2020 BMW S 1000 XR Review | MC Commute

- BMW Motorrad expanded into the adventure-sport motorcycle category with its original S 1000 XR. Based off the German brand’s ultra-high-performance S 1000 RR superbike, the redesigned 2020 XR borrows a tweaked version of the S 1000’s recently overhauled liquid-cooled 999cc inline-four (read the 2019 BMW S 1000 RR First Look) with a lighter and more sharp-handling chassis designed for added agility as outlined in the 2020 BMW S 1000 XR First Look Preview. In typical Motorrad fashion, electronic improvements and a plethora of options came on our testbike raising MSRP to $22,640 as tested. Watch this video and see what the Bavarian brand’s top-of-the-line adventure-sport bike is like to ride on the road.

Great review, love the format. Respect for being able to talk during a wheelie gone bad, usually I swallow my heart blocking my windpipe thus muting my voice. Cheers Adam.
These MC Commutes are some of my favorite motorcycle videos. Adam is entertaining to listen to and watch. He obviously does his research on each bike and delivers interesting narrative during the ride. I don't have the skill or guts to ride as aggressively as he does, so it's fun to watch Adam split lanes and "give it the beans".
An honest and highly professional review of this amazing bike. Thanks Adam, well done.
RIP Adam's hair you will be missed
Such is life
He looks 20 years older 😱
I can relate. I think I'm about the same age
Best in the game Adam! You are very knowledgeable. Thanks for another great video.
Dude! Nice do! Great video as usual, of a great bike. The new do looks great.
8:06 Demonstrates rev limiter at stop light for almost 5 seconds. Hilarious.
Hahaha I was like damn I would be way too self conscious to do that lol 😂
A brand new bike thats not his.Bimbo.
Painful to watch.
SeminoleJoe why? It’s an ECU locked out rev limiter that’s well below the true fuel cut off rev limiter of the engine.
Great reviews, huge help in determining what motorcycle that will be best for me. I'm a Harley guy, but I want something lighter and more nimble. I will be getting a naked bike. Thank you from Hawaii. Aloha and God Bless !!!
Love your videos. Keep it up great job.🤠
You put the key in there, you forget the key in there, the bike gets stolen with the key in there :)
I had a Multistrada and came to love the keyless; just keep it in my jacket pocket. But then, I'd forget to give the shop the key! Like all Ducati's, the bike looked really sexy on the shop stand, where it spent most of its time ;)
My dream bike. Thank you for the review. Great vid。
Adam keep up the great work with these videos thank you for taking the time to bring us this content.
You do a lot of reviews and I pretty much watch them whether I’m interested in the motorcycle or not but is there any reason you haven’t rode the 2019/2020 KTM SDGT yet?
Great review. Is there vibrations in the foot pegs?
Gorgeous bike.
That color looks amazing
I like how Adam isn't getting carried away like other reviewers and just calls it a 7/10 of a sportbike
Great ride to work review 👍🏿
Cool review ☝️👍😎
Hey, I am planning to get one this week… 2016 are selling for $11k and 2020 is for $15k…. I had s1kRR for last 4 years… is it worth paying extra 4 grand for newer model ?
NO HE FIXED HIS HAIR NOOOOO
Must be meeting the new boss today
@@yamkaw346 Waheed is the boss.
I think he just tied it back.
@@rzu7120 Still fixed it...

Not sure what it is, but you look more civilized for some reason 😁 Thanks for another great review Adam 👍
Love the hair. Love the bike. Love these commutes!
Hate the driving!
Someone can tell me about the vibrations on the bars on this model? Did the finally fix? Thank you
The best bike reviewer in the industry. Well done.
Great review, Adam! Keep it up!
I like your new look.
100% on point review. A great bike that looks and sounds amazing. Demo one and you’ll be a believe. Peace.
I demo one and man the sheer performance blew me away. Such responsive handling and insanely stromg brakes woh little effort
I loved the first gen of this bike except for the vibration in the bars man only a 30min ride and my hands were numb . Other than that loved it
A very genuine review compared to others
Adam was crazy fast before, now he has a turbo with a new haircut.. better aerodynamics. :)
Great review, keep going Adam.
Legend man
"it's keyless" - takes key out of pocket to put in a compartment right near where the key barrell would be. Absolutely pointless then
Another point of failure. Ask any GS rider..
Leave it in pocket, problem solved. Next.
@@user-cx2bk6pm2f coming off a bike with stuff in your pockets? Bad news
@@georgel3657 Oh give it a rest, Mr Safety. It's a frickin key fob not a hunting knife.
Resoect to your riding i donrt do that kind of filtering. Also my 22 reg s1000xr never drops below 47mpg. And can achieve 53mog. Abd it revs to 12000 rom once run in also my bike has the sis telematics
There is a HUGE difference between Rain and Road. You will notice it after the revlimiter has been removed.
Dynamic allows for power wheelies which are prevented in Road mode and later ABS intervention.
Dynamic Pro allows for stunts if you're into that (stoppies, ...) and disables almost all assistance.
Is it just me or did you really seem happier on the F 900 XR? Judging by your reviews, that's the one I'd have between the two. Seems better value for money. Thanks for another excellent video, Adam!
Regarding TFT... BMW is at a weird spot in time where only the very high end and very low end do not have it. The G310 as Adam mentioned but the K1600 doesn't have TFT either.
Damn, he cut his hair.
He is no longer wowhead, Just Waheed now.
I think it’s just tied back
Finally poor guy it's starting to go up top no Rogan in the program it ain't coming back .
It’s keyless so you can keep it in your pocket? Leaving in that box I just see myself forgetting it and inviting thieves it take it
Yes... keep mine in my pocket, works great. Walk up to bike. Get on it and go, no key faffing.
"I like that all the medium and top line BMW's have this [TFT screen]" - cries in S1000R 😥
Won't be long until the S1000R gets an update.
The hypernaked category is seeing a lot of action lately... I'm sure the next S1000R will be a fully up to date beast.
no shift cam, also the engine is de-tuned as well as the gearbox being different gear ratios :) so the same but different
Lane splitting is legal between moving vehicles? That just seems stupid.
Is old S1000XR more economical around town? I get 37mpg. (UK)
less
What is that black square above the speedometer?
the mount for the GPS?
regarding the touchscreen... IMO touchscreens are a bit of a fad wrt bikes, good handlebar controls are FAR more important so you don't have to take your hands off the bars. Touch could be handy when stopped but with good bar controls even that is kindof pointless.
I've always like the S1000XR performance but found it less capable for touring compared to the Ducati Multi and KTM SA. Strikes me more as a "tall guy's hypernaked". One big improvement is getting rid of the pannier scaffolding and going with a better integrated mounting solution... makes the bike look MUCH better without bags.
Pilots HATE touch screens in planes, used to feel buttons n levers, now you have to focus on where things are on a screen n try to tap it while bumping in turbulence, it’s horrible and shouldn’t be on any vehicle either
1:52 "L.E.D. headlights are bold and bright; we rode at night;" *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* Deep in the heart of SoCal.
I understood that reference ^
The curvature of the seat looks like it locks you into one position, like the Multistrada.
It does. Sat on one didn't like the locked in feeling and have ridden the Multistrada. You can't stretch out.
Incredible lane splitting!
Specs?
Holy cow do you get high in the gears when in the ‘burbs! Was that 6th, at 50mph? Maybe I’m off due to riding in Canada and KpH or you’re in break in mode.
I rode this very model today, very impressed but noticed a buzz through the grips, pegs & seat between 4K-5K.
Yeah I feel like that is a signature bmw parallel. I test drove an xr, f800gs and a r1200gs. Although the r1200gs has also a buzz at 5k but it feels much more natural because of the clacky boxer. That why I ended up with 1200gs
@@modernlooks7041 This is an inline-four, though.
Powersports 4Life guess he meant parallel 4 lol
Why anyone would want a sport bike on the road when these things are available. The hair is a huge improvement
I have a 1200RS and the 1000XR and the XR is a really different bike. I've been told I look like I'm on a massive dirt bike when I ride the XR. Nobody will say that about the RS. Even though it's very quick and sporty you definitely won't mistake it for a sport bike in any way other than straight line performance.
These are tall and heavier. Will not compete with a Supersport in the handling department.
Not everyone wants an adventure bike.
@@10njbytes40 Im talking about road riding, not willy waving in the canyons
@@pauly1k It's not an adventure bike per say
beautiful.
Seems like barbers have been reopened in Southern California:) Cheers from Ireland
In CA we go to Salons. . . not "Barbers".
I need a glass of champagne and scalp massage before my haircut. . .
Nice bike. I just bought an older K1200GT which I have really enjoyed. Not sure I would like that bike so much but I’ll take a new K1600GT!
The K1600 doesn't disappoint. Great commuter. An even greater tourer. If light on the throttle I can get 350 miles on a tank. Smooth as butter.
Not having the shift cam is a good thing in my opinion. Power delivery is not as linear with it :/
Agree it's good NOT having it... but it's a reliability thing for me. The electronic controller is buried in the head, subject to extreme heat cycles, and will eventually fail. What then, will the bike even start?
put my deposit down 2 weeks ago, 2 more weeks to go till delivery! :D
Hope it lived up to your expectations. Picking up mine on Monday, the red white and blue version.
@@peterrooney8236 oh yeah, she's fantastic!
Rides a fancy ass bike and 75% of the comments are about his hair 😂
You should think of getting a decent sound system on your helmet
How would you compare this bike to a tracer 900 gt?
X_Apollyon different level. BMW is twice the price and about 60 more horsepower. Tracer compares with the smaller f900xr
Which f900xr is garbage vs the tracer GT basically
Easy, you can buy two Tracers or one XR1000..
Would you choose BMW S1000xr, BMW s1000rr, Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx or Kawasaki z900 for 25 min (one way) commute and fun carving corners?
Kawasaki versys
For that commute and if your trying to save money go with the Z900. If you think you’re going to do longer commutes sometime go with the XR or Ninja 1000SX.
@ YWT Stewart : depends on you but here some ideas :
Kawasaki Z900, KTM 790 Duke, CB650R Neo Sports Café to save money.
NC750X or NC750S in DCT to save fuel and easy handle in traffic jams.
KTM Super Duke R, BMW S1000R, Kawasaki Z1000 for the fun.
Ducati Diavel S or XDiavel S for cruising and accelerations.
Kawasaki Ninja H2 and Z H2, Yamaha VMAX, if you want to die on the road (joking)
Or for allrounders : BMW S1000XR, KTM Super Duke GT, Ducati Multistrada Grand Tour, Honda Africa Twin Sports Adventure ES DCT (electronic suspension). But these allrounders cost more money.
Good luck finding the ride you like.
@@THEREALZENFORCE mt09 over z900, but one of those.
@@christophertrueman6701 ok
Visually they went backwards, that asymmetric lights made it look so unique and amazing!
Nice... 😎😷
Actually Suzuki Vstrom DL1000 came before (2002) the Multistrada (2003).
I can't believe he pinned the throttle and held it at 9,000 RPM with no load on the engine.
George Wallace that was painful.
@@davidmechem9502 Yeah what a douche. I guess he figures not his bike. But one day it will be somebody's bike. And you just don't do that if you have the brains that God gave common gravel.
Is in the US legal to split the lanes?
Yes but only on the highway.
Not legal everywhere in the US, only in California, but I believe several other states are in the process of legalizing lane sharing...or perhaps have already.
Adam is the best motorvlogger on UA-cam Fact!!!
Just wish he would shave his head no.1 as it would suit him better. 🙏
RS vs XR
this or a GSXS1000GT?
I wonder when I can expect to find aftermarket mandibles for my FJ-09, rather than those silly beaks.😜
Who’s that clean cut guy?
And that's why I'm waiting for the 2022 BMW S1000XR, So that it comes with the ShiftCam tech.
for the fuel efficiency? meh.
I saw an article that said they won’t use it. The bike makes power where it’s suppose to so it’s not needed. 🤷🏼♂️. It needs the s1000rr engine. I want a supersport XR. Lol.
I think TDM did all this "adventure sport" thing a decade earlier than a Multistrada.
And how the guys that did the face decided "Hey, lets make sure it looks like it was designed or made by Yamaha"
@@82phalanX dont forget ktm 990 smt
@@lukaszg74 true, that bike is an absolute racket..
I have the RS but as you said worth a shot for XR..
RS.. great bike; doesn't get the credit and recognition it deserves.
Hi, could you do a video about the best performance on specific mileage of engine oil?
This question has confused me for many years, I feel like the engine would always perform better after few hundreds of mileage than just changing new motor oil.
Some of our local racers also agree with the opinion, they sometimes run the motor oil to specific mileage and breed it out for stocking, keep it till the track day and reuse the oil again for best engine performance.
My question is "why the engine won't perform best when the oil is new? what makes it performed better after a few hundreds of mileage of engine running?".
Thank you very much for reading my question.
You're seriously overthinking this.
@@user-cx2bk6pm2f okay...
I get about 38-40 MPG with hard riding on mine.
So then the color display boots up a bit quicker than the Africa Twin lol 😃
The XR does in fact have adaptive headlights. It’s an option and they work very well.
all he said was it wans't equipped. it's a stand a lone option (here in Canada at least)
Hypamotoard 950 sp commute
Dude....just embrace life and go with a number 2 on a Wahl trimmer. 👌🏽🏍
Just wish it had a fuel gauge
i still cant get over the fucking headlight change....without the asymmetric it does not feel the same
Pass. I'll take a 2021 Verysys 1000. Won't beat the S 1000 in a race but will get you were you going with more comfort and has extra tech and it's still rips when you wanna.
I really love proper sport touring bike like this and the RT. I love the look of the Beemers and on paper they are amazing, but they really lack Soul to me. They feel like SUV's. My 2 cents...
Hmm. Try the K1600 or R1250RS. If you still can't find the soul, BMW may not be for you. Would be a shame though, these are the finest bikes on the planet.
The S1000XR is the exception
2:10 I would simply put the key in my jacket...
Where's that old guy ?
Wasn't the Hayabusa and Zx-14r the first ones to introduce sport touring?
Sport touring =/= Sport adventure BMW's Sport tourer is the R1250RS and the K1600 at the heavier end
@@AntaresSQ01 Okay got it
Honda Vfr
Nice lane splitting; legal in CA... 😎
I would never put a key of a keyless system together with the bike. Its an invitation for u to forget it there and to get the bike stolen
Ya I agree. We do need to remember it's not his bike.
Adam would look pretty good with a shaved head.
This sounded like a brochure
Pure ad copy.
Ya can't wait this anymore... Too many going in between cars... It's like bikes rule the road in California...
The last s1000xr was 9/10 of a sportbike.
And this one?
The screen is not touch screen. Wow how dare they
Wow almost 5 minutes to arrive to operational temperature.
Amazing 🙄
Like the new hairline 😂
The Multistrada then the Buell Ulysses, my favourite.
You might not lose the keyless fob, but leave it in the compartment and you may get the bike stolen. We want keys!
BMW four-cylinder engines have come a long way since the Bricks.
How is a fob a problem? Leave it in your pocket
@@ALEXdaG Fair point. Do they go wrong, though?
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o not sure. If anything like a car they should have a key inside as a backup but idk
