Some facts for you about that bike: it accelerates quicker to 120 mph compared to the RR (then the RR catches up flies ahead). The handlebar is heavy to turn because there's some weight at the front for better corner entry and you can put some sticky rubber on and do track days with it easily and upset some supersport riders :D

As an S1000XR rider, this bike is designed for the older guy (avg. age of owner of this bike is mid-50s) who wants the comfortable upright position, but loves the super bike power from the days before back problems and peeing five time a night. Does well on long distance trips and is an absolute thrill in the twisties.

Coming from Triumphs (Sp3) and getting older, I wanted fast-but-comfortable plus the ability to have hard bags. Stumbled across the XR at the local Triumph-BMW combo dealer -- haven't looked back. The build quality and sound aren't as awesome as the Triumphs, but the performance is amazing. Fun to surprise the supersport riders, too, when you can easily keep up with and even pass them.

The wheel on the left handle is for the nav system, it does have the mount for it. It looks like you are on a factory lowered bike (i have one), it does take away some suspension travel. As you i prefer the road mode for the suspension. And please, find som twisties and really have some fun on it :)

I started this video, about 30 secs in: If ma boi disses this bike in any way other than maybe the handlebar vibrations (ez fix btw) I'm gonna lose it. This bike is literally best in class and an all around PERFECT motorbike. I mean just as a first example listen to that STOCK exhaust sound. Literally don't need an exhaust on that thing. Also you should've tried Dynamic Pro, its another step up from Dynamic that opens up the exhaust valve completely.
11:07, careful, this bike has lowered versions from factory, you may have been on one. Cos normal seat, normal suspension this bike is very tall. I'm just under 6ft and when I tested them I'm ball of my feet both sides or flat one tip toe other
14:17 Road is the softer cushy setting, dynamic is by all means "Sport" suspension
17:11 That's where you're wrong. IF people want a supersport but aren't riding on the track 24/7 they should get this. This bike is within 1-1.5 sec around most tracks vs the RR model. If people want a slow tourer, they get the GS, There is a reason this is one of the most sold models in BMW's lineup.
OC: This is a bike for people who are 25 but their mental age is 45

I was lucky enough to ride a 2019 version of them, I agree, it definitely make you too comfortable and push on a bit. They're an incredible bike - but I agree, as a touring bike I still think the likes of the 1290 super adventure is a much more attractive option.
THAT SAID!! For a giant human like myself the S1000rr isn't an option as I'm too large, so I'd 100% go for the S100XR if I wanted it.

  • @cramalnig
    @cramalnig Рік тому

Good lengthy review.. I'm after one of these to replace my Honda VFR800X, which I use as a commuter mile-muncher. I think it's epic that they've used the same engine as the S1000RR, just tuned the mid range for more grunt, suited for roads / country roads. Overtaking would be a breeze! As for the screen, I'd add the short addition fly screen on top of it (I'm 6'5") to gain some more protection, it's what I added to the Honda and it works perfectly. I often ride a BMW R1250RT for Bloodbikes here in the UK, and I've found the Dynamic suspension setting much more rewarding than the Road mode, it tends to wallow somewhat in Road mode (all controlled from that scroll on the left which you've no doubt learnt about already). It's definitely a sports touring machine (as the Honda above is), but at the upper end with its performance. I like the option is has, the tame Road mode, or switch up to Dynamic for a more spirited ride...

The weird spinny thing on the left is the control for the GPS system you can buy for the bike, which legit is worth it's weight on gold (which I think is an accurate portrayal of its cost). It's a brilliant GPS on its own, but it also shows a bunch of bike specific information, e.g. service intervals, fuel range, outside temp, bike temp, battery life, GPS destination in KM/Miles, Time to destination, etc.
Really wicked unit, great for plotting long rides and if you want you can tell the gps to take you the route with the most curves, which is really great for plotting group rides. Just type your destination, select in options "preffer curves" and it will take you on the best bike routes to your desti.

Chase, I would characterize the S1000XR and the Multistrada as sport-tourers. While you could take them on some gravel roads, they really aren’t designed to go offroad, unlike a BMW GS. 2016 BMW R 1200 RS owner here. Going back to the old flying brick/transverse I-4 K100 RS (Reise Sport - literally sport touring in English) there’s a tradition of I-4 power plants in sporting bikes with a touring function. BMW created the first sport touring motorcycle with the R 100 RS (boxer powered, like my bike). This blend of sport with function is just something that BMW does. For us, “It is the way.”
The S 1000 XR, is a cross (X) of sporting performance (S 1000) with touring, or Reisen. Thus, XR. If it seems like an odd pairing, consider that Germans like to take their R 1200 GS bikes to the track, lol. They demand a lot of their machines. It was only a matter of time before BMW tried this with their S 1000 motor. That, and the Multistrada had the sports adventure touring market all to itself for a while. The result is this long-legged touring bike on meth.

  • @graylunsford
    @graylunsford 3 роки тому

OC - I’ve got to ride an XR. To me the appeal would be going cross country to find the great roads and when you get to them, being able to enjoy them fully. You can enjoy roads without being on a race bike of course but anyway, i think that’s the idea behind it. Chase you rode a Multistrada Pikes Peak version a while ago. That’s the XR competitor along with... I really want to try a 2020 KTM Super Duke 1290 GT.

I like to do long trips and like a sport-tourer or tourer for that purpose. I also like something lighter and more nimble for rides closer to home. I have a Kawasaki Concours as my sport-tourer and a BMW S1000R as my around town bike. I really dislike not having any wind protection or luggage on the S1kR and have considered selling both bikes and buying S1kXR to use for everything. I test rode it at a recent BMW demo day, however, and it's not the best bike for long rides. It's windy and noisy for me at highway speeds with the stock windscreen (I'm 6'3") and the bike is high strung (i.e., not relaxing). Also, it has a chain drive which is not as good as a shaft drive when you cover a bunch of miles on a trip. I rode the K1600GTL which is amazing but it's very big and heavy. I concluded there is no one motorcycle that does everything well. PS - the current S1kXR gets pricy if you buy it with panniers and there are many great bikes at that price point and below.

  • @cliff8675

OC: Welcome to the BMW "dark side" (we'll get more cookies). The S1000XR lures the older youth off the sport bikes and shows them where touring is. I haven't ridden an S1000 anything, but for a daily driver/occasional track day the XR looks to be a nice fit. For reference, my daily driver is a R1200RT. In my younger days I would have gone S1000XR over the RT, but I could still see myself getting into some hooligan mischief every now and then on the XR even today.

This is an upright super sport bike. No idea why it is being driven in an urban setting, let alone test driven.
Take this thing out to the tight twisted hill back country with a set of super sticky track tires, put it in Dynamic Pro mode, road setting on the suspension, let the clutch out & never touch it again.
Twist the throttle with purpose & be ready to have the best ride you ever had ever. This bike can go, stop, & turn better than most super sports under 150 MPH. It redlines about 80 in 1st. The RR redlines at 108.
The tight gear package make the power delivery almost violent above 5k which it has no business ever dropping below. I had to get mine dyno tuned ECU Flaahed, to smooth out the power delivery & unredtricted, but it's by far the most fun & capable bike I have ever ridden off track.
They screwed the bike up in 2020 by stretching 4-6 gears out for the fools who want to tour on this thing.
It becomes 50% less bike on touring tires.
If you want to ride on touring tires, this is way too much bike for you.
This is 100% a super sport upright. She rips better than just about anything out there off track. If you know how to ride, you will pick off crotch rockets all day long on the tracks too.

I own this bike and I have nothing but nice words for it, however, low seating is not one of em, I think the bike you tested probably had the manufacturer option low sit or even lowered suspesion, cause I got the standard one (Europe) and I was tippy toeing all day, and I'm 5 ft 8". Also, Dynamic suspension is not automatically adjusted (the new one 2020 does it). Tt's just the hard setting, and you should use road for highway, and then dynamic for twisties.

More of a sport tourer and not an adventure bike. It's in the vane of a Tracer 900, which, since you got a hookup there with Yamaha, that would be a great bike to compare to this.
Some notes with the BMW way of naming their suspension settings; "Dynamic" doesn't change to adjust to the road, like you'd think or hope. They changed the way they name it, but it used to just be 'Sport', 'Normal' or 'Comfort'. Dynamic is the equivalent of the old "sport".
The circle boy is the BMW "wonder wheel". On that bike, it's more used to cycle through the option on the BMW nav, which is a rebranded Garmin unit. On other bikes like the K1600 (which I have) or something else with a TFT dash, it cycles through all the menus. Also let's you change radio stations, raise volume, etc.
Like many design features on any BMW car or motorcycle I've owned, it leaves you scratching your head, wondering if there was a better way to design it, but then at some point, the reason it works the way it does becomes evident and you realize that those Germans may be onto something lol

Yeah way to sell a bike to someone, "this bike really shines when you take it on a highway, that is where it likes to be the best" Like anyone buying a motorcycle is mainly wanting to ride on the highway , the most boring bit of any motorcycle ride. I only ride highway to get to the better roads. Town and highways is the most boring roads so I try to ride them as little as possible.
I miss the clips where Chase take his bikes to the montain. Like the old Speed triple R video Chase did in the mountain when Smo was visiting from the UK. That is one of Chases better first rides of all time when we got to se the motorcycle on motorcycle roads and not just boring straight urban concrete.
That video and Smo's review of that bike actually made me go buy the 2018 Speed triple RS 1050, really good first ride video. These in town and highway videos that 99% of the first rides are, tells very little how the bike feels to ride on roads that you want to ride your bike. I hope Chase will start with quality videos over quantity again. More bikes on fun roads like up in the mountains. Those roads are where I want to ride my new bike.

OC: The S1000 XR is probably more comparable to another high end sport touring bike like a Ninja H2 SX than the Multistrada. BMW's marketing is somewhat confusing as they will refer to the S1000 XR as a "Sport Adventure". It lacks the protection (skid plate, etc) and performance/power delivery dynamics of an ADV, which is why they have the GS line. If someone handed me the keys to one I'm pretty sure I wouldn't turn it down. The price puts it way outside of anything I would consider unless I was going to ride over 200 days out of the year and had luggage for going on multi-day trips.
@chaseontwowheels - How do you think it compares to your MT-10 set up as a touring bike? That is actually a pretty good side by side, and I think the MT with all the additions still comes in way under the cost of a new BMW.

I just rolled 6000 miles on my 2016 S1000XR last weekend. I bought it two years ago with 1200 miles on it. I came from a 2009 Monster 696.
I wanted something sporty that would eat up miles..and this sure does it (not much adventure with this bike..I have taken it down some gravel roads..not a good idea). All day comfort but this bike is known to have a vibration around the 5-6K rev range (lots of youtube vids on it).
Some days it bothers me, most days it doesn't.
I'm 5'8 with a 32 inch inseam and find this bike pretty tall for me. Maybe that bike had the lower seat? I tried the lower Sargent seat but found it had pressure points that I could not deal with. So I'm back to the stock seat.
Lower speed manuvering, when stopped, I feel the bike is front/top heavy. But I've def gotten used to it for the most part.
I love the quick shifter and the sound this engine makes at higher revs. Love the heated grips, living near Albany NY I use them all the time.
I somewhat agree with your comment on the mode button placement, I however wish the heated grip button was easier to reach. Road mode seems bouncing to me, mostly use Dynamic for the "spirited ride experience"
If you aren't familiar with Cuban Rider check out his S1000XR vids on UA-cam. Great content!
