I just want to take this time to congratulate the people behind the youtube algorithm. It has send me in to a Gaggia trench of which I got out of 30 minutes ago with the purchase of a Classic E24 ~ good job.
I have been using a Gaggiuino for 6 months, and it has become my main machine, due to ease of use, reliability, and tasty shots. I also own a Bezzerra Strega, but it hardly get used now after the Gaggiuino. This machine highlights how computerization has the potential to transform the design of the espresso machine, which I would argue has mostly seen incremental improvements since the 1970s.
As an ex-barista thats adamantly refused to get a cheap espresso machine for the home, this project seems like it might be the thing to finally get me to have a machine. Very excited to put one of these together
I’ve got a Gagguino and love it - I will say it’s not very user friendly to build and there’s a lot more room for growth in that department. The people on the discord are helpful but I’ve found I’m constantly being told off for being in the wrong group for the wrong question- and the groups aren’t actually well labelled at all. But, I really do get the best steamed milked and most flavourful espresso I’ve ever had and the fact there are people out there just trying to help us have better coffee- pretty awesome. It’s clear they could make this into a massive business, and part of me hopes they do.
There are lots of people willing to help with installs in the Discord! Documentation is always improving, but keep in mind that everyone working on it does it as a volunteer in their spare time.

Amazing to see a video on the new updates! I have one too. I found the machine for around 200€ (maybe 210 or 220) on ebay, bought the stuff from AliExpress for around 100-150 I'd guess and have a killer machine now for such an amazing prize (predictive scales but not the tank meter installed). It's fun to see that back then when I saw your video about it I thaught "oh having this one day would be cool". And now here I am, having used my STM32 Lego build for about a year now and still enjoying it and having fun with it! It is legit the best thing you people can do to your gaggia! Thanks to the Gaggiuino Team for this Product basically and all the amazing help!

@@darkknight1877 yeah that's a valid point. For me I did the "Lego" build so I would have had to redo the wiring harness and also I wanted to save some cost. But if I started from scratch, for sure with the new release I would just go with the official PCB. (Also as a side note, if you are in the eu. I got my display from diyEFI, with all the BS charges that peakcoffe has the end cost is the same but since it's shipped from UK vs china it gets here faster. Also they handle the tax side, which if I remember correctly peakcoffee doesn't do).

But now they have closed the source code and you literally must buy a license (the screen module available only from two suppliers) to use this mod. Loved this! I bought a GCP last year with the thought that I would do this mod eventually. The latest version looks amazing. Probably will do the mod next year sometime. Thanks for the update on this really cool project!

Lance, thank you for all the comprehensive information you are providing to the community. Talking about "mods", can you please consider reviewing the BooKoo Espresso Monitor Sensor and Scale? Product seems interesting and can bring better information and profiling for classic E61 machines.
Amazing and comprehensive review. It would be great see more details around the profiles and the process for dialling in. Not much on UA-cam at the moment.
with v4 having wifi, it would be a no-brainer to get this integrated with Home Assistant for morning startup and boiler warming just before I get out of bed.
You could do this before by plugging in the machine to a smart plug and controlling it from HA. I use the ESPHome enabled ones from athome. Bonus of these is that they also measure and track power consumption which is quite nice. I use them now that I moved away from Gaggia with my Profitec Go.
@@artyemsie or, for the clear build you can put a ZigBee relay inside the machine. It was a complete sandbox when sources were available. Now you have a commercial product with a list of features you can't change.
Putting something like this in a Bambino would be amazing, I've already installed the dimmer mod + pressure gauge in mine. I've been tempted to pick up a Gaggia Pro myself, but it's hard to justify with my Bambino currently performing so well.
18:12 - Is that handle which holds the ground coffee modified? I have a Gaggia Classic from maybe around 2007-ish and find that the spouts get in the way of almost every cup or shotglass that I have. Apologies for poor terminology!
I've been putting it off for several months now waiting to see if my replacement Gaggia has any more issues but I think it's time. I like the larger screen.
Decent head to head will be interesting. I got my Decent in 2021 and it has been great. I think i would miss the thermo-block, but for the $3k price difference it is maybe hard to argue with the alternative.
Impeccable timing! I was looking at purchasing the new E24 version of the GCP. Do you think the new brass boiler is worth the $200 premium over a refurbished GCP?
The statement why they don't publish the source anymore makes absolutely no sense to me but it's their decision. Just hope they removed the GPL licensed linked libraries but the CC NC was already at odds with that i guess.
Agreed, seems like they just made a bunch of word salad so they can sell it without people copying them but whatever… looking forward to CleverCoffee becoming better known as I think the ESP32 is a better platform.
You are allowed to use GPL libraries in nonfree software. The license really only comes in to play when you're making modifications to the library itself.
@@kevinmccloy185they where statically linking a ton of libs (at least in the last publicly available source). arduino obviously doesn't even support dynamic linking 😂
I love that this exists and there is such an enthusiastic community behind it. It's definitely not something that interests me as a user; there are only so many variables I care to control, but as a former owner of a GCP it's simply astonishing!
You don't really have to care about messing with all these variables. It's simply amazing value for money, even if you stick the pre-configured recipes and never touch anything else.
Installed the previous version less than a year ago. Bigger screen and easier profile uploading is nice.. but I don’t think I’m sold on upgrading. The silent pump and built-in scale mods are worthwhile IMO. Not a lot of room under the portafilter for a Bluetooth scale.
This reminds me of the Hoffmann video on the ZPM machine and John Buckman taking it over and transforming it into the Decent DE1. In the interview he says that there was no way to make the ZPM out of the cheaper, off-the-shelf materials that they wanted to use and it was going to need all kinds of high quality, specialized parts. But here we have the most basic, mass produced machine using a few extra sensors and some clever coding to have it do almost the same as the DE1. I just wonder what the story is there: Whether it was Buckman just wanted to make a more expensive machine, or if it was something else.
watch the tear down of DE1 and you know why. Much more accuracy & better hardware. Ps: I own a Gaggiuino myself & for most of the Gaggiuino community - Decent is always on our wishlist.
Where did you find the confirmation? I was wondering the exact same thing seconds into the video. I got a killer deal on a RS V5 with the Auber PID already installed and don’t really want to part with it.
There’s got to be a way to do this mod on an Apex or Legato if Kafmasino is doing it. Wish Kafmasino would just sell there board and what not to upgrade them. Oh and I did brew an excellent Colombian from Fried Hats as a spro! Cheers Lance!
I've replaced my Gaggia Classic for an Ascaso Steel Duo half a year ago. This Video makes me kinda somewhat regret it, just because I really friggin love tinkering.
Is there a similar version for the Rancilio Silvia? I installed a PID on mine many years ago, buy would enjoy the new screen interface. My first machine was a Gaggia
Yup! Gaggiuino mod is fully compatible with Silvia machines. While documentation isn’t as full for Silvia as it is for Gaggia Classic / Pro, Silvia’s are the second most common platform for doing the Gaggiuino mod
Wait a second. I looked into Gagguino a few years ago and was nowhere near talented enough to do all the things it required on my own. I gave up and went with the Brew Better kit from Peter Horvath, and have been really happy with it. However, I’ve always wanted to get back to Gagguino. So you’re telling me for about $150, I can buy everything I need from Peak Coffee and all I have to do is install all the components? That seems like the dream.
That thing would actually be an even more interesting comparison to the Kafmasino One, since both cater to the same market while Gagguino is DIY and the Kafmasino is prebuildt. ^^
Hey Lance, I was curious if you could speak to the temperature stability via a Scace. Any video appears to show a fair deal of temperature stability during the shot and a spike at the end. Thanks!
great mod for gaggia i have latest version and really like it. discord group is a bit hard to get through 🙂 but no one said it is going to be easy. in terms of coffee it makes this machine much more useful and consistent. definitely do not recommend for people that want to drink espresso and don’t care for anything else it is just to complicated. But in general great adventure for coffee geeks and diy passionates.
The problem you might run into is workplace safety registrations. It won't pass any kind of compliance requirements, and there are a few risks involved: hot water, high pressure, electric shock, closed source software from a basically unknown vendor controlling a dangerous device. You absolutely don't want it to release 150C water/steam at the wrong time/place. I'm all for modding at home for yourself but I prefer my employer to follow safety standards.
Using the GCP as my first machine and I'm happy that there's this route that I can upgrade into. I wish I can get the time to try and understand how this is done, or just pay someone to do it for me. 😅
Get the Barista Gadgets PRO PID with the same capabilities, less parts, much easier to install and ease to reverse to original design to keep the warranty, cheaper and as a bonus you will get a better espresso in the cup!.
Hi Lance, thank you for that awesome Video! Could you make a Video about the different Profiles and make some coffee while tuning those profiles to your liking? Would be very interesting! Cheers☕️
Will be nice to see in a future video a comparison of this with the new Hibrew H10 Plus or tell your opinion if the hibrew will be a good alternative for people who don't have access to a Gaggia and skills needed for modifications.
Love mine. I haven't gotten to upgrade to the newest version because my gaggiuino is built into the KitchenAid dual boiler. They will eventually add dual boiler support to the new version though.
Hello would you rather getting the new version of the DF64V or the Sculptor 064s? Price wise they´re pretty similiar where I live. I want to change the burrs to the SSP Cast. I´d say it´s easier to do on the DF and the stronger Motor pushs me further in the direction of it. On the other hand the 064s has vertically mounted burrs and no ionizer, which can be used to catch fines. I primarily want to use it as filter first grinder. Nethertheless it´ll also be used for espresso. Already a great thanks for all responses!
Excellent!! I am wondering if a machine like that is capable of producing equally great shots as a lever like the Flair 58 or The Robot or La Pavoni? Considering is almost equal the budget (in the case of LP cheaper).
Lance, does this improve the consistency and reliability of the machine from shot to shot? Using my GCP, I ran into the issue of making two steamed milk drinks back to back. Both with the timing of the shot and the capability of steaming the milk. Will this mod improve that? And would this make the machine more capable of serving more drinks in an hour?
Hi Lance, I have a question. I since I’m travelling a lot I was always looking for an option to bring some coffee beans from place I went and make a good espresso at home. But since every bean is different it comes down to the grind settings and then brew temperature and all the settings within the machine. I was wondering if the Gagguino would be an option to optimise this? Is there a platform with brewing profiles for several beans which the machine can adapt to instantly without needing trying out too many shots and loosing all the beans? Like bringing beans back home from travel, set the grinder right and search for the brew profile. And that should give me a delicious espresso right away. Thanks a lot.

with v4 having wifi, it would be a no-brainer to get this integrated with Home Assistant for morning startup and boiler warming just before I get out of bed.
Interested to know as well!
Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you!
@kevinmccloy185 Nah except if the lib has a linking exception or is LGPL instead. Otherwise your program needs to also be GPL compatible.
@@goose-lw6js Dynamic linking is not derivation (as much as the FSF wants it to be)
@@kevinmccloy185they where statically linking a ton of libs (at least in the last publicly available source). arduino obviously doesn't even support dynamic linking 😂
Lance I was wondering if you plan on reviewing the new Gaggia E24 with the brass boiler
Ahahaha buckman definitely has some motives with what he's saying - and it's all about sales.
definitely going to get one ...when I'm not broke:)
The 1st Gaggiuino I install - was on Breville BES 970 dual Boiler, leave the temp. control as original. ( Only limit is the 90 sec shot time )
This latest iteration is very tempting.
This just made me check if I can mod my Rancilio Silvia.
Yes....yes, I can!
Where did you find the confirmation? I was wondering the exact same thing seconds into the video. I got a killer deal on a RS V5 with the Auber PID already installed and don’t really want to part with it.
@kpgramps3544 I just googled it and saw there's quite a lot of stuff. Mainly just PID. Didn't check yet whether you can go full Decent.
Are you sure? Cause im choosing between these two
There’s got to be a way to do this mod on an Apex or Legato if Kafmasino is doing it. Wish Kafmasino would just sell there board and what not to upgrade them.
Oh and I did brew an excellent Colombian from Fried Hats as a spro! Cheers Lance!
How Does this compare to Kafmasino ONE ?
bumping this up :)
The gaggia is a beast, i'm loving it and am just piss that the new one as brass boiler instead cause now i want to purchase it lol
I've replaced my Gaggia Classic for an Ascaso Steel Duo half a year ago.
This Video makes me kinda somewhat regret it, just because I really friggin love tinkering.
Looking forward to the decent comparison.
I don't even drink coffee but I'm pumped
Is there a similar version for the Rancilio Silvia? I installed a PID on mine many years ago, buy would enjoy the new screen interface. My first machine was a Gaggia
Yup! Gaggiuino mod is fully compatible with Silvia machines. While documentation isn’t as full for Silvia as it is for Gaggia Classic / Pro, Silvia’s are the second most common platform for doing the Gaggiuino mod
@2:30 Dang I have to not only be smart but also not be stupid
Im out
0 for 2
Wait a second.
Thank you for this video, i think i need to build this one😁
Isn’t the ball jointed steam wand standard on that version of the Gaggia Classic?
The Gaggia also often goes on sale under $400, I assume that will likely be the case for upcoming Black Friday as well.
Would this b suitable for a small office? To be used maybe 30 times a week? Or would that just fry the machine before too long 😬
Absolutely can
The problem you might run into is workplace safety registrations.
Hey Lance, do you use any of the billet baskets on the regular or do you prefer the older style baskets?
Using the GCP as my first machine and I'm happy that there's this route that I can upgrade into. I wish I can get the time to try and understand how this is done, or just pay someone to do it for me. 😅
this paired with the new brass boiler will be very nice
Would love to see a review on the bookoo soon, any thoughts in the meantime?
Me too!! Would also love to know how the scale + pressure monitor system works for something like the cafelat robot :)
This is so good! Could it be implemented to the Profitec Go?
Ripped Lance rulez
The Hibrew is half the price and half the functional features. I think it would be an unfair comparison
Can't wait to implement this on my lelit anna non pid.
Shot to shot consistency is one of the main purposes/goals of the Gaggiuino mod!
