IM BACK! Stoked to be posting again. Loads of renewed energy!
If you like this video, there is a new way to show your support by clicking on the Super Thanks button! This revenue goes straight back into the videos I make on UA-cam!
As a new sound mixer and audio person, it means a lot to have videos like this for support!
One of my favorite, saddest quotes from Juno: "I just need to know that it's possible two people can stay happy together forever."
Glad this helped buddy! And nice quote indeed!
Sound is the most important, more people with cameras need to start understanding sound. Great stuff
Absolutely! Completely agree!
How good! Nothing worse than watching something with bad audio quality. Thank you for sharing this video and also for inviting Bente to show us all the behind the scenes and to showcase a professional at work.
Thanks a lot Jeff. Means a lot to hear this :-)
WHAT????? this video is AWESOME.. that's it. This is my reference video. My go to. My wallpaper if possible. Im going to watch this video over and over again and revolve my life and gear building plan around it until I reach my location dream kit. Thank you 1 million times guys
This comment made my day! Cheers Gus!
Thanks for the video, Sjoerd. That was the best video I have seen about audio recording. Have a nice day.
Thanks a lot! This is a great compliment!
Love that you were able to show so many examples.
Cheers dude! Glad you liked it so much
This deserves more views. Really helpful!
Thanks Ryan!
Also INSIDE: The shotgun mic will cancel out the voice a little, since the echos in the room hit the tube from the side. Most likely canceling high frequenzies, resulting in a weird strong low end sound. The smaler the room, the smaler the mic. Pencil condenser aKa SDC with a hypercardiot / supercardiot pattern are best for booming in a small space. Cardiot is good if you wanna get some sounds from the side too. Like 2 people talking in a small space. If it's 1 target -> hyper/super cardiot is better.
OUTSIDE: The bigger the space (no reflections) the longer the mic tube for best results.
Great video! Keep it up 🙂
Thanks for this extra tip! Always highly appreciated!
“If you can grow love, then you can never lose love.” - Over The Moon (2020) had my face drenched with tears
Definitely a nice one!
At some point in life, I feel like what I've done is often gets wrong. But one thing I enjoy is being part of little audio team in film production in my town. Watching video like yours is always entertaining in different way and make me dream to be a great sound recordist someday, and get opportunities to take part of big film production.
My favorite quote is from Intern, "You should feel nothing but great about what you've done, and I'd hate to see you let anyone take that away from you." (Ben Whittaker). It's not the saddest but it touched me a lot. The movie is really heartwarming and fill back my energy everytime I remember it. Thank you for sharing with us!🔥
Keep at it Yanita and im sure you will be doing bigger productions in no time!
Hey lets work together
My favorite quote is from Interstellar, "Love is the one thing that transcends time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we cannot understand it."
I was touched by the quote because it reminds me of my ex, a radio announcer that has left this world, she's the one that got me into this audio world and stuff and fall in love with it. By the way, this video is great and I hope I can try it someday.
Im so sorry to hear this! Thanks for sharing
I am starting off myself as a location sound recordist and it helps a lot to get exposed more to the industry within the Netherlands! Really usefull tips aswell!
Thanks man. Glad it was helpful!
“I see now that the circumstances of one's birth is irrelevent,it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.”
First time seeing your video. Very nice.
Thanks a lot man! Appreciate it!
One of the most well-rounded crash courses on film sound on UA-cam! Bente is amazing.
Quote: "Out here, everything hurts.” [Mad Max: Fury Road] - so much bitterness in such a small sentence.
Thanks so much Eva! Ill let Bente know!🙏🏼
I love that content. I used it for my university exam, amazing!
Haha amazing! Thanks!!
Awesome tips! Thank you so much for doing this ❤
Appreciate it mate!
Great video! Sound is always the forgotten weakest point. I've always described myself as a plumber in some ways. It's intricate work, often not thought about and expected to just work - and only noticed when it doesn't work and the water is overflowing. And just like a plumber, some work can be pieces of art too. I've used Ambient since 2000 with an ACL202T lockit box, and all the way up to now with an Ambient ACN-LS and older ACD301. I haven't gotten a chance to use the new tiny lockits yet, they're really cute.
Good example man. Can totally agree! Those lockits are absolutely wonderful!
Thank you for making this video. I appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
Great work guys. Love the set up too 👌👊
Glad you like it!
Audio is often a forgotten child.. I learned so much from this, a lof of things I haven't even thought about before! Getting a sneak peak into someone's accessories is always really nice as well. Everyone has different ones which are useful in their own ways and most of the time I end up buying new stuff myself hahaha. As for the quote, I'm a sucker for the "Such a beautiful place, to be with friends." Whilst Dobby was dying in Harry's arms in Deathly Hallow - Part 1
Glad you liked it! And that quote.. Love it.
Thanks for this Sjoerd! Especially the tips on properly hiding a lav were very useful (I find myself going the lazy route and pin it onto a shirt way too often).
And for the emotional film quote: "If you stay here and this becomes your present, then pretty soon you'll start imagining another time was really the golden time. That's, you know, what the presence is. It's a little unsatisfying because life's a little unsatisfying". From Midnight in Paris
I believe hiding it can make a difference. Though, the shirt pin will most likely sound better! :-)
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a video like this.
Glad it was helpful!
Sjoerd this was awesome, I learned a lot and it's something we as filmmakers need to be better about! Thank you!
Thanks a lot man. Amazing to hear this :-)
You dont need to understand what we do, you need to understand when we ask for the time we need when there's a problem. Directors are good at saying all the right things. "Yeah man....if theres a problem I got your back!"
All that goes out the window when you are 3 or 4 pages behind.
Wow!!! Qué tremenda explicación. Recién comienzo con el diseño de sonido, y éste video me ha ayudado bastante
If I was to pick one video to send to a completely beginner sound mixer it would be this!! So much info in a 20 minute vid. Subscribing!!
Means a lot mate! Glad it was helpful!
Welcome back man! Been a minuet. :)
It was man! Glad to be back
Great thumbnail maattjee 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thanks 😁
Another reason we don't like to use shotguns indoors is that the off-axis rejection colors the tone of the sound quite heavily--- so those nice reverbs you talked about don't sound very good at all even if they're quiet. But, the super cardioids don't color the sound so much and the wider pickup pattern means less queueing is needed between actors. Also those shorter mics are just easier to fit in cramped spaces indoors.
Thanks for the added info!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Absolutely true. I've experienced this. We did a long shot where we followed the actor from outside to inside. I begged the director for a break in filming so I could switch mics. Shitguns can sound good indoors but inly in really large spaces.
Love her! Bente is awesome.
She is!
Just found your channel, it's treasure!! Thank you for your sharing!
Thanks a lot man. Kind words are always welcome hehe
Gracias por la dedicación y el esfuerzo por nuestra labor !! 💪🤘🎬
De nada! Gracias for watching (thats as far as my Spanish goes lol)
One of the greatest audio tutorial ever got from youtube. and Here's the Quote "One thing I've learned in all my years is that nothing ever works out just the way you want it to be" by Oracle - Matrix
Thanks so much dude! Great feedback :-)
Sound Designer offered us great gems!
Absolutely!
Great tips, they were very useful.
Cheers!
"Dad...Dad come on. You gotta get up. Dad we gotta go home." lion King, gets me everytime!
A classic. Love that film!!
I love this video, greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome, this was interesting and helpful
Thanks dude
"She used to fart in her sleep. Just thought I'd share that with you. One night it was so loud, it woke the dog up. She woke up and gone, like, 'Was that you?' I said, 'Yeah.' I didn't have the heart to tell her. Oh, God."
Robin Williams (The Good Will Hunting 1997)
A lovely improvised line from a wonderful actor and person. :)
I couldn't agree more, Max!
The most emotional quote that I've ever heard would have to be from the recent film Everything Everywhere All at Once: "Of all the places I could be, I just want to be here with you."
I looked over at my wife with tears in my eyes...She gave me a very confused look because she wasn't a fan of the movie. It was a great time haha!
Also, audio has been my weakest skill that I am trying to strengthen. This video was very helpful, thank you!
Hahaha, this sounds so familiar. I tear up on the weirdest moments. 80% off the time while watching Dune, im teared up. No idea why lol.
Thanks a lot dude!
here for the thumbnail, stayed for the content
Thats a good compliment and feedback in one! Ha!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching
Those concealers are an absolute must. Sometimes called C mounts. They remove 95% of clothes rustle.
Absolutely!
Great informative video! nice one!
Thanks dude. Appreciate it!
cool information man, it looks like a podcast. you're good at that too. Well done.
Thanks papsie!❤️
Awesome video!
Thanks a lot Brett!
Welcome back, Sjoerd. Practical info for pros - viewers of different proficiency levels will likely take something away from this one. Attention-holding mix of guest, venues, perspectives, “my bag” segment, live and recorded demos. Boom segment tips easiest/clearest of all to grasp/apply, IMO. Smooth ad placement. Tempted to say “sound advice” but won’t 😀. Opening head-on segment w/bag on table had bag blocking your guest somewhat. Side shots did not have the issue. Hope tape used to affix mic to chest hair was not painful upon removal😀. Cheers!
Paul! Glad to see you back here! Thanks for the comment, always like to read your opinion on things. Chest hair is still making its way back though...
Good Video mate, actually great tip to always try out if booming from the top does actually sound better then from the bottom
Thanks a lot man! I actually was surprised when editing it, haha. Some very valuable tips!
Wow awesome
Thank you! Cheers!
I really missed your videos, buddy. Thanks so much! I always get a lot of knowledge from your content; truly inspirational.
Emotional quote "I'm Just Afraid That If I Died Today My Life Would Have Amounted To Nothing." - Soul. 😢
Means a lot to hear this mate. Thanks! Beautiful quote indeed!
Thanks, Sir great video
Thanks a lot
4:02 Yes! Ambient Master Mode is definitely super nice for documentary!!!
Absolutely!
"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain" - Blade Runner
Awesome video guys ✌
Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for this, it was a great video. There isnt a lot of videos or info about sound mixers
Glad it was helpful!
That's because we have enough competition.
LOL she needs a live LOL... I love her!!!
Well done
Cheers!
Toy Story "No Buzz... I'm your father..."
well said in title PROfessional sound mixer, all the gears she's using are top notch stuffs! ouch
11:11 lucky she didn't wax your hairs, some other pro tips to prevent rustle noise was waxing them off lol
Haha, well, yea, the gear is rather top-of-the-line. Anddd she did tho😂, after the day, taking that tape off was a nice reminder Im not becoming an actor
@@SjoerdWess 🤣
The most emotional quote I ever heard in film is “Ik heb Mufasa vermoord...“/“I killed Mufasa...“
Great vid guys
Thanks a lot!
"Don't regret. Remember" from protrait of a lady on fire
Really nice! Thanks for watching!
The loop!
Back from Norway are we? 🇳🇴 Hope you had a great time. Amazing video mate. This was really well done, and so many good examples that made the whole difference.
Movie quote.... when Forrest Gump sees his son for the first time... "Is he smart?"
Yes mate! Im back! Was an amazing time and what an amazing country. Wow.
Thanks for watching!
Ambient NanoLockits all the way. They’ve never failed me
Great devices!
Glad to see you back!! Loved your content since the day I found your channel!!
"What a beautiful place...to be with friends."
-Dobby
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
Don’t know if it’s the line, or just Dobby dying… just makes me sad man.. 😔
Thanks a lot dude! I actually shed a tear at that exact same moment. I just saw my childhood friend disappear haha. RIP DOBBY!
Note: at 3:22, he says clapping or 'slating' is not efficient. Maybe in documentary situations when you have to capture something quickly, or when the shoot isn't planned well and you are strapped for time. Timecode is convenient for the editor, but proper slating is almost 100% foolproof for syncing audio and has been since sound first came into film. Electronic equipment can fail, batteries, cables, incorrect setup, etc. Having a proper slate is a good backup in case.
Around 16:47, the reason for not using a shotgun inside is due to the nature of the interference tube (the long part with the holes). Sound bouncing off the walls hit the tube and combine with the direct sound and causes phasing artifacts, basically can make the sound a bit strange. Can also happen if the scene is outside next to a wall, so the inside/outside thing is not 100%.
At 20:00, yes. Your ears are most important!
Thanks for all the input! Much appreciated!
Interesting. You seem knowledgeable about this topic. I am in search of the best "boom" microphone for shooting indoors (small spaces) for my next independent feature film. Would love to get your recommendation(s).
@@SitinprettyProductions Many options depending on your budget, but basically something with a hyper-cardioid pattern is usually used. You can find videos on youTube with mic comparisons. Shotgun mics in an enclosed space with wall reflections can have weird sound artifacts from phasing caused by the long interference tube.
@@mokyoworks2696 thank you,!
Great insight for new sound mixers and their colleagues! This might be longer than a quote, but the whole thing (plus Howard Shore's score) gets me every time.....
Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
Pippin: What? Gandalf? See what?
Gandalf: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: No. No, it isn't.
Haha wouw dude! Thats some effort! Thanks a lot!
'Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up'
Sounds good! Dont know this one
Thanks for this! Very educating for everyone in the indusrty, plus we got to see some awesome pieces of gear!
Fave emotional quote “Just when I really needed a raincoat, he returned to my side. It would be so great if it could rain forever.” Fallen Angels (1995) dir. Wong Kar-wai.
Ahhh, nice one man! Thanks for watching
Super awesome video, my friend! Audio is crucial for our work so yeah!, viva audio🎤🎙🎤. Thanks for sharing this one! Something VERY weird happened. I couldn’t find the notification for this video. I went to check and I couldn’t find you in my subs list!!! When I find you I wasn’t subscribed to you! (But I know I was)-maybe a glitch on the matrix, or YT, lol! (Im now-again, lol) Great interview! And I loved the light for the angle shot!!!
Ahhhhh Ruben, you were done with me, weren't you!! Haha. Thanks for checking out the video buddy. Glad to see you here :-)
@@SjoerdWess of course buddy. Wouldn’t miss it 💪💪💪🔥💥🍺🎥🎥🎥
Thanks for this Sjoerd!
Just as a heads-up: there was one ungraded clip in there, in the indoor section looking at Bente, and then another time outside Bente mentioned a shotgun mic from Shure, I believe, but the title card you showed was of another mic.
Oh, and the inspirational movie quote for the contest:
"Don't ever let anyone ever say to you that you shouldn't regret anything... Don't do that. Don't! You regret what you fucking want! Use that. Use that. Use that regret for anything, any way you want. You can use it." - Earl Partridge, Magnolia (1999)
Haha good eye! Thanks for the quote mate, a good one!
Great tips on audio, too often neglected by many aspiring filmmakers!
As for an emotional quote: "No parent should have to bury their child" -Theoden King in Lord of the Rings
That just tears me up😭
Thanks man, and yes! Totally agree. Audio is very. VERY important! Cheers for participating!
The mistake they make is not doing their due diligence and underestimating the skill and knowledge needed to make good production sound, there's a lot of cowboy soundies out there ruining peoples films.
The most emotional quote for me, although not in a film, but in a series, is from Bojack Horseman. It's:
Bojack: "Didn't know I had it in me, did ya?"
Kelsey: "No. I knew."
Then Bojack goes outside, lights up a cigarette and starts crying.
It's so powerful because Bojack makes a self deprecating joke and then Kelsey hits him with the unexpected answer. She did believe in him all the time.
Thanks so much man!🙏🏼
Great tips both of you!
Emotional quote: ’So, Philippe. I’m not staying for lunch.’
’Why?’
’I’m not leaving you alone. You just happen to have a date.’
’A date? What do you mean?’
’Don’t freak out. It’ll be fine. Only this time you can’t flee.’ From The Intouchables
Thanks dude! And thanks for playing along!
Final Cut Pro X, select audio and video files on timeline, dropdown menu, select "sync clips," done. Sound and video sync'd up. No timecode needed. No hassle.
Wasn't as good when recorded this video. Audio syncing improved tremendously
it Was I love it. Now wanna know whats the best lights to use on Set.
Ill get into that soon!
@@SjoerdWess Thank You so Much for your reply and I can’t wait. I wanna start my Production and I have everything so far from lenses, red Komodo 6k, waiting for Monstro VV DSM2 camera, so far and thanks to you for the audio Tips. “…All I needed was to get away, just to realize that I was meant to stay…” and then she sings in Icelandic (in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga). I always cry at that part.

I'm working on a short film soon and this helps sooo so so much I'm still a little confused... Especially with time code I hate it but once I learn it I'll be happy. so thank you
Cheers mate. Sounds good!!
An Affair to Remember when Cary Grant says “there goes… he doesn’t like women”. Made me cry with laughter.
Beautiful indeed! Good one man!
It would've been great for her equipment gear to have been listed as well with links. Nice interview 👌🏼
Im working on it! :-). Its a lot, haha
Haha, this video came at the perfect moment. Just came back from a small shoot outside and as I was checking the audio I realized that one of our lavaliers stopped recording mid shoot without any of us realizing...
Oh shit mate, thats really bad news!! Hope you can fix it!
There's a chance as the lavalier that kept recording was the Zoom F2 so we do have 32 bit float. Keeping our fingers crossed and praising the audio gods.
Shiiiit mate! fingers crossed for you!🙏🏼
Great video. I'm a french new sound recordist, and my dream is to travel, to record on films set, and that's all I want. Wish me luck. Good luck and happy life tto everyone.

Hi Sjoerd, Bente, I was wondering, what wireless keyboard are you using at 2:02? Does it only work with the Nova, or also with for example the Nomad 12? Thanks for your reply, and great video! Kwinten
Hi Kwinten, I’m using the: Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard x1. It’s compatible with an usb, so it must work also with your Nomad!
@@bentevanderspek4380 Thanks for your reply! Do you often work on co-productions with Belgium?
@@kwintenvl No worries! Not that often, I was boom op last year on a Belgium feature but that's it. Are you based in Belgium?
"The horror! The horror!"
Yesss
Do you happen to have a video on audio gear for small and moderate budgets? I use a Rode Wireless Go II now, but I feel like it's not quality I'm looking for yet. I don't know if plugging in the DPA 6060 Bente mentioned will change this, or if I should be looking to upgrade. I initially liked the idea of wireless audio straight in camera because I wouldn't have to sync anything, but now that I know how simple it is to sync in Davinci I'm not so stuck on this idea anymore :p
Unfortunately not man. Not a great audio guy myself, haha. I let Bente do the heavy liftin these days
E.T. “I’ll be right here”
Thanks dude!
Nice. Im curious about the brace she used for hiding the receiver. Is it a special peace? Or just a soort van steunkous ;)
Its a special unit that has a pocket for the receiver! You can buy it at the sound winkel :-)
Very nice and informative video. But did you forget to grade the clip at 4:28 ?😄
Haha no not really! It was B cam!
What mic are you using here in this set up ?
Im not 100% sure im afraid
Is the indoor boom microphone mentioned in the video at any point? I can't seem to catch it and I've watched the whole video a few times now. I know the pattern type is mentioned near the end but if someone heard or knows which microphone is being or might be used in this video I'd appreciate knowing!
CMIT I think! Not sure tho
between the series sound devices mixpre and sounddevice 633 which has a very good preamp!? for a choice of professional sound engineer
I wouldnt know. Reach out to Bente on IG :-)
Great video! wow! How about the metadata?
Thats all done by Bente, using her keyboard. The clips are all named. Super easy for edit!
@@SjoerdWess ah okay :) I guess thats also possible on a sound devices recorder
I came for the nano locket device...the deal is over yet! whats the question agan?

Hello Mr. Wess. New Sound Mixer here. I have a Zoom F6 field recorder. I use a Sennheiser MKE-600 mic. I was told that recording in 32-bit is pointless because of the mic I have doesn’t even have the dynamic range for 32-bit recording. I was also told that no professional sound mixer records in 32-but. Can you clarify for me if I was told correctly or not? Thank you for your time.
Hey man, thanks for getting in touch, but this is also out of my reach, haha.
Dynamic range is not about frequency range. Recording in 32 bit means that it's basically impossible that the signal is going to clip if a source is too loud, because you have such a huge dynamic range. So it's a good idea to do that.
Thanks for adding this!
"That was my path... And I've come to discover that I dare not change one thing in the least." from Kyle McDougall's brilliantly crafted You Will Survive Doomsday - Short Film Documentary
Ill add this to the list to watch! And noted, glad youre playing along!🙏🏼
You can always end slate something if you can't front slate it?
Absolutely
Apologies if this emotional quote is too schmaltzy, sentimental and makes you cry.
“Love, it’s a motherf*cker…eh?” - Old School.
Hahaha. I love it. Thanks for sharing!
I’m here first
Haha congrats dude!
The one thing that is often not talked about, and in my experience invariably every maker I've worked with isnt aware but should be and that is radio licences! Once again, not been covered here.
Depending on your country you need licences for co-ordinated frequencies, otherwise you're committing radio piracy. In the UK you can get fined up to £5000 and even go to prison.
In the UK its a real pain in the ass. You have to book frequencies for each talent on set for the given location. I abandoned radio transmitters in favour of wired body pack recorders instead.
I have absolutely never heard of this lol. Thanks for bringing it up!
