In my opinion, "Opiate Squared" is like a retelling of the song by Tool in their present state. It is the song, but it's so much more as well. they poured their knowledge and skill BACK into this song and it's amazing to experience, in my opinion.

Honestly I don't think they've ever been satisfied with a lot of opiate and undertow. Those two albums are the root of they're disdain for record labels pressuring and rushing them to release albums before the band was satisfied with the music
ALL DRUMS WERE PLAYED BY DANNY IN ONE TAKE, DANNY DOESN'T DO EDITING, HE PLAYS THE WHOLE SONG MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY USE THE BEST ONE. ACTUALLY EVEN THE SOUND ENGINEERS WERE SAYING THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE THEY WERE 2 DRUMMERS, BUT NO, IT IS JUST DANNY AND HIS 8 ARMS.
No need to explain to retards. If they went to a show or did some research they’d see that this band is world class. Best live show out there rn.
Playing a song multiple times til u get it right is doing multiple takes my guy....
I figured it out. Tool is great because they all give each other room to sound incredible.
Still a fan of the raw ambition that fuels the older version. But this one is born out of the accumulation of years of experience, fine tuned to a silver point. I love that Tool revisited this gem and polished it! 💗

Its fitting that they reimagined opiate because their biggest gripe is being rushed to release the first 2 albums before they felt that they were done. They're not fully satisfied with a lot of the early material
There corded undertow in 2 weeks and they actually wrote 3 songs for the album in that 2 week period as well. They were pressured to release an album in less than a years time from opiate being released
I've been listening to Opiate for 17 years and have heard the original song probably thousands of times at this point, but I have to say that the remake is soooo much better. It's incredible. It made me tear up hearing it. It's so refreshing to hear a remake of a song I've been listening to for so long. I am in debt of this band and for how much of an impact they have made on my life.
I feel the same way. I had no idea they have been playing this version at concerts for the last several years, butI finally got to see them for the first time at the end of January. When they played this I was surprised and then when they released this recording I said, "I've heard this version before!"
Maynard has been using the slow section to talk to the crowd so getting to hear it "uninterrupted" so to say, was a treat.

The original Opiate hidden track's official title is called "The Gaping Lotus" btw. I love what Justin brings to the table here on bass, so different than Paul's sound. This is pure brilliance and it's just a reinterpretation of the original. I kinda wished they would remake the entire Opiate album just for kicks
This gives me hope that they’ll do the extended version of “Stinkfist” with Adam’s solo and have it out on streaming

I want the original version of Disposition, Reflection and Triad. Originally this was one long song and it's inclusion in the album made the whole time run pass 80mins.
CDs can only go to 80mins so they went back to the drawing board and made this one song into 3 songs that changed from the original.
In 98’ they did long stinkfist jams with Buzz

They're in Fear Inoculum mode probably when it was written/recorded. They just wanted to do it for anniversary. Doubt it'd been on that album.

I would pay a premium for a re-recorded modern version of Jerk-Off but still with the crowd in the background and the opening dialog.

That clip at the beginning was from my first Tool concert (Lewiston Maine, 98) SO grateful that someone captured it on film and uploaded it.
they used to do a song called Merkaba that was a HUUUUUGE intro to Sober during live shows. thats another that needs to be done studio style

Just came back from Louisville on 3-4 to see them for the 22nd time and it was the best live set I've seen yet. Just amazing as always and they played Sober for this show and everyone went nuts ofcourse. And we got "Tool confetti " dropped on us for this one too. All around just amazing and just released my stress and took me to another place. The best band that has ever been and ever will be!!!!!!

I was at that one! KFC Yum is a great venue. Perfect sound and clean. And as far as releasing stress man I started sobbing the first 10 seconds they started playing. The energy, anticipation, ugly merch primitive energy before even finding our seat lol. Tool experiences are therapy, church, wizardry all in one. Plus the confetti during culling Voices was maybe the most beautiful thing I've ever seen at a concert

I don't think there's a "better version". There's one for inspiration and one for energy.
Love the new breakdown bit, Adam has got that textured reverb set to latch mode which adds so much ambiance.
They started playing this version live since ‘14 they have a extended Stinkfist as well as Schism both songs now have drum solos basically.

The way their reaction was upon the beginning of the song, to the point where they became lost in the instrumental part was the same psychedelic experience I had upon this song. I'm so glad these guys made a reaction upon Opiate² for it was nice seeing them about a year ago react to the first Opiate track. This video is amazing, and the songs they choose to sit down and give time to listen is amazing. Great video!

This version, with its music video, were recorded back in 2014-2015. About 4 years before Fear Inoculum. At the time they were performing a very early version of Descending live.
It’s like if the Coen brothers remade The Big Lebowski. Not sure why it needed to be done or how I feel about it.

Considering the feel and overall theme of the song, Original is like a flashier, harder, more zealot-like message....where Squared is like a decades-long, power realized, king-back-on-his-throne feel.

Seen this version live a few times. There are several songs they've added parts to for tours. Stinkfist is another I can think of off hand.
The rearranged live Stinkfist really tricked people into screaming the lyrics. I noticed towards the last few years, audiences have caught on and expected that version live.
I love the original for the raw feel. There are really no effects to his voice, it is all Maynard!! This is still really great - but - it's more polished and his voice has some additional filters and effects that make it feel a little different.
The song is on a special edition vinyl of Fear Inoculum that is coming out soon. It's not from a new album. Preorder is on sale now,get yours.😁

TOOL originally wanted to release the songs from Opiate and Undertow on one album, that’s why Crawl Away and Sober are on their demo tape but not on Opiate. Those two songs are on Undertow. But, the record label needed to release something, anything. So they released an EP.

You (or anyone) have still not reacted to the J.C. Dobbs live recording from the very early 90s. It's an amazing performance and there are PLENTY of fans who'd like to see said reaction. It makes ZERO sense that no one has reacted to it yet.
You could get multiple videos out of it to continue Tool Tuesdays.

They played this version in 2016 at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento.
This is the version that they play live, at least recently, i saw them in 2017 and this is literally the same song with a few minor tweaks
I first saw Tool in the early 90s, when they were touring the Opiate album. They didn't have much material yet, so they played everything and just blew that building away. That was one of the best shows I ever saw, and I ended up seeing Tool about 6 or 7 times over the next years. This is still my favorite Tool song, and one of their many songs that took swipes at religion. You can never get enough Tool. There isn't enough Tool.
Don’t forget guys, the opiate album is a shorter format for the songs, this is a remastered version of old songs just stuff they cut out but they put back in for the remix

I'm pretty sure that this is a re-recording with Justin on bass and not a re-mix. Also, the video for this is supposed to drop today, 3/10/2022 which is exactly 30 years since they dropped the original "Opiate", 3/10/1992. 30 years also represents Saturn's return which Maynard references in "The Grudge".

Idk about a “reimagined” album. BUT they could put out studio recordings of songs they have done differently live like Stinkfist (extended), Schism (extended) and my favorite Prison Sex OTRM! If you haven’t heard Prison Sex OTRM you need to! Maynard has an extra verse on that!

Oh yeah - they used to do an Opiate/Flood medley live. Saw that at Red Rocks.
Saw them Thursday and Tuesday and I’m still riding that high. They played this Thursday but swapped it out for Sober Tuesday in Grand Rapids. Maynard’s “hometown” show. Both nights were the best ever. Incredible!

Ok.. Few things.
1) Can't decide favorite between the two versions, but I am very happy the new version exists.
2) You guys appear to fear that the law of "diminishing returns" will apply to Tool songs. Yes, to a degree, but once you hit about a 90% return, it levels off and you will be very old before even another 5% drop, so fear not, listen to Tool everyday.
3) Interesting idea about the remix/remake album.
Oh, popped in my head. What about more Jack White? You got multiple bands to choose from there besides The White Stripes.

I used to sit in my Mustang outside of my friend/drug dealer's house all day/night sniffing percocets and smoking blunts. I'd listen to Tool and Pink Floyd and various other songs. I'd be so high, I could barely hold my eyes open. I'd spend a couple hundred dollars on pills.
I got a daughter now so I had to chill out. I still get high but it's only like once every 3 or 4 months now. I was never an addict. I was always in full control. I quit cold turkey, no withdrawals. I just liked getting super high.

I still haven't' decided if I like this new live version recording better than the original. It's absolutely easier to hear everything and the breakdown is incredible, for damn sure.
It has a lot of fear inoculum in it so I can see how newer fans like it. Me being ogt back from ‘92 the first ep think it’s ok but the original can’t be beat

This falls under the same thing as Pushit and Third Eye off Salival vs Studio album versions. I love both versions equally as much and don't get caught up in which is "better". It's just amazing Tool can re-imagine songs that are already badass and still make a equally badass yet different song. I love the middle instrumentals on Opiate2
you guys should listen to sober live but on the 2022 tour they make it sound like fear Inoculum in my opinion

@@kristaspecht Yes Eugene Oregon. They did FI first then Opiate. Such a great concert. I saw the last one in 2020 in Portland and Eugene was supposed to be the following night but of course it was all shut down after the Portland concert. Wort the wait though.
