- In this video I discuss the 3 pieces of equipment I have in my studio that help with workflow. All 3 massively help and save me a lot of time. From a business perspective time is money and if I can save time and work more efficiently, I can get more work completed throughout the day.

I was an early adopter of the Flock Audio Patch and in conjunction with two different summing mixers, it has allowed me to build an incredibly flexible hybrid rig - total game changer - use hardware like plugins - brilliant 😊
It's incredibly flexible. I can imagine mixing with it being incredible. I've always hated patching patchbays on consoles. Look nasty too all those bantam cables hanging around the side of the console.
Nice to hear a thumbs up for the flock. Got 4 of them and find them very handy.
Do you use yours with their DX app? I've found that to be a big timesaver for me. Just for the DX bridge and being able to save photos into the app.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio i do: it is a great app. Great to be able to consolidate all the data within the session.
A good controller is something that I could use but never found one that really satisfies me. I saw a startup from mpmidi which looks really promising. I’m mixing on an analog desk so can do without it but maybe I will try it out one day. A streamdesk is something I looked into too and can be a nice addition to my setup 😊
Love your videos ❤
Great vid Paul. The flock stuff is awesome and the dx app is worth the upgrade for all the extras.
As soon as I saw I could load images into the app I was sold on that upgrade
I had a streamdeck and I sold it. I understand its advantages but it wasn't for me. Never get used to it. However, i've got a flock audio patch and it is really a game changer for me. I hated so much patch cable. In that case i don't use the dx app but the free one. Don't like to take pics and prefer using session recall app to have all my recalls.
Great video!
Thanks Paul.
Paul i loved the master that you did on my next release! Cheers.
My pleasure. Thank you for letting me know.
So rather than having a fixed mastering chain you now have everything connected to the Flock and you can customize the chain and the order of devices (or whether to include/remove devices) as you see fit?
Yes, exactly that.
Any compromises on sound with patchbay? Pardon the slightly frivolous question I know that you wouldnt use it if there was degradation
None at all. I tested this before committing to it. Which is one reason I've always hated patchbays in mastering. You'd always have the odd crackle on a patch cable even with a nice expensive patchbay. To test this is loaded up 5 different songs using the exact same signal chain and the difference was none. This was a major factor when purchasing.
but you forgot to mention flock it is adding coloration to the sound :) I was testing one more than one year ago - I was not happy with this
You either had a bad experience or something incorrect with your setup, because I own 3 of them and there is no color or changes added to the signal path. you think all of us would be using them if they added color?
Not my one. Think you might be alone on that one. I had one in prior to buying it and did every test I could to check all this. Didn't colour the sound in any way. Could be that the newer ones are different to the one you tested over a year ago. I didn't mention it simply because it's not true.
@@bennettadriano2954maybe your speakers and room doesn't allow you to hear this. Please listen carefully - make a/b test or records signals you will see - this is only my opinion - this is not passive piece of gear it has operational amplifiers so it's logical that coloration exist - I prefer good interface with many inputs outputs than another layer of conversion. take care
@@imikeimike9523 - Not sure you understand what you are stating. An interface is conversion with ad/da. the flocks are no ad/da conversion so your comment about 'than another layer of conversion' doesn't make any sense. anyways I can confirm they add no color or noise to any signal path.
@@AudioAnimalsStudioPaul maybe new ones are different but you are adding another layer of conversion with different than your audio interface operatinal amplifiers - I don't think they improved to fully transparent in one year - I have tested also CB electronics xpatch and have the same opinion :) take care and thanks for your videos - good to see what pros are using :)
Here's a question for maybe a future video. If you could only have one piece of gear for mastering, what would be your choice ? Okay, let's give you two pieces of gear you couldn't live without. ;)🙏
Good question. I would pick only tools that achieve the biggest amount of difference when compared to plugins in the box. EQ can achieve 95% in the box where as compression, limiting and saturation is a far bigger difference. For that reason, I would choose the SPL iron and Hum Audio LAAL.
@@AudioAnimalsStudiothanks! Yah I would definitely agree with you about compression and saturation not being good enough ITB. Can the SPL iron impart lots of colour if required? I was looking at the phoenix compressor for that kind of gloss/shine and control. But the SPL seems to have more colour options.
@SkynetRecordings if required, yes. The compressor has a lot of scope of what you can do with it.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Nice! I appreciate you sharing your opinion/experience. Is it something you feel could also work well on a drum buss for mixing by adding a nice touch of saturation/limiting? I’m guessing it’s smooth and doesn’t get too edgy?
@SkynetRecordings yes it is a very smooth compressor. It can be used on anything. I wouldn't say it is like a g bus compressor but more like a fairchild.
Flock audio adds noise to the signal right? Wolff audio is coming out with a fully passive version
Another thing I tested before purchases. And no additional noise added that was above the surface noise already there. If anything for me I was removing noise as I was able to remove units that were not active in the signal path.
Flock is working with relays so it’s passive, same as Wolf 😊
@@Studio22mix It is not passive as there is cheap IC’s being used throughout the unit
@@dougleydorite The ic’s are for controlling the relais and are not part of the signal paths.
I own 3 flocks, my first one since 2019 and there is zero noise added. I saw Wolffs at namm and I would bet my studio that thing is going to be noisy and channels will bleed together with all those relays packed next to each other in such close proximity and constant clicking.
