      Actually what I would like is a battle of the Tun’s, 1509 specifically. I have the 2 & 5, I am interested in which is the peatiest & most sherried one still available. Mike your channel Rocks. Very informative, all the information I am looking for when considering a purchase. Also it is appropriately named because you guys have the premium whisk(e)ys. In fact that may be the only thing missing from your channel is the (e) in whisk(e)y on your channel name. Alas I agree the superior whisk(e)y has no e…

    Great video! Funny that Dustin mentioned glue. When I visited Balvenie and got to smell some of their really old stuff from the 1960’s they had that glue note I. The background. We also drank a ~40YO dram that also had that note. I found it to be awesome, hahah. This review got me interested in picking up a 25 just for the glue!!! Even though you had it last. 😉

    Never had the bourbon barrel. Great price you paid for the 15 yr, sounds like a steal. Great review.

      The 15's were great whiskies and always available until five or so years ago.

    I bought a bottle of the 15 Year Old single barrel several years ago. What I got mostly from it was a fantastic rich crème brûlée. I went back to that shop and asked them how much more they had. I bought the first bottle out of a case they had, I was told, so I bought the remaining 11 bottles. I gave two bottles away as gifts. I have 4 bottles left. There was considerable batch variation with these releases and I decided to stock up because a later batch probably wouldn't be the same. I'm trying to recall the price I paid per bottle...I think it was something like $90. It was a sad day when the distillery discontinued the 15. Since I stocked up there was no reason for me to try the 12 that replaced it and so I have no idea what that one is like. BTW, I did not like the sherry cask single barrel. The bottle I had was over-oaked and bitter.

      The SB15 bourbon is a special whisky for how available it was. I get all types of tropical fruits, I did an individual review of it and my thoughts haven't changed.

    Very interesting review guys! I wonder how much “barrel to barrel “ variation exists with these ex-bourbon casks. I find quite a bit with their 15 sherry casks.

    my 15 SB (1989/2004) is much more paler... I'm pretty sure it's not artificially coloured. Great dram, by the way.

    Hate that you got a 25 that was disappointing. I've had one of the 25s that was great and found a couple of the same barrel. The barrel I have is 7000 and bottled in 2015. Don't have any opened at the time but definitely up to trade when I crack it open later this year.

      I have bottle 6006 which was bottled in 2018 and a week shy of 29 years old. Bottle pop was solid but more time with air did nothing for it.

    Would really like to find one of those 15 bourbon cask bottles forgotten on a shelf. Had a 15 sherry cask that was good but want to get the opportunity to taste more of the spirit character. The 12 1st fill bourbon barrel is $82 near me. What do you guy's think of those compared to the old 15's ? Cheers

      Sour and bitter vs sweet and fruity. The 12 is one ralfy loved however for that earth old old flavor.

    I only had 21 and 25 and really enjoyed them but think 25 is super overpriced for what it offers over 21. Never seen the 15, but 12 are available everywhere and not many people grab them. Had one question about your glasses, when do you use copita and when regular glencairn? Just bought few glencairn copita and I think nosing is in another level, was wondering if it’s just me or they are actually better?

    • @topshelfwhisky
      @topshelfwhisky  2 роки тому +1

      The cost of the 25 is about right for that age of whisky but I agree it’s underwhelming.
      Normally we use copita’s when the abv is lower then 50% which these whiskies are but sadly I only have 4 and for this review I would have needed more.

    • @topshelfdustin3060
      @topshelfdustin3060 2 роки тому +2

      With what Mike said I find some higher abv whiskies can get a bit too sharp out of the copita which is why around that 50% abv is about right. And disagree with mike, 600+ is out of line with the market on 25 year old whiskies...but it's Balvenie...they get away with premium pricing.
