2024 now and still enjoying all of these classics from the master of the New Orleans style. Thanks for posting! What a great personality and talent Dr John was! RIP and thanks for your music.
They call me drJohn, known as the night tripper. You know I'm the last of the best. they call me the gris gris man. Ah got my satchel of' gris gris in my hand. You got love trouble....ya got a bad woman ya can't control...ah got jus' the thang fer ye. A little something called 'controllin' hearts get together drops.' Gris gris gumbo ya ya.........
Wow...........I miss the Dr....I got to see him live many times and for my birthday one year my daughter got me tickets to see him along with Etta James. But wait.......it gets better. She got me backstage and I got to meet the good Dr, and Etta. Watching him from backstage was other worldly. Got an autograph and Mardi Gras Beads from the Zulu Crewe from that year, 2000. Best birthday present EVER. I first discovered him in 1967 thanks to my then boyfriend. Thank you Steve.......still listening in 2024. The day he died....I cried......Love you Mac.
I can not for the life of me understand why the bass player seems not to be having fun. Even if you're sight-reading the gig, that had to be a blast, playing that music.
@@dsnodgrass4843 About the bass player: not everybody has the same expression on their face, when they enjoy stuff. People, who think, they can read other peoples souls, is what sentences innocent people to death.
It blew me away when, on Somethin' You Got, on the first chorus of his piano solo, he played Melvin Lastie's trumpet solo on the song "I Know." I play that solo myself when the band I play with does "I Know."
It takes an enormous reservoir of cool to be in the midst of all that TV technical crew, and not seem even a little tightened-up and self-conscious about doing your thing. The Doctor was on a whole 'nother level.
Sometimes only the good doctor will do - and this is a great session, good from beginning to end. I first came upon the doctor in the 60s with his hippy trippy stuff (which went down well with a joint or two) but it is really his rock solid piano that I have fallen in love with (and this performance has that in spades). Thanks Eric Ranzoni
He was a very under rated Musician His style and professional piano playing blows Elton John Out Of The Water, R.I.P My Friend You're Music Will Live On.. Cheers New Orleans.. 2022.
Loved Dr John, lucky enough to see home live twice; but perhaps not fair to compare him with Elton John …. So different. Elton was English classically trained and wrote his own tunes from England in the 60’s … Dr John is Mr New Orleans …. Totally different background, and music 🤷♂️ Both great
Good lord, the inevitable “they were so underrated” comment. Dr. John was highly rated and well known both here and abroad (and a living legend and icon in his hometown of NO) for what, 50 years or more? There are New Orleans musicians that don’t get the credit they deserve, but Dr. John I don’t think is one of them.
Elton couldn't play Dr John's style as there are lots of 10ths in the left hand - Elton said he can barely cover an octave. Elton was great in his genre but Mac Rebennack had a unique New Orleans style..
Had to be 1981 heard he was to play at a Local bar and eatery. Orchard Park, N.Y. I was Correct! Stood 10 feet from Mac that evening while he performed on a 12"inch riser in front of me! Man what a show! I was so, so Happy I caught that show. Rip Mac. You are so Missed!
Allen Thoussaint, Profesor Longhair y Dr. John. Que más puedo pedir?
Eric thank you! What a treasure of great music by an incredible artist. First time I saw the "Night Tripper" was at the Apollo Theater in the late 70s. What great memories! Awesome upload!
I saw Dr. John play with a band here in NYC at the Blue Note in early 1997, and he played "Wild Honey." I loved it, but I've been unable to find any evidence of that song even existing since then. Thanks so much for uploading this wonderful footage of one of my musical heroes, grazie mille!
i love that album it was the only album of his i had (on vinyl) from way back then ... i got it recntly from some place but it was indeed hard to track down on cd ... its all on her and full of great tunes

Saluti! Rob - UD
If you are watching this video right now 2023, I swear you’re a legend. Enjoy the greatness of dr. John!!

Splendid. If this is just a copy of an old VHS tape, ah jezz cou'nt believe mah eaz.

I swear that bass player sounds just like a tuba. The Dr. Is on high ground tonight. RIP Mac!
Pure New Orleans. No music like it in the world. Reaches right to your soul. Gone much too soon. God rest your soul Reb.
Beyond fantastic! But it's not "pure New Orleans". It's a melding of dixieland, ragtime, blues, rock, and modern jazz that only Mac could pull off.
This is transcendent. Dr. John is a musical shaman…

The players are excellent. Love the drummer's timing.
I can not for the life of me understand why the bass player seems not to be having fun. Even if you're sight-reading the gig, that had to be a blast, playing that music.
Probably because the drumms spoil the gig, there is no need for drumms, playing Dr john sophisticated left hand and an bass player
@@katalonien8696 Have you never been to New Orleans? Funky drummers, pianists, and sax players are their most well-know exports.
@@davidkindred7677 So true.

Thanks for saving this... A maestro at the peak of his powers, though they didn't diminish much over the next 30 years...
It blew me away when, on Somethin' You Got, on the first chorus of his piano solo, he played Melvin Lastie's trumpet solo on the song "I Know." I play that solo myself when the band I play with does "I Know."
And then Cry Me a River on the solo on Georgia on my Mind. He was the king of mixing it up
When I got the blues, Dr. John is my remedy. I love this show!

He's like a one-man rhythm and horn section.
Grande! Quando la Rai valeva qualcosa. Grazie!
Simply the best so glad i met Dr john will never forget such a night
His Music is always the best Aay Time ❤❤
If you don't love this, you should see a real doctor asap. THANK YOU Eric!
Wow ! ….,…., …..?…….Just Wow!!!
Thank you sooooo much !!
Thanks so much for uploading this. Sadly, I don't think the production on any of his albums was able to capture the magic of his live performances.
Very true. Either he, or maybe his producers, had terrible judgement in the studio.
Totally agree. A magic is lost.
This is so great, thanks for posting. Miss the good doctor. Still brings so much joy.
This is why UA-cam is awesome. Thanks so much for uploading this Eric, really great stuff that would otherwise not see the light of day!
You're welcome, it's a great pleasure to share this with all music lovers.
@@eric669 yeah, eric,Eric, so much. I've listened to this thing twice..

Elton is no dunce on keys- the NOLA
style is quite unique, and no snap to put together expertly. Even being from there is no guarantee...

What a treasure you've provided just in time for the anniversary of his death. Thank you!
You're very welcome Paula. You're right, I've just realised that today it's one year since the great Doctor's passing, so what a fitting tribute!
