These guys have been active in various bands for 5 to 10 years before this EP dropped. These guys just have the magic chemistry together. Even after Paul left and Justin stepped in they didn't even miss a Beat.
I agree 10000000% the album 10,000 days alone is an emotional rollercoaster with the songs "10,000 days" and "Wings for Marie". I can't listen to either of those songs without crying. Doesn't matter who I'm with or where I am. Tears are happening. End of story
Little background before entering God mode with Tool. Maynard grew up watching his mom suffer an unthinkable existence and he blamed God, while his mother’s faith was unwavering. Ironically, as Maynard grows through his band and even his faith, he has saved countless lives through his music. His mother would be proud. Obviously there’s more for you to dig up, but just a start for you. Spiral out!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Opiate is about Religion and how "Religion is the opiate of the masses", In other words, religion acts as a drug for society. It pacifies and dazzles people without actually providing anything of real substance.
@yourfavoritedxrkskin A lot of there music is dark or crude but it's represents real problems and there beats work with the Fibonacci sequence, Like the Lateralus song and album
IMO you’re partially correct. I do not believe Maynard would say religion has provided “nothing” of real substance. He’s too intelligent to view things in such black and white terms. However, religion has certainly been used as a tool (no pun intended) by many people over the centuries to gain power and control over others. That, to me, is the aspect of religion “Opiate” is focused on.
So happy you did this Album. Everyone skips it, but it's amazing. It's Tool at it's loudest. Listening to Tools albums in order is great cause you can see the evolution album to album. They start very angry and slowly become more intelligent, meditative, and the music just keeps getting better and better. Lateralus is one of the best albums ever IMO, and Tool is the only artist I can say has NEVER made 1 bad songs. Even their outakes on Salival are better then some bands best songs. If you do Salival (which you should) it's after AEnima, before Lateralus.
Bruh, I fuckin love this!! I’m 41 and was introduced to TOOL when I was 14 by one of my Martial Art instructors. She would put on Opiate and make us spar for the entire song. Then she took me to see them at Toads Place for my 1st time when they toured for the AEnima album. She was a badass, and would absolutely love seeing your introduction to her favorite band. Kudos my dude
People who bash Tool for being overrated are hypocrites. They accuse fans of blind loyalty while being blindly dismissive. As the great Max Cavalera said, “Open up your mind and go your own way.” If you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t.
Since you are in the early 90s of TOOL music, GO check out Green Jello - Attack of the Cereal Killers Album. It has the singer and drummer of TOOL on this specific album.
The song Opiate is from the perspective of a priest I believe, which is why he’s justifying his actions with God. The rape part could be literal, but you could think of it more so as a metaphor for making people submit. Also, the title Opiate is a reference to the quote, “Religion is the opiate of the masses.” This meaning that religion pacifies people instead of providing them with anything useful. I could probably go more in-depth, but that’s all you need to understand most of the lyrics. The ‘outro’ is called The Gaping Lotus Experience, and I’m 99% sure it’s just a troll.
If you get stuck on the “rape” line in the song Opiate, don’t worry, it’s not a sexual reference. The whole theme of the song is based on Marxism and the quote from Karl Marx was “Religion is the opium for the masses”. Basically means everyone is addicted to something and these people are willing to let an ideology rape their minds and souls because they just don’t know any better and that’s how they were raised. I’m sure everyone has their own translations but that’s the general idea. Love your work, bro. I get excited seeing your enthusiasm and passion for life and art. I hope and believe that you are going to achieve the goals that you have set for yourself and I can’t wait to see it happen.
If you're enjoying this and thinking this goes hard, I'm mischievously grinning at the prospect of your brain turning into goo for the next albums... You just entered a black hole you can't escape from. Spiral out.
I can’t wait for you to react to their fourth album it’s one of my all time favorite albums🙏🙏‼️‼️ Also I lowkey wish you were able to read the lyrics from the other bands now that you fixed it especially with Slipknot first two albums but keep those reactions coming in my man🙏😂‼️
@Mintis-bh4rr why is everyone blaming youtube for copyright law? UA-cam has to follow the law or they will be sued. The song Sweat was in a movie called Escape from L.A. they think they own the song. Every other Tool song seems to be fine.

It’s only cuz UA-cam made me mute the song or else I’d have no vid

It looks like UA-cam jacked the video on the first song which is weird, idk why the rest would be fine.

Don't skip the Salival album, it has one of the best vocal performances by Maynard. It's the live version of PUSHIT.
