As an (elerctrical) engineer I think you accuratly highlighted the difficultys that most people will enconter by undergoing this upgrade. It is daunting and not meant for someone who wants to have a clear set of plans to implement. I will be going throuugh this process because I do chec the 3 boxes you mention, wish me luck!
Nice video my friend. Glad you persisted and made it through the other side. As others have commented, a simple smart switch will give you the remaining functionality you, and many others, desire. I use the TP link kasa brand, and they’ve worked quite well for me over the years. You can set prescheduled turn on/off times. There is also an option for auto shut off which is nice if you ever forget to make coffee or forget to turn it off. There’s also a current runtime which will tell you how long the machine has been preheating. PLEASE THOUGH, MOVE YOUR PETG CASE OFF THE TOP OF YOUR BOILER! Even though PETG melts much higher than the boiler gets, it’s glass transition temp is only around 80-85°C, which the boiler easily exceeds. It may not be apparent right away, but you are degrading the case and the components inside every time you use your modded machine like this. Your cases going to look like it was a Salvador Dalí painting on your boiler sooner or later.
great overview of the process. i have all the parts sitting ready for a rainy day (or week). for the HA, i have mine on a smart outlet switch that i use in the morning to get the machine on to warm up before i use it.

I see they have code for an ESP32 now with OTA updates and everything you'd expect from that platform, maybe that would be a better candidate for Home Assistant? And the MCU could absolutely be powered all the time and turn the machine on with a relay or SSR.
Home Assistant. Yes, that would be very cool. I've been using it for a few years. Nothing too advanced. Mostly as an "pretty" way to monitor temp, humidity, electricity consumtion/current monitoring. I can only imagine what having HA as an interface would look like. I'm just starting this project. For some reason it won't build (the blackpill STM version is what I'm using). I get the same three failures..."test,uart-esp, and uart-stm." I'm just learning about this stuff so I'm searching away for clues on how to fix this. I'm still waiting on a few parts but I figured, in the meantime, I should be able to (at least) flash the STM32 and the LCD display t6o make sure they're ready. Anyhow...I came across your video while hunting for answers to my problems. 🙂 Edit: I found the answer to my problem! I wasn't selecting the correct branch nor selecting the proper build. Like magic, it compiled and uploaded to the STM32. I was even able to flash the LCD panel.... and it works! I still waiting on the ADS1115 Module. Smart switch would work. Now PCB V2 / V3 is available 🎉 Mine is the Logo build too, but here is HK My part arrive is 1-2 days. So while I was waiting the PCB. I did the LEGOs build too. Now u can have all the fun to explore the best profile for ur coffee.
Something that helps me immensely when installing radios and remote start/alarm systems in cars, is BEFORE I start, I go through and find every single wire that I will need to mess with. Then, I mark them with little "flags" of tape, and write exactly what they are and where they go. I was planning on doing this project as well, so I will have to make sure I take my time in the beginning to come up with a good game plan. I also wanted to have the machine heat up for my morning alarm, then turn off when I leave for work. Is it not possible to leave the power switch "on" all the time, then connect the whole machine to a smart plug? Then you could simply control the power with the smart plug. I admit it makes me worried that you seem pretty competent, but still had trouble with it! I see he has added a donation button on the website to help hire a professional writer. I think that's a great idea. I have some very nice camera equipment, so perhaps I'll take some nice and clear photos when I tackle the project, so I can contribute to the community in some way.
Definitely an excelent idea with the flags. I should have done it. Yes, I am trying to plug it in a smart plug. But in EU and UK, they sell an ECO version, that you can't leave on. The power switch has a spring (so it is rather a button) - it will turn the machine on or off, but it will automatically turn off after some time. So if I turn on the power, it won't do anything. So I am right now trying to remove the ECO PCB, convert that to the version they sell in the US, and replace this automatism by a smart switch.. I am also trying to tidy up the wires and move the electronics enclosure to the side, based on helpful advice from the creators (of the project I mean ;) )

You could buy a esp8266 with a relay hat and use that in series with the ssr control. This would allow the machine to stay on but you could control through Tasmota etc. probably a lamp switch is as useful and easy.
for the home assistant you will need a different board (one with ethernet, either WiFi or Wired) and a different power wiring (one where the power keeps the board powered at all times, and the board controls when the rest of the machine receives power via a relay) ... on top of all of that you will need to program the interface between the Home Assistant and the board
I plan to integrate it on a Gaggia Baby. One question only, how does the coffee taste? High tech gadgets are beautiful, but the point is to make better coffee, something that you achieve by practise and more knowledge. I have already managed to make great coffee on a consistent basis. Does Gaggiuino improve consistency from someone's experience?

I've had my RANCILIO SILVIA V2 on HA for years, I put a Shelly 1 inside it. So it turns on to preheat when HA detects someone had a shower (humidity jump). I've designed a esphome pid to replace it, but yet to install it. Might give it a try now. I actually used pid to control a heat gun, for a temporary enclosure on my 3d printer.
Your guide is very helpful very clear and concise. i can follow every step till i can build and upload. Asking discord quite take time to be answered and there is no image on suggestion so i is extremly difficult for coffee rookies to follow suggestion even flashing board step.
I think they try to regulate it within a certain range. I guess it would be hard to keep it constant. But I did not write the code, so hard to say. There was some discussion about using PID regulation, that could IMHO have less variability. But the author rejects that quite firmly.
They are all included in the documenation. It's just not all of them were in the bill of material. So I suggest briefly check the whole documentation before the start. Said that, it has improved a lot lately, so it should be much easier.
You don't need a smart switch. You can add parallel power in Gaggia and the board. and add a relay in the Gaggia . so the board can always take power and control the Gaggia completely.

@@TFM-xk7wg There is a PCB version now, and I think you can buy it assembled. But frankly, my biggest struggle was to figure out what to disconnect and plug in, and you'll have to always do that. The machine was not designed for that, so it's not easy.
I just bought the Gaggia a couple of weeks ago and find this very interesting. I already did the 9 bar mod and a power switch mod (from shades of coffee) which basically makes this the north american version and connected it to a smart switch. I wonder if it would work with this although I don't know why it wouldn't if applied correctly. Probably going to wait until I undergo such a huge task but as an IT guy I'm very intreigued.

I would not say Arduino, but it does involve some soldering, making connectors, understanding schematics, connecting wires. It is an electronic mod. So for someone who just expects to buy an appliance and use it, I would not recommend it.

I did get there, eventually. I am sure you will too. Just make sure you label things so that you can always step back. And make no shortcuts - the quality of connectors and solderig is a key I think. Also, they keep improving the documentation quite fast :). Good luck.
@@bruxy70 Exactly my thoughts... I don't think it's too complex (at least without the scales) but due to the vibration pump and the heat everything you solder and crimp has to be neatly done. I got it working for a day, then I got temp reading problems... re-did it and then it worked... Then the pressure sensor went mad... In all cases it was a bad connection... It was a lot of fun but I hit a point where I wanted to throw everything out of the window! :D
This is a great modification for these machines. I wonder if the Microcontroller can run ESP32? Maybe you can add a ESP32 or similar inside the machine to control the machine a bit more? Not sure how much room is in the machine for ESP32 and additional relays

not the creator and I just finished the mod (havent poured a real shot outside of testing) but I'm fairly certain the brew light turns on when the boiler is at the desired temperature so you know when to hit the brew switch

At my first thought it might be easier with a mechanical timer and relays but I also have a building automation/controls background

@@bruxy70 Hi, You can remove the power switch, remove the rocking part and get rid of the spring, so you have a bistable switch.
