In this video I discuss a question I am asked almost every time I post a video or picture of the studio. Where do you get the blacking plates you use to separate your equipment and why do you use them instead of a standard 1u blanking plate. There are a number of reasons why I use 1/3u blacking plates instead of 1u blanking plates.
Saves Space - Using 1/3u instead of 1u saves 2u across an entire rack. 1/3u is plenty of space to leave for a unit to vent and provide adequate airflow.
The Look - 1/3u looks a lot smarter and cleaner when compared to have 1u space between each unit.
Cost Effective - 1/3u are slightly cheaper than 1u due to not using as much material.

I can not find any seller outside of UK in EU. It’s a very uncommon product.
Thank you for the video showing this unknown product for me.
I really didn’t know those existed, those will give me more space. Thank you for sharing.
Frees up 2u of valuable space in each rack.
Thank you!!!
Thank you
Just purchased 3 my friend 👌🏾
Good to see you Paul!!
The All Metal Parts service was super fast...had them a week after I placed the order....Thanks

Thanks for sharing 😊
Yeah you need some space for a Terry EQ, no? :-D My dream hardware right now.
I just wish it didn't look like my 2 year old designed it.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio no the design is awesome!! :-D but sure first time I saw it I thought the same
@ast4127 every time I've used one it's annoyed me looking at it. I was told you can request a different faceplate for it.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio How do you think it sounds then? I was sincerely blown away by the demos Ive heard. But, you do have about 10 times the gear I have :-D thanks for responding BTW
@ast4127 sounded great. As you would expect from a high-end EQ. There is no doubt about it sounding good. I know looks shouldn't matter it's all about its sound.
Are you still able to screw all 4 corners of your gear in with these? When I tried offsetting my gear by only 1u I found I couldn’t screw the gear in fully. Do you just screw your gear in with two screws?
It depends on the rack rails you are using. If you are using rack rails with 3 holes per u, you won't have any issues. If you are using rack rails with 2 holes per u, you will have issues. Using the right rack rails you can screw your gear in every corner.
I really doubt the effect of blanking plates at all..... I think heat should not be a problem if hardware is designed properly, of course tube based hardware could pose problems to adjacent hardware but if it is solid state the wide range of temperature around the globe should account for the temperature in the rack. Just my thoughts.....
Feel free to do as you think
If a unit has a vent, it has been put there for a reason. Don't block it. Please don't learn this the hard way. You'll notice I have what I call cold racks are hot racks. Certain gear doesn't generate heat. These racks can have one unit on top of the other. Hot racks, you should really allow some airflow.
12 QUID A POP?
£6.70 each if you shop direct.
The question is why 1/3u blanking plate is 4x expensive than 1u 🤷🏾♂️
You'd think they would be 1/3rd the price wouldn't you. But I would imagine the same amount of work goes into both. Less material though. Also a factor would be less demand for 1/3u and very few companies making them, so if you monopolise the market and own all the supply you can charge what you want. I think £6.60 is quite reasonable though.
