My mum told me that I came into the world with Dr John playing in her hospital room. He was the first thing I would of heard in the world. Not a bad way to come into being.

Literally one of the greatest piano performances of all time. Perfect collision of style , syncopation, joy and master class playing. There was only Dr John.
I remember this song from the 70s and it was a high point for me. I was playing piano at the time it came out and Dr. John was my hero and still is. I would have loved to study under him.
This man was such a beautiful sublime creator of music with that New Orleans stamp on it. One of the best concerts I ever attended. The great Dr comes strutting towards the stage with a cane and the attitude on display that everyone knew that the time had arrived for a party of the ages commanded by the good Dr. It's a pity that his reputation hasn't been more widely known. A unique individual following in the traditional New Orleans love of music.
I met the good doctor down in New Orleans as my BIL was good friends with him. He said hello sir I’m John. I was shaking ( I’m a professional bassist) so meeting folks usually is fun and a treat but this late afternoon he was already dressed from head to toe and of course very high too. Kept calling me young man which was crazy since I’m in my mid 60’s now. BTW he talks just like he sings. A memory I’ll never forget.
Damn!!! This man really knew how to blow the roof off...Crazy woman dancing on the walls and ceiling here!!! Such a night indeed. Such a master, absolutely. 🎼🎹🎹🎼
A thought just occurred to me: did Dr John ever play with Ray Charles? I'm looking that up after this. They should have being so cool on the keys. The intro to this has to be one of the most beautiful and uplifting things any of us can experience. We miss you greatly Mac, rest easy and thank you for your gift of music. we will feel your spirit is with us always when we listen.
This performance was recorded on NPR's Mountain Stage Broadcast. Engineered by Francis Fisher January 8, 1989. The Mountain Stage Band is providing the backing. May he rest in the peace of all the joy he gave to so many people....
so so many times, never a half ass perfermance, which after all the years and many many times I saw the doc, he was NEVER off even a little bit. And for a man who was so wrapped up in his drug use, its absolutely amazing. The music trannscended everything. Just like it should. Thank you for everything Doc. I will always remember and love you my friend. You were as good as it gets!
Thanks for sharing that! I saw him 'round about that time give or take a year at Bumbershoots in Seattle, outside on a Friday afternoon. He played solo to a smallish crowd (maybe a 100 people?) as it was still Friday, for at least a couple of hours, to our utter delight. He did a very similar version of this tune at the time, and it's great to hear that again!
PLEASE tell me that that is more than just one piano player in that intro.....my God, how does he do that? And now I confess; I got to work briefly with Mac when I was an engineer at Criteria in the early 70's. Never will I forget the night I walked into studio B where Mac was totally alone, way back in the corner at the Hammond B-3 with just one light on and shining down on him as he played the most incredible stuff I ever heard. I was mesmerized by his playing that New Orleans style that defies all musical laws, swinging dotted eights with one hand and straight 4-4 with the other. The man is a freak of musical nature.
Hi Chuck, that's just Dr John alone at the piano. Wow! what a great life experience and memory you had being up close in person with Dr John while he was playing the B3.
The best night of music I ever enjoyed was at Tipitina's in NOLA years ago. Went to see the good Doctor. He was supposed to start at 11:00 but in NOLA that's just a suggestion. He showed up about 12:30 all by himself.. He sat down at the piano and said in his raspy voice, "Anyting ya'll wanna hear jus write it on a nakkin and sen it on up." And then he started in. He played for the NEXT THREE HOURS. NOLA funk, show tunes, classical...UNBELIEVABLE! Then he said, "I'm kynna dry. Gonna get somethin to drink an then I'll be back..." Half an hour later he was back at the keyboard and when he finished that set IT WAS 7:30 IN THE MORNING!!! People were on their way to work. I don't think he ever repeated a song the whole time and I bet there weren't a half dozen people who left during the night. And it was all for a $5 entrance fee!!! INCREDIBLE
How can anybody not like his music.Dr. John will be sorely missed. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. I know God is enjoying what we’ve enjoyed for so many years.
I'm in my late 60's, trying to gain both weight & strength to prepare for a vital surgery, and living about a mile or two from my home in a PT/Rehab center. I knew of Dr. John practically from the get-go, as I was stationed on the Gulf Coast in the early 70's. But now that I'm here after all this time, it's safe to say that he was never really on my mind a whole lot. I must have been suffering from some kind of mental deficiency back then! This guy was a monster talent! This one song is a lifetime's worth of music lessons, combined with a show of talent & palpable charisma & stage energy unparalleled in history. PERIOD.
Whenever I need to feel good I have to listen to this recording...makes my heart sing. Thank you Dr. John for all the beauty you brought to the world with your magical piano and voice. I bet you're singing and making lots of angels happy up in heaven.....
Love Dr. John! Thank you so much for posting this wonderful tune! I lived in New Orleans in 1974 and was married to a musician. We even got an invite to Allen Toussaint's private party and it was wonderful fun, with some of the greatest talent in the world! By the way, his house was lovely too, good food, good music, great people!
Makes me sad listening to this these days - what a great performer he was. Love his music, and was lucky enough to see him a couple of times in the 00s. The pleasure his music has given is immeasurable.
All I can say is a fantastic performance from one of the greatest musicians we have ever had. Dr. John lives on in all our hearts. I truly envy those of you who saw him live and really wish I had.
I remember commiserating with him on his facebook page over the loss of Fats Domino, another Nola great. The good Doctor was not only an amazing musician but had so much respect for fellow musicians, New Orleans and his many fans. Now he's gone and I don't know who we're all going to commiserate with. Thanks for the wonderful music, and your wit and humanity, Doc. You always had the right prescription. Rest easy.
RIP MAC REBENNACK Dr. John was a musician's musician. One of the best of all time. He exuded the heartbeat of this mortal coil and provided a stained glass window to the human soul. Playing his music loud today in tribute.
Always loved listening to Dr. John …first in my 67 mustang back in 75 & on intro on SNL …it was always “Such a nite “ and I always make it part of my music space today …rest in peace Dr.John and save a spot for me up there ❤
All too often overlooked by images of voo-doo and his uniquely cool character, this man's magnificent musicianship allows him to deliver the goods, regardless of genre! Mac truly CAN play it all. And his love for the people of Nawlinz is the frosting on his humanitarianism cake. May God bless you, Dr. John.
Someone may come along you'll love just as much; just not in the same way. Your job is to find them soon; before public indifference silences them forever. It's a real danger, in 2019; so much other culture drowns musicians out that it's incredible we get any new ones at all. If love the Doctor's music; save his style: support a low-level practitioner of it.
Back in the early 80's Dr. did a Homespun recording on "New Orleans Piano". Classic stuff that I have listened to many times and have absorbed well enough to affect my own piano playing so much! I'll always love his stuff--and you can tell how much Doc loves music, especially the music born from his home town, Nawlins! Saw him several times--in San Francisco, Detroit Blues Festival, Ann Arbor Michigan Theatre and other places. Thank you Doc, and RIP!
I purchased Dr. John's album "Gumbo" when I belonged to a record club. I didn't know anything about him. After listening to that tape I was hooked on his musical style. We used to play that tape and dance all over the house. It goes without saying that more albums were purchased. "In a Sentimental Mood" is another favorite. Such a Night" is a downright awesome tune. I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice and dancing to his music. Wonderful memories.
Rest in Peace Doctor John. Thanks for doing those Homespun cassettes back in the day about New Orleans Piano which introduced the world's piano players to the style and introducing James Booker to me. We all love you.
I just my grandpa this link and he was telling me about how he went to see him a bunch of times with my grandma and how his shows were just a big party. Cheers to you Dr. John everytime I hear your music I think of my grandpa and how blessed I am to have him in my life. Thank you for the music night tripper.
"Such a Night" is a song you hear a few times when you're young, it doesn't, um, stick, but it stays with you, in the back of your mind. Then one day you think "what are those words? "if you don't want to, somebody else will', and you start searching for the song. Wow, wonderful beautiful track. And, sadly, the time gone by.
As has been said you have to go out and find it, its there, its just that the music industry sold its soul to the devil and just wants manufactured mega buck making crap so you never hear the REAL music played from the HEART for the SOUL.
Saw him at the St. Bernard Civic Center in the early Seventies. He played the guitar a bit that night in addition to his piano. He was wearing his famous white tux and top hat back then. Then 15 years later I saw him in a small nightclub setting in Georgia. RIP Mac, I love ya still!
So glad i met you finally after 20 years and the chat we had and i got to hold the famous voodoo walking stick of yours Doc . R.I.P. my friend . Today is an incredibly sad day for me and the world . Thankyou for your inspiration

+Blues Piano Sheets Thanks for uploading this great piece of Mac's work. Really good brother looking out at the Bayou at Night with the boat dock lights dancing on the water.
It is a great performance by the good Doctor. One of the best ever on the Mountain Stage Radio Show and one of the best efforts by the show's house band. Here's a little applause for the boys in the band....
My mum told me that I came into the world with Dr John playing in her hospital room. He was the first thing I would of heard in the world. Not a bad way to come into being.
Amen! Brother. Amen!
Wow that is just brilliant
I hope she was in the right place at the right time!

I'll bet you'd have a. Great Time with the piano.part !
Dr. John was a legend among his musical peers but never got the wide recognition he so richly deserved. A true American treasure.

That is truth. But ,it was a part of his charisma and personality!✌🎹
He got the recognition from the ones that mattered to him. But he did deserve superstardom

I learned about him from the HBO show Treme. I am glad I got to see him perform live at least once before he past on.

Who DAT! dat is right!
That is just perfect! I went to see him in concert with BB King while I was pregnant and my son kicked the whole time. I like to think he was dancing.
Absolutely. I've listened to tons of Dr. John performances, but from a piano point of view this is among the very best. Jaw dropping stuff.
AMAZING
That ole Dr John . Joy since the 70’s . RIP. Such a blues man!
Sounds like 3 piano players… he was one of a kind!

I’m thinking about learning piano , esp now!

Just a stellar version. The piano of course, but also his voice sounds as good as I ever heard it. RIP Mac.

Such A Night ... such a gift from God this one of a kind musician ... so glad this version was recorded
Such a big light in the world blinked out when he died. Rest easy, Mac. You were one hell of a blessing.
I'm so glad I got a chance to see Dr John in person before he died. It was at the Charlotte Jazz Festival in 1993, and he brought the house down!

That soul , that swagger, that style. There will never be another one like Dr. John. May you have the jam of all jams in piano heaven.

"Such A Night" by Dr. John is so 'timeless' it could have been written in the 1930's, 40's, 50's.
If our world was about to end and we know its coming, I want this song playing in preparation to be joining the party where Dr John is in the heavens.
Sooo sad music will never be the same Dr John!!
no , never ever !
The good Doctor always has the cure, and never failed to lift my spirits and put a smile on my face. Rest In Peace old friend
And no one else could do it...so glad you did! RIP
It is a great performance by the good Doctor. One of the best ever on the Mountain Stage Radio Show and one of the best efforts by the show's house band. Here's a little applause for the boys in the band....
Dr. John..what a cool cat. Highly underrated & we’ll never see anyone that comes close to him ❤️
I thought his performance on the "Last Waltz" was immortal!
Absolutely
It is, but as a piano player myself, this version absolutely blew me away. Stunning from first note to last.
