  • Dr John's distinctive brand of "voodoo" blues combining his inventive piano playing, gravelly voice and the pure essence of New Orleans has made him both a much admired and much loved character in a career that stretches over forty years.
Dr John has graced the Montreux stage on six occasions. He decided that this concert from 1995 was the one he most wanted to see released in our Live At Montreux series. It is an exceptional performance and includes classic tracks such as Iko Iko and Right Place, Wrong Time.

That first 1/2 minute when the other musicians and singers play in front of an empty big black grand piano, then here comes Dr. John out from backstage with his cane and tears the place up. WOW

Dr. John put on one of the best concerts I've seen in my 50 plus years of concert going. From the start with the band showing off it's talent and chemistry, to the good Dr's strutting debonair walk to the stage through the crowd, the entire evening was about the music and having a celebration together. IMHO, he's one of the most funky players ever, and his absence will be felt deeply. R. I. P.

If this doesn't make you like jazz/funk fusion nothing will! Dr. John was a genius at the keys and singing both. He truly is the ambassador musician of New Orleans. His influences and reverence for the greats including Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong are profound to him as he said in an interview that was the most genuine I've ever seen. His "voodoo" blues are an amazing contribution to Jazz. I'm going to find out if there is a tribute band that covers Dr. John in New Orleans. It wouldn't be a trip there if there is one to see and take in. God bless you Mac in the heavens you are greatly missed but we know you are having a big party with all the greats that have left us before.

With all of his various talents combined, his piano playing .just elevates everything. It just oozes style, technique and talent. And he really knows his jazz chords, not just boogie piano chords, I-IV, V stuff. He will be missed....he's right up there level with Ramsey Lewis and the rest of the jazz talents...[from a musician].RIP

Dr. John was the coolest of the cool. Had hundreds of songs. Hot rhythms&grooves. Followed him since the 60s. Never put out a bad record, why,? because he was "BAD"!!! Here at Montreaux he's with a first class musical machine, what he deserves! He walked on gilded splinters and showed the world his Nawlins roots. An American Treasure in heaven with Satch and all the other Legends!
