  • The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak, was introduced to the Balvenie single malt Scotch whisky range in 2014. Released in batches, each bottle is one of no more than 300, drawn from a single cask, all of which are refill American oak casks. There will be slight variations between batches, but the casks selected by Malt Master David Stewart for this release are chosen for having the richly spiced, sweetly honeyed character you'd expect from 25 year old Balvenie single malt aged in American oak. This means there is an overarching consistency between batches.

    Right on Michael! Your voice belies your stature, I was picturing a dude about the size of NFL's Lyle Alzado!

    Great entry Mike! Balvenie 25 is a wonderfully indulgent special occasion dram. I’m visiting and taking the expanded distillery tour in May. I can’t wait!!

    I bought one bottle of this back when it was less than $250, still a splurge for me and sad that the elegance of it is reserved for those that can drop $600 for it now. Nice review Mike and true to my notes on it. Mine was 25 years and 4 months('78-'03) and bottled at 46.9%

      Jimidrammer The prohibitive cost of well aged single malts is sad and disappointing. I remember the days when Glenfarclas 40 was $299 and the most expensive whisky at the stores was Macallan 25 for around $500... those were the days.

      Also there is a 25yo Double Wood out now that may explain this Single Barrel being discontinued. @@topshelfwhisky

      Jimidrammer I’ve also seen a triple wood 25... some tasty options.

      @@topshelfwhisky I think that Triple Cask is Duty Free exclusive and I don't travel internationally so... really just stick to the 21yo Port Wood for $199, that's about my limit with Balvenie. Later this year we should see a new Balvenie 26yo Dark Barley that should resemble what Glenmorangie did with Signet.

    I tried one at a tasting. Picked up this gun power smoke to it. Wassn't really feeling that particular note. Threw the rest off. But the honey/vanilla/oak you get is unreal!

      Sippers Social Club thanks! Just watched a few of your videos, love that Mac 18 review... this is a good one but benefits from a controlled environment greatly. Thanks for stopping by.

    As always your honesty and genuine candor is very becoming and appreciated! I'm at a point in my journey where I need substantially more than most Balvenie's provide. That said I thoroughly enjoyed the Peat Week 14 2003 very much! In contrast I opened a Portwood 21 at Christmas and was left wanting. Although the nose was amazing the palate fell well short of expectations. Great review Mike and thank you!

      Chad Adams yes, as my whisky journey continues I find it harder to be impressed. The 21 port wood was always one of my favorites but I have opened one I’m quit some time. I first experience with it was the 47.8% version, the 43% is definitely noticeable decrease in flavor, I’ve also seen 40% bottling’s for the UK market... which one do you have?

    • @chadadams1127
      @chadadams1127 5 років тому +1

      Mike and Billy's Whiskey Review , I have the 43% avb version, again the nose was great! Ripe cantaloupe and honeydew with port and mildly sweet cake icing and a tiny bit of sulfur like a burnt match. The palate was well, flat totally meh imho. Maybe I've been drinking too much cask strength whisky?...Thanks for the response Mike!

      Chad Adams it’s probably the ABV, ever try the TUN 1509? Probably double the price of the 21 PW but in my opinion, worth it. I love that whisky. Normally around $400.

      Mike, no but I have had the 1400? Tun awhile back (few years ago) and it was very good. I just couldn't pull the trigger at the time @$300 now it's over$400 lol...

    My most recent purchase was Old Pulteney 21... It broke me. Balvenie 25 would only shatter the little pieces that are left.

    I'm a huge fan of The Balvenie and I know where to get my paws on one, maybe two, bottles of the
    15 year old. So I should probably grab those last, huh? Anyway great review!

    I'm in mitten land! Michigan liquor list has the 15 year old at 119$ as of 2019. I wouldn't exactly call that a value single malt, but most 15 year olds are in the 75 to 100$ range. With an awful lot of NAS's at that 100$ range now a day's. What cha think Mike, pull the trigger?

    • @topshelfwhisky
      @topshelfwhisky  5 років тому

      J B wallace I’m guessing that is the sherry cask for $119 not the bourbon barrel, am I correct? The sherry cask is a really good whisky if you get the first fill bottling, you can tell by the color, it should be DARK.

    Awesome review Mike. I imagine this whisky is also awesome but unfortunately it's beyond my pocket. I'm a big fan of Balvenie when they have a serious alcohol level. I still have a couple of bottles of the 15 Single Barrel but I keep them in my little pad in the south of Spain so I can only retrieve them one at a time when I visit. I found a little booze shop in Torre Del Mar that still had 5 bottles for the original price long after it was discontinued. I bought the lot. (The Sherry 15 is excellent too, when you get the first fill.) I got a Hakushu 18 from the same place for £75. The lady that runs the place is highly suspicious of me now. Back to the Balvenie 25 - it's expensive, too much so. It's over £400 in the U.K which is crazy. I'm currently contemplating buying a rare and legendary sherry, average age is 100 years old, for £200. Cheers my good mate. WT

    Man oh man. I have to head back to the small liquor shop I passed by for lunch. They have 2 Balvenie 15 Single Barrel that isn't the new Sherry version. Both were bottled in 2007. The only issue is the labels and tins got water logged at the warehouse years ago. The bottles are still sealed tight just the labels are bad.

    • @topshelfwhisky
      @topshelfwhisky  5 років тому

      Get those bottles! The 15 year is one of my favorites, so many tropical fruits if you give it some time in the glass. kiwi, mango, passion fruit... not sure where your location is but in Columbus they were around $100... when you say 2007, I'm assuming thats the bottling date? also look at both dates as sometimes you get older whisky. maybe 16 or 17 years old.
      Please give me details if you end up purchasing!!!

    Nice review Mike. I curious why Balvenie didn't put 28 years old on the bottle? Surely this would be better marketing wise?

    • @topshelfwhisky
      @topshelfwhisky  5 років тому +1

      ThatsKrazee my guess would be the cost of using multiple labels... I noticed these on the market around 2014 and at that point the whisky was 25 years old. But ever year after (15,16, 17) the age went up. All these seem to be from casks dating 1988 or 1989 regardless of the bottling date, as such, each years release gets older.

    • @thatskrazee
      @thatskrazee 5 років тому

      Well as long as the price reflects a 25 year old I'm all for it! Cheers Mike!
