weed out those who would choose to be offended instead of pushing past them to hear the message he's actually talking about.
Kinda like "if you're gonna get offended and be turned away by something as silly as "bad language" or "adult subjects", you're not ready for what I'm actually saying. What I'm talking about requires one to be able to question themselves. If you can't get past *how* someone delivers their message, you've already judged the messenger and probably also view their ideas as not worthy of true consideration."

Pastors and all of Gods people need to RESPOND (take time to meditate and digest with discernment) instead of immediately reacting.
I really appreciate your take on this and many other songs. I am a fan of tool and I am also a Christian. Like you mentioned I agree with a lot of the message in this song. Everything Maynard criticizes the church for I completely agree with it. There are far too many manipulative toxic vipers that bury themselves in churches especially certain denominations (I’m looking at you Catholics) and there are many people who don’t do any free thinking at all. “ I show up to church on Sunday I do what the preacher tells me all is good”. Never mind the fact that your son is addicted to drugs your daughter is a single mom and your spouse is unsatisfied in the marriage because talking about any important issues makes you uncomfortable.
I have seen far too many of these situations play out in a church and supposed Christian families that were full of toxicity and abuse. Yet I am still Christian and my faith is strong.
The end many will cry out to him Lord Lord and he will turn them all away saying “I know thee not”. Most of the arguments these atheist make dogging on religion and the church, many faithful Christians agree with. We see it too.
But the hypocrisy and the perversion does not take away from the truth of his word and the sacrifice that was made. That perfect sacrifice so that we might all have a hope eternal life in heaven.

I noticed that maybe you guys did not notice that MJK thought to write this lyrics from the perspective of a person been abused and manipulated using religion as a manipulation tool.
Also by this situation the words "Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now" get another meaning as these are words from the person abused and manipulated, he was promised by this other person that his god will save him and now this person realized he was abused and manipulated and his god never save him.
I believe is more of a critic to the church and how it has manipulated people for the last hundreds of years not so much the Christianity itself. It is a real situation and by the time the song was released people don't even bother to think this was a massive problem on the whole world, fathers and pastors abusing children and people using religion as a way to achieve their darkest desires, they usually talk like what MJK wrote, this is their way to manipulate people.

I've always interpreted this song as about the abuse of power by some people in religious (specifically Christian here) positions. Actors claiming that they know God's true will, that they are God's vessel of speech and message, and that they (the person, not God) will save them, If they only just give themselves over, not to God but to the man.
As youre a pastor, I hope you can agree that prosperity gospel preachers are disgusting thieves, and they do not have the direct line to your God that they claim.

The Lyrics are absolutely great in this song. Faithful believer in Christ or not. There ARE some religious leaders in this world that abuse and use their position. It isn't so much anti christian as anti abuser. And yes this happens in all walks of life...l'd say more often in secular circles in 2022. However the lyrics calling out Jesus are also great...many people feel this way. Jesus does not manifest in their lives at all. So why not ask him to save them and reveal himself in some way.

I’m class of ‘94 and I agree with Gage’s assessment of influences and sound. And I’ve watched enough of your reactions to know how the Preacher would counter. Y’all’s insight is refreshing and it feels good that their believers like myself that can appreciate the music but still have their own beliefs that can gives the means to question even counter what is being sung. Both are pioneers of so called death / doom and gothic metal. From My Dying Bride would recommend newer song Tired of Tears - song you might find very dear. It's about vocalists very personal experience with cancer (spoiler: there was a happy end to this story) and from Paradise Lost their 90's classic Forever Failure.
