BMW S 1000 XR Review | First Ride

- BMW placed its sensational inline-four superbike engine into a more upright and touring-focused package with its introductory 2015 S 1000 XR. Fast-forward and the Motorrad team applies the 2020 round of S 1000 RR technical updates to this liter-class XR. But where the superbike comes up short in areas, the XR stands out in its high-level refinement. This is a motorcycle that is adept at touring as it is bonzai sport riding.
--
When seated at the controls, the XR has a cozy yet commanding riding position. The handlebar is wide and offers just the right amount of rearward sweep. The Touring package adds plastic hand guards, which do a fine job of protecting your mitts from the elements. (A centerstand, luggage rack, and GPS mount are also included.)
The XR’s contoured seat holds the rider in place, yet allows for side-to-side movement for riders of average size. Larger folks may have a harder time moving however, due to the seat’s very deep dish. A two-position manually adjustable windscreen shields the rider from elements in high position. Riders who desire a “wind in the hair” experience can run the low position. The Dynamic package’s ($850) cruise control, heated grips, Gear Assist Shift Pro (electronic quickshifter), and electronic suspension make for a bike that is very touring friendly.
The aforementioned two features pay even greater dividends on twisty stretches of tarmac with it inhaling pavement with sportbike-like vigor. More agile than ever, the 500-some-pound Beemer affords 600cc sportbike-like levels of maneuverability on tight stretches of roadway. Optional electronic suspension with a wide range of automatic adjustment lets you firm, or soften, things up at a push of a button. BMW’s ESA has historically come up short but this latest edition is easily its best yet for general road and sport riding.
Twist the right grip and the XR’s superbike-based engine has some serious bark. The engine has a pleasing character with a rather loud engine note for a street-legal road bike. But you’re not going to hear us complain. Taller fourth, fifth, and sixth gears help this XR be more comfortable when logging freeway miles. Engine vibration is more muted than the previous iteration but still delivers more vibes than other traditional sport-touring bikes. Unlike the RR, this engine does not include BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve train.
Triple-disc hydraulic brakes keep speed in check and we adore the high level of feel that the brakes offer, especially at the rear. Be careful though; the rear brake is so powerful and sharp-feeling that it can be easy to overdo it, when ABS is disabled. Still, that’s a good problem to have…
In the electronics department, our XR was fitted with all the bells and whistles. Combined riding modes that alter throttle response and suspension-damping calibration, and adjustable engine-brake, wheelie, traction, and ABS control. Settings are manipulated via BMW’s now signature 6.5-inch color TFT display. The panel is endowed with crisp fonts and a slick interface. Although it lacks touchscreen function, the multiwheel control is easy to learn and offers menu synergy between models, which is helpful for Motorrad enthusiasts.
This allows the rider to tune the XR’s dynamic going from mild to wild with a few pushes of a button. Whereas the RR’s new electronics package is rough around the edges, the XR’s is more masterfully executed. Well done, BMW.
Smartphone users can also pair their phones with the BMW Motorrad Connected app, which allows turn-by-turn directions and other machine functions. It’s one of the more slick motorcycle apps we’ve used.
Some riders always want to go fast. And that’s who the 2020 S 1000 XR appeals to. Authentic sportbike-like handling, engine performance, and character, combined with more accommodating ergonomics make for a versatile mount that is worthy of garage space. The XR is the natural evolution of a sport-touring rig for motorcycle riders who don’t want to compromise in either segment.

Adam you asked for feedback: Of the hundreds of UA-cam bike presenters I think you're the best. Sharp, wise, fun, fair, crystal clear, a true bike expert and a joy to watch ride. You provide a real service to the motorcycling community and we're grateful.
Don’t change anything from this video man you nailed it across-the-board exceptionally enjoyable and of course that Mike kicks ass
I've done a lot of research on these, as it's definitely going to be my next bike. You taught me something I didn't know. The rear brake has not been mentioned in anything else I've seen. So thanks!
Great review Adam, and I appreciate what you’re doing for motorcyclist and for all of us. As a point of feedback it would be great to hear more specifics about the bike, especially the engine in this case when the differences between the double R and the XR are so important. A viewer could watch this review and get the impression it was the same engine as the double R.
Great narration and footage. Keep up the good work.
That review was an enjoyable workout. Very high facts per square cm. Like it!
That was a great video , one of the best overviews of this bike , very well done
Awesome review Adam! Incredible motorcycle!
Was you drooling on that bike a little bit? Excellent video excellent review you just keep getting better the more you do this. And that bike is dope!
Adam whatever you do don't change your natural delivery . Its clear from so many comments and followers that your unique style combine with fabtastic bike knowledge suits us all . Keep up the great work :)
i love this bike. a very practical choice for chillin and adrenaline
I like your reviews
Super neet review M. Waheed. The delivery was good, it was clear and straight forward. Keep it up and what a Bike !!!
Great review Adam!! Gonna go check out one of these!
After trying it i got the same "Excellent" feelings and ordered one. Amazing bike.
Nice Job, Quick and to the point... Thanks
great review!
it looks awesome!!
good job on the review! thumps up
i enjoyed this review.
What a colour man!
Great review. Considering the 2023 low suspension model.
great review
Awesome quick review! It made my breakfast taste better! Would love to see it with 3 hard cases - quickest touring bike ever lol. 👌🏼
VERY NICE VIDEO.....THE TALKING PACE WAS VERY GOOD AND THE RIDING VIDEO CLIPS MIXED WITH THE STATIONARY VIDEO CLIPS WERE AT THE RIGHT MIX.....I HAVE NEVER OWNED A BMW MOTORCYCLE.....BUT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THEM FOR A FEW YEARS NOW.....AND I GENERALLY LIKE THEM.....AND THIS HELPS ME DECIDE ON MAKING THE CHANGE FROM JAPANESE BIKES TO BMW BIKES.....THANKS.....
what a beautiful motorcycle
I still own 2016 XR and Love it
Adam the hair!!!!!! coooool man, still on the 2016 Rs but the 2018 Xr hp just came in to my garage, we ll see this fight.......
Eine tolle Maschine mit einem Spitzenfahrer (a great machine with a top driver) 🤗
Very unique. Not just unique. Like very awesome.
Sweet bike. Wish I could afford it
Great review Adam, thanks! The new styling it pretty unique, I like it. Looks almost low enough for short legged dudes like me. Interesting how they shrouded the radiator(s)....
With the ESA in Dynamic Pro mode, you can also change the ride height. He forgot to mention it in the video. I'm 5'5 and touched as well as I do on my Tracer 900.
Awesome bike 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video review, would you have any comments on the wind protection of the 2020 XR VS the 2019?
Good looking bike
i love that color
Thanks Adam! Prefer this to the Mc commute coverage, far more rounded.
Adam, how do you ever remember to touch on all these points? Even with notes, I could never remember to hit on the level of detail you go into. Great job as always.
No one reviews better than Adam waheed , I really loved the voice and the pace. This was one of the best reviews with high tempo music. Got me all excited. - From a current BMW Rider
Looks like something from Akira! I fuckin’ love it!! 😍
That TFT screen is insane! Would have liked to see the rear bags on it...
All motorbikez are death traps. This machine is simply waiting to waste somebody.
@@Glass_Nkoaa That's why a dolt who doesn't ride should stay in a cage.
Awesome! Hello from Vietnam ^^
Hello from Vienna! 😄
Looks nimble, like it handles surprisingly well. That TFT display is nice...
BMW TFT is best in the industry.
@@user-cx2bk6pm2f .
The video was the right length and pace.
Nice! Please consider reviewing the new Tenere 700 as well.
Did you rap or paint those black side panels ? That bike looks great, one thing I don’t like about the aesthetics of the 2022 is the ice grey panels with the big white XR letters on the small panel right by the BMW emblem. Not a huge deal but yours looks great. Awesome Review, thank you 👍
Had mine since April. Added the M carbon side blades (as Adam's demo bike has), full Akra exhaust this week, Brentune this week, Sargent re-worked seat this week, bar risers, lowered pegs.. hopefully this thing is gonna be the perfect machine. Anyone wants an update after this week, hit me up. If it doesn't go well after all the "upgrades / fixes", selling cheap! :)
** Anyone reading this and have a 2020 XR, DO THE BRENTUNE! I'm a hard-to-please person and the Brentune is seriously incredible. It's not just a small difference. It "fixes" the bike and the power is consistent starting from 2500rpm rather than 7500. It's is honestly amazing what they've done to this amazing engine. I really didn't like the bike and now I can't get enough of it. Hope this helps someone considering doing it..
@@autogenome9129 which stage you did?
how is the engine long term? I'm guessing its reliable since its based of the Suzuki k5 motor.
I want this for my next bike
How's the refinement, vibration, and seat comfort compared to the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 sx??
Quite a nice looking bike coming from someone who only really likes the modern sport bike look and some street bikes
How is the vibrations in the handle bars? It was something a lot of folks complained about in the Gen I of this bike. I love that colour. I have the shift assist pro on my 2019 RT and never use it.
The vibration was fixed on all 2018 and after models.
Who else owns this XR and still likes to watch these first ride videos? I know it makes me happy knowing I own it.
+1
How much was your 600 mile first service? The one where they unlock your ECM for full performance.
@@mundanemoments322 Service was about $400 which is about average in my part of the states. I will say that I cant say I feel a difference on performance and ive since ridden to about 5k miles. 6k service will be soon since I plan to hit that in about a month
🙋🏻
Cool 😎
Will there be another video once the break in limiter is removed?
The red is still available and a wonderful BMW Motorsport scheme fir 2021
Exceptional bike and if ordering, order one with the new M Enduro chain option.
What is so good about the chain?
@@jonasv19 no maintenance needed. No readjusting needed. No work needed.
@@sivvinod3187 Longer intervals maybe, but no maitenance, ever? Impossible
@H H very low maintenance. You won't have to maintain it yourself, BMW will do it for you, supposedly, it will work perfectly until it breaks (I guess, because all chains break someday)
@@jonasv19 Yes BMW claims same maintenance interval as shaft drive (and that's coming from a company with plenty of experience with shaft drives) So yes, for all intents and purposes, no maintenance. Ever.
Very interest rear tail light set up.
Why did they follow the Yamahs headlights(winking that everyone hated)? Where's the fuel?
I will buy one for myself
Nice bike but everyone complains about how hard that seat is and for this kind of money BMW must provide a better seat. Its still a nice bike but in this review there are no cons at all. Every bike has its pros and cons just be more open on that.
It`s not about a stiffness it's about a shape of seat and it is terrible.
@@rideroll9609 Just finished having my seat "fixed" by Sargent-- on its way back to me from Sargent as we speak. That seat was worse than a 1850 steam tractor seat.
You should try the seat on the original Tracer 900/FJ-09... They are medieval torture devices.
Looks like a big scooter.
Hey Adam, K1600 still doesn't have the TFT, in addition to the G310.
K1600 not having the TFT is ridiculous at this point. They really need to upgrade that bike.
You should mention the price.
Review the H2 SX SE+ please
Any news on S1000 getting an update?
This will make my former open class Yamaha seem tame by comparison.
As an s1000rr and s1000r owner I rode one of these and found : Engine not as punchy as last one. Seat uncomfortable and doesn’t allow movement . Not pleasant sounding . It Handles ok for what It is . Fuel economy is good
claimed 498 pounds wet is still way up there, was really hoping they'd shed it down closer to 460 or 470 by now.
Get rid of the armored vehicle hanging underneath (aka EU5 exhaust steel brick). I just put an Akra full exhaust on mine and it probably lost 25 lbs.
I'm happy with 500 but then I do a lot of highway miles where I appreciate the weighted stability. It's almost 300 lbs lighter than my K1600.
For sure wouldn't be hard to drop a ton of weight off this, but it will be expensive......
Exhaust
Extra pegs/reflectors
Wheels
Carbon body parts...
Battery etc
Could probably get 50lbs
It´s that oil leaking the front fork? not 600 miles even? damm!! Love that bike ...
Just looks like grease, still new so grease coming off the dust seals.
Where’s that bridge at?
Driving lights? Bmw?
🙏😊❤️
The « twanny-twanny » ;-) is better yes ✌️😎
for the $$$, i'd be more tempted by the 2020 ninja 1000sx. Just my opinion.
The Ninja is massively under equipped compared to the BMW, the BMW has so much more features and is much much faster and sportier whilst also very very comfortable. Definitely Skip on the 2020 S1000XR though the older models are much cheaper and better.
@@AntaresSQ01 for a 25% premium of initial cost (over $5,000 where i am), no thanks. And i've ridden enough to know that the difference in "speed" between these 2 bikes if there is one, would only be truly realized by professionals on a race track.
@@myz06rocks I think 5 grand is well worth it for the extra features you get from an XR, especially as I said from t he older models, it's even less, you can get leftover 2019 stock with 0 miles for under 14 grand and when you say you can't tell the difference unless on track I'm not talking about the difference between 142 bhp vs 165. I'm talking about the BMWs far superior suspension and Brakes. stuff you can definitely feel in the real world if you ride even a little sporty. The BMWs suspension is infinitely better than the 1000SX The BMW is 20lbs lighter anyway to begin with but the weight is so much better distributed aswell that the S1000XR feels lighter than my old Ninja 650 in corners. Not the mention the XR is also much more versatile, higher ground clearance and easier slow speed handling. As I said ignore the 2020 model for a second because they changed nothing except the dash for 2020 and most of the other things they've done didn't actually improve the bike. The gearing being short is solved by going up a teeth on the front or down 2 on the back and you get a much more balanced package anyway.
Antares to each their own. Enjoy your BMW ❤️
Ninja 1000, maybe the ZH2 also, but that's getting into the money again. Love Kawi but I love BMW a bit more.
Think I would rather have a KTM Superduke R kitted out for touring or just get a Superduke GT. More character and sounds so much meaner / cooler to me.
The KTM brand is not a reliable (yet) as BMW.... Go for it though.
Yeah that may be true and they are still pretty solid. Every manufacturer will have some issues but the way it comes together and is built just speaks to me. The BMW looks cobbled together but the KTM was built around that big Vtwin powerplant and damn it looks good.... Not to say the XR is A bad bike by any means, For me I would go KTM if I had the money!
Performance and reliability are better than Cool.
Darrell's Moto Diary the KTM has the performance and the reliability is pretty solid. The warranty issues with KTM’s are my main gripe.
Vince Tucker there are warranty issues with KTM? I’m interested in a super duke gt
S1000Xr or Multistrada V4s ?🤔
Waheed is the best moto reviewer out right now imo.
How does it compare to ninja z1000?
Please render in 4k
Great bike, but for a MSRP of 23k USD for this particular model it better be good.....
he talks so much about the sound as if is different. It sounds to me just like any other in line 4 cylinder japanese bike. Is not bad, is just the same.
Consider getting your hearing checked.
Old Bondsal Bridge
TWO THUMBS UP. Grow that hair like you don't give a shit. DIG IT. Ride that bike like you don't give a shit. DIG IT SQUARED.
BMW or Mutistrada?
@4:20 ,fork looks like leaking.
Miss the asymmetric headlights and the red colour though
It was O.K.
Holy crap man. Look at the frown on your face in avatar. Not sure if anything could make you happy.
Why is that front wheel so comically small compared to the massive front
Done for handling. It looks right to me.
you need a brush mate
190 RWHP?! I don't think so
Had a2016 X-r loved the engine handling but vibrations gave me numb fingers tried bar ends etc nothing worked Bmw ignored said normal for bike buy a 2020 one tried that still vibrates 65-75 told by salesman it’s new will get better bullshit seat uncomfortable if it wasn’t for vibes would have kept it for a long time now have a Ducati multistrada
overkill for a commuter? 70 minutes each way
Cost the same as two brand new Tracer 900 where I live. TWO. BRAND. NEW.
Looks and sounds good but no thanks.
Then don't get it duh, there's a bike for everyone
Dear Adam I have 5.6 height so can i ride this bike
With enough skill the bike is irrelevant
I would suggest no. I am your height and I fitted soupys adjustable rear links and dropped the front down through the triple clamps. Perfect now. Oh and also get a BMW dealer to reset the electronic suspension if fitted , so it still operates within the design range.
@@dianahardy7916 OK dear Diana
You can`t spell wAhmerican Dreeam without Adam Waheed.
"BMW really shed weight off this (new) chassis..." yeah? Then how come it still weighs the same as last generation?? lol
Isn't it little lighter than the last gen? Thank you
C'mon BMW, where is the hydraulic clutch?
Why do you need that? I’ve got an S1000r and the clutch is light anyway.. also you hardly ever use it as the quick shift/blipper is so smooth you can use it from 1st to 2nd without any lumpyness
@@OSR_1is it safe to use?
@@gianni3774 yes

Resident evil final chapter
Oh no, chain drive. No shaft
BMW claims to have created a lifetime maintenance free chain..diamond coated bushings... no oiling or adjustment. Ever!
Front wheel looks so small
If you had a giant snout people might think you have a small mouth...weird proportions!
Yeah needs a 19in
@@thevtadventure1062 19 in and handling goes to shit. This is a road bike.
G Handling would not “go to shit” it would make it more stable on tougher roads. Yeah you might not be dragging knee on it. But it’s a “Sports Touring Adventure “ it’s a weird niche. Similar to the DUC Multistrada. And they also make a enduro version with the 19 up front just looks better. I think a 18 or 19 would make the front end on the XR look a little more adventurous imo
"The XR inherits all of the mechanical and electronic upgrades that the 2020 RR was endowed with". Bollocks. It doesn't have shiftcam which was by far and away the main upgrade of the new RR.
